Based on experimental investigations the present study evaluates instability and heat transfer phenomenon under condition of periodic flow boiling of water and ethanol in parallel triangular micro-channels. Tests were performed in the range of hydraulic diameter 100–220 μm, mass flux 32–200 kg/m2 s, heat flux 120–270 kW/m2, vapor quality x = 0.01–0.08. The period between successive events depends on the boiling number and decreases with an increase in the boiling number. The initial film thickness decreases with increasing heat flux. When the liquid film reached the minimum initial film thickness CHF regime occurred. Temporal variations of pressure drop, fluid and heater temperatures were periodic. Oscillation frequency is the same for the pressure drop, for the fluid temperature at the outlet manifold, and for the mean and maximum heater temperature fluctuations. All these fluctuations are in phase. The CHF phenomenon is different from that observed in a single channel of conventional size. A key difference between micro-channel heat sink and single conventional channel is amplification of parallel-channel instability prior to CHF. The dimensionless experimental values of the heat transfer coefficient are presented as the Nusselt number dependence on the Eotvos number and the boiling number.  相似文献

This paper reports the observations of boiling flow patterns in FC-72, performed during a microgravity experiment, recently flown aboard of Foton-M2 satellite, in some instances with the additional aid of an electrostatic field to replace the buoyancy force. The heater consisted of a flat plate, 20 × 20 mm2, directly heated by direct current. Several levels of liquid subcooling (from 20 to 6 K) and heat fluxes up to 200 kW/m2 were tested. A complete counterpart test, carried out on ground before the mission, allowed direct comparison with terrestrial data. The void fraction in microgravity revealed much larger than in normal gravity condition: this may be attributed to increased bubble coalescence that hinders vapor condensation in the bulk of the subcooled fluid. In several cases, an oscillatory boiling behavior was detected, leading to periodical variation of average wall overheating of some degrees. The electric field confirmed to be very effective, even at low values of applied voltage, in reducing bubble size, thus improving their condensation rate in the bulk fluid, and in enhancing heat transfer performance, suppressing the boiling oscillations and preventing surface dryout.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to visualize the flow pattern and to measure heat transfer coefficient during explosive boiling of water in parallel triangular micro-channels. Tests were performed in the range of inlet Reynolds number 25–60, mass flux 95–340 kg/m2s, and heat flux 80–330 kW/m2.The flow visualization showed that the behavior of long vapor bubbles, occurring in a micro-channel at low Reynolds numbers, was not similar to annular flow with interposed intermitted slugs of liquid between two long vapor trains. This process may be regarded as explosive boiling with periodic wetting and dryout.In the presence of two-phase liquid–vapor flow in the micro-channel, there are pressure drop oscillations, which increase with increasing vapor quality.This study shows strong dependence of the heat transfer coefficient on the vapor quality. The time when liquid wets the heated surface decreases with increasing heat flux. Dryout occurs immediately after venting of the elongated bubble.  相似文献

Jet impingement boiling is very efficient in cooling of hot surfaces as a part of the impinging liquid evaporates. Several studies have been carried out to measure and correlate the heat transfer to impinging jets as a function of global parameters such as jet subcooling, jet velocity, nozzle size and distance to the surface, etc. If physically based mechanistic models are to be developed, studies on the fundamentals of two-phase dynamics near the hot surface are required. In the present study the vapor–liquid structures underneath a subcooled (20 K) planar (1 mm × 9 mm) water jet, impinging the heated plate vertically with a velocity of 0.4 m/s, were analyzed by means of a miniaturized optical probe. It has a tip diameter of app. 1.5 μm and is moved toward the plate by a micrometer device. The temperature controlled experimental technique enabled steady-state experiments in all boiling regimes. The optical probe data provides information about the void fraction, the contact frequencies and the distribution of the vapor and liquid contact times as a function of the distance to the surface. The measured contact frequencies range from 40 Hz at the onset of nucleate boiling to nearly 20,000 Hz at the end of the transition boiling regime. Due to condensation in the subcooled jet vapor disappears at a distance to the surface of app. 1.2 mm in nucleate boiling. This vapor layer becomes smaller with increasing wall superheat. In film boiling a vapor film thickness of 8 ± 2 μm was found.  相似文献

