The present paper addresses experimental studies of Reynolds number effects on a turbulent boundary layer with separation, reattachment, and recovery. A momentum thickness Reynolds number varies from 1,100 to 20,100 with a wind tunnel enclosed in a pressure vessel by varying the air density and wind tunnel speed. A custom-built, high-resolution laser Doppler anemometer provides fully resolved turbulence measurements over the full Reynolds number range. The experiments show that the mean flow is at most a very weak function of Reynolds number while turbulence quantities strongly depend on Reynolds number. Roller vortices are generated in the separated shear layer caused by the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. Empirical Reynolds number scalings for the mean velocity and Reynolds stresses are proposed for the upstream boundary layer, the separated region, and the recovery region. The inflectional instability plays a critical role in the scaling in the separated region. The near-wall flow recovers quickly downstream of reattachment even if the outer layer is far from an equilibrium state. As a result, a stress equilibrium layer where a flat-plate boundary layer scaling is valid develops in the recovery region and grows outward moving downstream.  相似文献

The flow fields in the neighbourhoods of series vascular stenoses are studied numerically for the Reynolds numbers from 100 to 4000, diameter constriction ratios of 0.2–0.6 and spacing ratios of 1, 2, 3, 4 and ∞. In this study, it has been further verified that in the laminar flow region, the numerical predictions by kω turbulence model matched those by the laminar‐flow modelling very well. This suggests that the kω turbulence model is capable of the prediction of the laminar flow as well as the prediction of the turbulent stenotic flow with good accuracy. The extent of the spreading of the recirculation region from the first stenosis and its effects on the flow field downstream of the second stenosis depend on the stenosis spacing ratio, constriction ratio and the Reynolds number. For c1 = 0.5 with c2c1, the peak value of wall vorticity generated by the second stenosis is always less than that generated by the first stenosis. However, the maximum centreline velocity and turbulence intensity at the second stenosis are higher than those at the first stenosis. In contrast, for c1 = 0.5 with c2 = 0.6, the maximum values at the second stenosis are much higher than those at the first stenosis whether for centreline velocity and turbulence intensity or for wall vorticity. The peak values of the wall vorticity and the centreline disturbance intensity both grow up with the Reynolds number increasing. The present study shows that the more stenoses can result in a lower critical Reynolds number that means an earlier occurrence of turbulence for the stenotic flows. An experiment in a turbulent non-premixed flat flame was carried out in order to investigate the effect of swirl intensity on the flow and combustion characteristics. First, stream lines and velocity distribution in the flow field were obtained using PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method in a model burner. In contrast with the axial flow without swirl, highly swirled air induced streamlines going along the burner tile, and its backward flow was generated by recirculation in the center zone of the flow field. In the combustion, the flame shape with swirled air also became flat and stable along the burner tile with increment of the swirl number. Flame structure was examined by measuring OH and CH radicals intensity and by calculating Damkohler number (Da) and turbulence Reynolds number (Re T ). It appeared that luminescence intensity decreased at higher swirl number due to the recirculated flue gas, and the flat flames were comprised in the wrinkled laminar-flame regime. Backward flow by recirculation of the flue gas widely contacted on the flame front, and decreased the flame temperature and emissions concentration as thermal NO. The homogeneous temperature field due to the widely flat flame was obtained, and the RMS in the high temperature region was rather lower at higher swirl number. Consequently, the stable flat flame with low NO concentration was achieved.  相似文献

