The adsorption and dissociation of O2 on CuCl(1 1 1) surface have been systematically studied by the density functional theory (DFT) slab calculations. Different kinds of possible modes of atomic O and molecular O2 adsorbed on CuCl(1 1 1) surface and possible dissociation pathways are identified, and the optimized geometry, adsorption energy, vibrational frequency and Mulliken charge are obtained. The calculated results show that the favorable adsorption occurs at hollow site for O atom, and molecular O2 lying flatly on the surface with one O atom binding with top Cu atom is the most stable adsorption configuration. The O-O stretching vibrational frequencies are significantly red-shifted, and the charges transferred from CuCl to oxygen. Upon O2 adsorption, the oxygen species adsorbed on CuCl(1 1 1) surface mainly shows the characteristic of the superoxo (O2), which primarily contributes to improving the catalytic activity of CuCl, meanwhile, a small quantity of O2 dissociation into atomic O also occur, which need to overcome very large activation barrier. Our results can provide some microscopic information for the catalytic mechanism of DMC synthesis over CuCl catalyst from oxidative carbonylation of methanol.  相似文献

Atomic oxygen resulting from the dissociation of O2 on Pd(1 1 1) at low coverage was studied in a variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) in the range from 30 to 210 K. Oxygen atoms, which typically appear as 30-40 pm deep depressions on Pd(1 1 1), occupy fcc hollow sites and form ordered p(2 × 2) islands upon annealing above 180 K. The mobility of the atoms diminishes rapidly below 180 K, with an approximate diffusion barrier of 0.4-0.5 eV. Oxygen atom pairs produced by thermal dissociation of O2 at 160 K occupy both fcc and hcp hollow sites. The atoms travel approximately 0.25 nm after dissociation, and the distribution of pairs is strongly influenced by the presence of subsurface impurities within the Pd sample. At much lower temperatures, the STM tip can dissociate oxygen molecules. Dissociation occurs at sample bias voltages exceeding approximately 0.1 V. Following tip-induced dissociation, the product atoms occupy only fcc hollow sites. Oxygen atoms can be manipulated via short range repulsive interactions with the STM tip.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT) for generalized gradient approximation calculations has been used to study the adsorption of atomic oxygen and water molecules on Ni(1 1 1) and different kind of Ni-Cr(1 1 1) surfaces. The fcc hollow site is energetically the most favorable for atomic oxygen adsorption and on top site is favorable for water adsorption. The Ni-Cr surface has the highest absorption energy for oxygen at 6.86 eV, followed by the hcp site, whereas the absorption energy is 5.56 eV for the Ni surface. The Ni-O bond distance is 1.85 Å for the Ni surface. On the other hand, the result concerning the Ni-Cr surface implies that the bond distances are 1.93-1.95 Å and 1.75 Å for Ni-O and Cr-O, respectively. The surface adsorption energy for water on top site for two Cr atom substituted Ni-Cr surface is 0.85 eV. Oxygen atoms prefer to bond with Cr rather than Ni atoms. Atomic charge analysis demonstrates that charge transfer increases due to the addition of Cr. Moreover, a local density of states (LDOS) study examines the hybridization occurring between the metal d orbital and the oxygen p orbital; the bonding is mainly ionic, and water bonds weakly in both cases.  相似文献

Adsorption of NO on a Pt(1 1 1) surface pre-covered with a p(2 × 2) atomic oxygen layer has been studied in situ by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed XPS using third-generation synchrotron radiation at BESSY II, Berlin, combined with molecular beam techniques and ex situ by low energy electron diffraction and temperature-programmed desorption. O 1s XP spectra reveal that an ordered p(2 × 2)-O layer dramatically changes the adsorption behavior of NO as compared to the clean surface. The atomic oxygen occupies fcc hollow sites, and therefore blocks NO adsorption on these sites, which are energetically preferred on clean Pt(1 1 1). As a consequence, NO populates on-top sites at low coverage. At 110 K for higher coverages, NO can additionally adsorb on hcp hollow sites, thereby inducing a shift of the O 1s binding energy of atomic oxygen towards lower energies by about 0.25 eV. The bond strength of the hcp hollow NO species to the substrate is weakened by the presence of atomic oxygen. A sharp p(2 × 2) LEED pattern is observed for NO adsorption on the oxygen pre-covered surface, up to saturation coverage. The total saturation coverage of NO on Pt(1 1 1) pre-covered with varying amounts of oxygen (below 0.25 ML) decreases linearly with the coverage of oxygen. The initial sticking coefficient of NO is reduced from 0.96 on clean Pt(1 1 1) to 0.88 on a p(2 × 2) oxygen pre-covered surface.  相似文献

