Void growth and coalescence in single crystals are investigated using crystal plasticity based 3D finite element calculations. A unit cell involving a single spherical void and fully periodic boundary conditions is deformed under constant macroscopic stress triaxiality. Simulations are performed for different values of the stress triaxiality, for different crystal orientations, and for low and high work-hardening capacity. Under low stress triaxiality, the void shape evolution, void growth, and strain at the onset of coalescence are strongly dependent on the crystal orientation, while under high stress triaxiality, only the void growth rate is affected by the crystal orientation. These effects lead to significant variations in the ductility defined as the strain at the onset of coalescence. An attempt is made to predict the onset of coalescence using two different versions of the Thomason void coalescence criterion, initially developed in the framework of isotropic perfect plasticity. The first version is based on a mean effective yield stress of the matrix and involves a fitting parameter to properly take into account material strain hardening. The second version of the Thomason criterion is based on a local value of the effective yield stress in the ligament between the voids, with no fitting parameter. The first version is accurate to within 20% relative error for most cases, and often more accurate. The second version provides the same level of accuracy except for one crystal orientation. Such a predictive coalescence criterion constitutes an important ingredient towards the development of a full constitutive model for porous single crystals.  相似文献

State of the art ductile fracture models often rely on simple power laws to describe the strain hardening of the matrix material. Power laws do not distinguish between the two main stages of hardening observed in polycrystals, referred to as stage III and stage IV hardening, and which emerge from the evolution of the dislocation substructure. The aim of this study is to couple a physics based strain hardening law including these two stages to a micromechanics based ductile damage model. One of the main motivations is that, the stage IV constant hardening rate stage, occurring only at large strain, will be attained in most ductile failure problems if not at the overall level of deformation, at least locally around the growing voids. Furthermore, proper modelling of the stage III involving dislocation storage and recovery terms and the transition to stage IV provides a link with the underlying physical mechanisms of deformation and with the microstructure. First, in order to evaluate the effects of the stage III and stage IV hardening on void growth and coalescence, an extensive parametric study is performed on two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric finite element (FE) unit cell calculations, using a Kocks-Mecking type hardening law. The cell calculations demonstrate that accounting for the stage IV hardening can have a profound effect on delaying void coalescence and increasing the ductility. The magnitude of the recovery term during stage III has also a significant effect on the void growth rate. Then, the Kocks-Mecking law is incorporated into the Gologanu-Leblond-Devaux (GLD) porous plasticity model supplemented by two different versions of the Thomason void coalescence criterion. The predictions of the damage model are in good agreement with the results of the FE calculations in terms of the stress-strain curves, the evolution of void shape and porosity, as well as the strain value at the onset of void coalescence.  相似文献

In many ductile metallic alloys, the damage process controlled by the growth and coalescence of primary voids nucleated on particles with a size varying typically between 1 and 100 μm, is affected by the growth of much smaller secondary voids nucleated on inclusions with a size varying typically between 0.1 and 3 μm. The goal of this work is first to quantify the potential effect of the growth of these secondary voids on the coalescence of primary voids using finite element (FE) unit cell calculations and second to formulate a new constitutive model incorporating this effect. The nucleation and growth of secondary voids do essentially not affect the growth of the primary voids but mainly accelerate the void coalescence process. The drop of the ductility caused by the presence of secondary voids increases if the nucleation strain decreases and/or if their volume fraction increases and/or if the primary voids are flat. A strong coupling is indeed observed between the shape of the primary voids and the growth of the second population enhancing the anisotropy of the ductility induced by void shape effects. The new micromechanics-based coalescence condition for internal necking introduces the softening induced by secondary voids growing in the ligament between two primary voids. The FE cell calculations were used to guide and assess the development of this model. The use of the coalescence condition relies on a closed-form model for estimating the evolution of the secondary voids in the vicinity of a primary cavity. This coalescence criterion is connected to an extended Gurson model for the first population including the effect of the void aspect ratio. With respect to classical models for single void population, this new constitutive model improves the predictive potential of damage constitutive models devoted to ductile metal while requiring only two new parameters, i.e. the initial porosity of second population and a void nucleation stress, without any additional adjustment.  相似文献

