Micro-scale behavior of granular materials during cyclic loading   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study presents the micro-scale behavior of granular materials under biaxial cyclic loading for differ- ent confining pressures using the two-dimensional (2D) discrete element method (DEM). Initially, 8450 ovals were generated in a rectangular frame without any overlap. Four dense samples having confining pressures of 15, 25, 50, and 100 kPa were prepared from the initially generated sparse sample. Numeri- cal simulations were performed under biaxial cyclic loading using these isotropically compressed dense samples. The numerical results depict stress-strain-dilatancy behavior that was similar to that observed in experimental studies. The relationship between the stress ratio and dilatancy rate is almost indepen- dent of confining pressures during loading but significantly dependent on the confining pressures during unloading. The evolution of the coordination number, effective coordination number and slip coordina- tion number depends on both the confining pressures and cyclic loading. The cyclic loading significantly affects the microtopology of the granular assembly. The contact fabric and the fabric-related anisotropy are reported, as well. A strong correlation between the stress ratio and the fabric related to contact normals is observed during cyclic loading, irrespective of confining pressures.  相似文献

This work proposes a model for granular deformation that predicts the stress and velocity profiles in well-developed dense granular flows. Recent models for granular elasticity [Jiang, Y., Liu, M., 2003. Granular elasticity without the Coulomb condition. Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 144301] and rate-sensitive fluid-like flow [Jop, P., Forterre, Y., Pouliquen, O., 2006. A constitutive law for dense granular flows. Nature 441, 727] are reformulated and combined into one universal elasto-plastic law, capable of predicting flowing regions and stagnant zones simultaneously in any arbitrary 3D flow geometry. The unification is performed by justifying and implementing a Kröner–Lee decomposition, with care taken to ensure certain continuum physical principles are necessarily upheld. The model is then numerically implemented in multiple geometries and results are compared to experiments and discrete simulations.  相似文献

We study the shearing flow of granular materials between two horizontal flat plates where the top plate is moving with a constant speed. The constitutive relation used for the stress is based on the continuum model proposed by Rajagopal and Massoudi (DOE Report, DOE/PETC/TR-90/3, 1990). The material coefficients such as viscosity and normal stress coefficients are based on the model of Boyle and Massoudi (Int. J. Eng. Sci 28 (1990) 1261). The governing equations are non-dimensionalized and the resulting system of non-linear differential equations is solved numerically using finite difference technique.  相似文献

The relationship between critical state and particle shape corresponds to the most fundamental aspect of the mechanics of granular materials. This paper presents an investigation into this relationship through macro-scale and micro-scale laboratory experiments in conjunction with interpretation and analysis in the framework of critical state soil mechanics. Spherical glass beads and crushed angular glass beads of different percentages were mixed with a uniform quartz sand (Fujian sand) to create a sequence of mixtures with varying particle shape. On the micro-scale, particle shape was accurately measured using a laser scanning technique, and was characterized by aspect ratio, sphericity and convexity; a new shape index, taken as the average of the three shape measures and referred to as overall regularity, was proposed to provide a collective characterization of particle shape. On the macro-scale, both undrained and drained triaxial tests were carried out to provide evidence that varying particle shape can alter the overall response as well as the critical states in both stress space and volumetric compression space. The mixtures of Fujian sand and spherical glass beads were found to be markedly more susceptible to liquefaction than the mixtures of Fujian sand and crushed angular glass beads. The change in liquefaction susceptibility was shown to be consistent with the change in the position of the critical state locus (CSL) in the compression space, manifested by a decrease in the intercept and gradient of the CSL due to the presence of spherical glass beads. Quantitative relationships have been established between each of the critical state parameters and each of the shape parameters, thereby providing a way to construct macro-scale constitutive models with intrinsic micro-scale properties built in.  相似文献