Interactions of atomic and molecular hydrogen with perfect and deficient Cu2O(1 1 1) surfaces have been investigated by density functional theory. Different kinds of possible modes of H and H2 adsorbed on the Cu2O(1 1 1) surface and possible dissociation pathways were examined. The calculated results indicate that OSUF, CuCUS and Ovacancy sites are the adsorption active centers for H adsorbed on the Cu2O(1 1 1) surface, and for H2 adsorption over perfect surface, CuCUS site is the most advantageous position with the side-on type of H2. For H2 adsorption over deficient surface, two adsorption models of H2, H2 adsorbing perpendicularly over Ovacancy site and H2 lying flatly over singly-coordinate Cu-Cu short bridge, are typical of non-energy-barrier dissociative adsorption leading to one atomic H completely inserted into the crystal lattice and the other bounded to CuCUS atom, suggesting that the dissociative adsorption of H2 is the main dissociation pathway of H2 on the Cu2O(1 1 1) surface. Our calculation result is consistent with that of the experimental observation. Therefore, Cu2O(1 1 1) surface with oxygen vacancy exhibits a strong chemical reactivity towards the dissociation of H2.  相似文献

Adsorption of CO molecules and Pb atoms on the Ni(1 1 1) and Ni3Al(1 1 1) substrates is studied theoretically within an ab initio density-functional-theory approach. Stable adsorption sites and the corresponding adsorption energies are first determined for stoichiometric surfaces. The three-fold hollow sites (fcc for Pb and hcp for CO) are found most favourable on both substrates. Next, the effect of surface alloying by a substitution of selected topmost substrate atoms by Pb or Ni atoms on the adsorption characteristics is investigated. When the surface Al atoms of the Ni3Al(1 1 1) substrate are replaced by Ni atoms, the Pb and CO adsorption energies approach those for a pure Ni(1 1 1) substrate. The Pb alloying has a more substantial effect. On the Ni3Al(1 1 1) substrate, it reduces considerably adsorption energy of CO. On the Ni(1 1 1) substrate, CO binding strengthens slightly upon the formation of the Ni(1 1 1)p(2×2)-Pb surface alloy, whereas it weakens drastically when the Ni(1 1 1)-Pb surface alloy is formed.  相似文献

Reactions between NO and CO on Rh(1 1 1) surfaces were investigated using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption. NO adsorbed on the fcc, atop, and hcp sites in that order, whereas CO adsorbed initially on the atop sites and then on the hollow (fcc + hcp) sites. The results of experiments with NO exposure on CO-preadsorbed Rh(1 1 1) surfaces indicated that the adsorption of NO on the hcp sites was inhibited by preadsorption of CO on the atop sites, and NO adsorption on the atop and fcc sites was inhibited by CO preadsorbed on each type of site, which indicates that NO and CO competitively adsorbed on Rh(1 1 1). From a Rh(1 1 1) surface with coadsorbed NO and CO, N2 was produced from the dissociation of fcc-NO, and CO2 was formed by the reaction of adsorbed CO with atomic oxygen from dissociated fcc-NO. The CO2 production increased remarkably in the presence of hollow-CO. Coverage of fcc-NO and hollow-CO on Rh(1 1 1) depended on the composition ratio of the NO/CO gas mixture, and a gas mixture with NO/CO ? 1/2 was required for the co-existence of fcc-NO and hollow-CO at 273 K.  相似文献