This work presents a model to represent ductile failure (i.e. failure controlled by nucleation, growth and coalescence) of materials whose irreversible deformation is controlled by several plastic or viscoplastic deformation mechanisms. In addition work hardening may result from both isotropic and kinematic hardening. Damage is represented by a single variable representing void volume fraction. The model uses an additive decomposition of the plastic strain rate tensor. The model is developed based on the definition of damage dependant effective scalar stresses. The model is first developed within the generalized standard material framework and expressions for Helmholtz free energy, yield potential and dissipation potential are proposed. In absence of void nucleation, the evolution of the void volume fraction is governed by mass conservation and damage does not need to be represented by state variables. The model is extended to account for void nucleation. It is implemented in a finite element software to perform structural computations. The model is applied to three case studies: (i) failure by void growth and coalescence by internal necking (pipeline steel) where plastic flow is either governed by the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman model or the Thomason model, (ii) creep failure (Grade 91 creep resistant steel) where viscoplastic flow is controlled by dislocation creep or diffusional creep and (iii) ductile rupture after pre-compression (aluminum alloy) where kinematic hardening plays an important role.  相似文献

The circumferential failure mode of spot welds is investigated under combined loading conditions. Failure mechanisms of spot welds under different loading conditions are first examined by the experimental observations and a plane stress finite element analysis. An approximate limit load analysis for spot welds is then conducted to understand the failure loads of spot welds under combinations of resultant forces and resultant moments with consideration of the global equilibrium conditions only. The approximate limit load solution for circumferential failure is expressed in terms of sheet thickness, nugget diameter and combinations of loads. Failure contours are generated for spot welds under opening and shear loading conditions. The results indicate that failure contours become smaller when the ratio of the sheet thickness to the nugget diameter increases. Based on the approximate limit load solution, a general quadratic failure criterion for spot welds under combined three resultant forces and three resultant moments is proposed with correction factors determined by fitting to the experimental results of spot welds under combined loading conditions. The failure criterion can be used to characterize the failure loads of spot welds with consideration of the effects of sheet thickness, nugget diameter and combinations of loads. Experimental spot weld failure loads under combined opening and shear loading conditions and those under combined shear and twisting loading conditions are shown to be characterized well by the proposed failure criterion. Finally, a simplified general failure criterion for spot welds under three resultant forces and three resultant moments is proposed by neglecting the coupling terms of the resultant forces and moments for convenient use of the failure criterion for engineering applications.  相似文献

Nanoscale contact of material surfaces provides an opportunity to explore and better understand the elastic limit and incipient plasticity in crystals. Homogeneous nucleation of a dislocation beneath a nanoindenter is a strain localization event triggered by elastic instability of the perfect crystal at finite strain. The finite element calculation, with a hyperelastic constitutive relation based on an interatomic potential, is employed as an efficient method to characterize such instability. This implementation facilitates the study of dislocation nucleation at length scales that are large compared to atomic dimensions, while remaining faithful to the nonlinear interatomic interactions. An instability criterion based on bifurcation analysis is incorporated into the finite element calculation to predict homogeneous dislocation nucleation. This criterion is superior to that based on the critical resolved shear stress in terms of its accuracy of prediction for both the nucleation site and the slip character of the defect. Finite element calculations of nanoindentation of single crystal copper by a cylindrical indenter and predictions of dislocation nucleation are validated by comparing with direct molecular dynamics simulations governed by the same interatomic potential. Analytic 2D and 3D linear elasticity solutions based on the Stroh formalism are used to benchmark the finite element results. The critical configuration of homogeneous dislocation nucleation under a spherical indenter is quantified with full 3D finite element calculations. The prediction of the nucleation site and slip character is verified by direct molecular dynamics simulations. The critical stress state at the nucleation site obtained from the interatomic potential is in quantitative agreement with ab initio density functional theory calculation.  相似文献

In this paper, a new analytic criterion for porous solids with matrix obeying Tresca yield criterion is derived. The criterion is micromechanically motivated and relies on rigorous upscaling theorems. Analysis is conducted for both tensile and compressive axisymmetric loading scenarios and spherical void geometry. Finite element cell calculations are also performed for various triaxialities. Both the new model and the numerical calculations reveal a very specific coupling between the mean stress and the third invariant of the stress deviator that results in the yield surface being centro-symmetric and void growth being dependent on the third-invariant of the stress deviator. Furthermore, it is verified that the classical Gurson’s criterion is an upper bound of the new criterion with Tresca matrix.  相似文献