A single subcooled jet of water which undergoes boiling upon impingement on a discrete heat source is studied experimentally using time-resolved stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV). The impinging jet issues from a 3.75 mm diameter sharp-edged orifice in a confining orifice plate positioned 4 orifice diameters from the target surface. The behavior at jet Reynolds numbers of 5,000 and 15,000 is compared for a constant jet inlet subcooling of 10 °C. Fluorescent illumination allows for simultaneous imaging of both the flow tracers and the vapor bubbles in the flow. Flow structure, time-averaged velocities, and turbulence statistics are reported for the liquid regions within the confinement gap for a range of heat inputs at both Reynolds numbers, and the effect of the vapor generation on the flow is discussed. Vapor generation from boiling is found to modify the liquid velocities and turbulence fluctuations in the confinement gap. Flow in the confinement gap is dominated by vapor flow, and the vapor bubbles disrupt both the vertical impinging jet and horizontal wall jet flow. Moreover, vapor bubbles are a significant source of turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation, with the bubbly regions above the heated surface experiencing the most intense turbulence modification. Spectral analysis indicates that a Strouhal number of 0.023 is characteristic of the interaction between bubbles and turbulent liquid jets.  相似文献

The jet boiling heat transfer of a bar water–CuO particle suspensions (nanofluids) jet impingement on a large flat surface was experimentally investigated. The experimental results were compared with those from water. The quantificational effects of the nanoparticles concentration and the flow conditions on the nucleate boiling heat transfer and the critical heat flux (CHF) were investigated. The experimental data showed that the jet boiling heat transfer for the water–CuO nanofluid is significantly different from those for water. The nanofluids have poor nucleate boiling heat transfer compared with the base fluid due to that a very thin nanoparticle sorption layer was formed on the heated surface. The CHF for the nanofluid increased compared with that of water. The reasons were that the solid–liquid contact angle decreased due to a very thin sorption layer on the heated surface and the jet and agitating effect of the nanoparticles on the subfilm layer enhance supply of liquid to the surface.  相似文献

Distributions of fluid temperature and its fluctuation are measured across a R-113 subcooled boiling flow channel with heat fluxes up to the CHF. A microthermocouple probe associated with an electric compensation circuit for the time constant is used for this purpose. Applying statistical treatments to the recorded temperature fluctuation, the heat transfer process in the flow and the characteristics of the bubbles flowing close to the heated surface are investigated. For high heat fluxes nearby the CHF, some bubbles adjacent to the heated surface show a clear trend to coalesce to large volume bubbles with relatively long passing periods, suggesting a mechanism of departure from nucleate boiling by periodical wall temperature rise due to momentary liquid film dryout underneath the large bubbles.  相似文献

The wicking height of a heated, evaporating meniscus formed by surface-wetting liquid in a vertical capillary tube with dynamic flow has been investigated. Previous experimental results and analytical models for measuring/predicting wicking heights in capillaries are also reviewed. An analytical model is presented that accounts for both major and minor vapor pressure losses along the vertical capillary tube. It is shown that during thermo-mechanical instability, vapor/meniscus interaction can become more prevalent due to increased vapor generation/pressure near the meniscus free surface. A relatively simple procedure for estimating onset of meniscus instability is presented and, when used with the vapor Reynolds number, can estimate whether vapor pressure loss is significant. By comparing the current model with the available experimental data, it is shown that the wicking height of an unstable, evaporating meniscus of n-pentane in a vertical, glass capillary tube is better estimated by considering vapor flow pressure losses – providing a 40% improvement over previous models that neglect vapor flow. In addition to vapor flow pressure loss, the dynamic contact angle and thin film profile must also be calculated to ensure accurate prediction of wicking height. Although the proposed model shows improvement, it is prone to under-predicting the actual meniscus wicking height for stable, evaporating menisci at lower relative heat loads. The proposed model can be used for predicting wicking behavior of heated, vertically-aligned liquid columns in capillary structures – which is relevant to the design of miniature heat transfer equipment/media such as wicked heat pipes, micro-channels and sintered/porous surfaces.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulation of annular flow boiling in a nanochannel is numerically investigated. In this research, an annular flow model is developed to predict the superheated flow boiling heat transfer characteristics in a nanochannel. To characterize the forced annular boiling flow in a nanochannel, an external driving force F?\textext \overrightarrow {F}_{\text{ext}} ranging from 1 to 12 PN (PN = pico newton) is applied along the flow direction to inlet fluid particles during the simulation. Based on an annular flow model analysis, it is found that saturation condition and superheat degree have great influences on the liquid–vapor interface. Also, the results show that due to the relatively strong influence of the surface tension in small channels, the interface between the liquid film and the vapor core is fairly smooth, and the mean velocity along the stream-wise direction does not change anymore. Also, it is found that the heat flux values depend on the boundary conditions. Finally, the Green–Kubo formula is used to calculate the thermal conductivity of liquid Argon. The simulations predict thermal conductivity of liquid Argon quite well.  相似文献

