This is a historical review of the discovery of naked charm particles and lifetime differences among charm species. These discoveries in the field of cosmic-ray physics were made by the innovation of nuclear emulsion techniques in Japan. A pair of naked charm particles was discovered in 1971 in a cosmic-ray interaction, three years prior to the discovery of the hidden charm particle, J/Psi, in western countries. Lifetime differences between charged and neutral charm particles were pointed out in 1975, which were later re-confirmed by the collaborative Experiment E531 at Fermilab. Japanese physicists led by K.Niu made essential contributions to it with improved emulsion techniques, complemented by electronic detectors. This review also discusses the discovery of artificially produced naked charm particles by us in an accelerator experiment at Fermilab in 1975 and of multiple-pair productions of charm particles in a single interaction in 1987 by the collaborative Experiment WA75 at CERN. 相似文献

The asymmetry of D- and D+ meson production in π-N scattering observed by the E791 experiment is a phenomenon typical for what is known as the leading particle effect in charm
hadroproduction. We show that the phenomenon can be explained by the effect of light quark fragmentation into charmed hadrons
(LQF). Meanwhile, the size of the LQF effect is estimated from the data of the E791 experiment. A comparison is made with
the estimate of the LQF effect from the prompt like-sign dimuon rate in neutrino experiments. The influence of the LQF effect
on the measurement of the nucleon strange distribution asymmetry from charged current charm production processes is briefly
discussed.

We report results of a search for flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC), lepton flavor, and lepton-number violating decays of the D0 (and its antiparticle) into three and four bodies. Using data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791, we examine modes with two leptons (muons or electrons) and a rho(0), K( *0), or straight phi vector meson or a nonresonant pi(pi), Kpi, or KK pair of pseudoscalar mesons. No evidence for any of these decays is found. Therefore, we present branching-fraction upper limits at 90% confidence level for the 27 decay modes examined (18 new). 相似文献

We present our new measurement of charm dimuon production in neutrino-iron interactions based upon the full statistics collected
by the NOMAD experiment. After background subtraction we observe 15,340 charm dimuon events, providing the largest sample
currently available. The analysis exploits the large inclusive charged current sample (about 9 million events after all analysis
cuts) to constrain the total systematic uncertainty to ∼2%. The extraction of strange sea and charm production parameters
is also discussed. 相似文献

The momentum distribution of electrons from decays of heavy flavor (charm and bottom) for midrapidity absolute value of y < 0.35 in p + p collisions at square root of s = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range 0.3 < pT < 9 GeV/c. Two independent methods have been used to determine the heavy-flavor yields, and the results are in good agreement with each other. A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative QCD calculation agrees with the data within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties, with the data/theory ratio of 1.71+/-0.02stat+/-0.18sys for 0.3 < pT < 9 GeV/c. The total charm production cross section at this energy has also been deduced to be sigma cc = 567+/-57stat+/-193sys microb. 相似文献

The leading particle effect in charm hadroproduction is an enhancement of the cross section for a charmed hadron D in the forward direction of the beam when the beam hadron has a valence parton in common with the D. The large D(+)/D(-) asymmetry observed by the E791 experiment is an example of this phenomenon. We show that the heavy-quark recombination mechanism provides an economical expla-nation for this effect. In particular, the D(+)/D(-) asymmetry can be fit reasonably well using a single parameter whose value is consistent with a recent determination from charm photoproduction. 相似文献

In this paper a search for associated charm production both in neutral and charged current ν-nucleus interactions is presented.
The improvement of automatic scanning systems in the CHORUS experiment allows an efficient search to be performed in emulsion
for short-lived particles. Hence a search for rare processes, like the associated charm production, becomes possible through
the observation of the double charm-decay topology with a very low background. About 130000 ν interactions located in the
emulsion target have been analysed. Three events with two charm decays have been observed in the neutral-current sample with
an estimated background of 0.18±0.05. The relative rate of the associated charm cross-section in deep inelastic ν interactions,
σ(cc̄ν)/σNC
DIS=(3.62+2.95
-2.42(stat)±0.54(syst))×10-3 has been measured. One event with two charm decays has been observed in charged-current νμ interactions with an estimated background of 0.18±0.06 and the upper limit on associated charm production in charged-current
interactions at 90% C.L. has been found to be σ(cc̄μ-)/σCC<9.69×10-4.

