Let be an involutorial antiautomorphism of the division ring K with char K 2 and E := {r K | rr = 1}. Refining a result of R. Baer we prove: (card E–1)² < card K =id. This is done by computing card E and the cardinal numbers of the sets consisting of the -symmetric respectively the -skew-symmetric elements.     

Eine Bemerkung zum Satz von Ivory

In 1809 J. IVORY found a distance relation between any two confocal ellipsoids in Euclidean space E³. After that, the theorem of IVORY has been formulated for any two nondegenerate confocal quadrics of the same type. In this paper we succeed in completing these results and in formulating and proving them uniformly for any two quadrics of the same type belonging to a general system of confocal quadrics.

Previous negative results on the comparison of two approximation processes {V_n}, {W_n} are further developed so as to obtain necessary conditions for the comparison of sequences of linear functionals. Indeed, the assertions are based upon the behaviour of the bilinear form V _nf W _ng—W _nf V _ng on certain subsets of the unit sphere. One of the applications is concerned with the pointwise approximation by convolution processes.
