Organic-inorganic composite membranes from partially aliphatic sulfonated polyimides and heteropolyacids (HPAs) were synthesized. A series of composite membranes with varying amounts of heteropolyacid were prepared by altering the weight ratio of polyimide and HPA. The partially aliphatic sulfonated polyimides are synthesized from 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′-diaminobiphenyl 2,2′-disulfonic acid as the sulfonated diamine, and decamethylenediamine as the aliphatic diamine. The incorporation of HPA is confirmed by FT-IR analyses. When appropriately embedded in a hydrophilic polymer matrix, the hydrated HPAs are expected to endow the composite membrane with their high proton conductivity, while retaining the desirable mechanical properties of the polymer film. These composite membranes were evaluated for thermal stability, ion exchange capacity, water uptake and proton conductivity. Also the extraction of HPA from the polyimide membranes and their stability in water were determined. Though water uptake and IEC decreased with increase in HPA content, the proton conductivity of the composite membranes increased with increase in HPA weight content. This study shows that partially aliphatic sulfonated polyimide composite membranes with HPA can be a viable substitute for Nafion® for fuel cells which show good conductivity comparable to Nafion®117 at temperatures nearing 100 °C, keeping in mind that polyimides have good thermal stability and low cost.  相似文献

New hydrophobic protic ionic liquid, 2-butylaminoimidazolinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BAIM-TFSI), has been synthesized. The ionic liquid showed good thermal stability to at least 350 °C. The conductivity of BAIM-TFSI determined by electrochemical impedance method was found to be 5.6 × 10?2 S/cm at 140 °C. Homogeneous composite films based on commercial polyimide (PI) Matrimid and BAIM-TFSI containing 30–60 wt% of ionic liquid were prepared by casting from methylene chloride solutions. Thermogravimetric analysis data indicated an excellent thermal stability of PI/BAIM-TFSI composites and thermal degradation points in the temperature range 377 °C–397 °C. The addition of ionic liquid up to 50 wt% in PI films does not lead to any significant deterioration of the tensile strength of the polymer. The dynamic mechanical analysis results indicated both an increase of storage modulus E′ of PI/BAIM-TFSI composites at room temperature and a significant E′ decrease with temperature compared with the neat polymer. The cross-linking of the PI with polyetheramine Jeffamine D-400 allowed to prepare PI/Jeffamine/BAIM-TFSI (50%) membrane with E′ value of 300 MPa at 130 °C. The ionic conductivity of this cross-linked composite membrane reached the level of 10?2 S/cm at 130 °C, suggesting, therefore, its potential use in medium-temperature fuel cells operating in water-free conditions.  相似文献

Sulfonated polyimides with tertiary nitrogen in the polymer backbone were synthesized with 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐diaminobiphenyl 2,2′‐disulfonic acid, 2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane, and diaminoacrydine hemisulfate. They were crosslinked with a series of dibromo alkanes to improve the hydrolytic stability. The crosslinked sulfonated polyimide films were characterized for their thermal stability, ion‐exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, hydrolytic stability, and proton conductivity. All the sulfonated polyimides had good thermal stability and exhibited a three‐step degradation pattern. With an increase in the alkyl chain length of the crosslinker, IEC decreased as 1.23 > 1.16 > 1.06 > 1.01, and the water uptake decreased as 7.29 > 6.70 > 6.55 > 5.63. The order of the proton conductivity of the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides at 90 °C was as follows: polyimide crosslinked with dibromo butane (0.070) > polyimide crosslinked with dibromo hexane (0.055) > polyimide crosslinked with dibromo decane (0.054). The crosslinked polyimides showed higher hydrolytic stability than the uncrosslinked polyimides. Between the crosslinked polyimides, the hydrolytic stability decreased with an increase in the alkyl chain length of the crosslinker. The crosslinked and uncrosslinked sulfonated polyimides exhibited almost the same proton conductivities. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 2370–2379, 2005  相似文献

Acid–base polymer blends for polymer electrolyte membranes have been prepared by blending sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) to reduce methanol uptake and to decrease methanol permeability while maintaining high proton conductivity. The acid‐base interaction occurring on the sulfonic acid group and on the tertiary amide group was characterized by FTIR and DMA. As the composition of PVP lowered than 20 wt % in the blends, the acid–base interaction causes great reduction on methanol uptake and the methanol permeability; however, the proton conductivity is still high. In this work, membrane–electrode assemblies (MEAs) have been prepared for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) from both blend membrane and Nafion 117. DMFC single cell performance was also evaluated. Results confirmed that SPEEK (with the degree of sulfonation (DS) = 69%) blended with PVP (Mn = 1,300,000) with a ratio of 80/20 (w/w) exhibits higher open‐circuit voltages (OCV) and lower polarization loss than those of Nafion 117. These acid–base blends will be suitable for DMFC application. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 565–572, 2006  相似文献

