Employing first-principles methods, based on density functional theory, we report the ground state geometric and electronic structures of gold clusters doped with platinum group atoms, Au(N)M (N = 1-7, M = Ni, Pd, Pt). The stability and electronic properties of Ni-doped gold clusters are similar to that of pure gold clusters with an enhancement of bond strength. Due to the strong d-d or s-d interplay between impurities and gold atoms originating in the relativistic effects and unique properties of dopant delocalized s-electrons in Pd- and Pt-doped gold clusters, the dopant atoms markedly change the geometric and electronic properties of gold clusters, and stronger bond energies are found in Pt-doped clusters. The Mulliken populations analysis of impurities and detailed decompositions of bond energies as well as a variety of density of states of the most stable dopant gold clusters are given to understand the different effects of individual dopant atom on bonding and electronic properties of dopant gold clusters. From the electronic properties of dopant gold clusters, the different chemical reactivity toward O(2), CO, or NO molecule is predicted in transition metal-doped gold clusters compared to pure gold clusters.  相似文献

Systematic investigations on lowest energy CO adsorbed neutral and ionic Rhn (n = 2–8) clusters in the gas phase are performed with all electron relativistic method using density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. Geometrical and electronic parameters are evaluated to understand the bonding nature as well as the binding interaction of CO on stable neutral and ionic rhodium clusters. Anionic adducts exhibit higher adsorption energy along with smaller Rh–C and larger C–O bond distances in comparison to neutral and cationic RhnCO (n = 2–8) clusters. Synergic bond formation is noticed between rhodium and carbon atom of CO molecule due to back-donation of electron from metal d-orbitals to π* orbital of CO in the case of anionic and some neutral clusters. Angular and Mülliken charge analysis along with electron density distribution suggest that anionic rhodium clusters form strong bond with carbon atom of CO than the neutral and cationic clusters.  相似文献

We have measured the photoelectron spectra of the multiple-decker 1:1 sandwich clusters of Eu(n)(COT)n- (n = 1-4; COT = 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene), synthesized in the gas phase, and studied theoretically the bonding scheme, charge distribution, valence orbital energies, and photodetachment energies. We calculated the ground electronic state X- and the first excited electronic state A-, both of which have strong ionic bonding and a characteristic charge distribution. Moreover, we found that the valence orbital energies of Eu (6s) and COT (L delta) depend strongly on cluster size and their positions in the clusters. With the calculated vertical detachment energies for these valence orbitals, we assigned the peaks in the experimental photoelectron spectra and analyzed the origin of their interesting behavior by employing simple point charge models. From these analyses, it became clear that the characteristic behavior of the spectra is due to the strong ionic bonding and the charge distribution. In addition, using the point charge models, we estimated the vertical detachment energies of the one-dimensional polymer [Eu(COT)]infinity-.  相似文献

We investigate the interaction between water molecules and gold nanoclusters Au(n) through a systematic density functional theory study within both the generalized gradient approximation and the nonlocal van der Waals (vdW) density functional theory. Both planar (n = 6-12) and three-dimensional (3D) clusters (n = 17-20) are studied. We find that applying vdW density functional theory leads to an increase in the Au-Au bond length and a decrease in the cohesive energy for all clusters studied. We classify water adsorption on nanoclusters according to the corner, edge, and surface adsorption geometries. In both corner and edge adsorptions, water molecule approaches the cluster through the O atom. For planar clusters, surface adsorption occurs in a O-up/H-down geometry with water plane oriented nearly perpendicular to the cluster. For 3D clusters, water instead favors a near-flat surface adsorption geometry with the water O atom sitting nearly atop a surface Au atom, in agreement with previous study on bulk surfaces. Including vdW interaction increases the adsorption energy for the weak surface adsorption but reduces the adsorption energy for the strong corner adsorption due to increased water-cluster bond length. By analyzing the adsorption induced charge rearrangement through Bader's charge partitioning and electron density difference and the orbital interaction through the projected density of states, we conclude that the bonding between water and gold nanocluster is determined by an interplay between electrostatic interaction and covalent interaction involving both the water lone-pair and in-plane orbitals and the gold 5d and 6s orbitals. Including vdW interaction does not change qualitatively the physical picture but does change quantitatively the adsorption structure due to the fluxionality of gold nanoclusters.  相似文献

