The unsteady motions of an inviscid vortex under the influence of a cylinder pair in the presence of a low Mach number mean flow and the corresponding sound generation are examined in the present study. The two cylinders are in close proximity. A semi-analytical approach using the conformal mapping together with the potential theory is adopted. The results show that the vortex will interact intensively with the cylinders under the right combinations of mean flow direction and initial vortex position. Such interactions result in a high rate of change of vortex propagation velocity, strong fluctuating forces on cylinder and strong sound radiations. However, it is found that much stronger acoustic energy radiation will result when the vortex approaches the cylinder pair from the bottom than from the top, unless the mean flow is nearly perpendicular to the horizontal cylinder pair axis. Stronger sound radiation is also observed for the identical cylinder cases in general, except the flow direction is close to some critical values.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation is used to study the loading of a rigid, circular cylinder impacted by a 2D vortex. The vortex travels within a stream of fluid characterized by Reynolds number of 150. Vortex impact occurs at twenty-five different times within one vortex shedding cycle. Substantial variation is observed in the maximum values of the drag and lift force coefficients. This variation is due to interaction between the impinging vortex and those attached to the cylinder. As the radius of the impinging vortex is increased from one to three times the cylinder’s diameter, the variation in maximum force coefficients with time of impact decreases. The variation decreases because the larger vortex alters the flow field and vortex shedding cycle prior to impacting the cylinder. For structures impacted by a vortex similar in size, significant under-prediction of the maximum loading may occur if variation in loading with vortex impact time is not considered.  相似文献

The flow around a circular cylinder undergoing sinusoidal oscillating movement in still water is investigated by phase-locked PIV measurements. The pattern and development of large-scale vortex structures in the flow are studied from the velocity vectors and vorticity contours obtained at eight successive phases of an oscillating cycle. Experiments are performed at three Keulegan–Carpenter numbers; KC=12, 6.28 and 4.25. Results at KC=12 reveal the mechanism of vortex formation and the development of the shed vortices into a vortex street at a lateral direction to the line of cylinder movement. The role of a biased flow stream and the length of the cylinder stroke in the formation of the vortex street are discussed. At the lower KC numbers, a symmetric pair of vortices is found attached to the leeward face of the cylinder. The vortex pair exhibits an increasing degree of asymmetry when KC increases from 4.25 to 6.28. An explanation in terms of the length of the cylinder strokes and the degree of flow asymmetry is offered for the transition of flow regimes from a vortex pair to a vortex street. The present results are compared with the observations made in previous experimental and numerical studies in the literature.  相似文献

The turbulent flow around two cylinders in tandem at the sub-critical Reynolds number range of order of 105 and pitch to diameter ratio of 3.7 is investigated by using time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (TRPIV) of 1 kHz and 8 kHz. The bi-stable flow regimes including a flow pattern I with a strong vortex shedding past the upstream and the downstream cylinder, as well as a flow pattern II corresponding to a weak alternating vortex shedding with reattachment past the upstream cylinder are investigated. The structure of this “reattachment regime” has been analyzed in association with the vortex dynamics past the downstream cylinder, by means of POD and phase-average decomposition. These elements allowed interconnection among all the measured PIV planes and hence analysis of the reattachment structure and the flow dynamics past both cylinders. The results highlight fundamental differences of the flow structure and dynamics around each cylinder and provide the ‘gap’ flow nature between the cylinders. Thanks to a high-speed camera of 8 kHz, the shear-layer vortices tracking has been possible downstream of the separation point and the quantification of their shedding frequency at the present high Reynolds number range has been achieved. This issue is important regarding fluid instabilities involved in the fluid–structure interaction of cylinder arrays in nuclear reactor systems, as well as acoustic noise generated from the tandem cylinders of a landing gear in aeronautics.  相似文献

This paper investigates flow past a rotating circular cylinder at 3600?Re?5000 and α?2.5. The flow parameter α is the circumferential speed at the cylinder surface normalized by the free-stream velocity of the uniform cross-flow. With particle image velocimetry (PIV), vortex shedding from the cylinder is clearly observed at α<1.9. The vortex pattern is very similar to the vortex street behind a stationary circular cylinder; but with increasing cylinder rotation speed, the wake is observed to become increasing narrower and deflected sideways. Properties of large-scale vortices developed from the shear layers and shed into the wake are investigated with the vorticity field derived from the PIV data. The vortex formation length is found to decrease with increasing α. This leads to a slow increase in vortex shedding frequency with α. At α=0.65, vortex shedding is found to synchronize with cylinder rotation, with one vortex being shed every rotation cycle of the cylinder. Vortex dynamics are studied at this value of α with the phase-locked eduction technique. It is found that although the shear layers at two different sides of the cylinder possess unequal vorticity levels, alternating vortices subsequently shed from the cylinder to join the two trains of vortices in the vortex street pattern exhibit very little difference in vortex strength.  相似文献