The adsorption and dissociation of O2 on the perfect and oxygen-deficient Cu2O(1 1 1) surface have been systematically studied using periodic density functional calculations. Different kinds of possible modes of atomic O and molecular O2 adsorbed on the Cu2O(1 1 1) surface are identified: atomic O is found to prefer threefold 3Cu site on the perfect surface and Ovacancy site on the deficient surface, respectively. CuCUS is the most advantageous site with molecularly adsorbed O2 lying flatly over singly coordinate CuCUS-CuCSA bridge on the perfect surface. O2 adsorbed dissociatively on the deficient surface, which is the main dissociation pathway of O2, and a small quantity of molecularly adsorbed O2 has been obtained. Further, possible dissociation pathways of molecularly adsorbed O2 on the Cu2O(1 1 1) surface are explored, the reaction energies and relevant barriers show that a small quantity of molecularly adsorbed O2 dissociation into two O atoms on the deficient surface is favorable both thermodynamically and kinetically in comparison with the dissociation of O2 on the perfect surface. The calculated results suggest that the presence of oxygen vacancy exhibits a strong chemical reactivity towards the dissociation of O2 and can obviously improve the catalytic activity of Cu2O, which is in agreement with the experimental observation.  相似文献

Adsorption of H2 molecule on the Ti (0 0 0 1)-(2 × 1) surface was studied by density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The parallel and vertical absorption cases were investigated in detail by adsorption energy and electronic structure analysis, we obtained three stable configurations of FCC-FCC (the two H atoms adsorption on the two adjacent fcc sites of Ti (0 0 0 1) surface, respectively), HCP-HCP (the two H atoms adsorption on the two adjacent hcp sites of Ti (0 0 0 1) surface, respectively) and FCC-HCP (the one H atom adsorption on the fcc site and the other adsorption on the near hcp site) based on the six different parallel adsorption sites after the H2 molecule dissociates. However, all the end configurations of four vertical adsorption sites were unstable, H2 molecule was very easy to desorb from Ti surface. The H-H bond breaking and Ti-H bond forming result from the H2 molecule dissociation. H-H bond breaking length ranges from 1.9 Å to 2.3 Å for different adsorption configurations due to the strong Ti-H bond forming. The H2 dissociative approach and the end stable configurations formation in parallel adsorption processes are attributed to the quantum mechanics steering effects.  相似文献

We have performed ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) based calculations to observe the reactivity of the Pd(2 1 1) and Cu(2 1 1) surfaces towards O2. In order to properly address the adsorption dynamics, the static potential energy surface calculations have been complemented with first principles molecular dynamics calculations, which reveal interesting steering effects that complicate the dissociation dynamics. We have found that on both surfaces the step microfacets are very reactive and the dissociation of the O2 molecule at room temperature occurs mostly on those sites.  相似文献

Using a first-principles pseudopotential technique, we have investigated the adsorption of CH3OH on the Si(0 0 1) surface. We have found that, in agreement with the overall experimental picture, the most probable chemisorption path for methanol adsorption on silicon (0 0 1) is as follows: the gas phase CH3OH adsorbs molecularly to the electrophilic surface Si atom via the oxygen atom and then dissociates into Si-OCH3 and H, bonded to the electrophilic and nucleophilic surface silicon dimer atoms, respectively. Other possible adsorption models and dissociation paths are also discussed. Our calculations also suggest that the most probable methanol coverage is 0.5 ML, i.e., one molecule per Si-Si dimer, in agreement with experimental evidences. The surface atomic and electronic structures are discussed and compared to available theoretical and experimental data. In addition, we propose that a comparison of our theoretical STM images and calculated vibrational modes for the adsorbed systems with detailed experimental investigations could possibly confirm the presented adsorption picture.  相似文献

The adsorption of dimethylamine on Cu(1 1 0) and Ni(1 1 1) has been studied by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. For Cu(1 1 0), adsorption was molecular at 80 and 300 K and for submonolayer dimethylamine the appearance of A′ and not A″ modes indicated Cs symmetry. Similar bonding was found for Ni(1 1 1) at 170 K. Annealing the adlayer to 350 K resulted in the formation of a new species on Ni(1 1 1), similar to that which has been identified as methylaminocarbyne on Pt(1 1 1). In contrast only molecular dimethylamine was identified on Cu(1 1 0), with H-bonded interactions at high coverage and a potential surface dimer.  相似文献