We report an extensive first-principles study of the structure and electronic properties of Ag(n) (n = 1-8) clusters isolated in gas phase and deposited on the α-Al(2)O(3) surface. We have used the plane wave based pseudopotential method within the framework of density functional theory. The electron ion interaction has been described using projector augmented wave (PAW), and the spin-polarized GGA scheme was used for the exchange correlation energy. The results reveal that, albeit interacting with support alumina, the Ag atoms prefers to remain bonded together suggesting an island growth motif is preferred over wetting the surface. When compared the equilibrium structures of Ag clusters between free and on alumina substrate, a significant difference was observed starting from n = 7 onward. While Ag(7) forms a three-dimensional (3D) pentagonal bipyramid in the isolated gas phase, on alumina support it forms a planar hexagonal structure parallel to the surface plane. Moreover, the spin moment of the Ag(7) cluster was found to be fully quenched. This has been attributed to higher delocalization of electron density as the size of the cluster increases. Furthermore, a comparison of chemical bonding analysis through electronic density of state (EDOS) shows that the EDOS of the deposited Ag(n) cluster is significantly broader, which has been ascribed to the enhanced spd hybridization. On the basis of the energetics, it is found that the adsorption energy of Ag clusters on the α-Al(2)O(3) surface decreases with cluster size.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on stoichiometric, high-symmetry clusters have been performed to model the (100) and (111) surface electronic structure and bonding properties of titanium carbide (TiC), vanadium carbide (VC), and titanium nitride (TiN). The interactions of ideal surface sites on these clusters with three adsorbates, carbon monoxide, ammonia, and the oxygen atom, have been pursued theoretically to compare with experimental studies. New experimental results using valence band photoemission of the interaction of O(2) with TiC and VC are presented, and comparisons to previously published experimental studies of CO and NH(3) chemistry are provided. In general, we find that the electronic structure of the bare clusters is entirely consistent with published valence band photoemission work and with straightforward molecular orbital theory. Specifically, V(9)C(9) and Ti(9)N(9) clusters used to model the nonpolar (100) surface possess nine electrons in virtually pure metal 3d orbitals, while Ti(9)C(9) has no occupation of similar orbitals. The covalent mixing of the valence bonding levels for both VC and TiC is very high, containing virtually 50% carbon and 50% metal character. As expected, the predicted mixing for the Ti(9)N(9) cluster is somewhat less. The Ti(8)C(8) and Ti(13)C(13) clusters used to model the TiC(111) surface accurately predict the presence of Ti 3d-based surface states in the region of the highest occupied levels. The bonding of the adsorbate species depends critically on the unique electronic structure features present in the three different materials. CO bonds more strongly with the V(9)C(9) and Ti(9)N(9) clusters than with Ti(9)C(9) as the added metal electron density enables an important pi-back-bonding interaction, as has been observed experimentally. NH(3) bonding with Ti(9)N(9) is predicted to be somewhat enhanced relative to VC and TiC due to greater Coulombic interactions on the nitride. Finally, the interaction with oxygen is predicted to be stronger with the carbon atom of Ti(9)C(9) and with the metal atom for both V(9)C(9) and Ti(9)N(9). In sum, these results are consistent with labeling TiC(100) as effectively having a d(0) electron configuration, while VC- and TiN(100) can be considered to be d(1) species to explain surface chemical properties.  相似文献

