We report a systematic study of the interplay between molecular orientation, film morphology and luminescence properties of tetracene thin films on epitaxial alumina films on Ni3Al(1 1 1), employing high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). If deposited at low temperatures, tetracene forms laterally disordered and compact films in which at least the first monolayer is oriented parallel to the substrate. For thicknesses in the range of 10 Å or below, these as-deposited films show no luminescence, while thicker films exhibit weak luminescence from higher layers. On annealing to 210 K, tetracene films dewet the AlOx/Ni3Al(1 1 1) surface and transform into an island morphology. At the same time, molecules tend to re-orient into a more upright configuration. In this island configuration, even thin films show luminescence. We can thus conclude that in spite of the insulating nature of the surface, the interaction of flat-lying tetracene molecules with AlOx/Ni3Al(1 1 1) is strong enough to provide at least one efficient non-radiative decay channel.  相似文献

The initial growth of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) surfaces has been studied by coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Prior to Pt deposition, the atomic structure of the near-surface regions of the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) structures were studied using CAICISS, finding changes to the interlayer spacings due to the adsorption of oxygen. Deposition of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O surface led to a random substitutional alloy in the near-surface region at Pt coverages both below and in excess of 1 ML. In contrast, when the surface was treated with 1800 L of atomic oxygen in order to form a NiO(1 1 0) surface, a thin Pt layer was formed upon room temperature Pt deposition. XPS and LEED data are presented throughout to support the CAICISS observations.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption structure of acetic anhydride on a TiO2(1 1 0) surface using XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), LEED (low energy electron diffraction) and HREELS (high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy) to determine the origins of the unique adsorption properties of carboxylic acids on a TiO2(1 1 0) surface. The C 1s XPS data indicated that the saturation carbon amount of adsorbed acetic anhydride was 12 ± 3% larger than that of the adsorbed acetic acid. LEED showed p(2 × 1) weak spots for the acetic anhydride adsorbed surface. The HREELS spectra revealed the dissociative adsorption of acetic anhydride. Based on these findings, we concluded that the neutralization of the bridging oxygen atoms associated with the dissociative adsorption is necessary for the stable adsorption of carboxylates on the 5-fold Ti sites.  相似文献

The growth of thin subnanometric silicon films on TiO2 (1 1 0)-(1 × 2) reconstructed surfaces at room temperature (RT) has been studied in situ by X-ray and ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS and UPS), Auger electron and electron-energy-loss spectroscopies (AES and ELS), quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED-IV), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). For Si coverage up to one monolayer, a heterogeneous layer is formed. Its composition consists of a mixture of different suboxides SiOx (1 < x ? 2) on top of a further reduced TiO2 surface. Upon Si coverage, the characteristic (1 × 2) LEED pattern from the substrate is completely attenuated, indicating absence of long-range order. Annealing the SiOx overlayer results in the formation of suboxides with different stoichiometry. The LEED pattern recovers the characteristic TiO2 (1 1 0)-(1 × 2) diagram. LEED I-V curves from both, substrate and overlayer, indicate the formation of nanometric sized SiOx clusters.  相似文献

We have studied the growth of cerium films on Rh(1 1 1) using STM (scanning tunneling microscopy), LEED (low energy electron diffraction), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and AES (Auger electron spectroscopy). Measurements of the Ce films after room temperature deposition showed that Ce is initially forming nanoclusters in the low coverage regime. These clusters consist of 12 Ce atoms and have the shape of pinwheels. At a coverage of 0.25 ML (monolayer, ML) an adatom layer with a (2 × 2) superstructure is observed. Above 0.4 ML, Rh is diffusing through pinholes into the film, forming an unstructured mixed layer. Annealing at 250 °C leads to the formation of ordered Ce-Rh compounds based on the bulk compound CeRh3. At a coverage of 0.1 ML, small ordered (2 × 2) surface alloy domains are observed. The exchanged Rh atoms form additional alloy islands situated on the pure Rh(1 1 1) surface, showing the same (2 × 2) superstructure as the surface alloy. At a coverage of 0.25 ML, the surface is completely covered by the surface alloy and alloy islands. The (2 × 2) structure is equivalent to a (1 1 1)-plane of CeRh3, contracted by 6%. Annealing a 1 ML thick Ce layer leads to a flat surface consisting of different rotational domains of CeRh3(1 0 0). The Rh needed for alloy formation comes from 50 Å deep pits in the substrate. Finally we show that LEIS (low energy ion scattering) is not suitable for the characterization of Ce and CeRh films due to strong effects of neutralization.  相似文献