The adsorption modes of H2O on a Fe-terminated hematite(0 0 0 1) surface have been investigated by first principles Density Functional theory within a periodic slab model and the generalized gradient approximation. Molecular adsorption and dissociative adsorption in monolayer coverage, one H2O per surface Fe, were both considered. Five plausible orientations were studied to determine the most favorable adsorption position. Molecular adsorption is shown to have a small effect on the underlying surface structure, while hydroxylation has a strong effect on the surface geometry. Electronic densities of state calculations reveal details of these different interactions. The heterolytic dissociation, which produces two types of surface hydroxyls, is the preferable adsorption mode, being slightly favored energetically over the molecular adsorption. Homolytic dissociative adsorption, forming a single hydroxyl on surface Fe, is energetically unfavored, even though strong binding interaction (∼3 eV) is found between the OH radical and surface. Dissociative adsorption on an oxidized ferryl site was also studied to investigate suggested local reactivity enhancement.  相似文献

The formation of a well-ordered p(2 × 2) overlayer of atomic nitrogen on the Pt(1 1 1) surface and its reaction with hydrogen were characterized with reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The p(2 × 2)-N overlayer is formed by exposure of ammonia to a surface at 85 K that is covered with 0.44 monolayer (ML) of molecular oxygen and then heating to 400 K. The reaction between ammonia and oxygen produces water, which desorbs below 400 K. The only desorption product observed above 400 K is molecular nitrogen, which has a peak desorption temperature of 453 K. The absence of oxygen after the 400 K anneal is confirmed with AES. Although atomic nitrogen can also be produced on the surface through the reaction of ammonia with an atomic, rather than molecular, oxygen overlayer at a saturation coverage of 0.25 ML, the yield of surface nitrogen is significantly less, as indicated by the N2 TPD peak area. Atomic nitrogen readily reacts with hydrogen to produce the NH species, which is characterized with RAIRS by an intense and narrow (FWHM ∼ 4 cm−1) peak at 3322 cm−1. The areas of the H2 TPD peak associated with NH dissociation and the XPS N 1s peak associated with the NH species indicate that not all of the surface N atoms can be converted to NH by the methods used here.  相似文献

The adsorption of molecular oxygen on the c(2 × 8) reconstruction of quenched Si(1 1 1) surfaces has been studied at the atomic scale using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at room temperature (RT). It has been found that clean well reconstructed c(2 × 8) adatoms do not react with O2 molecules but that a limited oxidation can start where adatom sites arranged in reconstructed structures are present. Comparison between O2 adsorption on Si(1 1 1)-c(2 × 8) and Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 reconstructions coexisting on the same quenched silicon surface has been carried out in detail. For each atomic site present on the surface the variation of reacted sites with exposure has been measured. For low O2 exposures, bright and dark oxygen induced sites appear on the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7, while Si(1 1 1)-c(2 × 8) does not oxidized at all. At high O2 exposures, large oxidation areas have spread on the 7 × 7 reconstruction, preferentially on the faulted halves of the unit cell, and smaller oxidation areas induced by topological defects have grown all around clean un-reacted c(2 × 8) regions.  相似文献

The adsorption of several atomic (H, O, N, S, and C) and molecular (N2, HCN, CO, NO, and NH3) species and molecular fragments (CN, CNH2, NH2, NH, CH3, CH2, CH, HNO, NOH, and OH) on the (1 1 1) facet of platinum, an important industrial and fuel cell catalyst, was studied using self-consistent periodic density functional theory (DFT-GGA) calculations at a coverage of 1/4 ML. The best binding site, energy, and position, as well as an estimated diffusion barrier, of each species were determined. The binding strength for all the species can be ordered as follows: N2 < NH3 < HCN < NO < CO < CH3 < OH < NH2 < H < CN < NH < O < HNO < CH2 < NOH < CNH2 < N < S < CH < C. Although the atomic species generally preferred fcc sites, there was no clear trend in site preference by the molecular species or molecular fragments. The vibrational frequencies of all the stable adsorbates in their best and second best adsorption sites were calculated and found to be in good agreement with experimental values reported in the literature. Finally, the decomposition thermochemistry of NOH, HNO, NO, NH3, N2, CO, and CH3 was analyzed.  相似文献