The structure, stability, and O2 adsorption properties of anionic Au(n) (n=1-11) clusters either free or supported at defected MgO100 surfaces are investigated using density-functional theory. O2 adsorption is strong whenever unpaired electrons are present, except for at some small, supported, planar, high-band-gap clusters. These clusters have the unpaired electrons pinned by the Madelung potential of the support. Larger clusters (starting at Au7-Au8) become three dimensional and metallic. This ensures that while one cluster orbital is pinned to the defect, another orbital at comparable energy can undergo depletion, thus binding O2 with charge transfer.  相似文献

Based on density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation calculations, the adsorption of Co2B2 and Ni2B2 clusters on the rutile TiO2 (110) surface has been investigated utilizing periodic supercell models. Unambiguously, the results demonstrate that the hollow site turns out to be preferable for Co2B2 cluster while Ti2 site is for Ni2B2 cluster to adsorb. Orbital population analysis indicates a strong interaction between Co2B2 and O atom of TiO2 surface, which can be attributed to the overlap of Co 3d and surface O 2p orbital. Similarly, for Ni2B2 , the bonding interaction occurs mostly through the interaction of Ni 3d/4s and O 2p orbitals. Note that, there is also an interaction within the Co2B2 clusters (Ni2B2) through B 2s/2p and Co 3d orbitals (Ni 3d/4s). Moreover, orbital analysis results shows that the strong bonding between Ni2B2 and Ti2 site is due to the overlap of HOMO of Ni2B2 and d-orbital of five-coordinated titanium atoms.  相似文献

Neutral Mg(m)C(n)H(x) and Be(m)C(n)H(x) clusters are investigated both experimentally and theoretically for the first time. Single photon ionization at 193 nm is used to detect neutral cluster distributions through time of flight mass spectrometry. Mg(m)C(n)H(x) and Be(m)C(n)H(x) clusters are generated through laser ablation of Mg or Be foil into CH(4)/He expansion gas. A number of members of each cluster series are identified through isotopic substitution experiments employing (13)CH(4) and CD(4) instead of CH(4) in the expansion gas. An oscillation of the vertical ionization energies (VIEs) of Mg(m)C(n)H(x) clusters is observed in the experiments. The VIEs of Mg(m)C(n)H(x) clusters are observed to vary as a function of the number of H atoms in the clusters. Density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio (MP2) calculations are carried out to explore the structures and ionization energies of Mg(m)C(n)H(x) clusters. Many Be(m)C(n)H(x) clusters are also generated and detected in the experiments. The structures and VIEs of Be(m)C(n)H(x) clusters are also studied by theoretical calculations. Calculational results provide a good and consistent explanation for the experimental observations, and are in general agreement with them for both series of clusters.  相似文献

A systematic study on the structure and stability of nitrate anion hydrated clusters, NO3(-) x n H2O (n = 1-8) are carried out by applying first principle electronic structure methods. Several possible initial structures are considered for each size cluster to locate equilibrium geometry by applying a correlated hybrid density functional with 6-311++G(d,p) basis function. Three different types of arrangements, namely, symmetrical double hydrogen bonding, single hydrogen bonding and inter-water hydrogen bonding are obtained in these hydrated clusters. A structure having inter-water hydrogen bonding is more stable compared to other arrangements. Surface structures are predicted to be more stable over interior structures. Up to five solvent H2O molecules can stay around solute NO3(-) anion in structures having an inter-water hydrogen-bonded cyclic network. A linear correlation is obtained for weighted average solvent stabilization energy with the size (n) of the hydrated cluster. Distinctly different shifts of IR bands are observed in these hydrated clusters for different kinds of bonding environments of O-H and N=O stretching modes compared to isolated H2O and NO3(-) anion. Weighted average IR spectra are calculated on the basis of statistical population of individual configurations of each size cluster at 150 K.

