Annealing of maleated polypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites is studied at a range of temperatures from 180 °C to 300 °C under a stream of nitrogen and nitrogen/air mixtures. The study comprises determinations of the migration of clay to the surface by the use of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infra red (ATR-FTIR) spectra. The extent of migration is shown to increase with the increase in the percent of maleic anhydride (MA) grafted onto the PP and with the percentage of air added to the nitrogen gas used for purging of the samples during annealing. The extent of migration increases with temperature up to 225 °C. At temperatures of 250-300 °C, the extent of migration decreases. Simultaneously, a change in the structure of the nanocomposites is observed by small-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), showing a conversion of the nanostructure to the non-colloidal microcomposite. The study conforms to previous findings and indicates that the migrating moiety is composed of exfoliated clay particles. The effect of the decomposition of the grafted MA groups and the evolution of CO2 on the rate of oxidation and migration are observed and discussed. The effect of the evolved CO2 on the stability of the clay particles is pointed out. The role of migration in the elucidation of the structure of nanocomposites is discussed along with other mechanistic considerations.  相似文献

Nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP) were prepared by melt mixing using maleic anhydride modified polypropylene (PPg) and different organophilic montmorillonites (OMMT). The selected organo-modified clays differ in their initial particle size, amount and type of surfactant and/or their cation-exchange capacity. All composites have 80, 15 and 5 wt% of PP, PPg and OMMT, respectively. The materials were characterized using TGA, XRD, SEM and rotational rheometry. Cloisite 15A, Cloisite 93A, Nanomer I44 and a bentonite modified with octadecylammonium (B18) display intercalation and exfoliation after mixing and annealing and produce nanocomposites with different degrees of ‘solid-like’ rheological behavior. The composites based in Cloisite 15A and Nanomer I44, which use the same intercalant, show very similar phase structure and rheological response, regardless of the origin and initial characteristics of the clays. These nanocomposites are the most affected by the thermal history during rheological characterization in the molten state. On the other hand, Cloisite 10A and Cloisite 30B display collapse of the silicate layers after compounding with no evidence of exfoliation.  相似文献

Polypropylene/surface modified clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation in twin-screw extruder followed by blown film extrusion. The effects of organically modified clay on the physical, mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of the prepared nanocomposites were studied. The results showed that 95% enhancement in tensile strength and 152% increase in tensile modulus was observed. TGA analysis in inert atmosphere showed an 87 °C marked increase in the thermal degradation temperature. The DSC curve showed the melting point was increased 4 °C in presence of clay in the matrix owing to the fact that the filler acts as reinforcing effect. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results showed improvement in storage modulus from 9.76 × 103 to 1.12 × 104 MPa with the incorporation of organically modified clay and thus enhanced its stiffness. The morphology of the nanocomposites was further studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) which confirmed the exfoliation structure of the nanocomposites.  相似文献

In current study, a real‐time rheological method was used to investigate the intercalation and exfoliation process of clay in high‐density polyethylene/organoclay (HDPE/OMMT) nanocomposites using maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) as compatibilizer. To do this, a steady shear was applied to the original nonintercalated or slightly intercalated composites prepared via simple mixing. The moduli of the composites were recorded as a function of time. The effect of matrix molecular weight and the content of compatibilizer on the modulus were studied. The role of the compatibilizer is to enhance the interaction between OMMT and polymer matrix, which facilitates the dispersion, intercalation, and exfoliation of OMMT. The matrix molecular weight determines the melt viscosity and affects the shear stress applied to OMMT platelets. Based on the experimental results, different exfoliation processes of OMMT in composites with different matrix molecular weight were demonstrated. The slippage of OMMT layers is suggested in low‐molecular weight matrix, whereas a gradual intercalation process under shear is suggested in high‐molecular weight matrix. Current study demonstrates that real‐time rheological measurement is an effective way to investigate the dispersion, intercalation, and exfoliation of OMMT as well as the structural change of the matrix. Moreover, it also provides a deep understanding for the role of polymer matrix and compatibilizer in the clay intercalation process. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to achieve acceptable levels of flame retardancy of polymers, phosphorus-based flame retardant (FR) additives at about 20-30% w/w are required which is too high for conventional synthetic fibres. To know whether more finely sized particles of conventional FRs with or without nanoclay are more effective at the same concentration, composites of PA6 with bentonite and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) have been prepared by melt processing in a twin-screw extruder. XRD peaks and TEM images of PA6/Org-bentonite composite show partially ordered intercalation and ordered exfoliation. Thermal analysis in He shows that thermal stability of PA6 nanocomposite has increased by 18 °C compared with pure PA6 during degradation after 425 °C but it has decreased by 100 °C on inclusion of APP in PA6/nanoclay composites. The char yield is increased by 20% in PA6/bentonite/APP composites. No effect on thermal stability or char yield is observed by reducing the particle size of APP.  相似文献