In this paper, the conditions of solution existence for stress rates under given strain rates are investigated. The focus of the solution existence investigation is on the non-associated flow rule and elastic stress–strain relationship. Granular materials characterized with strong non-associated plastic flows are used as a particular example for analysis. Various flow rules for granular materials are analyzed, including Rowe’s, Roscoe’s flow rules and their modified versions. In the elastic stress–strain relationships of materials, the effects of Poisson’s ratio on solution existence are investigated. Both isotropic and anisotropic elasticity are considered. Given a granular material and its states, it is found that there exists a critical Poisson’s ratio for a particular non-associated flow rule. When the Poisson’s ratio of a material is above this critical Poisson’s ratio, its constitutive model is susceptible to solution non-existence. It is suggested that special attentions should be paid to the selection of material Poisson’s ratio and non-associated flow rule to ensure the existence of elastoplastic solutions.  相似文献

A micromechanical theory is formulated for quasi-static deformation of granular materials, which is based on information theory. A reasoning is presented that leads to the definition of an information entropy that is appropriate for quasi-static deformation of granular materials. This definition is based on the hypothesis that relative displacements at contacts with similar orientations are independent realisations of a random variable. This hypothesis is made plausible based on the results of Discrete Element simulations. The developed theory is then used to predict the elastic behaviour of granular materials in terms of micromechanical quantities. The case considered is that of two-dimensional assemblies consisting of non-rotating particles with an elastic contact constitutive relation. Applications of this case are the initial elastic (small-strain) deformation of granular materials. Theoretical results for the elastic moduli, relative displacements, energy distribution and probability density functions are compared with results obtained from the Discrete Element simulations for isotropic assemblies with various average numbers of contacts per particle and various ratios of tangential to normal contact stiffness. This comparison shows that the developed information theory is valid for loose systems, while a theory based on the uniform-strain assumption is appropriate for dense systems.  相似文献

The tendency of particles in a water-saturated granular mass to re-arrange into a denser state during cyclic shearing under pressure results in an increase in pore water pressure. The increase in the pore water pressure causes a reduction in the inner particle contact forces, and in turn easier re-arrangement of the particles. Eventually, the material loses its shear strength, partially or almost completely. In this paper, a general three-dimensional continuum mechanics model is presented for the deformation of granular materials. A physically based model is also presented for characterization of liquefaction of the water saturated granular material under undrained cyclic shearing. The model incorporates the fabric of the granular mass, which develops as the frictional granular mass is deformed in shear. It includes the coupling between shearing and excess pore water pressure. The model parameters are estimated, based on the results of cyclic shearing experiments on large hollow cylindrical samples of silica sand. Basically, the calculation results utilizing this model can embody liquefaction phenomena of the water saturated granular material under undrained cyclic shearing.  相似文献

The flow of granular materials between rotating cylinders is studied using a continuum model proposed by Rajagopal and Massoudi (A method for measuring material moduli for granular materials: flow in an orthogonal rheometer, DOE/PETC/TR90/3, 1990). For a steady, fully developed condition, the governing equations are reduced to a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations. The resulting boundary value problem is non-dimensionalized and is then solved numerically. The effect of material parameters, i.e., dimensionless numbers on the volume fraction and the velocity fields are studied.  相似文献

Constitutive equations for class of materials that possess granular microstructure can be effectively derived using granular micromechanics approach. The stress–strain behavior of such materials depends upon the underlying grain scale mechanisms that are modeled by using appropriate rate-dependent inter-granular force–displacement relationships. These force–displacement functions are nonlinear and implicit evolutions equations. The numerical solution of such equation under applied overall stress or strain loading can entail significant computational expense. To address the computations issue, an efficient explicit time-integration scheme has been derived. The developed model is then utilized to predict primary, secondary and tertiary creep as well as rate-dependent response under tensile and compressive loads for hot mix asphalt. Further, the capability of the derived model to describe multi-axial behavior is demonstrated through generations of biaxial time-to-creep failure envelopes and rate-dependent failure envelopes under monotonic biaxial and triaxial loading. The advantage of the approach presented here is that we can predict the multi-axial effects without resorting to complex phenomenological modeling.  相似文献