The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has the potential to replace lithium‐ion rechargeable batteries in portable electronic devices, but currently experiences significant power density and efficiency losses due to high methanol crossover through polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs). Numerous publications document the synthesis and characterization of new PEMs for the DMFC. This article reviews this research, transport phenomena in PEMs, and experimental techniques used to evaluate new PEMs for the DMFC. Although many PEMs do not show significant improvements over Nafion®, the benchmark PEM in DMFCs, experimental results show that several new PEMs exhibit lower methanol crossover at similar proton conductivities and/or higher DMFC power densities. These results and recommendations for future research are discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Parts B: Polym Phys 44: 2201–2225, 2006  相似文献

To investigate the effect of crosslinking by a hydrophilic group on a sulfonated polyimide electrolyte membrane, sulfonated polyimide end‐capped with maleic anhydride was synthesized using 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐diaminobiphenyl, 2,2′‐disulfonic acid, 2‐bis [4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl] hexafluropropane and maleic anhydride. The sulfonated polyimides end‐capped with maleic anhydride were self‐crosslinked or crosslinked with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. A series of the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides having various ratios of sulfonated polyimide and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate were prepared and compared with uncrosslinked and self‐crosslinked sulfonated polyimides. The synthesized sulfonated polyimide films were characterized for FTIR spectrum, thermal stability, ion exchange capacity, water uptake, hydrolytic stability, morphological structure, and proton conductivity. The formation of sulfonated polyimide was confirmed in FTIR spectrum. Thermal stability was good for all the sulfonated polyimides that exhibited a three‐step degradation pattern. Ion exchange capacity was the same for both the uncrosslinked and the self‐crosslinked sulfonated polyimides (1.30 mEq/g). When the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) were compared, the ion exchange capacity was decreased as 1.27 > 1.25 > 1.23 mEq/g and water uptake was increased as 23.8 < 24.0 < 24.3% with the increase in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate content. All the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate were stable for over 200 h at 80 °C in deionized water. Morphological structure and mean intermolecular distance were obtained by WAXD. Proton conductivities were measured at 30, 50, 70, and 90 °C. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate increased with the increase in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate content despite the fact that the ion exchange capacity was decreased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the first time a fluorinated polyoxadiazole doped with phosphoric acid as a proton-conducting membrane for operation at temperatures above 100 °C and low humidities for fuel cells has been reported. Fluorinated polyoxadiazole with remarkable chemical stability was synthesized. No changes in the molecular weight (about 200,000 g mol−1) can be observed when the polymer is exposed for 19 days to mixtures of sulfuric acid and oleum. Protonated membranes with low doping level (0.34 mol of phosphoric acid per polyoxadiazole unit, 11.6 wt.% H3PO4) had proton conductivity at 120 °C and RH = 100% in the order of magnitude of 10−2 S cm−1. When experiments are conducted at lower external humidity, proton conductivity values drop an order of magnitude. However still a high value of proton conductivity (6 × 10−3 S cm−1) was obtained at 150 °C and with relative humidity of 1%. In an effort to increase polymer doping, nanocomposite with sulfonated silica containing oligomeric fluorinated-based oxadiazole segments has also been prepared. With the addition of functionalized silica not only doping level but also water uptake increased. For the nanocomposite membranes prepared with the functionalized silica higher proton conductivity in all range of temperature up to 120 °C and RH = 100% (in the order of magnitude of 10−3 S cm−1) was observed when compared to the plain membrane (in the order of magnitude of 10−5 S cm−1).  相似文献

The three-dimensional structures of polymer membranes are different at surfaces and inside bulks, and thus, in general, physical/chemical properties are also different. Morphologies and properties of membrane surfaces are now visualized by current-sensing atomic force microscopy. The increase in performances of a single cell is discussed based on the three-dimensional structures of the polymer membrane, anion-exchange membrane as an example, used for fuel cells. Other reports on Nafion®, proton-exchange membrane, are also introduced to show the importance of this microscopic method.  相似文献

Increasing global energy requirements, localized power issues and the need for less environmental impact are now providing even more incentive to make fuel cells a reality. A number of technologies have been demonstrated to be feasible for generation of power from fuel cells over the last several years. Proton exchange membranes (PEM) have emerged as an essential factor in the technology race. DuPont has supplied Nafion® perfluorinated membranes in fuel cells for space travel for more than 35 years and they have played an integral part in the success of recent work in portable, stationary and transportation applications. The basis for PEM fuel cell emergence and DuPont technology utilization will be discussed.  相似文献