PA6 composites with Cloisite® 30B (30B), prepared by different procedures, i.e., melt compounding, static annealing and solution blending, have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and microscopic analyses (TEM, SEM, POM) in order to shed more light on the mechanism of nanostructure development. It has been demonstrated that intercalation of the PA6 chains within the 30B galleries takes place very rapidly, in the absence of applied stresses, even when the size of the clay particles is relatively large (tens of microns) and the clay loading is very high (even 50 wt.%). It has also been shown that, if, conversely, the filler content is low (∼10 wt.% or less) and the particles are tiny (e.g., as for polymer/clay mixtures prepared by precipitation from a common solution), intercalation continues, under quiescent conditions, and leads in reasonable times to complete destruction of the silicate platelets stacking order. The composites with higher filler contents display a mixed exfoliated/intercalated morphology, with the intercalated silicate stacks characterized by an interlayer distance of about 3.7 nm. Contrary to statically annealed composites, the melt kneaded ones are characterized by a homogeneous dispersion of the filler particles and a local parallel orientation of the silicate platelets that induces, during polymer crystallization, an orientation of the polymer crystallites parallel to the faces of the compression molded specimens. Experiments carried out using 30B samples previously treated at 250 °C for 4 h under vacuum (30Bdegr) indicate that this treatment, probably due to the collapsed interlayer spaces, lowers the extent of PA6 chains intercalation. Thus, the relevant PA6/30Bdegr composites are characterized by the coexistence of unintercalated clay tactoids/agglomerates and individual silicate layers formed as result of intercalation on the edges of the filler particles.  相似文献

A two-step approach with a combination of emulsion polymerization and melt intercalation with higher clay loading of 33 wt.% is disclosed to highly confine the polystyrene (PS) chains by montmorillonite. The product of the emulsion polymerization is an easily crushable fine powder. And the powder is readily processible by open mill to form a transparent sheet. In the melt intercalation process, further intercalation of polystyrene narrows the space among the tactoids and results a highly confined intercalated nanocomposite. The results of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the cooperative motions of PS segments were substantially depressed, indicative of the highly intercalated structure formed in the nanocomposites. A structural model is proposed to explain the highly confined mesostruture of the PS/MMT nanocomposite.  相似文献

The melt-direct intercalation method was employed to prepare polypropylene (PP)/maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH)/organic-montmorillonite (Org-MMT), X-ray diffractometer was used to investigate the intercalation effect and crystallite size in composites and TEM micrograph to observe the dispersion of Org-MMT interlayers in polypropylene. The results showed that by introducing maleated polypropylene in PP/Org-MMT composite, macromolecule segments had intercalated into interlayer space of Org-MMT. As a result, Org-MMT interlayers were dispersed evenly in polypropylene and PP/PP-g-MAH/Org-MMT nanocomposite was synthesized. The crystallite size of nanocomposite perpendicular to the crystalline plane such as (0 4 0), (1 3 0), (1 1 1), (0 4 1) is smaller than that of pristine PP, which indicated that the crystallite size of PP in nanocomposite can be diminished by adding PP-g-MAH and Org-MMT in PP. Moreover, the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PP and PP/PP-g-MAH/Org-MMT nanocomposite was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with various cooling rates. The Avrami analysis modified by Jeziorny, Ozawa method and a method developed by Liu were employed to describe the nonisothermal crystallization process of these samples. The difference in the exponent n between PP and nanocomposite, indicated that nonisothermal kinetic crystallization corresponded to tridimensional growth with heterogeneous nucleation. The values of half-time, Zc, F(T) and K(T) showed that the crystallization rate of composites was faster than that of PP at a given cooling rate.  相似文献

