Discrete valuation overrings of Noetherian domains

We show that, given a chain of prime ideals in a Noetherian domain , there exist a finitely generated overring of and a saturated chain of primes in contracting term by term to the given chain. We further show that there is a discrete rank valuation overring of whose primes contract to those of the given chain.

     

Finite factorization domains

An integral domain is a finite factorization domain if each nonzero element of has only finitely many divisors, up to associates. We show that a Noetherian domain is an FFD for each overring of that is a finitely generated -module, is finite. For local this is also equivalent to each being finite. We show that a one-dimensional local domain is an FFD either is finite or is a DVR.

     

Approximation from locally finite-dimensional shift-invariant spaces

After exploring some topological properties of locally finite-dimensional shift-invariant subspaces of , we show that if provides approximation order , then it provides the corresponding simultaneous approximation order. In the case is generated by a compactly supported function in , it is proved that provides approximation order in the -norm with if and only if the generator is a derivative of a compactly supported function that satisfies the Strang-Fix conditions.

     

Asymptotic behaviour of certain sets of prime ideals

Let be ideals of the commutative ring , let be a Noetherian -module and let be a submodule of ; also let be an Artinian -module and let be a submodule of . It is shown that, whenever is a sequence of -tuples of non-negative integers which is non-decreasing in the sense that for all and all , then Ass is independent of for all large , and also Att is independent of for all large . These results are proved without any regularity conditions on the ideals , and so (a special case of) the first answers in the affirmative a question raised by S. McAdam.

     

Do isomorphic structural matrix rings have isomorphic graphs?

We first provide an example of a ring such that all possible structural matrix rings over are isomorphic. However, we prove that the underlying graphs of any two isomorphic structural matrix rings over a semiprime Noetherian ring are isomorphic, i.e. the underlying Boolean matrix of a structural matrix ring over a semiprime Noetherian ring can be recovered, contrary to the fact that in general cannot be recovered.

     

Representations at fixed points of smooth actions of compact connected Lie groups

Let be a compact connected Lie group acting smoothly on a connected closed manifold with nonempty fixed point set . In this paper, we study the relation between the cohomology of or and the equivalent representations of at fixed points.

     

On fully invariant ideals of the free group algebra

Let be the group algebra of a free noncyclic group over an integral domain . It is proved that if is not a field, then there exists a fully invariant ideal of such is torsion-free but not projective as an -module. In other words, there exists a pure nonprojective variety of group representations over .

     

On purely inseparable extensions and their generators

Let be a field of characteristic and a polynomial algebra in two variables. By a -generator of we mean an element of for which there exist and such that . We also define a -line of to mean any element of whose coordinate ring is that of a -generator. Then we prove that if is such that is a -line of (where is an indeterminate over ), then is a -generator of . This is analogous to the well-known fact that if is such that is a line of , then is a variable of . We also prove that if is a -line of for which there exist and such that , then is in fact a -generator of .

     

Correspondences of closed submodules

If is an -faithful -module, then there is an order-preserving correspondence between the closed -submodules of and the closed -submodules of , where .

     

Polynomial rings over Goldie-Kerr commutative rings II

An overlooked corollary to the main result of the stated paper (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 120 (1994), 989--993) is that any Goldie ring of Goldie dimension 1 has Artinian classical quotient ring , hence is a Kerr ring in the sense that the polynomial ring satisfies the on annihilators . More generally, we show that a Goldie ring has Artinian when every zero divisor of has essential annihilator (in this case is a local ring; see Theorem ). A corollary to the proof is Theorem 2: A commutative ring has Artinian iff is a Goldie ring in which each element of the Jacobson radical of has essential annihilator. Applying a theorem of Beck we show that any ring that has Noetherian local ring for each associated prime is a Kerr ring and has Kerr polynomial ring (Theorem 5).

     

Derivations with Engel conditions on multilinear polynomials

Let be a prime algebra over a commutative ring with unity and let be a multilinear polynomial over . Suppose that is a nonzero derivation on such that for all in some nonzero ideal of , with fixed. Then is central--valued on except when char and satisfies the standard identity in 4 variables.

     

The range of a ring homomorphism from a commutative -algebra

We prove that if a commutative semi-simple Banach algebra is the range of a ring homomorphism from a commutative -algebra, then is -equivalent, i.e. there are a commutative -algebra and a bicontinuous algebra isomorphism between and . In particular, it is shown that the group algebras , and the disc algebra are not ring homomorphic images of -algebras.

     

A note on quasi-Frobenius rings

It is shown that a semiperfect ring is quasi-Frobenius if and only if every closed submodule of is non-small, where denotes the direct sum of copies of the right -module and is the first infinite ordinal.

     

A reciprocity law for certain Frobenius extensions

Let be a finite Galois extension of algebraic number fields with Galois group . Assume that is a Frobenius group and is a Frobenius complement of . Let be the maximal normal nilpotent subgroup of . If is nilpotent, then every Artin L-function attached to an irreducible representation of arises from an automorphic representation over , i.e., the Langlands' reciprocity conjecture is true for such Galois extensions.

     

Integer-valued polynomials on Krull rings

If is a subring of a Krull ring such that is a valuation ring for every finite index , in Spec, we construct polynomials that map into the maximal possible (for a monic polynomial of fixed degree) power of , for all in Spec simultaneously. This gives a direct sum decomposition of Int, the -module of polynomials with coefficients in the quotient field of that map into , and a criterion when Int has a regular basis (one consisting of 1 polynomial of each non-negative degree).

     

On contravariant finiteness of subcategories of modules of projective dimension

Let be an artin algebra. This paper presents a sufficient condition for the subcategory of to be contravariantly finite in , where is the subcategory of consisting of --modules of projective dimension less than or equal to . As an application of this condition it is shown that is contravariantly finite in for each when is stably equivalent to a hereditary algebra.

     

A -dimensional extension of a lemma of Huneke's and formulas for the Hilbert coefficients

A -dimensional version is given of a -dimensional result due to C. Huneke. His result produced a formula relating the length to the difference , where is primary for the maximal ideal of a -dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring , is a minimal reduction of , , and is the Hilbert-Samuel polynomial of . We produce a formula that is valid for arbitrary dimension, and then use it to establish some formulas for the Hilbert coefficients of . We also include a characterization, in terms of the Hilbert coefficients of , of the condition .

     

Isometries of certain operator algebras

To a given basis on an -dimensional Hilbert space , we associate the algebra of all linear operators on having every as an eigenvector. So, is commutative, semisimple, and -dimensional. Given two algebras of this type, and , there is a natural algebraic isomorphism of and . We study the question: When does preserve the operator norm?

     

The local cohomology modules of Matlis reflexive modules are almost cofinite

We show that if and are Matlis reflexive modules over a complete Gorenstein local domain and is an ideal of such that the dimension of is one, then the modules are Matlis reflexive for all and if . It follows that the Bass numbers of are finite. If is not a domain, then the same results hold for .

     

Generalized rational identities of subnormal subgroups of skew fields

Let be a skew field with infinite center such that , and let be a non-central subnormal subgroup of the multiplicative group of . Then there are no non-trivial generalized rational identities of . This generalizes a theorem proved by Makar-Limanov.