Enhancements of nucleate boiling critical heat flux (CHF) using nanofluids in a pool boiling are well-known. Considering importance of flow boiling heat transfer in various practical applications, an experimental study on CHF enhancements of nanofluids under convective flow conditions was performed. A rectangular flow channel with 10-mm width and 5-mm height was used. A 10 mm-diameter disk-type copper surface, heated by conduction heat transfer, was placed at the bottom surface of the flow channel as a test heater. Aqueous nanofluids with alumina nanoparticles at the concentration of 0.01% by volume were investigated. The experimental results showed that the nanofluid flow boiling CHF was distinctly enhanced under the forced convective flow conditions compared to that in pure water. Subsequent to the boiling experiments, the heater surfaces were examined with scanning electron microscope and by measuring contact angle. The surface characterization results suggested that the flow boiling CHF enhancement in nanofluids is mostly caused by the nanoparticles deposition of the heater surface during vigorous boiling of nanofluids and the subsequent wettability enhancements.  相似文献

The challenges that microchannel flow boiling technology faces are the lack of understanding of underlying mechanisms of heat transfer during various flow boiling regimes and a dearth of analytical models that can predict heat transfer. This paper aims to understand flow boiling heat transfer mechanisms by analyzing results obtained by synchronously captured high-speed flow visualizations with local, transient temperature data. Using Inverse Heat Conduction Problem (IHCP) solution methodology, the transient wetted surface heat flux and temperature as well as heat transfer coefficient are calculated. These are then correlated with the visual data. Experiments are performed on a single microchannel embedded with fast response temperature sensors located (630 µm) below the wetted surface. The height, width and length of the microchannel are 0.42 mm, 2.54 mm and 25.4 mm respectively. De-ionized, de-gassed water is used as the working fluid. Two heat fluxes are tested at each of the mass fluxes of 182 kg/(m2s) and 380 kg/(m2s). Because of vapor confinement, slug flow is observed for the tested conditions. The present study provides detailed insights into the effect of various events such as passage of vapor slug, 3-phase contact line, partial-dry-out and liquid slug on transient heat transfer coefficient. Transient heat transfer coefficient peaks when thin film evaporation mechanism is prevalent. The peak value is influenced by the distance of bubble incipience as well as downstream events obstructing the flow. Heat transfer coefficient during the passage of liquid slug and 3-phase contact line were relatively lower for the tested experimental conditions.  相似文献

Flow boiling heat transfer with the refrigerants R-134a and R-245fa in copper microchannel cold plate evaporators is investigated. Arrays of microchannels of hydraulic diameter 1.09 and 0.54 mm are considered. The aspect ratio of the rectangular cross section of the channels in both test sections is 2.5. The heat transfer coefficient is measured as a function of local thermodynamic vapor quality in the range −0.2 to 0.9, at saturation temperatures ranging from 8 to 30 °C, mass flux from 20 to 350 kg m−2 s−1, and heat flux from 0 to 22 W cm−2. The heat transfer coefficient is found to vary significantly with heat flux and vapor quality, but only slightly with saturation pressure and mass flux for the range of values investigated. It was found that nucleate boiling dominates the heat transfer. In addition to discussing measurement results, several flow boiling heat transfer correlations are also assessed for applicability to the present experiments.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out to understand the nucleate boiling characteristics and the critical heat flux (CHF) of water, the water based nanofluids and the water based nanoparticle-suspensions in vertical small heated tubes with a closed bottom. Here, the nanofluids consisted of the base liquid, the CuO nanoparticles and the surfactant. The nanoparticle-suspensions consisted of the base liquid and CuO nanoparticles. The surfactant was sodium dodecyl benzene sulfate. The study focused on the influence of the nanoparticles and surfactant on the nucleate boiling characteristics and the CHF. The experimental results indicated that the nanoparticle concentrations of the nanofluids and nanoparticle-suspensions in the tubes do not change during the boiling processes; the nanoparticles in the evaporated liquid are totally carried away by the steam. The boiling heat transfer rates of nanofluids are poorer than that of the base liquid. However, the boiling heat transfer rates of nanoparticle-suspensions are better than that of the base liquid. Comparing with the base liquid, the CHF of the nanofluids and the nanoparticle-suspensions is higher. The CHF is only related to nanoparticle mass concentration when the tube length and the tube diameter are fixed. The experiment confirm that there is a thin nanoparticle coating layer on the heated surface after the nanofluids boiling test but there is no coating layer on the heated surface after the nanoparticle-suspensions boiling test. This coating layer is the main reason that deteriorates the boiling heat transfer rates of nanofluids. An empirical correlation was proposed for predicting the CHF of nanofluids boiling in the vertical tubes with closed bottom.  相似文献