The drag of non-evaporating, spherical, liquid droplets was measured in turbulent flow fields at parametric ranges relevant to spray combustion, characterized by the droplet Reynolds number, and the intensity and spatial scales of turbulence. The experimental apparatus comprised a wind-tunnel and a piezo-electric droplet generator. The procedure was to inject water droplets of uniform size co-currently and continuously with vertical turbulent air flows while droplet velocity was measured at different elevations using laser-Doppler velocimetry. Turbulence was characterized using hot-wire anemometry prior to droplet injection. Drag coefficients were calculated using these main measurements and the law of conservation of mechanical energy. Reynolds numbers were investigated in the range 10–100, in terms of the equivalent spherical diameter of a droplet, and the mean relative speed between the ambient gaseous field and the droplets. Weber numbers were much less than unity so droplets were effectively spherical. Relative intensities of turbulence were investigated in the range 20–65 percent, in terms of the mean relative speed. Spatial scales of turbulence were large in comparison to the droplets; the ratio between the spatial integral scale and the droplet diameter was in the range 11–38, and the Kolmogorov scale was comparable in size or smaller than the droplet diameter. Experimental data showed that the drag in turbulent fields under these conditions is not significantly different than that of solid spheres in a quiescent field at the same Reynolds number. The financial support of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Manufacturing Research Corporation of Ontario is gratefully acknowledged.  相似文献

The present study reports measurements of a turbulent boundary layer in an open-channel flow using fiber-optic laser Doppler anemometry. The Reynolds numbers based on momentum thickness and depth of flow are in the range 750≤Re θ ≤2,400 and 15,300≤Re h ≤54,200, respectively. It is shown that an accurate estimate of the wall shear stress can be made by fitting a fifth-order polynomial to the near-wall data. The effect of Reynolds number on the mean turbulence intensity and triple correlation is examined using both conventional scaling laws and the recent scaling laws proposed by George and Castillo. The present results show that different scaling laws lead to different conclusions on low Reynolds number effects.  相似文献

We report multitude scaling laws for isotropic fully developed decaying turbulence through group theoretic method employing on the spectral equations both for modelling and without any modelling of nonlinear energy transfer. For modelling, besides the existence of classical power law scalings, an exponential decay of turbulent energy in time is obtained subject to exponentially decaying integral length scale at infinite Reynolds number limit. For the transfer without modelling, at finite Reynolds number, in addition to general power law decay of turbulence intensity with integral length scale growing as a square root of time, an exponential decay of energy in time is explored when integral length scale remains constant. Both the power and exponential decaying laws of energy agree to the theoretical results of George (1992), George and Wang (2009) and experimental results of fractal grid generated turbulence by Hurst and Vassilicos (2007). At infinite Reynolds number limit, a general power law scaling is obtained from which all classical scaling laws are recovered. Further, in this limit, turbulence exhibits a general exponential decaying law of energy with exponential decaying integral length scale depending on two scaling group parameters. The role of symmetry group parameters on turbulence dynamics is discussed in this study.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to study the flow patterns, time-averaged velocity field, and turbulence properties of the flow in the interdisk midplane between two shrouded co-rotating disks at the interdisk spacing to disk radius ratio S = 0.1 and rotating Reynolds number Re = 2.25 × 105. A quadrangle core flow structure rotating at a frequency 75% of the disks’ rotating frequency was observed. The flow in the region outside the quadrangle core flow structure consisted of four cellular flow structures. Five characteristic flow regions—the hub-influenced region, solid-body rotation region, buffer region, vortex region, and shroud-influenced region—were identified in the flow field. Circumferential and radial turbulence intensities, Reynolds stresses, turbulence kinetic energy, correlation coefficients, as well as the Lagrangian integral time and length scales of turbulent fluctuations were analyzed and presented. Features of the turbulence properties were found to be closely related to the rotation motion of the inner and outer characteristic flow structures. The circumferential components of the turbulence properties exhibited local minima in the buffer region and maxima in the solid-body rotation and vortex regions, while the radial components of the turbulence intensity, turbulent normal stress, and Lagrangian integral turbulence time scale exhibited maximum values in the buffer region and relatively low values in the regions near the hub and the shroud.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to develop and characterize systematically a new turbulence generator system to yield large turbulent Reynolds numbers in a compact configuration. The effect of the geometric parameters of two families of high-blockage plates on the resulting turbulent flow field was systematically studied: one series of plates was characterized by the number and distribution of circular openings; a second series had non-circular opening(s) with different shapes, distribution and position of the opening(s). The plates were placed upstream of a contoured contraction and the near field at the centerline of the resulting turbulent free jet was characterized by hot-wire anemometry in terms of mean axial velocity, turbulence intensity, turbulence length scales and corresponding Reynolds numbers. The plate with a central, non-circular opening produced the best compromise of highest turbulence levels along with excellent uniformity in average velocity and turbulence intensity, as evidenced by scan in the transverse direction. It appears to be the most promising one. By comparison with more traditional approaches to turbulence generation, we increased the turbulent Reynolds numbers based on the integral length scale to values on the order of 1000, which was one of the design objectives. Other plate geometries also yielded intense turbulence, but, in some cases, exhibited spurious frequency peaks in their power spectrum. The turbulent generation approach is to be adapted to combustion studies to reproduce conditions typical of practical system in relatively small experimental set-ups that are well-suited for bench-top experiments.  相似文献