Well controlled gas phase experiments of the size and dopant dependent reactivity of gold clusters can shed light on the surprising discovery that nanometer sized gold particles are catalytically active. Most studies that investigate the reactivity of gold clusters in the gas phase focused on charged, small sized clusters. Here, reactivity measurements in a low-pressure reaction cell were performed to investigate carbon monoxide adsorption on neutral bare and silver doped gold clusters (Au(n)Ag(m); n = 10-45; m = 0, 1, 2) at 140 K. The size dependence of the reaction probabilities reflects the role of the electronic shells for the carbon monoxide adsorption, with closed electronic shell systems being the most reactive. In addition, the cluster's reaction probability is reduced upon substitution of gold atoms for silver. Inclusion of a single silver atom causes significant changes in the reactivity only for a few cluster sizes, whereas there is a more general reduction in the reactivity with two silver atoms in the cluster. The experimental observations are qualitatively explained on the basis of a Blyholder model, which includes dopant induced features such as electron transfer from silver to gold, reduced s-d hybrization, and changes in the cluster geometry.  相似文献

High-resolution electron spectroscopy is used to explore the role played by molecular symmetry in determining the morphology of the energy spectra of electrons ejected when N2 and O2 are irradiated by intense laser fields. In O2, the low-energy part of the electron spectrum is curtailed due to the destructive interference brought about by the antibonding nature of the O2 valence orbital. The high-energy tail of the spectrum is also suppressed by virtue of electron rescattering being of little consequence in O2. In contrast, in N2, which has a bonding valence orbital, the electron dynamics follow the pattern that has been established for atomic ionization in strong optical fields.  相似文献

Poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) (PVP) has been used extensively to stabilize the surface of noble metal nanoparticles against aggregation and also to produce anisotropic nanostructures. Naturally, it is very important to understand the effect of such surface stabilization by PVP on the catalytic activity of these nanoparticles. This communication investigates through DFT calculations the electronic properties of PVP stabilized 13‐atom Ag cluster for catalytic activation of nitrobenzene (NB). These computations suggest that poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) (PVP) interact with silver (Ag) cluster mainly through oxygen atom and acts not only as a stabilizer to prevent the aggregation of Ag clusters but also as an electron donor to activate the Ag clusters for further reaction. Natural Bonding Orbital (NBO) calculations show that catalytic activation of NB by PVP passivated Ag cluster occurs due to interaction of the oxygen of the nitro group with the Ag cluster. Weak back donation of electrons from M(dπ) orbital of Ag to antibonding σ* of one of the N O bond, facilitates the formation of the nitroso intermediate. To understand the extent and the nature of this interaction better, vibrational frequency calculation of nitrobenzene association with Ag13‐2PVP cluster is carried out. Red shift in the frequencies is consequence of strong interaction with that of silver cluster present in Ag13‐2PVP‐NB model.  相似文献

First-principle density functional theory is used for studying the anion gold clusters doped with magnesium atom. By performing geometry optimizations, the equilibrium geometries, relative stabilities, and electronic and magnetic properties of [Au(n)Mg]? (n = 1-8) clusters have been investigated systematically in comparison with pure gold clusters. The results show that doping with a single Mg atom dramatically affects the geometries of the ground-state Au(n+1)? clusters for n = 2-7. Here, the relative stabilities are investigated in terms of the calculated fragmentation energies, second-order difference of energies, and highest occupied?lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gaps, manifesting that the ground-state [Au(n)Mg]? and Au(n+1)? clusters with odd-number gold atoms have a higher relative stability. In particular, it should be noted that the [Au?Mg]? cluster has the most enhanced chemical stability. The natural population analysis reveals that the charges in [Au(n)Mg]? (n = 2-8) clusters transfer from the Mg atom to the Au frames. In addition, the total magnetic moments of [Au(n)Mg]? clusters exhibit an odd-even oscillation as a function of cluster size, and the magnetic effects mainly come from the Au atoms.  相似文献

