In 1956 Lee and Yang suggested that parity might be violated and, if nature were so, they further described a recipe on how to exploit that broken symmetry to measure the muon??s magnetic moment. Of course parity violation was very soon confirmed in the weak interactions and many generations of experiments since then have led to a determination of ?? ?? to better than part-per-billion precision. A new experiment proposed for Fermilab is planned to push this precision further still, being motivated by the sensitive comparison of measurement to exquisite theory. We report on the current comparison, which exceeds three standard deviations, and the plans and promise for the future experimental effort.  相似文献

FLAIR will be the next-generation facility for physics with low-energy antiprotons, providing antiprotons at energies from tens of MeV down to rest. It will also offer unique possibilities for physics with highly charged ions at very low energies. The FLAIR facility will have two deceleration rings, the LSR which will decelerate antiprotons to 300 keV and the USR which will bring them down further to 20 keV. The LSR will consist of the present CRYRING at the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory. During the next few years, CRYRING will be modified with respect to injection and extraction, to allow injection of 30 MeV antiprotons and to provide it with both fast (single-turn) and slow (resonant) extraction at a variable energy. We here describe plans and preparations for the transfer of CRYRING to FLAIR, giving, in particular, an overview of new components for injection and extraction.  相似文献

In the paper, by using the example of a rigorous formulation and rigorous proof of the Maxwell distribution, estimates for the distribution in dependence of the parameter N (the number of particles) are established. Further, the problem concerning the creation of dimers in classical gas is regarded as an analog of Bose condensation, and estimates for the lower level of the analog of Bose condensation are proved. The relationship between this level and the theory of “capture” in the scattering problem corresponding to interaction in the form of Lennard-Jones potential is clarified. The equation of state of a nonideal gas as a result of pairwise interaction of particles in the Lennard-Jones and Kihara models is derived. New quantum equations for the transfer of neutral gas consisting of particles with evenly and oddly many neutrons in capillaries and nanotubes are also presented. The cross section for dijet photoproduction at high transverse energies is presented as a function of the transverse energies and the pseudorapidities of the jets. The measurement is performed using a sample of ep-interactions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.3 pb, recorded by the ZEUS detector. Jets are defined by applying a -clustering algorithm to the hadrons observed in the final state. The measured cross sections are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations. In a kinematic regime where theoretical uncertainties are expected to be small, the measured cross sections are higher than these calculations. This paper describes the results of a large-scale questionnaire survey that ascertained children's perceptions of their noise environment and the relationships of the children's perceptions to objective measures of noise. Precision, specificity, and consistency of responding was established through the use of convergent measures. Two thousand and thirty-six children completed a questionnaire designed to tap (a) their ability to discriminate different classroom listening conditions; (b) the noise sources heard at home and at school; and (c) their annoyance by these noise sources. Teachers completed a questionnaire about the classroom noise sources. Children were able to discriminate between situations with varying amounts and types of noise. A hierarchy of annoying sound sources for the children was established. External L(Amax) levels were a significant factor in reported annoyance, whereas external L(A90) and L(A99) levels were a significant factor in determining whether or not children hear sound sources. Objective noise measures (L(A90) and L(A99)) accounted for 45% of the variance in children's reporting of sounds in their school environment. The current study demonstrates that children can be sensitive judges of their noise environments and that the impact of different aspects of noise needs to be considered. Future work will need to specify the factors underlying the developmental changes and the physical and location dimensions that determine the school effects.  相似文献

We extract the transverse momentum distribution of effective partons using the spectra of Ω, Ξ, Λ and ϕ hadrons measured by the STAR Collaboration from Au + Au collisions at $ \sqrt {s_{NN} } $ \sqrt {s_{NN} } = 200 GeV at RHIC. The extracted momentum distribution of strange quarks is flatter than that of up/down quarks consistent with hydrodynamics expansion in partonic phase prior to hadronization. Consistency in quark ratios derived from various hadron spectra gives clear evidence for hadron production as suggested by quark coalescence or recombination model.  相似文献

The Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has been providing collisions of polarized protons at a beam energy of 100 GeV since 2001. Equipped with two full Siberian snakes in each ring, polarization is preserved during acceleration from injection to 100 GeV. However, the intrinsic spin resonances beyond 100 GeV are about a factor of 2 stronger than those below 100 GeV making it important to examine the impact of these strong intrinsic spin resonances on polarization survival and the tolerance for vertical orbit distortions. Polarized protons were first accelerated to the record energy of 205 GeV in RHIC with a significant polarization measured at top energy in 2005. This Letter presents the results and discusses the sensitivity of the polarization survival to orbit distortions.  相似文献

A search for events containing two or more high-transverse-momentum isolated leptons has been performed in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the full collected data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 480 pb−1. The number of observed events has been compared with the prediction from the Standard Model, searching for possible deviations, especially for multi-lepton events with invariant mass larger than 100 GeV. Good agreement with the Standard Model has been observed. Total and differential cross sections for di-lepton production have been measured in a restricted phase space dominated by photon–photon collisions.  相似文献

Elastic and proton–dissociative photoproduction of , and vector mesons (, , respectively) have been measured in interactions at HERA up to GeV, where t is the four-momentum transfer squared at the photon–vector–meson vertex. The analysis is based on a data sample in which photoproduction reactions were tagged by detection of the scattered positron in a special-purpose calorimeter. This limits the photon virtuality, , to values less than 0.01 GeV, and selects a average center-of-mass energy of = 94 GeV. Results for the differential cross sections, , for , and mesons are presented and compared to the results of recent QCD calculations. Results are also presented for the t-dependence of the pion-pair invariant-mass distribution in the mass region and of the spin-density matrix elements determined from the decay-angle distributions. The Pomeron trajectory has been derived from measurements of the W dependence of the elastic differential cross sections for both and mesons. We recall that at both the intermittency transitions and the Feigenbaum attractor, in unimodal maps of non-linearity of order ζ > 1, the dynamics rigorously obeys the Tsallis statistics. We account for theq-indices and the generalized Lyapunov coefficients λq that characterize the universality classes of the pitchfork and tangent bifurcations. We identify the Mori singularities in the Lyapunov spectrum at the onset of chaos with the appearance of a special value for the entropic indexq. The physical area of the Tsallis statistics is further probed by considering the dynamics near criticality and glass formation in thermal systems. In both cases a close connection is made with states in unimodal maps with vanishing Lyapunov coefficients.  相似文献

Searches for pair-produced charginos and neutralinos with R-parity violating decays have been performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 56 pb collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. An important consequence of R-parity violation is that the lightest supersymmetric particle becomes unstable. The searches have been performed under the assumptions that the lightest supersymmetric particle promptly decays and that only one R-parity violating coupling is dominant for each of the decay modes considered. Such processes would yield multiple leptons, jets plus leptons, or multiple jets with or without significant missing energy in the final state. No excess of such events above Standard Model backgrounds has been observed. Limits are presented on the production cross-sections of gauginos in R-parity violating scenarios. An overview of direct mass measurements of exotic nuclei at the FRS-ESR facility at GSI is given. The nuclides are produced at relativistic energies by projectile fragmentation and fission, separated in-flight at the fragment separator FRS and injected into the storage ring ESR. Mass measurements are performed using Schottky and Isochronous Mass Spectrometry, which both allow for high precision measurements with single-ion sensitivity. Recent experimental developments are summarized, and examples for measurement results are given, including applications in nuclear structure physics and astrophysics, comparisons with mass predictions, and the search for new isotopes and isomers. Further research potential will be available at next-generation fragment-separator-storage-ring facilities such as the Super-FRS-CR-NESR complex at the future FAIR facility.  相似文献

An intensive program of n-p measurement of spin observables in elastic and pion production reactions has been performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute taking advantage of the high intensity polarized neutron beam. In the elastic reaction 16 different spin observables have been measured for kinetic energies from 210 to 590 MeV with the centre of mass angular range from 60 to 180 degrees. This will allow to perform direct reconstruction in the model independent way of the isospin I=0 scattering amplitudes in elastic NN interaction. Three body final state process \(\vec np - pp\pi ^ - \) with polarized neutrons in exclusive experiment has been investigated.  相似文献