Electronic, magnetic and structural properties of atomic oxygen adsorbed in on-surface and subsurface sites at the two most densely packed iron surfaces are investigated using density functional theory combined with a thermodynamics formalism. Oxygen coverages varying from a quarter to two monolayers (MLs) are considered. At a 1/4 ML coverage, the most stable on-surface adsorption sites are the twofold long bridge sites on the (1 1 0), and the fourfold-hollow sites on the (1 0 0) surface. The presence of on-surface oxygen atoms enhances the magnetic moments of the atoms of the two topmost Fe layers. Detailed results on the surface magnetic properties, due to O incorporation, are presented as well. Subsurface adsorption is found unfavored. The most stable subsurface O, in tetrahedral positions at the (1 0 0) and octahedral ones at the (1 1 0) surface, are characterized by substantially lower binding than that in the on-surface sites. Subsurface oxygen increases the interplanar distance between the uppermost Fe layers. The preadsorbed oxygen overlayer enhances binding of subsurface O atoms, particularly for tetrahedral sites beneath the (1 1 0) surface.  相似文献

We attempt to correlate qualitatively the surface structure with the chemical activity for a metal surface, Cr(1 1 0), and one of its surface oxides, Cr2O3(0 0 0 1)/Cr(1 1 0). The kinetics and dynamics of CO2 adsorption have been studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Aug er electron spectroscopy (AES), and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), as well as adsorption probability measurements conducted for impact energies of Ei = 0.1-1.1 eV and adsorption temperatures of Ts = 92-135 K. The Cr(1 1 0) surface is characterized by a square shaped LEED pattern, contamination free Cr AES, and a single dominant TDS peak (binding energy Ed = 33.3 kJ/mol, first order pre-exponential 1 × 1013 s−1). The oxide exhibits a hexagonal shaped LEED pattern, Cr AES with an additional O-line, and two TDS peaks (Ed = 39.5 and 30.5 kJ/mol). The initial adsorption probability, S0, is independent of Ts for both systems and decreases exponentially from 0.69 to 0.22 for Cr(1 1 0) with increasing Ei, with S0 smaller by ∼0.15 for the surface oxide. The coverage dependence of the adsorption probability, S(Θ), at low Ei is approx. independent of coverage (Kisliuk-shape) and increases initially at large Ei with coverage (adsorbate-assisted adsorption). CO2 physisorbs on both systems and the adsorption is non-activated and precursor mediated. Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) have been used to parameterize the beam scattering data. The coverage dependence of Ed has been obtained by means of a Redhead analysis of the TDS curves.  相似文献

Supersonic molecular beam technique combined with high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation was applied to the study of the dynamics of dissociative adsorption of oxygen on Ru(0 0 0 1) surface in high coverage region. The Ru(0 0 0 1) surface pre-covered with oxygen atoms of 0.5 monolayer, which corresponds to the p(2 × 1)-O structure, was dosed to oxygen molecules with translational energy of 0.5 eV. Oxygen uptake was compared between the cases with and without the beam source heated in order to verify the effects of internal energy of oxygen. We found drastic enhancement in initial sticking probability of oxygen when the beam source was heated to 1400 K. We concluded that the enhancement of sticking probability is mainly caused by molecular vibrational excitation, indicating that dissociation barrier is located in the exit channel on potential energy surface.  相似文献

Periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations using plane waves had been performed to systematically investigate the stable adsorption amine and its dehydrogenated reaction on Au(1 1 1) surface. The equilibrium configuration including on top, bridge, and hollow (fcc and hcp) sites had been determined by relaxation of the system. The adsorption both NH3 on top site and NH2 on bridge site is favorable on Au(1 1 1) surface, while the adsorption of NH on hollow (fcc) site is preferred. The adsorbates are adsorbed on the gold surface with the interaction between p orbital of adsorbate and the d orbital of gold atoms. The interaction between adsorbate and gold slab is more evident on the first layer than on any others. Furthermore, the dissociation reaction of NH3 on clean gold surface, as well as on the pre-covered oxygen atom and pre-covered hydroxyl group surface had been investigated. The results show that the dehydrogenated reaction energy barrier on the pre-covered oxygen gold surface is lower. The adsorbed O can promote the dehydrogenation of amine. Additionally, OH as the product of the NH3 dissociation reaction participates in continuous dehydrogenation reaction, and the reaction energy barrier is the lowest (22.77 kJ/mol). The results indicated that OHads play a key role in the dehydrogenated reaction on Au(1 1 1) surface.  相似文献
