The plane-strain crack subjected to mode I cyclic loading under small scale yielding was analysed. The influence of the load range, load ratio and overload on the near-tip deformation-, stress- and strain-fields was studied. Although the near-tip zones of appreciable cyclic plastic flow for all loading regimes matched closely one another, when scaled with (ΔK/σY)2, the activities of plastic flow within them manifested dependence on Kmax and Kmin, as well as on overload. Cyclic trajectories of the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) converged to stable self-similar loops of the sizes proportional to ΔK2 and positions in CTOD-K plane dependent on the maximum K along the whole loading route, including an overload. Computed near-tip deformation evidenced plastic crack advance, this way visualising of the Laird–Smith concept of fatigue cracking. This crack growth by blunting-resharpening accelerated with rising ΔK and was halted by an overload. Crack closure upon unloading had no place. The affinities were revealed between computed near-tip stress–strain variables and the experimental trends of the fatigue crack growth rate, such as its dependence on Kmax and Kmin (or ΔK and Kmax), and retardation by overload. Thus, the effects of loading parameters on fatigue cracking, hitherto associated with crack closure, are attributable to the stress–strain fields in front of it as the direct drives of the key fatigue constituents – damage accumulation and bond breaking.  相似文献

Hydrogen induced crack-tip plastic deformation has been known as the primary mechanism of hydrogen assisted cracking and stress corrosion cracking. It has been systematically shown that the same mechanism of environmentally assisted crack-tip dislocation emission causes hydrogen assisted cracking, stress corrosion cracking, and liquid metal embrittlement cracking. An embrittling chemical species has to reach a crack tip in order to accelerate crack growth. Very close to a sharp crack tip, surface diffusion is shown to be the dominant transport process of embrittling species for stage-II crack growth. The role of surface diffusion in stage II crack growth is analyzed. The constant cracking velocity is proportional to the surface diffusion coefficient of an embrittling species and inversely proportional to a length parameter, , which is related to the transport process upstream.Dislocation emission at a crack tip is driven by crack-tip resolved shear stress. Crack-tip resolved shear stress field is characterized by resolved shear stress intensity factor, KRSS·KRSS is defined, the procedure for its calculation outlined, and its applications to crack-tip dislocation emission and environmentally assisted cracking discussed.  相似文献

Dynamic photoelastic fringe recordings associated with rapid curved crack propagation, crack division and the interaction between moving cracks and elastic waves show global dynamic mixed-mode crack-tip fringe patterns. When analysed by means of K-determination procedures an ‘apparent’ dynamic mixed-mode ratio K2/K1 may be denned which turns out to be a function of the particular selection of measurement data points. This paper compares experimentally recorded fringe data with numerical results in an attempt to resolve the dynamic photoelastic mixed-mode crack problem.  相似文献

For crack growth along an interface between dissimilar materials the effect of combined modes I, II and III at the crack-tip is investigated. First, in order to highlight situations where crack growth is affected by a mode III contribution, examples of material configurations are discussed where mode III has an effect. Subsequently, the focus is on crack growth along an interface between an elastic-plastic solid and an elastic substrate. The analyses are carried out for conditions of small-scale yielding, with the fracture process at the interface represented by a cohesive zone model. Due to the mismatch of elastic properties across the interface the corresponding elastic solution has an oscillating stress singularity, and this solution is applied as boundary conditions on the outer edge of the region analyzed. For several combinations of modes I, II and III crack growth resistance curves are calculated numerically in order to determine the steady-state fracture toughness. For given values of KI and KII the minimum fracture toughness corresponds to KIII=0 in most of the range analyzed, but there is a range where the minimum occurs for a nonzero value of KIII.  相似文献

The premature contact of crack surfaces attributable to the near-tip plastic strains under cyclic loading, which is commonly referred to as plasticity-induced crack closure (PICC), has long been focused as supposedly controlling factor of fatigue crack growth (FCG). Nevertheless, when the plane-strain near-tip constraint is approached, PICC lacks of straightforward evidence, so that its significance in FCG, and even the very existence, remain debatable. To add insight into this matter, large-deformation elastoplastic simulations of plane-strain crack under constant amplitude load cycling at different load ranges and ratios, as well as with an overload, have been carried out. Performed modelling visualises the Laird-Smith conceptual mechanism of FCG by crack-tip blunting and re-sharpening. The simulations reproduce experimental trends of FCG concerning the roles of ΔK and overload, whilst PICC has not occurred yet. Near-tip deformation patterns discard the filling-in a crack with material stretched out of its plane in the wake behind the tip as the origin of PICC. Despite the absence of closure, load-deformation curves appear bent, which raises doubts about the trustworthiness of closure assessment from the compliance variation. This points out the ambiguities of PICC as a supposedly ubiquitous factor that controls FCG.  相似文献

