Ultrafast Condensed Matter Physics at Attoseconds

Our understanding of how photons couple to different degrees of freedom in solids forms the bedrock of ultrafast physics and materials sciences. In this review, the emergent ultrafast dynamics in condensed matter at the attosecond timescale have been intensively discussed. In particular, the focus is put on recent developments of attosecond dynamics of charge, exciton, and magnetism. New concepts and indispensable role of interactions among multiple degrees of freedom in solids are highlighted. ...

结合数值模拟和理论分析,研究凝聚介质中斜激波反射.采用龙格-库塔控制体积间断有限元方法,数值求解"刚性气体"状态方程形式下的欧拉方程组;理论分析凝聚介质中斜激波反射模式;运用激波极曲线理论,给出典型激波强度下正规反射向非正规反射过渡的临界角及波后状态.比较数值模拟结果和激波极曲线理论分析结果,得到典型弱、强斜激波的反射图像.

Meeting report: SNI2006: German Forum for Condensed Matter Research at Large Scale Facilities

More than 500 scientists working in the field of condensed matter research convened for a three-day meeting (SNI2006) in Hamburg, Germany, to present their latest results. They all share an enthusiasm for the use of large-scale facilities to probe the structure and dynamics of matter. The potential of synchrotron radiation, neutrons, particle probes and ionic beams to provide unique and complementary information in areas ranging from DNA to mechanical welds was demonstrated.

ESR Spectrometer as a Possible Tool for Rapid Analysis of Cane Sugar Purity

A method for quantitative/qualitative determination of cane sugar purity by ESR is devised. Relined sugar, plantation white sugar, soft brown sugar and raw sugar are used as samples in this work. The sucrose radical is produced by pulverization of sugar and it increases as the particle size decreases. Based on pulverization-induced sucrose radical, ESR study demonstrates the effects of sugar purity on characteristic of ESR spectrum. The relationship between the sucrose contents and peak area under the ESR spectrum is manifested. It is found that the peak area or sucrose radical concentration increases linearly with the increase of sucrose content. Using the linear regression method, the sucrose amount can be revealed. This approach is a promising fast and accurate method for sugar purity analysis.

The stochastic variational method is a powerful approach to solve few-body problems. The application of the stochastic variational approach to few-body problems in condensed matter physics is presented. The examples include calculation of energy spectra of atoms in magnetic field, confined atoms and trapped Fermi gases.

A Condensed Matter Interpretation of SM Fermions and Gauge Fields

We present the bundle (Aff(3)⊗ℂ⊗Λ)(ℝ³), with a geometric Dirac equation on it, as a three-dimensional geometric interpretation of the SM fermions. Each (ℂ⊗Λ)(ℝ³) describes an electroweak doublet. The Dirac equation has a doubler-free staggered spatial discretization on the lattice space (Aff(3)⊗ℂ)(ℤ³). This space allows a simple physical interpretation as a phase space of a lattice of cells. We find the SM SU(3) _c ×SU(2) _L ×U(1) _Y action on (Aff(3)⊗ℂ⊗Λ)(ℝ³) to be a maximal anomaly-free gauge action preserving E(3) symmetry and symplectic structure, which can be constructed using two simple types of gauge-like lattice fields: Wilson gauge fields and correction terms for lattice deformations. The lattice fermion fields we propose to quantize as low energy states of a canonical quantum theory with ℤ₂-degenerated vacuum state. We construct anticommuting fermion operators for the resulting ℤ₂-valued (spin) field theory. A metric theory of gravity compatible with this model is presented too.