In this study, pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and critical heat fluxes (CHFs) are measured on a smooth square flat copper heater in a pool of pure water with and without carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed at 60 °C. Tested aqueous nanofluids are prepared using multi-walled CNTs whose volume concentrations are 0.0001%, 0.001%, 0.01%, and 0.05%. For the dispersion of CNTs, polyvinyl pyrrolidone polymer is used in distilled water. Pool boiling HTCs are taken from 10 kW/m2 to critical heat flux for all tested fluids. Test results show that the pool boiling HTCs of the aqueous solutions with CNTs are lower than those of pure water in the entire nucleate boiling regime. On the other hand, critical heat flux of the aqueous solution is enhanced greatly showing up to 200% increase at the CNT concentration of 0.001% as compared to that of pure water. This is related to the change in surface characteristics by the deposition of CNTs. This deposition makes a thin CNT layer on the surface and the active nucleation sites of the surface are decreased due to this layer. The thin CNT layer acts as the thermal resistance and also decreases the bubble generation rate resulting in a decrease in pool boiling HTCs. The same layer, however, decreases the contact angle on the test surface and extends the nucleate boiling regime to very high heat fluxes and reduces the formation of large vapor canopy at near CHF. For liquid helium (I) flowing through a uniformly heated vertical tube of 1 mm i.d., critical heat flux (CHF) of forced convective boiling has been measured under the conditions of a pressure of 0.199 MPa with vapor-to-liquid density ratio, of 0.409, length-to-diameter ratios from 25 to 200, mass velocities from 11 to 108 kg m?2 s?1, and inlet subcooling enthalpy from ?3.5 to +7.0 kJ kg?1. The experimental results thus obtained are analyzed revealing that the high pressure character, which has already been observed for water and Freons at extremely high pressures, is certainly found at high mass velocities for liquid helium too, though its appearance is restricted within very narrow limits due to the phenomenon that the wall temperature situation identifying the CHF condition fades away when the mass velocity becomes high.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of flow boiling in a non-uniformly heated microchannel were studied. Experiments were performed with a single microchannel and a series of microheaters to study the microscale boiling of water under axially non-uniform heat input conditions. A simultaneous real time visualization of the flow pattern was performed with the measurement of experimental parameters. Tests were performed over a mass flux of 309.8 kg/m2 s, and heat flux of 200–600 kW/m2. Test results showed different fluctuations of heated wall temperature, pressure drop, and mass flux with variations of the heat input along the flow direction. The unique periodic flow boiling in a single microchannel was observed at all heat flux conditions except for the increasing heat input distribution case which is the nearly uniform effective heat input distribution condition. The instability is correlated with flow pattern transition. For the nearly uniform effective heating condition, no fluctuation of the wall temperature, pressure drop, or mass flux was observed. We can relieve the instability by increasing total heat input along the flow direction and predict the instability using the transition criteria and flow pattern map.  相似文献

Flow boiling heat transfer in a single circular micro-channel of 0.19 mm ID has been experimentally investigated with R123 and R134a for various experimental conditions: heat fluxes (10, 15, 20 kW/m2), mass velocities (314, 392, 470 kg/m2 s), vapor qualities (0.2–0.85) and different saturation pressures (158, 208 kPa for R123; 900, 1100 kPa for R134a). The heat transfer trends between R123 and R134a are clearly distinguished. Whether nucleate boiling is suppressed at low vapor quality or not determines the heat transfer trend and mechanism in the flow boiling of micro-channels. High convective heat transfer coefficients in the two-phase flow of micro-channels enables nucleate boiling to be suppressed even at low vapor quality, depending on the wall superheat requirement for nucleate boiling. In the case of early suppression of nucleate boiling, specifically R123, heat transfer is dominated by evaporation of thin liquid films around elongated bubbles. In the contrary case, namely R134a, nucleate boiling is dominant heat transfer mechanism until its suppression at high vapor quality and then two-phase forced convection heat transfer becomes dominant. It is similar to the heat transfer characteristic of macro-channels except the enhancement of nucleate boiling and the short forced convection region.  相似文献

