We investigate the transverse second-harmonic generation in as grown strontium barium niobate (SBN) crystals with a random structure of anti-parallel ferroelectric domains. We consider both, single and counter-propagating pulse geometries. We investigate polarization properties of the second harmonic signal and discuss applications of this process for short pulses characterization. Strongly enhanced second-harmonic generation is observed from a two-dimensional square lattice GaAs/AlGaAs photonic crystal waveguide when the fundamental beam, the second-harmonic beam, or both beams resonantly couple to a leaky eigenmode. P-polarized second-harmonic spectra are obtained for s-polarized, 150-fs pump pulses that are tuned from 5000 to 5600 cm(-1) and directed along the gamma-chi direction of the crystal for various angles of incidence. Compared with off-resonant conditions, enhancements of >1200x in the second-harmonic conversion are observed for resonant coupling of both the fundamental and the second-harmonic fields to leaky eigenmnodes. The angular and spectral positions of the peaks are in good agreement with simulations.  相似文献

A one-dimensional defective photonic crystal structure is proposed with the aim of studying its nonlinear optical properties. In such a structure, extremely enhanced second-harmonic generation with an efficiency ~5 orders of magnitude higher than that of ordinary films is demonstrated in a numerical simulation. Extraordinary phase conditions of the process in such a structure were explored, and efficient forward and backward second-harmonic generation could be achieved simultaneously. The mechanism of the enhancement is the high field intensity and efficient wave coupling introduced by light localization in defect states, from which many other nonlinear processes can also benefit.  相似文献

The wavelength dependence of the second-harmonic (SH) generation efficiency has been measured in copper. A strong enhancement of the SH generation has been observed at the onset of interband transitions. Above the absorption edge the second-order polarization is dominated by the nonlinear response of bound electrons.  相似文献

It is shown that one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures are capable of simultaneously satisfying the phase and group-velocity matching conditions for second-harmonic generation involving extremely short light pulses. When these conditions are satisfied, an optical frequency doubler utilizing photonic bandgap structures provides a means for increasing the rate of growth of the second-harmonic signal as a function of the nonlinear-optical interaction length relative to structures designed for quasi-matched interactions and affords possibilities for enhancing the frequency doubling efficiencies independently of the matching length in the bulk nonlinear material. Polarization and azimuthal dependencies of optical second-harmonic generation at the surface of cubic ionic crystals have been measured on polished surfaces of BaF2 (111) and (100), CaF2 (111) and NaCl (111), using a fundamental wavelength of 532 nm. The results are interpreted in terms of available theory, which shows that for transparent cubic media only the dipolar surface contribution depends on the crystal orientation. For BaF2 (111) and NaCl (111) the crystallineC 3vgeometry could be identified but not for CaF2 (111). Although the nature of the electronic surface structure giving rise to a dipolar polarizability remains undetermined, the experimental result suggests that it may be due to impurity or defect states in the band gap at the surface.  相似文献

We study the efficiency of the second-harmonic generation with the zeroth-order Bessel beam (SHGzoBB) in uniaxial crystals. We show that the conversion efficiency is always less than that of the second-harmonic generation with the Gaussian beam (SHGGB). The fundamental reason relies on the fact that the advantage associated with the ??nondiffractive?? nature of the Bessel beam is not sufficient to compensate the disadvantage of its wave-vector distribution. We show that the zeroth-order Bessel beam is not the optimum beam for the second-harmonic generation in uniaxial crystals.  相似文献

1 resonances for clean and H covered surfaces shift as a function of the dc field in agreement with experiment. This suggests the presence of built-in electric fields whose strength depends on the H coverage, and which are strongly localized in the subsurface region. Received: 20 September 1998  相似文献

Ferroelectric properties of thin (1.5–4 μm planar cells of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture are studied using electro-optic measurements, second-harmonic generation (SHG) and SHG interferometry. A switching behaviour of the FLC cells in external dc electric fields is observed. It is characterised by rotation of the polarisation plane of the transmitted light and by changes in the SHG intensity, phase and anisotropy dependences, which are attributed to a collective motion of the system as a ferroelectric uniform state with C2 symmetry. Second-harmonic generation in KNbO3 crystals has been studied with CW and pulsed AlxGa1?xAs and dye lasers. High conversion efficiencies were obtained by noncritical Type I phase-matching at room temperature for the wavelength λPM = (860±2) nm using the nonlinear optical coefficient d32 = 21 pm/V. The measured peak power was P2ω=13.6 μW for a fundamental power Pω=21 mW with a crystal of l = 8.97 mm in length. The phase-matching wavelength in the orthorhombic phase of KNbO3 can be temperature tuned between 838 nm (for T = -36°C) and 950 nm (for T = +180°C).  相似文献

An investigation of the polarization and temperature dependence of surface second-harmonic generation (SHG) at the air-water interface shows that the intensity of the SHG signal decreases over the range 20–70°C. Accounting for the changes in the SHG polarization behaviour with temperature to extract the relative temperature dependence of Xzzz shows that it is similar to that obtained from simulation studies. The role of the interfacial refractive index in the interpretation of the SHG signals is addressed.  相似文献

Scaling laws of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in nonlinear Bragg stacks (or finite one-dimensional photonic crystals) as a function of the number N of periods are explored. While it is known that SHG scales like the sixth power of N when phase matching is achieved, we find maximal scaling like the eighth power of N under appropriate non-phase-matching conditions with the pump and harmonic waves being resonant with band-edge states. In this framework we introduce the concept of self-adaptive coherence length that scales with the system length. An analytical treatment based on coupled-mode equations clarifies the conditions for obtaining different scaling laws as a function of filling factor in the photonic gap map.  相似文献

The intensity and the phase in surface second-harmonic generation were simultaneously measured by use of an ac optical balanced homodyne detection system. In this system the surface second-harmonic wave was superimposed upon a local oscillator wave generated by a barium borate nonlinear optical crystal and then detected as an interference signal. Extremely high sensitivity of 3 aW (6 photons/s) and high precision were achieved by use of a lock-in amplifier, in which an interference signal of fundamental waves was used as a reference signal. Simultaneous measurement of the intensity and the phase in surface second-harmonic waves generated from native-oxidized Si(111) surfaces is demonstrated.  相似文献

The second-harmonic generation in thin (from 430 to 2330 nm) tetra-aminodiphenyl films obtained by thermal evaporation in vacuum is investigated. The dependences of the quadratic optical susceptibility on the film thickness are analyzed for several models assuming different location of nonlinear sources. The film nonlinearity is shown to have a bulk character.  相似文献

Polarization vortices exist in the focus of a class of vector beams, the lowest order of which possess full vector symmetry about the axis of propagation of the beam. At high numerical apertures these beams are known to exhibit large, local, longitudinal fields in the focal region. At an interface these fields can be many times stronger than the largest available transverse component and are therefore candidates for a variety of different experiments in surface physics. The observation of vortex-driven surface second-harmonic generation at smooth metal and semiconductor surfaces and thin films is reported. By comparing the response to that of a purely transverse field, we show that the smooth surface responds primarily to the longitudinal field component.  相似文献

An electric-field-induced second-harmonic-generation signal in a nematic liquid crystal is used to map the electric field in an integrated-circuit-like sample. Since the electric-field-induced second-harmonic-generation signal intensity exhibits a strong dependence on the polarization of the incident laser beam, both the amplitude and the orientation of the electric field vectors can be measured. Combined with scanning second-harmonic-generation microscopy, three-dimensional electric field distribution can be easily visualized with high spatial resolution of the order of 1 microm.  相似文献