A particular pressure-driven flow in a plane channel is considered, in which one of the walls moves with a constant speed that makes the mean shear rate and the friction at the moving wall vanish. The Reynolds number considered based on the friction velocity at the stationary wall (uτ,S) and half the channel height (h) is Reτ,S = 180. The resulting mean velocity increases monotonically from the stationary to the moving wall and exhibits a substantial logarithmic region. Conventional near-wall streaks are observed only near the stationary wall, whereas the turbulence in the vicinity of the shear-free moving wall is qualitatively different from typical near-wall turbulence. Large-scale-structures (LSS) dominate in the center region and their spanwise spacing increases almost linearly from about 2.3 to 4.2 channel half-heights at this Reτ,S. The presence of LSS adds to the transport of turbulent kinetic energy from the core region towards the moving wall where the energy production is negligible. Energy is supplied to this particular flow only by the driving pressure gradient and the wall motion enhances this energy input from the mean flow. About half of the supplied mechanical energy is directly lost by viscous dissipation whereas the other half is first converted from mean-flow energy to turbulent kinetic energy and thereafter dissipated.  相似文献

Mesoscale chemical reactors capable of operating in the turbulent flow regime, such as confined impinging jets reactors (CIJR), offer many advantages for rapid chemical processing at the microscale. One application where these reactors are used is flash nanoprecipitation, a method for producing functional nanoparticles. Because these reactors often operate in a flow regime just beyond transition to turbulence, modeling flows in these reactors can be problematic. Moreover, validation of computational fluid dynamics models requires detailed and accurate experimental data, the availability of which has been very limited for turbulent microscale flows. In this work, microscopic particle image velocimetry (microPIV) was performed in a mesoscale CIJR at inlet jet Reynolds numbers of 200, 1,000, and 1,500. Pointwise and spacial turbulence statistics were calculated from the microPIV data. The flow was observed to be laminar and steady in the entire reactor at a Reynolds number of 200. However, at jets Reynolds numbers of 1,000 and 1,500, instabilities as a result of the jets impinging along the centerline of the reactor lead to a highly turbulent impingement region. The peak magnitude of the normalized Reynolds normal and shear stresses within this region were approximately the same for the Reynolds numbers of 1,000 and 1,500. The Reynolds shear stress was found to exhibit a butterfly shape, consistent with a flow field dominated by an oblique rocking of the impingement zone about the center of the reactor. Finally, the spatial auto- and cross-correlations velocity fluctuations were calculated and analyzed to obtain an understanding of size of the coherent structures.  相似文献

We investigate spatial resolution issues in hot-wire anemometry measurements of turbulence intensity and energy spectra. Single normal hot-wire measurements are simulated by means of filtering direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent channel flow at Ret = 934Re_\tau = 934. Through analysis of the two-dimensional energy spectra from the DNS, the attenuation of the small-scale energy levels is documented, especially in the near-wall region. The missing energy displays anisotropic characteristics, and an attempt is made to model this using an empirical equation, thus providing a correction scheme for all wall normal locations. The empirical model is assessed using experimental boundary layer data and shown to effectively correct both the streamwise one-dimensional energy spectra and turbulence intensity at a Reynolds number significantly above that of the DNS.  相似文献

