This paper deals with the sustainable effectiveness of professional development programmes. Based on a review of literature and research findings, the following questions are raised: What is regarded as an effective way of promoting mathematics teachers’ sustainable professional development? Which levels of impacts are aimed at? What are the factors promoting the effectiveness of professional development programmes? Regarding these questions, the article links theoretical considerations with research findings from a case study. A secondary mathematics teacher, taking part in a teacher professional development programme in 2002, was revisited in 2005 and 2010 to gather data regarding the sustainable impact of the programme. The case study’s results provide information about the teacher’s professional growth and lead to a discussion of implications for mathematics teachers’ professional development and teacher education in general.  相似文献

The study reported in this paper investigated perceptions concerning connections between mathematics and science held by university/college instructors who participated in the Maryland Collaborative for Teacher Preparation (MCTP), an NSF-funded program aimed at developing special middle-level mathematics and science teachers. Specifically, we asked (a) “What are the perceptions of MCTP instructors about the ‘other’ discipline?” (b) “What are the perceptions of MCTP instructors about the connections between mathematics and science?” and (c) “What are some barriers perceived by MCTP instructors in implementing mathematics and science courses that emphasize connections?” The findings suggest that the benefits of emphasizing mathematics and science connections perceived by MCTP instructors were similar to the benefits reported by school teachers. The barriers reported were also similar. The participation in the project appeared to have encouraged MCTP instructors to grapple with some fundamental questions, like “What should be the nature of mathematics and science connections?” and “What is the nature of mathematics/science in relationship to the other discipline?”  相似文献

A fundamental question in mathematical logic asks: What are the minimal assumptions and deduction principles required to prove a particular theorem? Now consider the special case of a theorem that can be established by checking a finite number of decidable cases — think of a single instance of the finite Ramsey theorem. In this particular situation the answer to our question is trivial: The theorem can be demonstrated by an explicit verification, thus without the use of any “strong” proof principles. This answer, however, is not very satisfying: An explicit verification may be unfeasible if there is an enormous number of cases to check. At the same time there might be a short and meaningful proof using stronger proof methods. Such a situation suggests a modified question: What are the minimal assumptions and deduction principles required for a reasonably short proof of the given theorem? It is appropriate to use Dempster's rule for combining belief functions only if the belief functions combined are based on independent items of evidence. In the XIXth century there was a persistent opposition to Aristotelian logic. Nicolai A. Vasiliev (1880–1940) noted this opposition and stressed that the way for the novel – non-Aristotelian – logic was already paved. He made an attempt to construct non-Aristotelian logic (1910) within, so to speak, the form (but not in the spirit) of the Aristotelian paradigm (mode of reasoning). What reasons forced him to reassess the status of particular propositions and to replace the square of opposition by the triangle of opposition? What arguments did Vasiliev use for the introduction of new classes of propositions and statement of existence of various levels in logic? What was the meaning and role of the “method of Lobachevsky” which was implemented in construction of imaginary logic? Why did psychologism in the case of Vasiliev happen to be an important factor in the composition of the new ‘imaginary’ logic, as he called it?   相似文献

What is the optimal shape of a dendrite? Of course, optimality refers to some particular criterion. In this paper, we look at the case of a dendrite sealed at one end and connected at the other end to a soma. The electrical potential in the fiber follows the classical cable equations as established by W. Rall. We are interested in the shape of the dendrite which minimizes either the attenuation in time of the potential or the attenuation in space. In both cases, we prove that the cylindrical shape is optimal.  相似文献