Bond dissociation energies (BDEs) of all possible A-X single bonds involving the first- and second-row atoms, from Li to Cl, where the free valences are saturated by hydrogens, have been estimated through the use of the G3-theory and at the B3LYP/6-311+G(3df,2pd)//B3LYP/6-31G(2df,p) DFT level of theory. BDEs exhibit a periodical behavior. The A-X (A = Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, and Si) BDEs show a steady increase along the first and the second row of the periodic table as a function of the atomic number Z(X). For A-X bonds involving electronegative atoms (A = C, N, O, F, P, S, and Cl) the bond energies achieve a maximum around Z(X) = 5. The same behavior is observed when BDEs are plotted against the electronegativity chi(X) of the atom X. Thus, for A-X bonds (A = Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, Si), the BDEs for a fixed A increases, grosso modo, as the electronegativity differences between X and A increase, with some exceptions, which reflect the differences in the relaxation energies of the radicals produced upon the bond cleavage. A similar trend, albeit less pronounced, is found for single A-X bonds, where A = C, N, O, F, P, S, and Cl. However, there is an additional feature embodied in the enhancement of the strength of the A-boron bonds due to the ability of boron to act as a strong electron acceptor. The trends in bond lengths and charge densities at the bond critical points are in line with the aforementioned behavior.  相似文献

An electronic structure analysis is provided of the action of solvated FeO(2+), [FeO(H(2)O)(5)](2+), as a hydroxylation catalyst. It is emphasized that the oxo end of FeO(2+) does not form hydrogen bonds (as electron donor and H-bond acceptor) with H-bond donors nor with aliphatic C-H bonds, but it activates C-H bonds as an electron acceptor. It is extremely electrophilic, to the extent that it can activate even such poor electron donors as aliphatic C-H bonds, the C-H bond orbital acting as electron donor in a charge transfer type of interaction. Lower lying O-H bonding orbitals are less easily activated. The primary electron accepting orbital in a water environment is the 3sigma*alpha orbital, an antibonding combination of Fe-3d(z(2)) and O-2p(z), which is very low-lying relative to the pi*alpha compared with, for example, the sigma* orbital in O(2) relative to its pi*. This is ascribed to relatively small Fe-3d(z(2)) with O-2p(z) overlap, due to the nodal structure of the 3d(z(2)).The H-abstraction barrier is very low in the gas phase, but it is considerably enhanced in water solvent. This is shown to be due to strong screening effects of the dielectric medium, leading to relative destabilization of the levels of the charged [FeO(H(2)O)(5)](2+) species compared to those of the neutral substrate molecules, making it a less effective electron acceptor. The solvent directly affects the orbital interactions responsible for the catalytic reaction.  相似文献

The dopant and size-dependent propene adsorption on neutral gold (Aun) and yttrium-doped gold (Aun−1Y) clusters in the n=5–15 size range are investigated, combining mass spectrometry and gas phase reactions in a low-pressure collision cell and density functional theory calculations. The adsorption energies, extracted from the experimental data using an RRKM analysis, show a similar size dependence as the quantum chemical results and are in the range of ≈0.6–1.2 eV. Yttrium doping significantly alters the propene adsorption energies for n=5, 12 and 13. Chemical bonding and energy decomposition analysis showed that there is no covalent bond between the cluster and propene, and that charge transfer and other non-covalent interactions are dominant. The natural charges, Wiberg bond indices, and the importance of charge transfer all support an electron donation/back-donation mechanism for the adsorption. Yttrium plays a significant role not only in the propene binding energy, but also in the chemical bonding in the cluster-propene adduct. Propene preferentially binds to yttrium in small clusters (n<10), and to a gold atom at larger sizes. Besides charge transfer, relaxation also plays an important role, illustrating the non-local effect of the yttrium dopant. It is shown that the frontier molecular orbitals of the clusters determine the chemical bonding, in line with the molecular-like electronic structure of metal clusters.  相似文献