The reaction of formic acid on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The hydroxyl and carbonyl O 1s core levels of chemisorbed formic acid display chemical shifts of 2.4 and 0.2 eV respectively, compared with those of physisorbed molecules. The HREELS spectra of chemisorbed formic acid show the absence of stretching and bending modes of the O-H bond, the appearance of Si-H (2089 cm−1) and the Si-O (680 cm−1) stretching modes and the retained stretching mode of CO at 1703 cm−1. Our results clearly suggest that formic acid dissociates to form monodentate formate species and H-atom on the adatom-rest atom pair of Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7.  相似文献

We have studied the interface and thin film formation of the organic molecular semiconductor 3,4,9,10 perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) on clean and on hydrogen passivated Si(0 0 1) surfaces. The studies were made by means of high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS), near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). On the passivated surface the LEED pattern is somewhat diffuse but reveals that the molecules grow in several ordered domains with equivalent orientations to the substrate. NEXAFS shows that the molecules are lying flat on the substrate. The Si 2p XPS line shape is not affected when the film is deposited so it can be concluded that the interaction at the interface between PTCDA and the substrate is weak. The evolution of the film formation appears to be homogeneous for the first monolayer with a nearly complete coverage of flat lying molecules based on the XPS attenuation. For layer thickness of 0.5-2 monolayers (ML) the molecules start to form islands, attracting the molecules in between, leaving the substrate partly uncovered. For thicker films there is a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode with thick islands and a monolayer thick film in between. For the clean surface the ordering of the film is much lower and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) of the molecular orbitals have only a small dependence of the emission angle. NEXAFS shows that the molecules do not lie flat on the surface and also reveal a chemical interaction at the interface.  相似文献

The InSb(0 0 1) surfaces chemically treated in HCl-isopropanol solution and annealed in vacuum were studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The HCl-isopropanol treatment removes indium and antimony oxides and leaves on the surface about 3 ML of physisorbed overlayer, containing indium chlorides and small amounts of antimony, which can be thermally desorbed at 230 °C. The residual carbon contaminations were around 0.2-0.4 ML and consisted of the hydrocarbon molecules. These hydrocarbon contaminations were removed from the surface together with the indium chlorides and antimony overlayer. With increased annealing temperature, a sequence of reconstructions were identified by LEED: (1 × 1), (1 × 3), (4 × 3), and (4 × 1)/c(8 × 2), in the order of decreasing Sb/In ratio. The structural properties of chemically prepared InSb(0 0 1) surface were found to be similar to those obtained by decapping of Sb-capped epitaxial layers.  相似文献

The adsorption configurations of pyrimidine and triazine on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 were investigated using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The HREELS spectra of chemisorbed monolayer show the coexistence of the C(sp2)-H and C (sp3)-H stretching modes together with the observation of the unconjugated CN(C) vibrational feature suggesting that the carbon atom and its para-nitrogen atom of pyrimidine and triazine directly participate in binding with the surface to form Si-C and Si-N σ-linkages. The core levels of the C-atom and its opposite nitrogen atom directly binding with Si-atoms experience a down-shifting by 1.8-1.9 and 1.4-1.6 eV, respectively. These experimental findings are consistent with the density functional theory calculations indicating that the carbon atom and its para-nitrogen atom favorably link with the adjacent adatom and rest atom pair to form C-Si and N-Si linkages.  相似文献

In this paper, we present experimental results of target current (TCS) and LEED investigation of well-oriented InSb(1 1 0) and InSb(1 1 1)-A and InSb(1 1 1)-B crystals. TCS results are interpreted in terms of very low electron diffraction (VLEED) and empty band signatures. To examine to which extent the TCS spectra reflect the bulk or surface electronic properties of InSb(1 1 0), thin layers of indium have been evaporated and the corresponding spectrum changes have been investigated.  相似文献