Low-velocity (bulk velocity of 4.4 m/s) and moderate Reynolds (7350) axisymmetrical jet development is studied by hot-film single sensor anemometry. The jet issues from a conical convergent-divergent diffuser with uniform extension (diameter 25 mm). Decreasing the length-to-diameter ratio of the extension tube from 20 down to 0.4 is shown to alter severely the mean velocity profile at the tube outlet from Blasius to top-hat whereas turbulence intensities increases from 6 up to 50%. Next, the influence of the initial velocity profile at the tube outlet on axisymmetrical jet development is assessed. The velocity development exhibits a self-similar far field characteristic for axisymmetrical jet development. Although, the jet centerline decay constant increases and the jet spreading rate decreases as length-to-diameter ratios are increased from 0.4 up to 7.2 for which the initial centerline velocity decreases. Therefore, scaling of the centerline decay constant and inverse scaling of the spreading rate with initial centerline velocity U0 or initial velocity Reynolds number Re0 reported for moderate Reynolds numbers and low initial turbulence levels [18,22] does not hold as the turbulence level exceeds a threshold value in the range 12–27%. In addition, the influence of initial conditions on near and far field turbulence properties is shown. A transition in near field behaviour is observed for length-to-diameters around 3.6. Flow and geometrical configurations under study are relevant to e.g. upper airway flow.  相似文献

The effects of vortex Reynolds number on the statistics of turbulence in a turbulent boundary layer have been investigated. Vortex Reynolds number is defined as the ratio of circulation around the vortex structure to the fluid viscosity. The vortex structure of the outer region was modeled and a full numerical simulation was then conducted using a high-order spectral method. A unit domain of the outer region of a turbulent boundary layer was assumed to be composed of essentially three elements: a wall, a Blasius mean shear, and an elliptic vortex inclined at 45° to the flow direction. The laminar base-flow Reynolds number is roughly in the same range as that of a turbulent boundary layer based on eddy viscosity, and the vortex-core diameter based on the boundary-layer thickness is nearly the same as the maximum mixing length in a turbulent boundary layer. The computational box size, namely, 500, 150, and 250 wall units in the streamwise, surface-normal, and spanwise directions, respectively, is approximately the same as the measured quasi-periodic spacings of the near-wall turbulence-producing events in a turbulent boundary layer. The effects of vortex Reynolds number and the signs of the circulation on the moments of turbulence were examined. The signs mimic the ejection and sweep types of organized motions of a turbulent boundary layer. A vortex Reynolds number of 200 describes the turbulence moments in the outer layer reasonably well.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of the flow dynamics in a channel with a corrugated surface is presented. Particle image velocimetry was used to obtain two-dimensional velocity fields at three different locations along the channel length, over a range of Reynolds numbers. The results show a significant impact of the corrugation waveform on the mean and turbulent flow structure inside the channel. Strong bursting flow originating from the trough, sweeping flow from the bulk region and the vortex shedding off the crest were observed. Their interactions created a complex three-dimensional flow structure extended over almost the entire channel. The mean velocity profiles indicate a strong diffusion of shear. The profiles of various turbulent properties show the enhancement of turbulence in the vicinity of the waveform. It was found that the turbulence in the channel was almost entirely produced in this region above the corrugation trough. Significant momentum transfer from the corrugation wall by the turbulent velocity field was also observed. The mean and turbulent flow behaviour was found to be periodic with respect to the waveform over most of the channel length. The results show the presence of strong turbulence even at the Reynolds number that falls within the conventional laminar range.  相似文献

