PHENIX measures leptons at mid and forward rapidities and extracts leptons resulting from semi-leptonic decays of heavy quarks. We present PHENIX results related to heavy quark production, specifically the invariant cross section of the non-photonic single electrons produced at midrapidity in p+p and d+Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN} } = 200$ GeV. The measured cross section for p+p collisions is compared with the NLO prediction, and a possible excess over the prediction is noted. The measured cross section for d+Au collisions scales with the number of colliding nucleon pairs from the p+p spectra.  相似文献

The PHENIX experiment has studied open heavy flavor production in  =200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions using the semi-leptonic decay into single muons. The results from these measurements and the details of the analysis technique are presented. The results from p+p collisions obtained at mid-rapidity are compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The production of light mesons is the major background source for the open flavor measurement using muons. The nuclear modification factor for light mesons were measured in Cu+Cu collisions at  =200 GeV is presented.  相似文献

Potential near- and long-term physics opportunities with jets, heavy flavors and electromagnetic probes at RHIC are presented. Much new physics remains to be unveiled using these probes, due to their sensitivity to the initial high density stage of RHIC collisions, when quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation is expected. Additional physics will include addressing deconfinement, chiral symmetry restoration, properties of the strongly-coupled QGP and a possible weakly-interacting QGP, color glass condensate in the initial state, and hadronization. To fully realize the physics prospects of the RHIC energy regime, new detector components must be added to existing experiments, the RHIC machine luminosity upgraded, and a possible new detector with significantly extended coverage and capabilities added.Arrival of the final proofs: 26 July 2005PACS: 25.75Nq  相似文献

Comparisons of particle production from high-energy ion collisions with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations show good agreement down to moderate transverse momentum values. Distributions of azimuthal angle differences between coincident hadrons in these collisions support a partonic origin to the particle production, again down to moderate transverse momentum values. The rapidity dependence of inclusive and coincident particle production can therefore be used to probe parton distribution functions down to small momentum fractions where theory anticipates that parton saturation could be present. This paper describes how such experiments could be completed.Arrival of the final proofs: 27 July 2005PACS: 12.38 Qk, 13.88. + e, 24.85. + p  相似文献

A new Monte Carlo model of jet quenching in nuclear collisions, CUJET1.0, is applied to predict the jet flavor dependence of the nuclear modification factor for fragments f=π,D,B,e(-) from quenched jet flavors g,u,c,b in central collisions at RHIC and LHC. The nuclear modification factors for different flavors are predicted to exhibit a novel level crossing pattern over a transverse momentum range 5相似文献

We review the application and successes of a phase-space coalescence plus fragmentation model that has been applied for hadronization at RHIC. The physical concept is discussed together with the practical implementation. The robustness of main predictions is reviewed together with several open issues like relevance of three dimensional calculation, finite width of the wave functions, effects of quark masses, energy-entropy conservation, space-momentum correlation. Eventually the relevance of coalescence also for the study of the microscopic interaction of heavy quarks is highlighted.  相似文献

Experimental data on transverse particle spectra obtained by the STAR, PHENIX, PHOBOS, and BRAHMS collaborations at the RHIC are analyzed in the framework of the generalized concept of z-scaling. It was developed for analysis of inclusive particle production in proton-(anti)proton collisions at high p T and high multiplicities. The general scheme of the approach based on the physical principles of self-similarity, locality, and fractality is reviewed. Independence of the scaling function ψ(z) from energy, multiplicity, and atomic weight for h ±, π ±,0, K S 0 , and Λ hadrons produced in Au-Au and Cu-Cu collisions at √s = 130 and 200 GeV is discussed. Based on z-scaling, the multiplicity dependence of pion transverse spectra up to p T = 25 GeV/c in Au-Au collisions at √s = 200 GeV for experiments at the RHIC is predicted. The text was submitted by the author in English.  相似文献

Effects of partonic interactions in heavy ion collisions at RHIC are studied in a multiphase transport model (AMPT) that includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions. It is found that a large parton scattering cross section is needed to understand the measured elliptic flow of pions and two-pion correlation function.  相似文献

A new Monte Carlo implementation of Djordjevic?s dynamical scattering generalization of the DGLV radiative energy loss opacity series is used with a hybrid interpolation scheme to compute both light and heavy quark jet quenching up to third order in opacity. The enhancement of the ratio of bottom to charm quark energy loss due to perturbative long range color magnetic effects in nonuniform Bjorken expanding geometries is found to reduce the significance of the heavy quark jet puzzle posed by the observed near equality (within sizeable errors) of pion and nonphotonic electron nuclear modification at RHIC. Jet Flavor Spectroscopy discussed below will be a powerful tool to differentiate competing dynamical models of the QGP produced in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions.  相似文献