The thermal properties and fire behaviour of polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic-mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and glow wire test. In order to study the morphological structure of the materials obtained, TEM and XRD analyses were also carried out. The nanocomposites were prepared using the melt intercalation technique in a co-rotating intermeshing twin screw extruder. Particular attention was given to studying the influence of different processing conditions (barrel temperature profile and screw rate) and compositions of PP-nanoclay blends (clay content, use of compatibiliser) on the thermal properties of the nanocomposites. The results show that all the properties analysed were strongly influenced by the nanocomposite composition; instead, the processing conditions greatly affect only the dynamic-mechanical properties. DSC curves show that the crystallinity is deeply influenced by the presence of the clay in the matrix, owing to the fact that the filler acts as nucleating agent. DMA curves show that materials processed at low temperature profile and high shear stress, i.e. when a good clay dispersion is achieved, are characterised by an enhanced modulus, thus indicating that the incorporation of clay into the PP matrix remarkably enhances its stiffness and has good reinforcing effects. TGA traces in oxidizing atmosphere show a drastic shift of the weight loss curve towards higher temperature and no variation of the onset temperature (i.e. the temperature at which degradation begins). The TGA analyses in inert atmosphere show instead marked increase of this parameter (about 200 °C) and no shift of weight loss curves. Glow wire results highlight that polymer nanocomposites are characterised by enhanced fire behaviour.  相似文献

Nanocomposites containing hydrotalcite and prepared by melt compounding with polypropylene were UV-light irradiated in artificial accelerated conditions representative of solar irradiation (λ > 300 nm) at 60 °C in air. The chemical modifications resulting from photooxidation were followed by IR and UV-visible spectroscopies. The presence of hydrotalcite was shown to change the global rate of photooxidation of polypropylene by reducing the oxidation induction time and increasing the oxidation rate. The differences of the oxidation induction time disappeared after solvent extraction of the antioxidant. They were attributed to a quenching of the antioxidant activity resulting from a migration onto the filler surface induced by the preferential interaction with the polar hydrotalcite. Extracting the antioxidant did not change the oxidation rate at the permanent regime. The increase of the oxidation rate was attributed to transition metal ions, present as impurities in hydrotalcite, which can accelerate the oxidation of the polymer by various mechanisms including a catalysed decomposition of hydroperoxides.  相似文献

In this paper, cetyl pyridium chloride (CPC) was employed to modify the montmorillonite. TGA analysis shows that the organic modified clay has higher thermal stability than hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride modified montmorillonite and is suitable to be used for preparing poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/clay nanocomposites at the high temperature. And then PBT/clay nanocomposites were prepared by direct melt intercalation. The results of XRD, TEM and HREM experiments show the formation of exfoliated-intercalated structure. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites does not evidently decrease, but the char residue at 600 °C remarkably increase compared with pure PBT. DSC results indicate that clay improves the melting temperature, the crystallization rate and crystallinity of the PBT molecules in the nanocomposites.  相似文献

