We have measured the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the Cu L3 edge in a variety of cuprates. Exploiting a considerably improved energy resolution (0.8 eV) we recorded significant dependencies on the sample composition and orientation, on the scattering geometry, and on the incident photon polarization. The RIXS final states correspond to two families of electronic excitations, having local (dd excitations) and nonlocal (charge-transfer) character. The dd energy splitting can be estimated with a simple crystal field model. The RIXS at the L3 edge demonstrates here a great potential, thanks to the resonance strength and to the large 2p spin-orbit splitting.  相似文献

We report high-resolution polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the O K resonance of NiO showing a rich excitation spectrum. We perform multisite Ni6O19 cluster model calculations, revealing that solid state effects are substantial. We identify a nonlocal charge transfer excitation at 4-5 eV and double-singlet creation at 1.75 eV, both exhibiting significant scattering geometry dependence. Apart from an intense band of local charge transfer excitations (above 5 eV) also dd excitations at 1 eV are observed. Finally, we point out that O K RIXS of correlated metal oxides allows a quantitative and consistent determination of the charge transfer energy delta and the Hund coupling energy J(H).  相似文献

We report a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the two-leg ladder Sr14Cu24O41. RIXS spectra at 1–5 eV are found to be dependent on temperature. An intraband excitation of the ladder, which appears as a continuum intensity below the Mott gap, decreases in intensity with temperature. Because the intraband excitation is related to the dynamics of doped holes in the ladder, its decrease of the intraband excitation is attributed to the reduction of the mobile holes in the ladder at low temperature.  相似文献

We perform the numerically exact diagonalization calculation for small Cu-O clusters with a Ni impurity site, representing the Ni-substituted cuprate, to examine the single-particle excitation spectra as well as the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra. We clarify relations between low-energy electronic structures near the Ni site and excitations seen in the RIXS spectra.  相似文献

Using the bosonization technique, a theory for the collective excitations of the interacting electrons in quantum wires with two subbands occupied is developed. The dispersion relations for the inter-subband charge and spin density excitations are determined. The results are used to interpret the features observed in recent measurements of the Raman spectra of AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wires, particularly for photon energies near band gap resonance. It is shown that peaks previously identified as “single particle excitations” are signatures of higher order collective spin density excitations. Predictions about the observability of the interband modes are made. Received 8 February 1999  相似文献

The performance of the LSDA+U functional—in particular, the quality of the ground-state—is tested via calculations of the electron-hole excitations of NiO, which are compared with (non-resonant) inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) and ellipsometry measurements. The dynamical density-response calculations are performed within the random-phase approximation (RPA), defining an LSDA+U/RPA density-response method. A significant success of this method is the insight it provides into the main loss present in the IXS data above the NiO optical gap, namely, a peak lying at ∼7.5 eV. This excitation, which is shown to be collective in nature, and to be induced by eg-eg transitions, provides a direct link between the correlated eg-states and the IXS data. This finding illustrates the power of IXS, combined with correlated-band-structure theory (here, LSDA+U theory), for the investigation of the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials. At the same time, our results indicate that the LSDA+U/RPA response method does not represent a complete theory.  相似文献

Nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements on NiO and CoO show that strong dipole-forbidden d-d excitations appear within the Mott gap at large wave vectors. These dominant excitations are highly anisotropic, and have [001] nodal directions for NiO. Theoretical analyses based on a novel, energy-resolved Wannier function (within the local density approximation+Hubbard U) show that the anisotropy reflects the local exciton wave functions and local point-group symmetry. The sensitivity to weak symmetry breaking in particle-hole wave functions suggests a wide application to strongly correlated systems.  相似文献