Heavy quarks are produced early in the relativistic heavy ion collisions, and provide an excellent probe into the hot and dense nuclear matter created at RHIC. In these proceedings, we will discuss recent STAR measurements of heavy flavor production, to investigate the heavy quark interaction with the medium. Electromagnetic probes, such as electrons, provide information on the various stages of the medium evolution without modification by final stage interactions. Di-electron production measurements by STAR will also be discussed.  相似文献

In this talk I review the use of scattered high-pt partons as probes of the quark-gluon plasma formed at RHIC. Recent results from both STAR and PHENIX are used to assess our current understanding of how these partons lose energy as they travel through the plasma and the extent that energy-loss can be used to extract properties of the plasma.  相似文献

We study photoproduction of jets and heavy flavors in a polarized collider mode of HERA and in polarized ep collisions at √S ≈ GeV. We examine the sensitivity of the cross sections and their asymmetries to the proton’s polarized gluon distribution and to the completely unknown parton distributions of longitudinally polarized photons.  相似文献

We present predictions on the total cross sections and on the rho parameter for present and future pp and (-)pp colliders, and on total cross sections for gammap-->hadrons at cosmic-ray energies and for gammagamma-->hadrons up to sqrt[s]=1 TeV. These predictions are based on an extensive study of possible analytic parametrizations invoking the largest hadronic dataset available at t=0. The uncertainties on total cross sections reach 1.9% at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, 3.1% at the Tevatron, and 4.8% at the Large Hadron Collider, whereas those on the rho parameter are, respectively, 5.4%, 5.2%, and 5.4%.  相似文献

The centrality dependence of thermal parameters describing hadron multiplicities and intermediate-mass dilepton spectra in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC is analyzed. From experimental hadron multiplicities we deduce evidence for strangeness saturation at high energy and maximum centrality. The observed dilepton spectra can be parameterized by a centrality independent temperature.  相似文献

The energy and centrality independence of the limiting fragmentation for produced mesons have been used to extract the reduced pseudorapidity (η′ = ηη beam ) distributions of charged baryons at forward rapidity. The distribution crosses at η′ ≈ = −1 suggesting the prominence of beam protons above that rapidity. The loss of beam rapidity has been extracted which has been found to increase with centrality.  相似文献

The lensing effect of a cosmic string is studied, and some new methods are proposed to detect the cosmic string. The technique for using jets as extended gravitational lensing probes was first explored by Kronberg. We use the “alignment-breaking parameter” ηG as a sensitive indicator of gravitational distortion by a wiggly cosmic string. Then, we applied the non-constant deflection angle to jets, and ηG of a specific jet is just related to the projected slope of the jet. At least three jets in the sample of Square Kilometer Array (SKA) would have significant signals (ηG>10°) if the wiggly infinite cosmic string existed. The distortion of elliptical object is also studied and used to do a statistical research on the directions of axes and ellipticities of galaxies. In the direction of the string, we find that galaxies appear to be more elliptical for an observer and the distribution of apparent ellipticity changes correspondingly. The ellipticity distribution of current SDSS spiral sample has the signalto-noise ratio up to 8.48 which is large enough for astronomical observations. The future survey, such as Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and Dark Energy Survey (DES) would weaken the requirement of special geometry in the data processing. As a result, all kinds of distributions, including ellipticity axis distribution, would serve as probes to detect wiggly strings in the near future. In brief, if a wiggly cosmic string existed, these signals would be convenient to be observed with the future weak lensing survey or other surveys in the deep space. If there was no lensing signal in these distributions, it would give the upper limit of the abundance of infinite strings.  相似文献

At LHC energies, the Lorentz factor will be 3400 for Pb+Pb collisions, and the electromagnetic interactions will play important roles. The cross sections for the electromagnetic particle productions are very large and cannot be ignored for the lifetimes of the beams and background. In this article, we are going to study some of the electromagnetic processes at the RHIC and the LHC and show the cross section calculations of the electron-positron pair production with the giant dipole resonance of the ions.  相似文献

We calculate the production of prompt and thermal photons which includes the contribution of gluons in relativistic heavy ion collisions with the equilibrium and non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma. We develop a new thermal jet-photon conversion mechanism which plays a vital role in the low transverse momentum region. The effect of the non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma enhances the contribution of the thermal photons. The shadowing and iso-spin of the nucleus which can properly estimate the prompt photon production are also considered in our calculation.  相似文献

Properties of transverse momentum spectra and rapidity dependence of protons and antiprotons in Au?Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN} } = 200$ GeV are discussed. The net-proton yields are approximately constant at |y| < 1 and increases towards y ≈ 3. The mean rapidity loss is estimated to be in the range of 1.9 < δy <2.4.  相似文献
