In part I we have studied a map of osculating elements of an affine Cayley-Klein (CK-) plane into the Lie algebra A4(2) of the aequiform transformations A4(2) of the given plane A2(, 2). If we use the real projective space P3() over A4(2) each osculating element defines a straight line in P3(). We now give a one parameter motion in A4(2) and study second order properties and their analogon in the Lie algebra and P3(), respectively. We show that the wellknown relationship between the points of the moving frame and the osculating circles of the point paths in the fixed frame may be interpreted as part of a quadratic map of certain straight Lines of P3(). An analogous result holds for the curvature of pairs of envelopes; the mapV induced in P3() than is contained in a cubic relationship of straight lines.

Out of a right, circular cylinder of height H and cross-section a disc of radius R+ one removes a stack of nH/ parallel, equi-spaced cylinders Cj,j=1,2,...,n, each of radius R and height . Here , are fixed positive numbers and is a positive parameter to be allowed to go to zero. The union of the Cj almost fills in the sense that any two contiguous cylinders Cj are at a mutual distance of the order of and that the outer shell, i.e., the gap S=-o has thickness of the order of (o is obtained from by formally setting =0). The cylinder from which the Cj are removed, is an almost disconnected structure, it is denoted by , and it arises in the mathematical theory of phototransduction.For each >0 we consider the heat equation in the almost disconnected structure , for the unknown function u, with variational boundary data on the faces of the removed cylinders Cj. The limit of this family of problems as 0 is computed by concentrating heat capacity and diffusivity on the outer shell, and by homogenizing the u within the limiting cylinder o.It is shown that the limiting problem consists of an interior diffusion in o and a boundary diffusion on the lateral boundary S of o. The interior diffusion is governed by the 2-dimensional heat equation in o, for an interior limiting function u. The boundary diffusion is governed by the Laplace–Beltrami heat equation on S, for a boundary limiting function uS. Moreover the exterior flux of the interior limit u provides the source term for the boundary diffusion on S. Finally the interior limit u, computed on S in the sense of the traces, coincides with the boundary limit uS. As a consequence of the geometry of , local arguments do not suffice to prove convergence in o, and also we have to take into account the behavior of the solution in S. A key, novel idea consists in extending equi-bounded and equi-Hölder continuous functions in -dependent domains, into equi-bounded and equi-Hölder continuous functions in the whole N, by means of the Kirzbraun–Pucci extension technique.The biological origin of this problem is traced, and its application to signal transduction in the retina rod cells of vertebrates is discussed. A comprehensive class of cutting planes for the symmetric travelling salesman problem (TSP) is proposed which contains the known comb inequalities, the path inequalities and the 3-star constraints as special cases. Its relation to the clique tree inequalities is discussed. The cutting planes are shown to be valid for a relaxed version of the TSP, the travelling salesman problem on a road network, and—under certain conditions—to define facets of the polyhedron associated with this problem.  相似文献

Continuing previous work, we discuss applications of our summation/integration procedure to some classes of complex slowly convergent series. Especially, we consider the series of the form , where 0<v1 andR(s) is a rational function. Such cases were recently studied by Gautschi, using the Laplace transform method. Also, we give an appropriate method for calculating values of the Riemann zeta function , which can be transformed to a weighted integral on (0,+)of the functiont exp (–z/2)log(1- m 2 t 2))cos(z arctan( m t, m >=2/((2m+1)),m0, involving the hyperbolic weightw(t)=1/cosh2 t. We show that no xed number of parallel repetitions suces in order to reduce the error in two-prover one-round proof systems from one constant to another. Our results imply that the recent bounds proven by Ran Raz, showing that the number of rounds that suffice is inversely proportional to the answer length, are nearly best possible.* Incumbent of the Joseph and Celia Reskin Career Development Chair. We discuss elliptic Plücker transformations of three-dimensional elliptic spaces. These are permutations on the set of lines such that any two related (orthogonally intersecting or identical) lines go over to related lines in both directions. It will be shown that for classical elliptic 3-spaces a bijection of its lines is already a Plücker transformation, if related lines go over to related lines. Spaces called rectangular spaces were introduced in [5] as incidence spaces (P,G) whose set of linesG is equipped with an equivalence relation and whose set of point pairs P2 is equipped with a congruence relation , such that a number of compatibility conditions are satisfied. In this paper we consider isomorphisms, automorphisms, and motions on the rectangular spaces treated in [5]. By an isomorphism of two rectangular spaces (P,G, , ) and (P,G, , ) we mean a bijection of the point setP onto P which maps parallel lines onto parallel lines and congruent points onto congruent points. In the following, we consider only rectangular spaces of characteristic 2 or of dimension two. According to [5] these spaces can be embedded into euclidean spaces. In case (P,G, , ) is a finite dimensional rectangular space, then every congruence preserving bijection ofP onto P is in fact an isomorphism from (P,G, , ) onto (P,G, , ) (see (2.4)). We then concern ourselves with the extension of isomorphisms. Our most important result is the theorem which states that any isomorphism of two rectangular spaces can be uniquely extended to an isomorphism of the associated euclidean spaces (see (3.2)). As a consequence the automorphisms of a rectangular space (P,G, , ) are precisely the restrictions (onP) of the automorphisms of the associated euclidean space which fixP as a whole (see (3.3)). Finally we consider the motions of a rectangular space (P,G, , ). By a motion of(P. G,, ) we mean a bijection ofP which maps lines onto lines, preserves parallelism and satisfies the condition((x), (y)) (x,y) for allx, y P. We show that every motion of a rectangular space can be extended to a motion of the associated euclidean space (see (4.2)). Thus the motions of a rectangular space (P,G, , ) are seen to be the restrictions of the motions of the associated euclidean space which mapP into itself (see (4.3)). This yields an explicit representation of the motions of any rectangular plane (see (4.4)).

A Singer cycle in GL(n,q) is an element of order q permuting cyclically all the nonzero vectors. Let be a Singer cycle in GL(2n,2). In this note we shall count the number of lines in PG (2n-1,2) whose orbit under the subgroup of index 3 in the Singer group is a spread.