This paper attempts to study the roles of lateral cylinder oscillations and a uniform cross-flow in the vortex formation and wake modes of an oscillating circular cylinder. A circular cylinder is given lateral oscillations of varying amplitudes (between 0.28 and 1.42 cylinder-diameters) in a slow uniform flow stream (Reynolds number=284) to produce the 2S, 2P and P+S wake modes. Detailed flow information is obtained with time-resolved particle-image velocimetry and the phase-locked averaging techniques. In the 2S and 2P mode, the flow speeds relative to the cylinder movement are less than the uniform flow velocity and it is found that initial formation of a vortex is caused by shear-layer separation of the uniform flow on the cylinder. Subsequent development of the shear-layer vortices is affected by the lateral cylinder movement. At small cylinder oscillation amplitudes, vortices are shed in synchronization with the cylinder movement, resulting in the 2S mode. The 2P mode occurs at larger cylinder oscillation amplitudes at which each shear-layer vortex is found to undergo intense stretching and eventual bifurcation into two separate vortices. The P+S mode occurs when the cylinder moving speeds are, for most of the time, higher than the speed of the uniform flow. These situations are found at fast and large-amplitude cylinder oscillations in which the flow relative to the cylinder movement takes over the uniform flow in governing the initial vortex formation. The formation stages of vortices from the cylinder are found to bear close resemblance to those of a vortex street pattern of a cylinder oscillating in an otherwise quiescent fluid at Keulegan–Carpenter numbers around 16. Vortices in the inclined vortex street pattern so formed are then convected downstream by the uniform flow as the vortex pairs in the 2P mode.  相似文献

The noise generated by two tandem cylinders in a cross-flow (i.e., with the second in the wake of the first) has been investigated. Measurements of turbulence and of fluctuating pressure have been obtained between the two cylinders for different flow velocities and incident levels of turbulence. Although, for a number of cases, up to four peaks related to vortex shedding were evident in the spectrum, most measurements exhibited two peaks, a dominant one at the vortex-shedding frequency, with a secondary peak at twice this value. The measurements show that vortex generated noise is strongest at the mid-point between the cylinders and at the rear cylinder with levels of 130 dB. The harmonic component was strongest at the downstream cylinder where peak values of 110 dB were obtained. The nonlinear flow/acoustic interactions are examined using bispectral analysis to identify the quadratic interactions in the parameters. A novel quadratic modelling method is proposed and shown to be capable of both identifying and quantifying the nonlinear interactions which give rise to noise at harmonics of the vortex-shedding frequency.  相似文献

This study explores the vortex patterns formed by a circular cylinder undergoing lateral cylinder oscillations with large amplitudes and in the presence of a slow uniform cross flow. It is an extension of our previous study (Lam et al., 2010b) in which formation of the 2S, 2P and P+S vortex modes were discussed from the viewpoint of interaction of a uniform cross-flow with the vortex street patterns of a cylinder oscillating in an otherwise quiescent fluid at Keulegan–Carpenter numbers up to KC=8.9. The present paper reports three additional experimental sets in which the amplitudes of cylinder oscillations have even larger values, at A/D>2.5, and lie beyond the vortex mode map usually quoted from Williamson and Roshko (1988). It is found that the slow uniform cross-flow at λ/D≈3 and Reynolds number based on cross-flow velocity at 232 acts to convect the corresponding vortex patterns in the absence of cross-flow downstream across the line of cylinder oscillation. Vortex–vortex interaction and vortex–cylinder interaction are observed to affect the subsequent development of vortices. The P+S vortex mode is found to occur up to KC=16. At KC between 16 and 24, a new vortex mode is observed in which only one vortex pair can be convected downstream every cylinder oscillation cycle. Another new vortex mode with two vortex pairs and two stationary vortices are found at KC>24.  相似文献