Dialkyl imidazolium salt with better thermal stability than the commonly used dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium salt was synthesized and ion exchanged on the montmorillonite surface. Polypropylene nanocomposites with different volume fractions of the obtained organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) were prepared and the effect of the modified clay on the gas barrier and mechanical properties was studied. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the microstructure obtained. Thermal behavior of the composites analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis was observed to enhance significantly with the filler volume fraction. The gas permeation through the nanocomposite films markedly decreased with augmenting the filler volume fraction. The decrease in the gas permeation was even more significant than through the composites with ammonium treated montmorillonite. Better thermal behavior of the organic modification owing to the delayed onset of degradation hindered the interface degradation along with detrimental side reactions with polymer itself. Transmission electron microscopic studies indicated the presence of mixed morphology i.e., single layers and the tactoids of varying thicknesses in the composites. The crystallization behavior of polypropylene remained unaffected with OMMT addition. A linear increase in the tensile modulus was observed with filler volume fraction owing to partial exfoliation of the clay.  相似文献

Nanocomposites based on biodegradable poly(?-caprolactone) organo-modified clay have been prepared by melt intercalation using a twin-screw extruder. The screw configuration developed allowed us to obtain an intercalated/exfoliated nanocomposite structure using a modified montmorillonite containing no polar groups, in contrast to previous work using mainly alkyl ammonium containing hydroxyl polar groups in poly(?-caprolactone). Montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared using a specific extrusion profile from a 30 wt% masterbatch of organo-modified clay, which was then diluted at 1, 3 and 5%. Intercalated and/or exfoliated nanocomposites structures were assessed using rheological procedures and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy analysis. Mechanical and thermal properties were found to be strongly dependent on morphology and clay percentage. Crystallinity was only slightly affected by the clay addition. Effect of exfoliation on Young's modulus and thermal stability was investigated. Young's modulus increased significantly and onset degradation temperature measured by TGA was significantly reduced for an exfoliated nanocomposite composition containing 5 wt% organoclay.  相似文献

Ethylene/propylene-random-copolymer(PPR)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by two-stage melt blending. Four types of compatibilizers, including an ethylene-octene copolymer grafted maleic anhydride(POE-g-MA) and three maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylenes(PP-g-MA) with different melt flow indexes(MFI),were used to improve the dispersion of organic clay in matrix. On the other hand, the effects of organic montmorillonite(OMMT) content on the nanocomposite structure in terms of clay dispersion in PPR matrix, thermal behavior and tensile properties were also studied. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) results show that the organic clay layers are mainly intercalated and partially exfoliated in the nanocomposites. Moreover,a PP-g-MA compatibilizer(compatibilizer B) having high MFI can greatly increase the interlayer spacing of the clay as compared with other compatibilizers. With the introduction of compatibilizer D(POE-g-MA),most of the clays are dispersed into the POE phase, and the shape of the dispersed OMMT appears elliptic, which differs from the strip of PP-g-MA.Compared with virgin PPR,the Young’s modulus of the nanocomposite evidently increases when a compatibilizer C(PP-g-MA) with medium MFI is used. For the nanocomposites with compatibilizer B and C,their crystallinities(X_c) increase as compared with that of the virgin PPR. Furthermore, the increase of OMMT loadings presents little effect on the melt temperature(T_m) of the PPR/OMMT nanocomposites, and slight effect on their crystallization temperature(T_c).Only compatibilizer B can lead to a marked increases in crystallinity and T_c of the nanocomposite when the OMMT content is 2 wt%.  相似文献

Polyamide 6/polypropylene (PA6/PP = 70/30 parts) blends containing 4 phr (parts per hundred resin) of organophilic modified montmorillonite (organoclay) were compatibilized with maleic anhydride-grafted ethylene-propylene rubber (EPRgMA). The blends were melt compounded in twin screw extruder followed by injection molding. The mechanical properties of PA6/PP nanocomposites were studied by tensile and flexural tests. The microstructure of the nanocomposite were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The dynamic mechanical properties of the PA6/PP blend-based nanocomposites were analyzed by using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). The rheological properties were conducted from plate/plate rheometry via dynamic frequency sweep scans. The melt viscosity in a high shear rate region was performed by using a capillary rheometer. The strength and stiffness of the PA6/PP-based nanocomposites were improved significantly with the incorporation of EPRgMA. Adding EPRgMA to the PA6/PP blends resulted in a finer dispersion of the PP phase. TEM and XRD results revealed that the organoclay was dispersed more homogeneously in the presence of EPRgMA, however, mostly in the PA6 phase of the blends. DMTA results showed that EPRgMA worked as an effective compatibilizer. The storage (G′) and loss moduli (G″) assessed by plate/plate rheometry of PA6/PP blends increased with the incorporation of EPRgMA and organoclay. Furthermore, the apparent shear viscosity of the PA6/PP blend increased significantly for the EPRgMA compatibilized PA6/PP/organoclay nanocomposite. This was traced to the formation of an interphase between PA6 and PP (via PA6-g-EPR) and effective intercalation/exfoliation of the organoclay.  相似文献