The compression of granular materials has been traditionally modelled with the limitations of classical elasto-plasticity. The energy was implicitly assumed to dissipate from the frictional interaction of particles. However, the fact that brittle granular materials crush suggests that energy must also be dissipated from the fracturing of the grains, as in fracture mechanics. The concept of breakage as a thermomechanical internal variable was introduced in Part I [Einav, I., 2006. Breakage mechanics—Part I: theory. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 00,000-000] to describe the fracturing mechanisms. The theory allows to treat ideal theoretical materials that undergo dissipation purely from breakage with no other mechanism allowed for the energy consumption. However, as accounted for in elasto-plasticity, dissipation must also occur from the frictional rearrangement of grains. The combination of the two dissipative mechanisms of breakage and plasticity must therefore be investigated, as we do in this paper. Those two mechanisms are generally coupled, in the sense that one inevitably appears when the other develops. Plastic dissipation emerges as a by-product of breakage dissipation because after grains crush, local rearrangement must occur. This scenario may be termed an ‘active breakage mechanism’, and typifies compression deformations. In shear the plastic dissipation is dominant but breakage appears inevitably from grains abrasion. This scenario may be called a ‘passive breakage mechanism’. Based on the coupling assumption, models are developed for granular materials. In particular, we show that in compression isotropic hardening of sands may appear without involving plastic strains, i.e., independent of frictional dissipation. This interpretation of hardening is different from the one used in classical critical state soil mechanics. However, frictional dissipation leads to plastic straining that are necessary for the models to be predictive in unloading.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study is to clarify both the compression phenomenon and the gas filtration effect that take place inside a granular medium when it is dynamically loaded by a shock wave. In order to measure the pore pressure and the total stress at different locations along the granular medium, pressure transducers were placed along the side-wall and at the end-wall of the shock tube test section, which was filled with the granular material. In order to elucidate the gas filtration effect, the results of two experiments with identical granular media but with and without filtration were compared. The gas filtration was eliminated by means of a thin plastic film, which was placed at the front edge of the granular medium. Based on this comparison quantitative information on the gas filtration and its role in the stress formation inside granular media of different material and length was obtained. Furthermore, curves of the dynamic compression and the Young moduli of the granular medium for the range of the operating conditions were reconstructed.  相似文献

Thermoelastic behavior of functionally graded particulate materials is investigated with a micromechanical approach. Based on a special representative volume element constructed to represent the graded microstructure of a macroscopic material point, the relation between the averaged strains of the particle and matrix phases is derived with pair-wise particle interactions, and a set of governing equations for the thermoelastic behavior of functionally graded materials is presented. The effective coefficient of thermal expansion at a material point is solved through the overall averaged strain of two phases induced by temperature change under the stress-free condition, and is shown to exhibit a weak anisotropy due to the particle interactions within the graded microstructure. When the material gradient is eliminated, the proposed model predicts the effective coefficient of thermal expansion for uniform composites as expected. If the particle interactions are disregarded, the proposed model recovers the Kerner model. The proposed semi-analytical scheme is consistent and general, and can handle any thermal loading variation. As examples, the thermal stress distributions of graded thermal barrier coatings are solved for two types of thermal loading: uniform temperature change and steady-state heat conduction in the gradation direction.  相似文献