Method for the modification of proton-conducting Nafion membranes by using a zirconium citrate one-substituted salt, aimed at the improving of characteristics of membranes for polymer-electrolyte-based fuel cells, is suggested. In the method, the membrane is impregnated first with zirconyl chloride and then with citric acid; an insoluble sol is thus formed in the membrane pores. The impregnation is carried out in ultrasound bath, using an isopropyl alcohol-water solvent, to make it more rapid and uniform. It is shown that the impregnation lowers the real component of the membrane impedance. The discharge characteristics of the impregnated and nonimpregnated membranes are compared.  相似文献

The paper deals with the synthesis and characterization of a new series of anhydrous conducting acid‐doped complex membranes based on polyimide (PI) and ionic liquid (IL) for high‐temperature fuel cells via a new route. For this purpose, three imidazolium‐based ILs (RIm+BF4?) with different alkyl chain lengths (R=methyl, ethyl, and butyl) are added into polyamic acid (PAA) intermediate prepared from the reaction of benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride and diaminodiphenylsulfone in different –COOH/imidazolium molar ratios (n = 0.5, 1, and 2). Then, the thermally imidized complex membrane was doped with H2SO4. The conductivities of acid‐doped PI/IL complex membranes prepared by taking n of 1 are found to be in the range of 10?4?10?5 S cm?1 at 180°C, whereas the acid‐free PI/IL complex membranes show the conductivity at around 10?9?10?10 S cm?1. Thermogravimetric analysis results reveal that the acid‐doped PI/IL complex membranes are thermally stable up to 250°C. Dynamic mechanical analysis results of the acid‐doped ionically interacted complex membrane show that the mechanical strengths of the PI/IL complex membranes including 1‐methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (MeIm‐BF4) and 1‐ethyl 3‐methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EtIm‐BF4) are comparable with those of pristine PI until 200°C. Furthermore, it can be clearly emphasized that the ionic interaction between carboxylic acid groups of PAA's and IL's cations offers a positive role in long‐term conductivity stability by preventing the IL migration at high temperatures. On the other hand, preliminary methanol permeability tests of the acid‐doped membranes show that they can also be considered as an alternative for direct methanol fuel cells. Novel nanocomposite membranes were prepared with sulfonated polyoxadiazole and different amounts of sulfonated dense and mesoporous (MCM-41) silica particles. It has been shown that particle size and functionality of sulfonated silica particles play an important role when they are used as fillers for the development of polymer electrolyte nanocomposite membrane for fuel cells. No significant particle agglomerates were observed in all nanocomposite membranes prepared with sulfonated dense silica particles, as analyzed by SEM, AFM, TGA, DMTA and tensile tests. The Tg values of the composite membranes increased with addition of sulfonated silica, indicating an interaction between the sulfonic acid groups of the silica and the polyoxadiazole. Constrained polymer chains in the vicinity of the inorganic particles were confirmed by the reduction of the relative peak height of tan δ. A proton conductivity of 0.034 S cm−1 at 120 °C and 25% RH, which is around two-fold higher than the value of the pristine polymer membrane was obtained.  相似文献

New sulfonated poly(imidoaryl ether sulfone) copolymers derived from sulfonated 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, and imidoaryl biphenol were evaluated as polymer electrolyte membranes for direct methanol fuel cells. The sulfonated membranes were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The state of water in the membranes was measured with differential scanning calorimetry, and the existence of free water and bound water was discussed in terms of the sulfonation level. The 10 wt % weight loss temperatures of these copolymers were above 470 °C, indicating excellent thermooxidative stability to meet the severe criteria of harsh fuel‐cell conditions. The proton conductivities of the membranes ranged from 3.8 × 10?2 to 5 × 10?2 S/cm at 90 °C, depending on the degree of sulfonation. The sulfonated membranes maintained the original proton conductivity even after a boiling water test, and this indicated the excellent hydrolytic stability of the membranes. The methanol permeabilities ranged from 1.65 × 10?8 to 5.14 × 10?8 cm2/s and were lower than those of other conventional sulfonated ionomer membranes, particularly commercial perfluorinated sulfonated ionomer (Nafion). The properties of proton and methanol transport were discussed with respect to the state of water in the membranes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) micro tubular electrolyte membranes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) were prepared via the combined wet phase inversion and sintering technique. The as-derived YSZ mi- cro tubes consist of a thin dense skin layer and a thick porous layer that can serve as the electrode of fuel cells. The dense and the porous electrolyte layers have the thickness of 3-5 μm and 70-90 μm, respectively, while the inner surface porosity of the porous layer is higher than 28.1%. The two layers are perfectly integrated together to preclude the crack or flake of electrolyte film from the electrode. The presented method possesses distinct advantages such as technological simplicity, low cost and high reliability, and thus provides a new route for the preparation of micro tubular SOFCs.  相似文献

