Oxopentacyano-complexes of molybdenum(IV) and tungsten(IV) in photolysis of octacyanometalates(IV)

Summary Ligand-field (LF) photolysis of aqueous alkaline solutions of K₄[M(CN)₈] (M = Mo or W) containing KCN produces [MO(CN)₅]^3– species. NaCs₂]MO(CN)₅] was isolated and characterised by u.v.-vis., i.r. and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the reactions of [MO(OH)(CN)₄]^3– with free CN^– are described and the relations between octa-, penta- and tetra-cyanocomplexes are summarised.     

Titanocene(IV) and vanadocene(IV) complexes of dicyanomethanidobenzoate

The new titanocene and vanadocene complexes of the non-linear pseudohalides Cp₂Ti(dcmb)₂, Cp₂VCl(dcmb), (η⁵-C₅H₄Me)₂VCl(dcmb) and Cp₂V(dcmb)₂ were prepared by reaction of titanocene dichloride (Cp₂TiCl₂) and vanadocene dichlorides (Cp₂VCl₂, (η⁵-C₅H₄Me)₂VCl₂) with dicyanomethanidobenzoic acid (dcmbH, PhC(OH)C(CN)₂). These reactions have proven that the dcmb ligand could be coordinated to the central metal by oxygen or nitrogen donor atoms. The bonding mode of the dcmb ligand reflects properties of the central metal. The strongly oxophilic titanium(IV) shows the bonding through oxygen atom while bonding through nitrogen atom was observed for less oxophilic vanadium(IV). The bonding fashion of the dcmb ligands was determined by spectroscopic methods. X-ray diffraction analysis was used for the structure determination of the compounds dcmbH·H₂O, Cp₂Ti(dcmb)₂·CH₂Cl₂, (η⁵-C₅H₄Me)₂VCl(dcmb) and [Cp₂V(OC(Ph)C(CN)C(OMe)NH)][dcmb].     

Thermogravimetric studies of dipyridinium complexes of cerium(IV), thorium(IV) and zirconium(IV)

The TG curves of dipyridinium complexes of Ce(IV), Th(IV) and Zr(IV) have been reported. The mode of decomposition of the cerium and thorium complexes is broadly comparable but the decomposition of Zr complex shows some variation.     

Diorganotin(IV) and triorganotin(IV) derivatives of diphenic acid

The diorganotin(IV) and triorganotin(IV) derivatives R₂SnA (R = Me, n-Pr, n-Bu, n-Oct) and (R₃Sn)₂A [R = Me, Ph, cyclohexyl (Cyh); A = an anion of diphenic acid] have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopies. Tetrahedral tin forms a part of a diphenate cyclic ring in the diorganotin complexes with unidentate carboxylates, which have further been used for the synthesis of cyclic acid anhydrides. The soluble dinuclear triorganotin complexes (Me, Ph) possess symmetrically bonded carboxylates while the less soluble compound (Cyh₃Sn)₂A has two asymmetrically bonded carboxylates. All have a trigonal bipyramidal structure with R₃Sn units remote from each other.     

Photoreactivity of ethanolamine with octacyanomolybdate(IV) and octacyanotungstate(IV)

Irradiation of [M(CN)8]4– (M = Mo or W) in the ligand field band region causes the substitution of CN– by OH– in alkaline medium, resulting in the generation of [M(CN)7OH]4–. This species reacts with ethanolamine (EOA) in 1:1 stoichiometry. The rate constant has been determined spectrophotometrically at constant ionic strength. The rate constant and the quantum yield decrease with increasing complex concentration and increase with increasing EOA concentration and pH. The isosbestic point in the electronic spectra observed at later stages of irradiation signifies the formation of complexes in successive stages. An associative mechanism is proposed.