The surface chemistry of NO and NO2 on clean and oxygen-precovered Pt(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surfaces were investigated by means of high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). At room temperature, NO molecularly adsorbs on Pt(1 1 0), forming linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a). Coverage-dependent repulsive interactions within NO(a) drive the reversible transformation between linear and bridged NO(a). Some NO(a) decomposes upon heating, producing both N2 and N2O. For NO adsorption on the oxygen-precovered surface, repulsive interactions exist between precovered oxygen adatoms and NO(a), resulting in more NO(a) desorbing from the surface in the form of linear NO(a). Bridged NO(a) experiences stronger repulsive interactions with precovered oxygen than linear NO(a). The desorption activation energy of bridged NO(a) from oxygen-precovered Pt(1 1 0) is lower than that from clean Pt(1 1 0), but the desorption activation energy of linear NO(a) is not affected by the precovered oxygen. NO2 decomposes on Pt(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface at room temperature. The resulted NO(a) (both linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a)) and O(a) repulsively interact each other. Comparing with NO/Pt(1 1 0), more NO(a) desorbs from NO2/Pt(1 1 0) as linear NO(a), and both linear NO(a) and bridged NO(a) exhibit lower desorption activation energies. The reaction pathways of NO(a) on Pt(1 1 0), desorption or decomposition, are affected by their repulsive interactions with coexisting oxygen adatoms.  相似文献

The interaction of vanadium oxide with epitaxial anatase films exposing (1 0 1) terraces was characterized. The TiO2 films were grown on vicinal LaAlO3 (1 1 0) substrates by oxygen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (OPA-MBE); reflection high energy and low energy electron diffraction (RHEED and LEED) indicated that the films exposed (1 0 1) terraces of the anatase TiO2 polymorph. When a vanadium oxide monolayer was deposited onto the anatase surface by OPA-MBE at 725 K, only (1 × 1) RHEED and LEED patterns were observed. The V X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) peak intensities indicated that the monolayer wetted the anatase surface and so the diffraction patterns were attributed to an epitaxial vanadia layer. Analysis of the vanadium oxide monolayer by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies revealed that the V was predominantly 5+. When the vanadia coverage was increased at 725 K, Auger electron spectra showed only very slow attenuation of the anatase Ti peaks while spots began to develop in RHEED patterns recorded along the LaAlO3 direction; both indicative of 3-D cluster formation. In the orthogonal direction, the RHEED patterns showed unusual diagonal streaks. Meanwhile, the (1 × 1) LEED pattern persisted even after 30 nm of vanadia was deposited. This was attributed to gaps between the 3-D clusters exposing the epitaxial monolayer. Core level XPS spectra of the 3-D clusters revealed a broad V 2p3/2 peak that was centered at the position expected for V4+ but could be deconvoluted into three peaks corresponding to V3+, V4+, and V5+. It is shown that crystallographic shear that accommodates such variations in the oxygen content of V oxides can lead to the diagonal streaks in RHEED patterns recorded along the LaAlO3 [0 0 1] direction even as the pattern in the orthogonal direction shows sharp transmission spots. The results show that vanadia growth on anatase (1 0 1) proceeds through the Stranski-Krastanov mode with a strong vanadia-titania interaction stabilizing a dispersed vanadia monolayer. The results are compared with previous data for vanadia growth on anatase (0 0 1) where smooth, epitaxial VO2 films grow ad infinitum.  相似文献

Vapour deposition of Ce onto a Rh(1 1 0) single crystal at room temperature is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The thicknesses of the deposited Ce layers are estimated to be between 2 and 9 Å. To study the changes in the Ce-Rh surface layer, the samples are annealed at temperatures between 500 and 1000 °C after Ce deposition. After heating, a c(2 × 2) LEED pattern appears for the sample with the thinnest deposited Ce layer (2.4 Å). For samples with thicker Ce-films, the LEED pattern co-exists of a c(2 × 2) structure and a more diffuse 6% contracted (2 × 1) structure. This appears at the same temperature as the Ce 3d and Rh 3d core levels exhibit sharp intensity changes and binding energy shifts. The intensity of the f0, f1 and f2 multiplets in the Ce 3d core level spectra change when the annealing temperature is increased. The relative intensity of the Ce 3d f0 and f2 features compared to the Ce 3d f1 features is largest after annealing to 500 °C. This is below the temperature at which the ordered surface alloy is formed. When the sample is heated above the formation temperature of the surface alloy, the relative intensity of the Ce 3d f0 and f2 features decrease.  相似文献

Clean and oxidized surfaces of CoAl(1 0 0) were investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). The regrowth or step flow of terraces was observed at 1150 K. The correlation between the growth of oxide and the step flow on the CoAl(1 0 0) surface is discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The adsorption of naphthalene, vacuum deposited on a Ag(1 0 0) surface, was comprehensively investigated by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), temperature-programmed thermal desorption (TPD) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and polarization-dependent near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy in the mono- and multilayer regime. A growth of long-range ordered monolayer at 140 K is observed with LEED. The polarization-dependent C 1s NEXAFS shows that the naphthalene molecules in the monolayer lie almost parallel to the Ag(1 0 0) surface. With increasing film thickness, the molecular orientation turns to upright position. Furthermore, NEXAFS measurements show that in the multilayer regime the molecular orientation depends on the substrate temperature during deposition.  相似文献

