The shear compression specimen (SCS), which is used for large strain testing, is thoroughly investigated numerically using three-dimensional elastoplastic finite element simulations. In this first part of the study we address quasi-static loading. A bi-linear material model is assumed. We investigate the effect of geometrical parameters, such as gage height and root radius, on the stress and strain distribution and concentration. The analyses show that the stresses and strains are reasonably uniform on a typical gage mid-section, and their average values reflect accurately the prescribed material model. We derive accurate correlations between the averaged von Mises stress and strain and the applied experimental load and displacement. These relations depend on the specimen geometry and the material properties. Numerical results are compared to experimental data, and an excellent agreement is observed. This study confirms the potential of the SCS for large strain testing of material.  相似文献

The logarithmic or Hencky strain measure is a favored measure of strain due to its remarkable properties in large deformation problems. Compared with other strain measures, e.g., the commonly used Green-Lagrange measure, logarithmic strain is a more physical measure of strain. In this paper, we present a Hencky-based phenomenological finite strain kinematic hardening, non-associated constitutive model, developed within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics with internal variables. The derivation is based on the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into elastic and inelastic parts, and on the use of the isotropic property of the Helmholtz strain energy function. We also use the fact that the corotational rate of the Eulerian Hencky strain associated with the so-called logarithmic spin is equal to the strain rate tensor (symmetric part of the velocity gradient tensor). Satisfying the second law of thermodynamics in the Clausius-Duhem inequality form, we derive a thermodynamically-consistent constitutive model in a Lagrangian form. In comparison with the available finite strain models in which the unsymmetric Mandel stress appears in the equations, the proposed constitutive model includes only symmetric variables. Introducing a logarithmic mapping, we also present an appropriate form of the proposed constitutive equations in the time-discrete frame. We then apply the developed constitutive model to shape memory alloys and propose a well-defined, non-singular definition for model variables. In addition, we present a nucleation-completion condition in constructing the solution algorithm. We finally solve several boundary value problems to demonstrate the proposed model features as well as the numerical counterpart capabilities.  相似文献

A direct, natural extension of Hooke’s law to finite strain was achieved by R. Hill in 1978, employing the notion of work-conjugate measures of stress and strain. With Seth-Hill (Doyle-Ericksen) class of finite strain measures, this extension actually defines a broad class of compressible hyperelastic materials at finite strain, each of which retains the simple linear structure of Hooke’s law as stress–strain relationship. Several known simple elasticity models at finite strain are included as its particular examples. With a novel idea of utilizing a suitable parametric variable, here we present a unified study of the free-end torsion problem (Poynting effects) of thin-walled cylindrical tubes made of the foregoing Hill’s class of Hookean type hyperelastic materials. We show that it is possible to derive a unified exact solution to the nonlinear coupling equations relating the torque (the shear stress) and the controlling deformation quantities including, in particular, the axial length change. Discussions and comparisons concerning various Hookean type elasticity models are made based on the exact solution obtained.  相似文献

A plasticity model using a vertex-type plastic flow rule on a smooth yield surface for an anisotropic solid has been proposed recently. This model is here completed by incorporating the effect of plastic spin. Simple shear with a large shear strain is one of the hardest tests on finite strain anisotropic plasticity models, and it is here shown which plastic spin expression is needed to avoid unrealistic oscillatory behavior of the shear stress under large shear strains. The idea of using non-normality with a smooth yield surface originates from a recent proposal of using an abrupt strain path change to determine the subsequent yield surface shape. For this method both polycrystal plasticity calculations and experiments have shown a vertex-type response on the apparently smooth yield surface.  相似文献