This paper reports the fuel cells (DMFC and PEMFC) performance using sulfonated poly(arylene ether ether nitrile) (SPAEEN) copolymers containing sulfonic acid group arranged in structurally different ways. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabricated from SPAEEN containing 60 mol% of angled naphthalenesulfonic acid group (m-SPAEEN-60) had superior performance over those derived from pendent naphthalenesulfonic acid group (p-SPAEEN) or sulfonated hydroquinone (HQ-SPAEEN) in H2/air and/or DMFC conditions. For example, the current density of the MEA using m-SPAEEN-60 at 0.5 V and 2.0 M methanol was 250 mA/cm2, whereas the current densities of the MEAs using p-SPAEEN-50 and HQ-SPAEEN-56 were 185 and 190 mA/cm2, respectively. In addition, compared with the sulfonated polysulfone (BPSH-35) and Nafion membranes, the copolymer containing nitrile group showed the improved cell performance. For example, the power density of the MEA using m-SPAEEN-60 at 250 mA/cm2 and 2.0 M methanol was 125 mW/cm2, whereas the power densities of the MEAs using sulfonated polysulfone (BPSH-35) and Nafion were 115 and 113 mW/cm2, respectively. m-SPAEEN-60 showed stable cell performance during extended operation (>100 h).  相似文献

Characteristics of fibril reinforced membranes developed by Asahi Glass Company are reviewed. PTFE-fibrils <1 μm in diameter are dispersed in ion-exchange membranes uniformly. Mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, tear strength, creep property and compressive property were examined and compared with non-reinforced membranes. Fibril reinforced membranes, even by the addition of a small amount of PTFE-fibrils (2.7 wt.%), show excellent mechanical strength, especially in creep and tear strength. Cell performance is nearly equal to the one using a non-reinforced membrane and cell voltage stays about the same during the cell operation at 80 °C for 3000 h.  相似文献

The effect of grafting solvents, such as isopropanol (iPrOH), tetrachloroethane (TCE), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and toluene, on the preparation of poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene)-graft-poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (ETFE-g-PSSA) electrolyte membranes by the γ-ray preirradiation grafting method was investigated. It was found that the iPrOH can drastically accelerate the grafting, resulting in a higher degree of grafting. However, for an appropriate degree of grafting of about 50%, the sulfonic acid groups in the ETFE-g-PSSA membrane prepared with the iPrOH were mainly distributed near the membrane surface, as shown by low proton conductivity in the membrane thickness direction. In contrast to this result, the ETFE-g-PSSA membranes prepared with the THF, toluene and TCE exhibited uniform distribution of the sulfonic acid groups in the membrane. Especially, in the case of the TCE grafting solvent, the chemical stability of the resultant electrolyte membrane was clearly higher than those prepared with the other grafting solvents.  相似文献

The research was focused on synthesis of proton conductive, easily degradable polymer membranes, which can be used as a model system to verify the efficiency of transition metal ions (TMI) in prevention of polymer degradation. Two polymers composed of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and styrenesulfonic acid (SS) were synthesized. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), elementary analysis, and FTIR and fluorescence spectroscopies. The results allowed determination of weight-average molecular weight and the copolymer composition. The protons of sulfonic groups were substituted by paramagnetic transition metal ions of various spin states (Cr(3+), S=3/2 and Mn(2+), S=5/2) with the loading varying from 0.5 up to 10 mol%. The effectiveness of spin catalysis was checked by EPR. The results obtained indicate enhancement of polymer stability in the presence of Mn(2+).  相似文献

This paper describes the preparation and electrochemical properties of new proton conducting polymer membranes, sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether) membrane-containing perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) moieties for fuel cell applications. The sulfonated polymers were prepared via thermal cyclodimerization of 9,9-bis(4-trifluorovinyloxyphenyl)fluorene and subsequent post-sulfonation using chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) as a sulfonating agent. The post-sulfonation reaction was carried out by changing the molar ratio of CSA/repeating unit of the polymer at room temperature for 5 h and the resulting sulfonated polymers showed different degrees of sulfonation (DS) and ion exchange capacities (IEC). With the increment of CSA content, the DS, IEC and water uptake of the sulfonated polymer membranes increased. Their proton conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature. The polymer membrane with an IEC value of 1.86 mmol/g showed a water content of 25% similar to Nafion-115's but showed higher proton conductivity than Nafion-115 over the temperature 25–80 °C. The polymer membrane with lower water uptake and higher IEC showed similar proton conductivity and methanol permeability to Nafion-115. These results confirmed that the sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether)-containing PFCB groups could be a promising material for fuel cell membranes.  相似文献