 This paper is a sequel to [11]. We study a number of questions only touched upon in [11] in more detail. In particular: What is the relation between two birational compact hyperk?hler manifolds? What is the shape of the cone of all K?hler classes on such a manifold? How can the birational K?hler cone be described? Most of the results are motivated by either the well-established two-dimensional theory, i.e. the theory of K3 surfaces, or the theory of Calabi-Yau threefolds and string theory. We continue the study of a “compound model of a generalized oscillator” and related elementary 3-symmetric Chebyshev polynomials. For these polynomials, we obtain second-order differential equations which are of Fuchs type and have 13 singular points. In the considered simplest case, the obtained results give us an answer to a more general question: What changes in the differential equations for polynomials of the Askey–Wilson scheme when the Jacobi matrix related to these polynomials is perturbed by a diagonal matrix with a complex diagonal? This paper describes the development of mathematical modelling as an element in school mathematics curricula and assessments. After an account of what has been achieved over the last forty years, illustrated by the experiences of two mathematician-modellers who were involved, I discuss the implications for the future—for what remains to be done to enable modelling to make its essential contribution to the «functional mathematics», the mathematical literacy, of future citizens and professionals. What changes in curriculum are likely to be needed? What do we know about achieving these changes, and what more do we need to know? What resources will be needed? How far have they already been developed? How can mathematics teachers be enabled to handle this challenge which, scandalously, is new to most of them? These are the overall questions addressed. The lessons from past experience on the challenges of large-scale of implementation of profound changes, such as teaching modelling in school mathematics, are discussed. Though there are major obstacles still to overcome, the situation is encouraging.  相似文献

A longstanding question in the dual Brunn–Minkowski theory is “What are the dual analogues of Federer’s curvature measures for convex bodies?” The answer to this is provided. This leads naturally to dual versions of Minkowski-type problems: What are necessary and sufficient conditions for a Borel measure to be a dual curvature measure of a convex body? Sufficient conditions, involving measure concentration, are established for the existence of solutions to these problems.  相似文献

In the 80’s D. Eisenbud and J. Harris considered the following problem: “What are the limits of Weierstrass points in families of curves degenerating to stable curves?” But for the case of stable curves of compact type, treated by them, this problem remained wide open since then. In the present article, we propose a concrete approach to this problem, and give a quite explicit solution for stable curves with just two irreducible components meeting at points in general position. We use the concept of pointed pseudo-triangulations to establish new upper and lower bounds on a well known problem from the area of art galleries: What is the worst case optimal number of vertex π-guards that collectively monitor a simple polygon with n vertices? Our results are as follows: (1) Any simple polygon with n vertices can be monitored by at most \lfloor n/2 \rfloor general vertex π-guards. This bound is tight up to an additive constant of 1. (2) Any simple polygon with n vertices, k of which are convex, can be monitored by at most \lfloor (2n – k)/3 \rfloor edge-aligned vertexπ-guards. This is the first non-trivial upper bound for this problem and it is tight for the worst case families of polygons known so far.  相似文献

This paper considers the work carried out by online teacher educators and their professional development. We use the theoretical perspective of the documentational approach that focuses, in this case, on the interaction between teacher educators and the resources they use for their online training work. We thus study the following issues: (1) What kinds of resources do online teacher educators need, and how are such resources modified according to the educators?? specific skills and needs? (2) What specific skills are needed for setting up online training for mathematics teachers and how do these skills evolve as teacher education resources are used? We consider both questions simultaneously, while presenting results from a study within a specific teacher training programme in France that proposes ??training paths?? on a national platform. These ??paths?? are resources designed for teacher educators. We follow the appropriation of two training paths by two educator teams. The ways in which these educator teams were able to appropriate the paths give insights into the teacher educators?? skills and, as well, into the resources they need. By looking at their use of resources (as online mathematics teacher educators), we observe and analyse professional geneses, leading to the development of new skills.  相似文献

Parametric models for tail copulas are being used for modeling tail dependence and maximum likelihood estimation is employed to estimate unknown parameters. However, two important questions seem unanswered in the literature: (1) What is the asymptotic distribution of the MLE and (2) how does one test the parametric model? In this paper, we answer these two questions in the case of a single parameter for ease of illustration. A simulation study is provided to investigate the finite sample performance of the proposed estimator and test.  相似文献

Many location problems can be expressed as ordered median objective. In this paper, we investigate the ordered median objective when the demand points are generated in a circle. We find the mean and variance of the kth distance from the centre of the circle and the correlation matrix between all pairs of ordered distances. By applying these values, we calculate the mean and variance of any ordered median objective and the correlation coefficient between two ordered median objectives. The usefulness of the results is demonstrated by calculating various probabilities such as: What is the probability that the mean distance is greater than the truncated mean distance? What is the probability that the maximum distance is greater than 0.9? What is the probability that the range of distances is greater than 0.8? An analysis of an illustrative example also demonstrates the usefulness of the analysis.  相似文献