A shear-compression specimen for large strain testing   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A new specimen geometry, the shear-compression specimen (SCS), has been developed for large strain testing of materials. The specimen consists of a cylinder in which two diametrically opposed slots are machined at 45° with respect to the longitudinal axis, thus forming the test gage section. The specimen was analyzed numerically for two representative material models, and various gage geometries. This study shows that the stress (strain) state in the gage, is three-dimensional rather than simple shear as would be commonly assumed. Yet, the dominant deformation mode in the gage section is shear, and the stresses and strains are rather uniform. Simple relations were developed and assessed to relate the equivalent true stress and equivalent true plastic strain to the applied loads and displacements. The specimen was further validated through experiments carried out on OFHC copper, by comparing results obtained with the SCS to those obtained with compression cylinders. The SCS allows to investigate a large range of strain rates, from the quasi-static regime, through intermediate strain rates (1–100 s−1), up to very high strain rates (2×104s−1 in the present case).  相似文献

A series of experiments has been conducted on oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper hollow cylinders under cyclic free-end torsion and biaxial tension–torsion at large strains. In addition, equations are developed to account for the finite rotation and strains in electrical resistance strain gages. In free-end cyclic torsion experiments with shear strain range equal to 23%, a significant strain in the axial direction is observed and it accumulates with a constant rate cycle by cycle. In the biaxial tension–torsion (multiaxial ratchetting) experiments, in which the primary (constant) axial stress is larger than the initial yield stress of the material, the loading conditions are varied to determine the influence of primary axial stress, cyclic shear strain range, pre-cyclic hardening and loading sequence on multiaxial ratchetting. Some important experimental features are high-lighted and recommended to help modeling efforts later.  相似文献

Initiation and development of shear band (SB) in f.c.c. strain hardening polycrystals during rolling are modelled in terms of crystallographic texture. The constitutive law of the material is expressed in terms of the texture-dependent normalized yield surface and the critical shear stress which evolves with strain. The normalized yield surface is predicted by the Taylor model as a function of rolling texture. It is shown that a rounded vertex (RV) develops at the loading point as the rolling texture becomes more and more marked. A detailed characterization of the RV is carried out. It is found that the normalized curvature radius of the RV decreases from unity towards zero at very large strain. This allows for a small stress perturbation to induce a shear strain perturbation with a large orientation deviation of deformation. By linearized stability analysis, the condition for initiation of SB from the shear strain perturbation is obtained. Development of SB is analysed by solving the established governing equations of shear banding. It is shown that the conditions for SB initiation and saturation of shear localisation depend strongly on the texture. Based on this model problem, a long discussion is carried out which allows a better understanding of the basic physical origin and saturation of SB in strain-hardening polycrystals, as well as the effects of yield surface curvature and yield surface rotation whose general form is derived.

The effects of strain rate dependency and inelasticity on the transient responses of composite laminated plates are investigated. A micromechanics model which accounts for the transverse shear stress effect, the effect of strain rate dependency and the effect of inelasticity is used for analyzing the mechanical responses of the fiber and matrix constituents. The accuracy of the micromechanics model under transverse shear loading is verified by comparing the results with those obtained using a general purpose finite element code. A higher order laminated plate theory is extended to capture the inelastic deformations of the composite plate and is implemented using the finite element technique. A complete micro–macro numerical procedure is developed to model the strain rate dependent behavior of inelastic composite laminates by implementing the micromechanics model into the finite element model. Parametric studies of the transient responses of composite plates are conduced. The effects of geometry, ply stacking sequence, material models, boundary conditions and loadings are investigated. The results show that the strain rate dependency and inelasticity influence the transient responses of composite plates via two significantly different mechanisms.  相似文献