This paper describes flow around a pair of cylinders in tandem arrangement with a downstream cylinder being fixed or forced to oscillate transversely. A sinusoidal parietal velocity is applied to simulate cylinder oscillation. Time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite element method. It is shown that there exist two distinct flow regimes: ‘vortex suppression regime’ and ‘vortex formation regime’. Averaged vortex lengths between the two cylinders, pressure variations at back and front stagnant points as well as circumferential pressure profiles of the downstream cylinder are found completely different in the two regimes and, thus, can be used to identify the flow regimes. It is shown that frequency selection in the wake of the oscillating cylinder is a result of non-linear interaction among vortex wakes upstream and downstream of the second cylinder and its forced oscillation. Increasing cylinder spacing results in a stronger oscillatory incident flow upstream of the second cylinder and, thus, a smaller synchronization zone.  相似文献

A novel actuator signal achieved by changing the ratio of the suction duty cycle to the blowing duty cycle is adopted to enhance the control effect of the synthetic jet for the flow around a circular cylinder. The suction duty cycle factor k defined as the ratio between the time duration of the suction cycle and the blowing cycle and the equivalent momentum coefficient Cμ are introduced as the determining parameters. The synthetic jet is positioned at the rear stagnation point in order to introduce symmetric perturbations upon the flow field. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique is applied for the analysis of the spanwise vorticity field. Increasing the suction duty cycle factor, the momentum coefficient is enhanced, and thus a stronger and larger scale synthetic jet vortex pair with a higher convection velocity is generated. The synthetic jet vortex pair interacts with the spanwise vorticity shear layers behind both sides of the cylinder, resulting in the variations of the wake vortex shedding modes at Re=950: for k=0.25, Cμ=0.148, vortex synchronization at the subharmonic excitation frequency with antisymmetric shedding mode; for 0.50≤k≤1.00, 0.213≤Cμ≤0.378, vortex synchronization at the excitation frequency with the symmetric or antisymmetric shedding modes; for 2.00≤k≤4.00, 0.850≤Cμ≤2.362, vortex synchronization at the excitation frequency with symmetric shedding mode. Hence, the control effect of the synthetic jet upon the wake vortex of a circular cylinder can be enhanced by increasing the suction duty cycle factor so as to increase the momentum coefficient. This is also validated at a higher Reynolds number Re=1600.  相似文献

Flow around an oscillating cylinder in a subcritical region are numerically studied with a lattice Boltzmann method(LBM). The effects of the Reynolds number, oscillation amplitude and frequency on the vortex wake modes and hydrodynamics forces on the cylinder surface are systematically investigated. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of resonance induced by the cylinder oscillation. The results demonstrate that vortex shedding can be excited extensively under subcritical conditions, and the response region of vibration frequency broadens with increasing Reynolds number and oscillation amplitude. Two distinct types of vortex shedding regimes are observed. The first type of vortex shedding regime(VSR I) is excited at low frequencies close to the intrinsic frequency of flow, and the second type of vortex shedding regime(VSR II)occurs at high frequencies with the Reynolds number close to the critical value. In the VSR I, a pair of alternately rotating vortices are shed in the wake per oscillation cycle, and lock-in/synchronization occurs, while in the VSR II, two alternately rotating vortices are shed for several oscillation cycles, and the vortex shedding frequency is close to that of a stationary cylinder under the critical condition. The excitation mechanisms of the two types of vortex shedding modes are analyzed separately.

A numerical study on the flow past a square cylinder placed parallel to a wall, which is moving at the speed of the far field has been made. Flow has been investigated in the laminar Reynolds number (based on the cylinder length) range. We have studied the flow field for different values of the cylinder to wall separation length. The governing unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are discretized through the finite volume method on a staggered grid system. A SIMPLE type of algorithm has been used to compute the discretized equations iteratively. A shear layer of negative vortex generates along the surface of the wall, which influences the vortex shedding behind the cylinder. The flow‐field is distinct from the flow in presence of a stationary wall. An alternate vortex shedding occurs for all values of gap height in the unsteady regime of the flow. The strong positive vortex pushes the negative vortex upwards in the wake. The gap flow in the undersurface of the cylinder is strong and the velocity profile overshoots. The cylinder experiences a downward force for certain values of the Reynolds number and gap height. The drag and lift are higher at lower values of the Reynolds number. Vortex shedding from a fixed rigid square cylinder in a cross flow was manipulated by perturbing the cylinder surface using piezo-ceramic actuators, which were activated by a feedback hot-wire signal via a proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller. The manipulated flow was measured at a Reynolds number (Re) of 7,400 using particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) flow visualisation, two-component laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), hot wires and load cells. It is observed that the vortex circulation, fluctuating streamwise velocity, lift and drag coefficients and mean drag coefficient may decrease by 71%, 40%, 51%, 42% and 20%, respectively, compared with the unperturbed flow, if the perturbation velocity of the cylinder surface is anti-phased with the flow lateral velocity associated with vortex shedding. On the other hand, these quantities may increase by 152%, 90%, 60%, 67% and 37%, respectively, given in-phased cylinder surface perturbation and vortex shedding. Similar effects are obtained at Re=3,200 and 9,500, respectively. The relationship between the perturbation and flow modification is examined, which provides insight into the physics behind the observation.  相似文献