Transverse momentum spectra of electrons from Au+Au collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The spectra show an excess above the background from photon conversions and light hadron decays. The electron signal is consistent with that expected from semileptonic decays of charm. The yield of the electron signal dN(e)/dy for p(T) > 0.8 GeV/c is 0.025+/-0.004(stat)+/-0.010(syst) in central collisions, and the corresponding charm cross section is 380+/-60(stat)+/-200(syst) microb per binary nucleon-nucleon collision. 相似文献

We compute the charm dijet photoproduction cross section at next-to-leading order of QCD in the zero-mass variable flavour
number scheme, i.e. with active charm quarks in the proton and photon. The results are compared to recent measurements from
the ZEUS experiment at HERA. The predictions for various distributions agree with the data, in particular for large momentum
fractions of the partons in the photon, where direct photon processes dominate. At low momentum fractions, the predictions
are quite sensitive to the charm content in the photon. The experimental data are shown to favour parameterizations with a
substantial charm-quark density such as the one proposed by Cornet et al. 相似文献

We report the first observation of diffractively produced open charm in 800-GeV/c pp collisions of the type pp-->pD*X. We measure cross sections of sigma(diff)(D*+) = (0.185+/-0.044+/-0.054) (mu)b and sigma(diff)(D(*-)) = (0.174+/-0.034+/-0.029) (mu)b. Our measurements are based on 4.3x10(9) events recorded by FNAL E690 in the fixed-target run of 1991. We compare our results with previous fixed-target charm experiments. 相似文献

In the first holographic bubble chamber experiment — the HOBC experiment — we have accumulated a total of 40000 holograms with particle interactions. We have determined the total charm pair cross section inpN collisions to be 23.3 ?7.7 +10 μb and 3.6 ?1.7 +2.3 μb for 360 and 200 GeV/c incident protons respectively. We have assumed a linear dependence of the cross section on the atomic number of the target. This experiment has demonstrated the feasibility of holographic recording in small bubble chambers. Assuming that the charm cross section can be described by the standard QCD factorized expression with gluon fusion and quark-antiquark annihilation, we have used our measured charm cross sections with other measurements to determine the effective charmed quark mass to be 1.8 ?0.35 +0.25 GeV/c2. TheK factor, which describes the importance of the higher order corrections, is calculated to be 9.8 ?6.9 +12.5 (See noted added in proof.) 相似文献

It is well known that the study of flavour physics and CP violation is very important to critically test the Standard Model
and to look for possible signature of new physics beyond it. The observation of CP violation in kaon system in 1964 has ignited
a lot of experimental and theoretical efforts to understand its origin and to look for CP violation effects in other systems
besides the neutral kaons. The two B-factories BABAR and BELLE, along with other experiments, in the last decade or so made studies in flavour physics and CP
violation a very interesting one. In this article we discuss the status and prospectives of the flavour physics associated
with the strange, charm and bottom sectors of the Standard Model. The important results in kaon sector will be briefly discussed.
Recently, mixing in the charm system has been observed, which was being pursued for quite some time without any success. The
smallness of the mixing parameters in the charm system is due to the hierarchical structure of the CKM matrix. Interestingly,
so far we have not found CP violation in the charm system but in the future, with more dedicated experiments at charm threshold,
the situation could change. Many interesting observations have been made in the case of bottom mesons and some of them show
some kind of deviations from that of the Standard Model expectations which are mainly associated with the b → s flavour changing neutral current transitions. It is long believed that the B
s
system could be the harbinger of new physics since it is a system in which both bottom and strange quarks are the constituents.
Recently, D0 and CDF announced their result for the B
s
mixing which is claimed to be the first possible new physics signature in the flavour sector. We plan to touch upon all important
issues pointing out both theoretical and experimental developments and future prospects in this review article. 相似文献

Measurements of open charm hadro-production from CERN and Fermilab experiments are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the absolute cross sections and on their A and √s dependences. Differentialp T andx F cross sections calculated with thePythia event generator are found to be in reasonable agreement with recent data. The calculations are scaled to nucleus-nucleus collisions and the expected lepton pair yield is deduced. The charm contribution to the low mass dilepton continuum observed by the CERES experiment is found to be negligible. In particular, it is shown that the observed low mass dilepton excess in S-Au collisions cannot be explained by charm enhancement. 相似文献

In the dual topological unitarization scheme, we derive a model for theu, d, ands quark fragmentation into mesons by considering the parton interpretation of planar one particle inclusive cross sections. A good agreement with experiment is obtained. Relying on these results, we generalize the model in order to include the charm fragmentation functions into any meson and again get a nice agreement with data. 相似文献