The paper provides a brief overview of the present state-of-the-art in the field of the critical heat flux (CHF) in subcooled flow conditions, with particular regard to high liquid velocity and highly subcooled conditions. These thermofluid-dynamic conditions to reach very high values of the CHF (up to 80 MW/m2) as requested by fusion technology requirements. After reporting the general features of the problems, some details are given about the main parameters affecting CHF in subcooled flow boiling (subcooling, pressure, duct diameter and length, fluid velocity, duct orientation and flow direction, heat flux distribution), and the respective knowledge and possible enhancement techniques for CHF (extended surfaces, hypervapotron, surface roughness, swirl flow, helically coiled wires) are reviewed. As fundamental aspects of highly subcooled flow boiling are not known and, on the other hand, such knowledge is necessary for any possible enhancement technique evaluation and for a theoretical modelling of the phenomenon, recent experiments carried out over the last five years on CHF in subcooled flow boiling are reviewed together with the main correlations and models currently used for data prediction, and suggestions for particular and general research guidelines are given.Der Aufsatz gibt einen kurzen Überblick über den gegenwärtigen Stand der Technik im Bereich der kritischen Wärmestromdichte bei unterkühltem Strömungssieden, mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf hohe Flüssigkeitsgeschwindigkeiten und hohen Unterkühlungsbedingungen. Diese thermo- und fluiddynamischen Bedingungen ermöglichen es, sehr hohe Werte der kritischen Wärmestromdichte (bis zu 80 MW/m2) zu erreichen, wie sie in den Anforderungen der Fusions-Technik verlangt werden. Nach einem Abschnitt über allgemeine Gesichtspunkte des Problems werden ein paar Einzelheiten der Hauptparameter bezüglich der kritischen Wärmestromdichte bei unterkühltem Strömungssieden (Unterkühlung, Druck, Rohrleitungsdurchmesser und Länge, Fluidgeschwindigkeit, Rohr-Orientierung und Strömungsrichtung, Wärmestromverteilung) genannt. Es wird ein Überblick gegeben über den jeweiligen Wissensstand und mögliche Verbesserungstechniken für die kritische Wärmestromdichte (vergrößerte Oberflächen, Hypervapotron, Oberflächenrauheit, Drallströmung, spiralförmig gewickelte Drähte). Da grundlegende Aspekte von extrem unterkühlten Strömungssieden unbekannt sind, eine Kenntnis dieser Aspekte andererseits für jede mögliche Entwicklung von Verbesserungstechniken sowie für eine theoretische Modellbildung über das Phänomen notwendig ist, wird eine Übersicht über die neuesten Experimente gegeben, die in den letzten fünf Jahren über die kritische Wärmestromdichte bei unterkühltem Strömungssieden durchgeführt wurden. This paper experimentally investigates flow boiling characteristics in a cross-linked microchannel heat sink at low mass fluxes and high heat fluxes. The heat sink consists of 45 straight microchannels each with a hydraulic diameter of 248 μm and heated length of 16 mm. Three cross-links, of width 500 μm, are introduced in the present microchannel heat sink to achieve better temperature uniformity and to avoid flow mal-distribution. Flow visualization, flow instability, two-phase pressure drop, and two-phase heat transfer measurements are conducted using the dielectric coolant FC-72 over a range of heat flux from 7.2 to 104.2 kW/m2, mass flux from 99 to 290 kg/m2 s, and exit quality from 0.01 to 0.71. Thermochromic liquid crystals are used in the present study as full-field surface temperature sensors to map the temperature distribution on the heat sink surface. Flow visualization studies indicate that the observed flow regime is primarily slug. Visual observations of flow patterns in the cross-links demonstrate that bubbles nucleate and grow rapidly on the surface of the cross-links and in the tangential direction at the microchannels’ entrance due to the effect of circulations generated in those regions. The two-phase pressure drop strongly increases with the exit quality, at xe,o < 0.3, and the two-phase frictional pressure drop increases by a factor of 1.6–2 compared to the straight microchannel heat sink. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing exit quality at a constant mass flux, which is caused by the dominance of the nucleation boiling mechanism in the cross-link region.  相似文献

Measurement of wall temperature profile and photographic observation are performed for R-113 subcooled boiling flow in a channel with heat fluxes up to the CHF. The incipient boiling superheats measured are little affected by mass velocity and liquid subcooling. Hysteresis in boiling observed by increasing and decreasing heat flux seems to be ascribed to variation in size of active nucleation cavities on the wall. Increasing heat flux up to the CHF, the bubble density on the heated surface increases and remarkably large coalescent bubbles appear periodically near the heating section outlet.  相似文献