Analyses of the stress and strain fields around smoothly-blunting crack tips in both non-hardening and hardening elastic-plastic materials, under contained plane-strain yielding and subject to mode I opening loads, have been carried out by use of a finite element method suitably formulated to admit large geometry changes. The results include the crack-tip shape and near-tip deformation field, and the crack-tip opening displacement has been related to a parameter of the applied load, the J-integral. The hydrostatic stresses near the crack tip are limited due to the lack of constraint on the blunted tip, limiting achievable stress levels except in a very small region around the crack tip in power-law hardening materials. The J-integral is found to be path-independent except very close to the crack tip in the region affected by the blunted tip. Models for fracture are discussed in the light of these results including one based on the growth of voids. The rate of void-growth near the tip in hardening materials seems to be little different from the rate in non-hardening ones when measured in terms of crack-tip opening displacement, which leads to a prediction of higher toughness in hardening materials. It is suggested that improvement of this model would follow from better understanding of void-void and void-crack coalescence and void nucleation, and some criteria and models for these effects are discussed. The implications of the finite element results for fracture criteria based on critical stress or strain, or both, is discussed with respect to transition of fracture mode and the angle of initial crack-growth. Localization of flow is discussed as a possible fracture model and as a model for void-crack coalescence.  相似文献

A new test method for performing dynamic short-beam shear tests using a momentum trapped Hopkinson pressure bar is proposed. Angle-interlock 3D woven composite specimens were tested under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions to determine the effect of loading rate on damage evolution. The equilibrium condition in the composite specimen under dynamic loads was verified using finite element analysis of the experiment. A high speed camera was used to capture delamination initiation and propagation during both quasi-static and dynamic experiments. Analysis of the load-deflection curves and the high speed images revealed a good correlation between the modes of damage initiation and propagation with the features in the loading response. The apparent inter-laminar shear strength and the bending stiffness increased with rate of loading. While the damage was observed to propagate at a relative steady rate during quasi-static loading, the high rate of energy input during dynamic loading resulted in a rapid propagation of damage and a subsequent loss of stiffness in the composite as noted in the load-deflection curve.  相似文献

Composite laminates offer superior load carrying capacity. Reliable application of structures requires a knowledge of their stress/strain and failure behavior. past treatments involved assumptions in both the stress and failure analyses; they become increasingly more difficult when the failure of the microstructure constituents is to be included in the continuum analysis of the laminates. Recognizing the conventional failure criteria used for composite material analyses, this work adopts the first-ply failure criterion by application of a polynomial function and the finite element procedure. The laminates are modeled by the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory that accounts for moderate rotation. This is because shear effects are more pronounced in composite laminates whose transverse shear modulus is low relative to the Young's modulus. Failure loads are obtained for different laminate thicknesses, stacking sequences and aspect ratios and different failure criteria. The results show that predictions made from the maximum stress criterion are nearly the same as the others, except for those obtained by the Hill criterion.  相似文献

Plastic flow localisation and ductile failure during tensile testing of friction stir welded aluminium specimens are investigated with a specific focus on modelling the local, finite strain, hardening response. In the experimental part, friction stir welds in a 6005A-T6 aluminium alloy were prepared and analysed using digital image correlation (DIC) during tensile testing as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on polished samples and on fracture surfaces. The locations of the various regions of the weld were determined based on hardness measurements, while the flow behaviour of these zones was extracted from micro-tensile specimens cut parallel to the welding direction. The measured material properties and weld topology were introduced into a 3D finite element model, fully coupled with the damage model. A Voce law hardening model involving a constant stage IV is used within an enhanced Gurson type micro-mechanical damage model, accounting for void nucleation, growth and coalescence, as well as void shape evolution. The stage IV hardening, observed in Simar et al. (2010), was found to increase the stiffness during plastic flow localisation as well as to postpone the onset of fracture as determined by the void coalescence criterion. Furthermore, the presence of a second population of voids was concluded to strongly affect the fracture strain of the high strength regions of the welds. This modelling effort links the microstructure and process parameters to macroscopic parameters relevant to the optimisation of the welds.  相似文献

