We study theoretically nonequilibrium noise in the fractional quantum Hall regime for an Aharonov-Bohm ring with a third contact in the middle of the ring. Because of their fractional statistics the tunneling of Laughlin quasiparticles between the inner and outer edges of the ring changes the effective Aharonov-Bohm flux experienced by quasiparticles going around the ring, leading to a change in the conductance across the ring. A small current in the middle contact, therefore, gives rise to fluctuations in the current flowing across the ring which resemble random telegraph noise. We analyze this noise using the chiral Luttinger liquid model. At low frequencies the telegraph noise varies inversely with the tunneling current and can be much larger than the shot noise. We propose that combining the Aharonov-Bohm effect with a noise measurement provides a direct method for observing fractional statistics.  相似文献

We propose an experiment to probe the unconventional quantum statistics of quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall states by measurement of current noise. The geometry we consider is that of a Hall bar where two quantum point contacts introduce two interfering amplitudes for backscattering. Thermal fluctuations of the number of quasiparticles enclosed between the two point contacts introduce current noise, which reflects the statistics of the quasiparticles. We analyze Abelian nu=1/q states and the non-Abelian nu=5/2 state.  相似文献

A microscopic confirmation of the fractional statistics of the quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect has so far been lacking. We calculate the statistics of the composite-fermion quasiparticles at nu=1/3 and nu=2/5 by evaluating the Berry phase for a closed loop encircling another composite-fermion quasiparticle. A careful consideration of subtle perturbations in the trajectory due to the presence of an additional quasiparticle is crucial for obtaining the correct value of the statistics. The conditions for the applicability of the fractional statistics concept are discussed.  相似文献

We derive one-particle and two-particle correlators of anyons in the lowest Landau level. We show that the two-particle correlator exhibits signatures of fractional statistics which can distinguish anyons from their fermionic and bosonic counterparts. These signatures include the zeros of the two-particle correlator and its exclusion behavior. We find that the one-particle correlator in finite geometries carries valuable information relevant to experiments in which quasiparticles on the edge of a quantum Hall system tunnel through its bulk.  相似文献

We compute the temperature, voltage, and magnetic field dependences of the conductance oscillations of a model interferometer designed to measure the fractional statistics of the quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The geometry is the same as that used in recent experiments. With appropriate assumptions concerning the relative areas of the inner and outer rings of the interferometer, we find the theoretical results, including the existence of super periodic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, to be in remarkably good agreement with experiment. We then make additional experimental predictions with no adjustable parameters which, if verified, would confirm the proposed interpretation of the experiment as a measurement of fractional statistics.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider there exist two types of fundamental quasihole excitation in the fractional quantum spin Hall state and investigate their topological properties by both Chern-Simons field theory and the Berry phase technique. By the two different techniques, we obtain the identical charge and statistical angle for each type of quasihole, as well as the identical mutual statistics between two different types of quasihole excitation.  相似文献

A microscopic theory of current partition in fractional quantum Hall liquids, described by chiral Luttinger liquids, is developed to compute the noise correlations, using the Keldysh technique. In this Hanbury-Brown and Twiss geometry, at Laughlin filling factors nu = 1/3, the real time noise correlator exhibits oscillations which persist over larger time scales than that of an uncorrelated Hall fluid. The zero frequency noise correlations are negative at filling factor 1/3 as for bare electrons (antibunching), but are strongly reduced in amplitude. These correlations become positive (bunching) for nu < or = 1/5, suggesting a tendency towards bosonic behavior.  相似文献

We study theoretically resonant tunneling of composite fermions through their quasibound states around a fractional quantum Hall island, and find a rich set of possible transitions of the island state as a function of the magnetic field or the backgate voltage. These have possible relevance to a recent experimental study, and reveal many subtleties involved in deducing fractional braiding statistics.  相似文献

We study the interplay of electron-electron interaction, confining potential and effects of finite temperature at the edge of a quantum Hall liquid. Our exact diagonalization calculation indicates that edge reconstruction occurs in the fractional quantum Hall regime for a variety of confining potential, including ones that correspond to a "sharp" edge. Our finite temperature Hartree-Fock calculation for integer quantum Hall edges indicates that reconstruction is suppressed above a certain temperature. We discuss the implication of our results on recent edge tunneling and microwave absorption experiments.  相似文献

In this paper, the key ideas of characterizing universality classes of dissipationfree (incompressible) quantum Hall fluids by mathematical objects called quantum Hall lattices are reviewed. Many general theorems about the classification of quantum Hall lattices are stated and their physical implications are discussed. Physically relevant subclasses of quantum Hall lattices are defined and completely classified. The results are carefully compared with experimental data and also with other theoretical schemes (the hierarchy schemes). Several proposals for new experiments are made which could help to settle interesting issues in the theory of the (fractional) quantum Hall effect and thus would lead to a deeper understanding of this remarkable effect.  相似文献

Effects of backward scattering between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) edge modes are studied. Based on the edge-state picture for hierarchical FQH liquids, we discuss the possibility of the transitions between different plateaux of the tunneling conductance G. We find a selection rule for the sequence which begins with a conductance (m: integer, p: even integer) in units of e 2/h. The shot-noise spectrum as well as the scaling behavior of the tunneling current is calculated explicitly. Received 5 October 1999 and Received in final form 19 November 1999  相似文献