We present a curious situation of a fluid-flow wherein the body experiences non-fluctuating fluid-flow force despite being associated with an unsteady flow comprising of sustained vortex shedding. The flow past a circular cylinder at Re=100 is investigated. It is shown that the spatio-temporal periodicity of the oblique vortex shedding results in constant-in-time force experienced by a cylinder placed in uniform flow. On the contrary, parallel vortex shedding leads to fluid force that fluctuates with time. It is found that, both, the parallel and oblique shedding are linearly unstable eigenmodes of the Re=100 steady flow past a cylinder.  相似文献

Viscoelastic flow around a confined cylinder at high Deborah numbers is studied using microfluidic channels. By varying fluid properties and flow rates, a systematic study of the roles of elasticity and inertia is accomplished. Two new elastic flow instabilities that occur at high Deborah numbers are identified. A downstream instability of disordered and temporally varying streamlines is observed at a Deborah number above 10. This instability is a precursor to an unsteady vortex that develops upstream of the cylinder at higher Deborah numbers. Both instabilities occur at moderate Reynolds numbers but are fundamentally elastic. The size and steadiness of the upstream vortex are primarily controlled by the Deborah and the elasticity number.  相似文献

We present a finite element (FE) formulation of Lighthill's acoustic analogy for the hybrid computation of noise generated by turbulent flows. In the present approach, the flow field is computed using large eddy simulation and scale adaptive simulation turbulence models. The acoustic propagation is obtained by solving the variational formulation of Lighthill's acoustic analogy with the FE method. In order to preserve the acoustic energy, we compute the inhomogeneous part of Lighthill's wave equation by applying the FE formulation on the fine flow grid. The resulting acoustic nodal loads are then conservatively interpolated to the coarser acoustic grid. Subsequently, the radiated acoustic field can be solved in both time and frequency domains. In the latter case, an enhanced perfectly matched layer technique is employed, allowing one to truncate the computational domain in the acoustic near field, without compromising the numerical solution. Our hybrid approach is validated by comparing the numerical results of the acoustic field induced by a corotating vortex pair with the corresponding analytical solution. To demonstrate the applicability of our scheme, we present full 3D numerical results for the computed acoustic field generated by the turbulent flow around square cylinder geometries. The sound pressure levels obtained compare well with measured values. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical study is performed of flow behind a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder in a uniform flow by solving the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The flow behavior in lock-on regime and the timing of vortex formation from the oscillating cylinder are studied. When the frequency of excitation of the cylinder is in the vicinity of the natural vortex formation frequency, a lock-on vortex formation regime appears. As the excitation frequency being increased relative to the natural frequency the initially formed vorticity concentration switches to the opposite side of the cylinder. The effects of oscillating frequency and amplitude on the vortex structures formed in the near wake of the cylinder are also investigated. Based on the present calculated results, some complicated vortex patterns are identified and are consistent with the previous experimental visualizations.  相似文献

The present paper describes a new active method for controlling vortex shedding from a circular cylinder in a uniform flow at medium Reynolds numbers. It uses rotary cylinder oscillations controlled by the feedback signal of a reference velocity in the cylinder wake. The effectiveness of this feedback control is evaluated by measuring the response of mean and fluctuating velocities in the cylinder wake, the spanwise correlation, the power spectrum, and the fluid forces acting on the cylinder. It is found that the velocity fluctuations and the fluid forces are both reduced by the feedback control with optimum values of the phase lag and feedback gain. The simultaneous flow visualization synchronized with the cylinder oscillation indicates the attenuation as well as the mechanisms of vortex shedding under the feedback control, which is due to the dynamic effect of cylinder oscillation on the vortex formation.  相似文献