In high-velocity free-surface flows, air entrainment is common through the interface, and intense interactions take place between turbulent structures and entrained bubbles. Two-phase flow properties were measured herein in high-velocity open channel flows above a stepped chute. Detailed turbulence measurements were conducted in a large-size facility, and a comparative analysis was applied to test the validity of the Froude and Reynolds similarities. The results showed consistently that the Froude similitude was not satisfied using a 2:1 geometric scaling ratio. Lesser number of entrained bubbles and comparatively greater bubble sizes were observed at the smaller Reynolds numbers, as well as lower turbulence levels and larger turbulent length and time scales. The results implied that small-size models did underestimate the rate of energy dissipation and the aeration efficiency of prototype stepped spillways for similar flow conditions. Similarly a Reynolds similitude was tested. The results showed also some significant scale effects. However a number of self-similar relationships remained invariant under changes of scale and confirmed the analysis of Chanson and Carosi (Exp Fluids 42:385-401, 2007). The finding is significant because self-similarity may provide a picture general enough to be used to characterise the air–water flow field in large prototype channels.  相似文献

Air flow field around a surface-mounted hemisphere of a fixed height for two different turbulent boundary layers (thin and thick) are investigated experimentally and numerically. Flow measurements are performed in a wind tunnel using hot-wire anemometer and streamwise component of velocity fluctuation are calculated using a special developed program of the hardware system. Mean surface pressure coefficients and velocity field for the same hemisphere are determined by the numerical simulation. Turbulent flow field and intensity are measured for two types of boundary layers and compared at various sections in both streamwise and spanwise directions. Numerical scheme based on finite volume and SIMPLE algorithm is used to treat pressure and velocity coupling. Studies are performed for Reynolds number, ReH = 32,000. Based on the numerical simulation using RNG kε turbulence model, flow pathlines, separation region and recirculation area are determined for the two types of turbulent boundary layer flows and complex flow field and recirculation regions are identified and presented graphically.  相似文献

Tomographic particle image velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) was applied on a turbulent round air jet to quantitatively assess the accuracy of velocity gradients obtained in the self-similar turbulent region. The jet Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter (d) was Red = 3000. Mean velocity, turbulent intensities, and Reynolds shear stress at the center plane of the jet were measured. In addition, statistical results of Tomo-PIV along the axial direction were assessed by performing a separate set of two-dimensional two-component PIV experiments on a “side view” plane along the jet axis. Moreover, the probability distribution functions of four components of the measured velocity gradients in the axial and radial directions were validated by these “side view” planar PIV data. The root mean square of the velocity divergence values relative to the norm of the velocity gradient tensor was 0.36. Furthermore, the on- and off-diagonal components of the velocity gradients satisfied the axisymmetric isotropy conditions. The divergence error in the data affected only areas with low gradient magnitude. Therefore, turbulent structures in the regions with intense vorticity and dissipation can be closely monitored. On this basis, the joint pdfs of the invariants of the velocity gradient and strain and rotation tensor rates were produced and compared well with those in isotropic turbulence studies.  相似文献

A non-linear eddy-viscosity transition model is presented, tuned by a large experimental data set describing transitional boundary layers. Data have been acquired by TR-PIV on a flat plate placed in a 2D converging-diverging channel with variable opening angle, allowing variation of the adverse pressure gradient, the free-stream turbulence intensity and the flow Reynolds number. Overall, 48 different combinations of these flow parameters encompass different modes of transition from bypass to separated-flow mechanisms, thus allowing fine tuning of the model, spanning significantly different conditions. The model is tuned locally as a function of the turbulent kinetic energy, a Reynolds number based on the wall distance and the ℓ2-norm of the shear rate tensor. A first correlation determines the rotation for alignment of the principal axes of the shear and stress tensors. By a second correlation, the eigenvalues of the stress tensor are obtained. The non-linear eddy-viscosity relation reproduces the anisotropy of the turbulence field observed for both bypass and separated-flow transitional cases. The relation has been applied to another experimental data set that did not participate to the fitting of the model and that is characterized by a different range of Reynolds number and turbulence intensity and a significantly stronger adverse pressure gradient with respect to the tuning dataset. Such application further strengthens the capability of the proposed correlations, that can easily be implemented in existing CFD solvers.  相似文献