Mott gap excitations in the optimally doped high-T(c) superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) (T(c)=93 K) have been studied by the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering method. Anisotropic spectra in the ab plane are observed in a twin-free crystal. The excitation from the one-dimensional CuO chain is enhanced at 2 eV near the zone boundary of the b* direction, while the excitation from the CuO2 plane is broad at 1.5-4 eV and almost independent of the momentum transfer. Theoretical calculations based on the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard model reproduces the observed spectra when different values of the on-site Coulomb energy are assumed. The Mott gap of the CuO chain site is found to be much smaller than that of the CuO2 plane site.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of the tunneling spectrum of methyl groups in lithium acetate dihydrate has been studied in the temperature range between 1.2 and 8.0 K by inelastic neutron scattering. The results unambiguously prove that it is to a first order approximation correct to describe the tunneling motions by a model of coupled CH3 pairs which are isolated from each other. However, from the fact that the tunneling frequencies shift to higher values with decreasing spin temperature, we conclude that coupling effects are important not only between nearest neighbour CH3 groups. Quantitatively we can describe the observations by a model of coupled pairs with a fixed value for the interaction potentialW 3 and a variable single particle potentialV 3 which depends linearly on the concentration of the spin symmetry species.  相似文献

Utilizing an analogy between the spin-orbit field and a magnetic field, it is shown that a plane-wave Born-approximation calculation in two dimensions gives a good qualitative account of the observed features of the probability of spin flip in inelastic scattering. Comparisons of the two-dimensional model and the collective model DWBA are given for the reaction 58Ni(p, p′)58Ni(2+) at 20 MeV and 100 MeV.  相似文献

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-T(c) superconductor Nd1.85 Ce0.15 CuO4. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with q-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.  相似文献

Momentum dependence of charge excitations across the effective Mott gap in several quasi-low-dimensional model cuprates with different effective dimensionalities is studied using high resolution inelastic X-ray scattering by working near Copper k-edge resonance which allows us to extract the dispersion relations of the particle-hole pair excitations at the gap edge. Besides electron-electron correlation, momentum dependence of the gap-excitations is found to be strongly dependent on the effective dimensionality (or topology) of the 3dx2y2 network.  相似文献

We report the results of Oxygen K-edge soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy that was performed on an infinite-layer insulating cuprate thin film CaCuO2. Experimentally obtained spectra are consistent with local density approximation calculations. X-ray absorption spectra show a close resemblance to spectra obtained from homologous single crystal cuprates. In addition to d–d excitations, X-ray emission spectra reveal the presence of Zhang-Rice singlet states in the infinite-layer CuO2 planes. The question of whether the Zhang-Rice singlet features are masked by the O 2p main-band is addressed: it is possible to quantify the position of the Zhang-Rice singlet using emission intensity profiles. X-ray emission is demonstrated as a tool for understanding CuO2 planar electronic correlation in the prototypical infinite-layer. The energy difference, 2.0 eV, between the oxygen main-band and the Zhang-Rice singlet band is found to match values obtained theoretically using established planar electronic correlation parameters.  相似文献

We report a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study on perovskite manganese oxides La1−xSrxMnO3 (x=0, 0.2, and 0.4) at Mn K-absorption edge. Hole-doping effect on the electronic excitations in the strongly correlated electron systems is elucidated by comparing with undoped LaMnO3. The scattering spectra of metallic La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 show that a salient peak appears in low energies indicating the persistence of the Mott gap. At the same time, the energy gap is partly filled by doping holes and the spectral weight shifts toward lower energies. Though the peak position of the excitations shows weak dispersion in momentum dependence, RIXS intensity changes as a function of the scattering angle (2θ), which is related to the anisotropy. Furthermore, anisotropic temperature dependence is observed in La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 which shows a metal-insulator transition associated with a ferromagnetic transition. We consider that the anisotropy in the RIXS spectra is possibly attributed to the correlation of the orbital degrees of freedom. The anisotropy is large in LaMnO3 with long-range orbital order, while it is small but finite in hole-doped La1−xSrxMnO3 which indicates persistence of short-range orbital correlation.  相似文献