In this study, effects of typical texture components observed in rolled aluminum alloy sheets on shear band formation in plane strain tension/compression and bending are systematically studied. The material response is described by a generalized Taylor-type polycrystal model, in which each grain is characterized in terms of an elastic–viscoplastic continuum slip constitutive relation. First, a simple model analysis in which the shear band is assumed to occur in a weaker thin slice of material is performed. From this simple model analysis, two important quantities regarding shear band formation are obtained: i.e. the critical strain at the onset of shear banding and the corresponding orientation of shear band. Second, the shear band development in plane strain tension/compression is analyzed by the finite element method. Predictability of the finite element analysis is compared to that of the simple model analysis. Third, shear band developments in plane strain pure bending of a sheet specimen with the typical textures are studied. Regions near the surfaces in a bent sheet specimen are approximately subjected to plane strain tension or compression. From this viewpoint, the bendability of a sheet specimen may be evaluated, using the knowledge regarding shear band formation in plane strain tension/compression. To confirm this and to encompass overall deformation of a bent sheet specimen, including shear bands, finite element analyses of plane strain pure bending are carried out, and the predicted shear band formation in bent specimens is compared to that in the tension/compression problem. Finally, the present results are compared to previous related studies, and the efficiency of the present method for materials design in future is discussed.  相似文献

A coupled temperature and strain rate microstructure physically based yield function is proposed in this work. It is incorporated along with the Clausius–Duhem inequality and an appropriate free energy definition in a general thermodynamic framework for deriving a three-dimensional kinematical model for thermo-viscoplastic deformations of body centered cubic (bcc) metals. The evolution equations are expressed in terms of the material time derivatives of the elastic strain, accumulated plastic strain (isotropic hardening), and the back stress conjugate tensor (kinematic hardening). The viscoplastic multipliers are obtained using both the Consistency and Perzyna viscoplasticity models. The athermal yield function is employed instead of the static yield function in the case of the Perzyna viscoplasticity model. It is found that the static strain rate value, at which the material shows rate-independent behavior, varies with the material deformation temperature. Computational aspects of the proposed model are addressed through the finite element implementation with an implicit stress integration algorithm. Finite element simulations are performed by implementing the proposed viscoplasticity constitutive models in the commercial finite element program ABAQUS/Explicit [ABAQUS, 2003. User Manual, Version 6.3. Habbitt, Karlsson and Sorensen Inc., Providence, RI] via the user material subroutine coded as VUMAT. Numerical implementation for a simple compression problem meshed with one element is used to validate the proposed model implementation with applications to tantalum, niobium, and vanadium at low and high strain rates and temperatures. The analysis of a tensile shear banding is also investigated to show the effectiveness and the performance of the proposed framework in describing the strain localizations at high velocity impact. Results show mesh independency as a result of the viscoplastic regularization used in the proposed formulation.  相似文献

The stability theories energetically associated with different finite strain measures are equivalent if the tangential moduli are transformed as a function of the stress. However, for homogenized soft-in-shear composites, they can differ greatly if the material is in small-strain and constant elastic moduli measured in small-strain tests are used. Only one theory can then be correct. The preceding variational energy analysis showed that, for sandwich columns and elastomeric bearings, respectively, the correct theories are Engesser’s and Haringx’s, associated with Green’s and Almansi’s Lagrangian strain tensors, respectively. This analysis is reviewed, along with supporting experimental and numerical results, and is then extended to arbitrary multiaxially loaded homogenized soft-in-shear orthotropic composites. It is found that, to allow the use of constant shear modulus when the material is in small strain, the correct stability theory is associated with a general Doyle–Ericksen finite strain tensor of exponent m depending on the principal stress ratio. Further it is shown that the standard updated Lagrangian algorithm for finite element analysis, which is associated with Green’s Lagrangian finite strain, can give grossly incorrect results for homogenized soft-in-shear structures and needs to be generalized for arbitrary finite strain measure to allow using constant shear modulus for critical loads at small strain.  相似文献