Thermo-oxidative effects on the surface energy of polypropylene were measured by inverse gas chromatography as a function of exposure time and temperature. Unaltered polypropylene had a surface energy of 33 mJ/m2. Oxidized polypropylene, after exposure to air at temperatures of 100 °C and 110 °C, had a range of maximum surface energies from 38 to 41 mJ/m2. Comparisons between FTIR carbonyl peak growth and the surface energy showed that both methods detect oxidation, though the increase in surface energy is detected before the carbonyl peak growth is noticeable. The work of adhesion predicted by the surface free energies obtained in this work between a coated calcium carbonate and polypropylene changes by 10% due to the oxidation of the polymer at 110 °C.  相似文献

Vermiculite clay (VMT) was organically modified with a quaternary organic salt and added to polypropylene (PP). The compounds were prepared by melt intercalation using a twin extruder. The morphology of the composites was investigated through wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The WAXD results suggested that exfoliation phenomena were found for the composites with modified clay. The thermal properties of the obtained composites were studied by means differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) measurements. A variation in the crystallinity of PP was found. A significant increase of the thermal stability of PP was achieved in the presence of the modified VMT.  相似文献

1-Octadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C18 mim]Cl) is a kind of imidazolium ionic liquid with high thermal stability. [C18 mim]Cl was used to modify pristine Na-montmorillonite and a series of organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) with different loading levels of 1-octadecyl-3-methylimidazolium cation ([C18 mim]+) were obtained. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results show that there are different loading levels and aggregative state of [C18 mim]+ in the interlayer of OMMT. The effects of OMMT interlayer micro-circumstances on the PP melting intercalation were studied by XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results indicate that the melting intercalation of PP into the interlayer of OMMT is not only related with d-spaces but also has something to do with the interlayer micro-circumstance of OMMT. Based on these facts, three types of interlayer absorption models of [C18 mim]+ in the interlayer of OMMT were conceived. In addition, the aggregative state of [C18 min]+ in the interlayer of OMMT, interlayer polarity and d-spaces of OMMT were discussed. According to these models, we try to illustrate the effect of interlayer micro-circumstance of OMMT on the PP melting intercalation.  相似文献

Nanocomposites containing pure or organically modified nanoboehmites of different sizes were prepared by melt compounding with polypropylene. The samples were UV light irradiated in artificial accelerated conditions representative of solar irradiation (λ > 300 nm) at 60 °C in air. The chemical modifications resulting from photooxidation were followed by IR and UV-visible spectroscopies. The presence of pristine nanoboehmites was shown to change the rate of oxidation of polypropylene by reducing the oxidation induction period due to the presence of residual processing antioxidant. The differences of the oxidation induction periods between the nanocomposites and the pristine polymer disappear after solvent extraction of the antioxidant. The inefficiency of traditional antioxidant in retarding the photooxidation of polypropylene containing nanodispersed boehmite is proved. Antioxidant migration to the boehmite surface induced by the preferential interaction with the polar filler is proposed as an explanation. The oxidative behaviour of the organically modified boehmites was shown to depend on the type of organic substituent. p-Toluenesulfonate reduces the adsorption of antioxidants while the presence of a long-chain alkyl benzensulfonate increased the oxidation rate by generation of radical initiators.  相似文献