In recent years a discussion could be followed where the pros and cons of the applicability of the Cosserat continuum model to granular materials were debated [Bardet, J.P., Vardoulakis, I., 2001. The asymmetry of stress in granular media. Int. J. Solids Struct. 38, 353–367; Kruyt, N.P., 2003. Static and kinematics of discrete Cosserat-type granular materials. Int. J. On virtual work and stress in granular media. Int. J. Solids Struct. 42, 3773–3793]. The authors follow closely this debate and try, with this paper, to provide a platform where the various viewpoints could find their position. We consider an ensemble of rigid, arbitrarily shaped grains as a set with structure. We establish a basic mathematical framework which allows to express the balance laws and the action–reaction laws for the discrete system in a “global” form, through the concepts of “part”, “granular surface”, “separately additive function” and “flux”. The independent variable in the balance laws is then the arbitrary part of the assembly rather than the single grain. A parallel framework is constructed for Cosserat continua, by applying the axiomatics established by [Noll, W., 1959. The foundation of classical mechanics in the light of recent advances in continuum mechanics. In: The axiomatic method, with special reference to Geometry and Physics, North-Holland Publishing Co., Amsterdam pp. 266–281, Gurtin, M.E., Williams, W.O., 1967. An axiomatic foundation of continuum thermodynamics. Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 26, 83–117, Gurtin, M.E., Martins, L.C., 1976. Cauchy’s theorem in classical physics. Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 60, 305–324]. The comparison between the two realisations suggests the microscopic interpretation for some features of Cosserat Mechanics, among which the asymmetry of the Cauchy-stress tensor and the couple-stress.  相似文献

Analysis of instantaneous dynamic states of vibrated granular materials   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The behavior of granular materials subjected to continuous vertical vibrations is dependent on a variety of factors, including how energetically the containment vessel is shaken as well as particle properties. Motivation for the investigation reported here is based on phenomenon in which bulk solids attain an increase in density upon relaxation. The results of a detailed, discrete element study designed to examine the dynamic state of a granular material is presented, in which particles are represented as inelastic, frictional spheres. The phase in which the assembly finds itself immediately before vibrations are stopped is quantified by computing depth profiles of the translational energy ratio R in conjunction with profiles of solids fraction ν and granular temperature T. The use of particles that are more frictional tends to hinder or delay thermalization, while particle restitution coefficient plays a role when the flow is collision dominated. The structure before vibrations are applied plays an important role in determining the depth profiles and the phase pattern only at low accelerations. On the other hand, large accelerations can easily dislodge the poured configuration very quickly so that the initial condition is not major factor in the phase pattern.  相似文献

An extended gradient elastoplastic constitutive equation is formulated, which is capable of describing the plastic strain rate due to the rate of stress inside the yield surface and the inelastic strain rate due to the stress rate component tangential to the subloading surface by incorporating the tangential-subloading surface model. Based on the extended constitutive equation, the post-localization analysis of granular materials is performed to predict the shear-band thickness. It is revealed that the shear-band thickness is almost determined by the gradient coefficient characterizing the inhomogeneity of deformation, although the stress–strain curve is strongly dependent on material properties.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the formulation of a micromechanics-based constitutive model for granular materials under relatively low confining pressure. The constitutive formulation is performed within the general framework of homogenization for granular materials. However, new rigorous stress localization laws are proposed. Some local constitutive relations are established under the consideration of irreversible thermodynamics. Macroscopic plastic deformation is obtained by considering local plastic sliding in a limit number of families of contact planes. The plastic sliding at each contact plane is described by a non-associated plastic flow rule, taking into account pressure sensitivity and normal dilatancy. Nonlinear elastic deformation related to progressive compaction of contacts is also taken into account. Material softening is described by involving damage process related to degradation of microstructure fabric. The proposed model is applied to some typical granular materials (sands). The numerical predictions are compared with experimental data.  相似文献

Stress evolution in a dense granular material is closely related to interactions of contacting particles. We investigate statistics related to particle interactions and the relationship between the averaged local relative motion and the macroscopic motion. The validity of the Voigt and Reuss assumptions is examined, and extensions to these assumptions are proposed. Effects of history in the dense granular material are investigated. Statistical samples used in this paper are obtained using three-dimensional numerical simulations of dense granular media under uniaxial cyclical compression. The results show that stresses arise mostly from normal forces between particles, and direct contributions from frictional tangential forces between particles are small. Tangential friction, however, significantly increases the particle contact time, and thus reduces the rate of contact breakage. The contact breakage rate is demonstrated to be a stress relaxation rate. Therefore, stress increases significantly with friction between particles as a result of prolonged relaxation time.  相似文献