In this paper, a driving stress finite element method of elastic-plastic large deformation based on implicit time integrating algorithm and an eight-chain molecular network model is used for the numerical simulation of the simple shear test of polycarbonate (PC) materials. The simulated results are compared with experimental ones. The strain localization propagation for the shear band deformation for simple shear deformation is investigated numerically. The effects of microstructure parameters in the model on strain softening and orientation hardening of the PC are discussed in detail. Internal dissipation always occurs in irreversible inelastic deformation processes of materials. The internal dissipation inequalities (specific mathematical forms of the second law of thermodynamics) determine the evolution direction of inelastic processes. Based on different internal dissipation inequalities several finite strain inelastic constitutive laws have been formulated for instance by Simo [Simo, J.C., 1992. An extended Chaboche’s viscoplastic law at finite strains: theoretical and numerical aspects. Journal of Materials Science and Technology 21, 145–147]. These constitutive laws are consistent with the second law of thermodynamics. As the internal dissipation inequalities are described in different configurations or coordinate systems, the related constitutive laws are also formulated in the corresponding configurations or coordinate systems. Mathematically, these constitutive laws have very different formulations. Now, a question is whether the constitutive laws provide identical constitutive responses for the same inelastic constitutive problems. In the present work, four types of finite strain viscoelastic and endochronically plastic laws as well as three types of J2-plasticity laws are formulated based on four types of dissipation inequalities. Then, they are numerically compared for several problems of homogeneous or complex finite deformations. It is demonstrated that for the same inelastic constitutive problem the stress responses are identical for deformation processes without rotations. In the simple shear deformation process with large rotation, the presented viscoelastic and endochronically plastic laws also show almost identical stress responses up to a shear strain of about 100%. The three laws of J2-plasticity also produce the same shear stresses up to a shear strain of 100%, while different normal stresses are generated even at infinitesimal shear strains. The three J2-plasticity laws are also compared at three complex finite deformation processes: billet upsetting, cylinder necking and channel forming. For the first two deformation processes similar constitutive responses are obtained, whereas for the third deformation process (with large global rotations) significant differences of constitutive responses can be observed.  相似文献

From an internally consistent theory of finite strain plasticity in which are introduced a new stress tensor that includes rigid body rotation and a compatible finite strain tensor amenable to simple geometrical interpretation, a close correlation with experiment is obtained for stress paths of arbitrary composition and direction. Measured material constants are proportional to the elastic shear modulus, as indicated for dislocation theory. At large strain there exists a quantum mechanical structure for the continuum, in which are defined a series of relative reference configurations and second order transitions.  相似文献

This work is focused on the theoretical development and numerical implementation of a viscoplastic law. According to the second law of thermodynamics a dissipation inequality described in the rotated material coordinate system is developed. Based on this dissipation inequality and the principle of maximum dissipation a finite strain viscoplastic model described also in the rotated material coordinate system is formulated. The evolution equations are expressed in terms of the material time derivatives of the rotated elastic logarithmic strain, the accumulated plastic strain and the strain-like tensor conjugate to the rotated back stress. The mathematical structure of this theory is concise and similar to that of the infinitesimal viscoplastic theory. These characteristics make the numerical implementation of this theory easy. The stress integration algorithm and the algorithmic tangent moduli for the infinitesimal theory can be applied to the numerical implementation of the present finite strain theory with a little reformulation. The complicated algorithmic formulations for most of other finite plastic laws can be therefore circumvented. In order to check the effectivity of the present finite strain theory a set of numerical examples under strict deformation conditions are presented. These numerical examples prove the excellent performance of the present viscoplastic material law at describing the finite strain elastoplastic and viscoplastic problems.  相似文献

A plane strain mode I crack tip field with strain gradient effects is investigated. A new strain gradient theory is used. An elastic-power law hardening strain gradient material is considered and two hardening laws, i. e. a separation law and an integration law are used respectively. As for the material with the separation law hardening, the angular distributions of stresses are consistent with the HRR field, which differs from the stress results[19]; the angular distributions of couple stresses are the same as the couple stress results[19]. For the material with the integration law hardening, the stress field and the couple stress field can not exist simultaneously, which is the same as the conclusion[19], but for the stress dominated field, the angular distributions of stresses are consistent with the HRR field; for the couple stress dominated field, the angular distributions of couple stresses are consistent with those in Ref. [19]. However, the increase in stresses is not observed in strain gradient plasticity because the present theory is based on the rotation gradient of the deformation only, while the crack tip field of mode I is dominated by the tension gradient, which will be shown in another paper.