The main aim of this paper is to opens out the meso-mechanism of void growth and coalescence in the matrix materials with graded strain-hardening exponent distribution. For this end, detailed finite element computations of a representative cylindrical cell containing a spherical void have been carried out. According to the FE analyses, significant effects of the strain-hardening exponent gradient (SEG) in the matrix on the void growth and coalescence are revealed: (1) In the homogeneous materials, the void growth and coalescence are slightly dependent on the strain-hardening exponent, however, the SEG distribution in the matrix can increase remarkably the void growth rate and decrease seriously the void coalescence strain. (2) The critical void shapes in the homogeneous materials are mainly governed by the macroscopic stress triaxiality, but due to earlier plastic flow localization in the softer matrix layer, the SEG distribution in the matrix has very significant effects on the deformed void shapes, especially when the stress triaxiality is lower. (3) When the triaxial stress levels are lower, in the homogeneous materials, the shape change mode of the void evolution is dominate so the void growth rate is very low; however, the SEG distribution in the matrix can bring the volume change mode out, as a result of increasing the void growth rate. (4) Comparisons of the numerical results with the existing damage model indicate that the classic damage model cannot give satisfying prediction to the void growth in both the homogeneous strain-hardening matrix and the SEG materials. On the basis of large numbers of numerical computations, a new damage model, which can uniformly describe the void growing in the homogeneous and plasticity gradient materials, is suggested. A mass of element computations have validated that the new damage model can give satisfying agreement with the FE results of cell model.  相似文献

The initial yield surface of 2D lattice materials is investigated under biaxial loading using finite element analyses as well as by analytical means. The sensitivity of initial yield surface to the dominant deformation mode is explored by using both low- and high-connectivity topologies whose dominant deformation mode is either local bending or strut stretching, respectively. The effect of microstructural irregularity on the initial yield surface is also examined for both topologies. A pressure-dependent anisotropic yield criterion, which is based on total elastic strain energy density, is proposed for 2D lattice structures, which can be easily extended for application to 3D cellular solids. Proposed criterion uses elastic constants and yield strengths under uniaxial loading, and does not rely on any arbitrary parameter. The analytical framework developed allows the introduction of new scalar measures of characteristic stresses and strains that are capable of representing the elastic response of anisotropic materials with a single elastic master line under multiaxial loading.  相似文献

A micromechanics model based on the theoretical framework of plastic localization into a band introduced by Rice is developed. The model consists of a planar band with a square array of equally sized cells, with a spherical void located in the centre of each cell. The periodic arrangement of the cells allows the study of a single unit cell for which fully periodic boundary conditions are applied. The micromechanics model is applied to analyze failure by ductile rupture in experiments on double notched tube specimens subjected to combined tension and torsion carried out by the present authors. The stress state is characterized in terms of the stress triaxiality and the Lode parameter. Two rupture mechanisms can be identified, void coalescence by internal necking at high triaxiality and void coalescence by internal shearing at low triaxiality. For the internal necking mechanism, failure is assumed to occur when the deformation localizes into a planar band and is closely associated with extensive void growth until impingement of voids. For the internal shearing mechanism, a simple criterion based on the attainment of a critical value of shear deformation is utilized. The two failure criteria capture the transition between the two rupture mechanisms successfully and are in good agreement with the experimental result.  相似文献

Failure of spot welds under in-plane static loading   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Under in-plane loading conditions, two independent modes contribute to the failure of a spot weld: the in-plane shear mode and the in-plane rotational mode. In this work, the failures of both modes under large static load are examined individually. To study the combined failure of these two modes, two special test coupons are designed. The first coupon contains one spot weld. The second coupon contains five spot welds. Tests conducted in this work show that a very simple force-based failure criterion can be used to predict the failure of a spot weld under large in-plane combined static loads. Current multiaxial failure theory cannot explain this combined failure. This force-based spot weld failure criterion fits current automotive industry needs for body shell finite element application very well.  相似文献