We studied the low temperature (T ? 130 K) growth of Ag on Si(0 0 1) and Si(1 1 1) flat surfaces prepared by Si homo epitaxy with the aim to achieve thin metallic films. The band structure and morphology of the Ag overlayers have been investigated by means of XPS, UPS, LEED, STM and STS. Surprisingly a (√3 × √3)R30° LEED structure for Ag films has been observed after deposition of 2-6 ML Ag onto a Si(1 1 1)(√3 × √3)R30°Ag surface at low temperatures. XPS investigations showed that these films are solid, and UPS measurements indicate that they are metallic. However, after closer STM studies we found that these films consists of sharp Ag islands and (√3 × √3)R30°Ag flat terraces in between. On Si(0 0 1) the low-temperature deposition yields an epitaxial growth of Ag on clean Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 with a twinned Ag(1 1 1) structure at coverage’s as low as 10 ML. Furthermore the conductivity of few monolayer Ag films on Si(1 0 0) surfaces has been studied as a function of temperature (40-300 K).  相似文献

The growth of epitaxial GaN films on (0 0 0 1)-sapphire has been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). In order to investigate the mechanism of the growth in detail, we have focused on the nitridation of pre-deposited Ga layers (droplets) using ion beam-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (IBA-MBE). Comparative analysis of XPS core-level spectra and LEED patterns reveals, that nitride films nucleate as epitaxial GaN islands. The wetting of the surface by GaN proceeds via reactive spreading of metallic Ga, supplied from the droplets. The discussed growth model confirms, that excess of metallic Ga is beneficial for GaN nucleation.  相似文献

The (1 1 1)A and (1 1 1)B surfaces of GaAs chemically treated in HCl-isopropanol solution (HCl-iPA) and annealed in vacuum were studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). To avoid uncontrolled contamination, chemical treatment and sample transfer into UHV were performed under pure nitrogen atmosphere. The HCl-iPA treatment removes gallium and arsenic oxides, with about 0.5-3 ML of elemental arsenic being left on the surface, depending on the crystallographic orientation. With the increase of the annealing temperature, a sequence of reconstructions were identified by LEED: (1 × 1) and (2 × 2) on the (1 1 1)A surface and (1 × 1), (2 × 2), (1 × 1), (3 × 3), (√19 × √19) on the (1 1 1)B surface. These sequences of reconstructions correspond to the decrease of surface As concentration. The structural properties of chemically prepared GaAs(1 1 1) surfaces were found to be similar to those obtained by decapping of As-capped epitaxial layers.  相似文献

The initial growth and alloy formation of ultrathin Co films deposited on 1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) were investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). A sequence of samples of dCo Co/1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) (dCo = 1, 2, and 3 ML) were prepared at room temperature, and then heated up to investigate the diffusion process. The Co and Ni atoms intermix at lower annealing temperature, and Co-Ni intermixing layer diffuses into the Pt substrate to form Ni-Co-Pt alloys at higher annealing temperature. The diffusion temperatures are Co coverage dependent. The evolution of UPS with annealing temperatures also shows the formation of surface alloys. Some interesting LEED patterns of 1 ML Co/1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) show the formation of ordered alloys at different annealing temperature ranges. Further studies in the Curie temperature and concentration analysis, show that the ordered alloys corresponding to different LEED patterns are NixCo1−xPt and NixCo1−xPt3. The relationship between the interface structure and magnetic properties was investigated.  相似文献

We have employed low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to follow the epitaxial growth of thin films of TiO2 on W(1 0 0). The films were grown both by metal vapour deposition of titanium onto the substrate in UHV with subsequent annealing in a low partial pressure of oxygen, and by metal vapour deposition in a low partial pressure of oxygen. LEED patterns showed the characteristic patterns of (1 1 0) oriented rutile. A systematic spot splitting was observed and attributed to a stepped surface. The calculated step height was found to be in good agreement with that expected for rutile TiO2(1 1 0), 3.3 Å. Titanium core level shifts were used to identify oxidation states as a function of film thickness allowing the interpretation in terms of a slightly sub-stoichiometric interface layer in contact with the substrate. In combination with the LEED patterns, the film structure is therefore determined to be (1 1 0) oriented rutile with a comparable level of stoichiometry to UHV prepared bulk crystals. The ordered step structure indicates considerable structural complexity of the surface.  相似文献