An asymptotic crack-tip analysis of stress and strain fields is carried out for an antiplane shear crack (Mode III) based on a corner theory of plasticity. Because of the nonproportional loading history experienced by a material element near the crack tip in stable crack growth, classical flow theory may predict an overly stiff response of the elastic plastic solid, as is the case in plastic buckling problems. The corner theory used here accounts for this anomalous behavior. The results are compared with those of a similar analysis based on the J2 flow theory of plasticity.  相似文献

A solution for Model-I plane strain crack tip fields in a bi-linear elastic–plastic material is presented. The elastic–plastic Poisson's ratio is introduced to characterize the influence of elastic deformation on the near tip constraint. Attention is focused on the distribution of elastic/plastic strain energy in the sensitive region of the forward sector ahead of a crack tip. The present study shows that the elastic strain energy can be higher than the plastic strain energy in this sensitive sector while large amount of the plastic strain energy develops outside this sector around the crack tip. The effect of elastic deformation in this sensitive region on the structure of crack-tip fields is considerable and the assumption in some important solutions for crack-tip fields reported in literature that the elastic deformation is small and can be ignored is therefore not physically reasonable. Besides, finite element analysis is carried out to validate the analytical solution and good agreement between them is found. It is seen that the present solution with T-stress can properly describe the crack-tip fields under various constraints for different specimens and an analytical relation is established between the critical value of J-integral, Jc, and T-stress for elastic–plastic fracture.  相似文献

Steady-state quasi-static growth of a crack in the anti-plane shear mode through an elastic-plastic material is analyzed. The material is non-hardening and small-scale yielding conditions are assumed. The essential feature of the model is that the active plastic-zone is assumed to be a pair of discrete lines emanating from the crack tip out of the crack plane on which a suitable yield condition is satisfied. An exact solution is obtained for the plastic strain left in the wake of this active line plastic-zone. The extent of the plastic zone from the tip is determined to be 0.071 (kτ0)2 where k and τ0 are the remote elastic stress intensity factor and the shear flow stress, respectively, and it is found that 36% of the elastic energy flowing into the crack-tip region during growth is dissipated through plastic work and 64% is trapped as residual elastic energy in the plastic-zone wake.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a new criterion for mixed mode I-II crack initiation angles based on the characteristics of the plastic core region surrounding the crack tip. The shape and size of the plastic core region are thoroughly analyzed under different loading conditions and a new formulation for the non-dimensional variable radius of the core region is presented for mixed mode (KIKII) fracture. The proposed criterion states that the crack extends in the direction of the local or global minimum of the plastic core region boundary depending on the resultant stress state at the crack tip. The results show a well-defined correlation between the plastic core region characteristics and crack extension angles predicted by other criteria. The proposed criterion is formulated for various loading conditions and is compared with other available criteria against the limited available experimental data. It is shown that the proposed criterion provides a better agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

Cohesive zone failure models are widely used to simulate fatigue crack propagation under cyclic loading, but the model parameters are phenomenological and are not closely tied to the underlying micromechanics of the problem. In this paper, we will inversely extract the cohesive zone laws for fatigue crack growth in an elasto-plastic ductile solid using a field projection method (FPM), which projects the equivalent tractions and separations at the cohesive crack-tip from field information outside the process zone. In our small-scale yielding model, a single row of discrete voids is deployed directly ahead of a crack in an elasto-plastic medium subjected to cyclic mode I K-field loading. Damage accumulation under cyclic loading is captured by the growth of voids within the micro-voiding zone ahead of the crack, while the evolution of the cohesive zone law representing the micro-voiding zone is inversely extracted via the FPM. We show that the field-projected cohesive zone law captures the essential micromechanisms of fatigue crack growth in the ductile medium: from loading and unloading hysteresis caused by void growth and plastic hardening, to the softening damage locus associated with crack propagation via a void by void growth mechanism. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the FPM in obtaining a micromechanics-based cohesive zone law in-place of phenomenological models, which opens the way for a unified treatment of fatigue crack problems.  相似文献

An asymptotic analysis of the near-tip fields is given for transient crack propagation in an elastic-plastic material. The material is characterized by J2 flow theory together with a bilinear effective stress-strain curve. Both plane stress and plane strain conditions have been considered. Explicit results are given for the order of the crack-tip singularity, the angular position at which unloading occurs, and the angular variation of the near-tip stresses, all as functions of the crack-tip speed and the ratio of the slopes of the two portions of the bilinear stress-strain relation. It was found that the results are much more sensitive to the elastic-plastic constitutive relation than to the crack speed. This result is important for numerical analyses of dynamic crack propagation problems.  相似文献

A three-point bend fixture has been designed, fabricated, and utilized to demonstrate the feasibility of performing in-situ J-testing at ambient and elevated temperatures inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Using the three-point bend test technique, in-situ SEM J-testing has been performed to measure the crack mouth opening displacement and crack extension as a function of the applied load in order to generate J-R curves for Zircaloy-4 at 25°C and 316°C. Once the J-R curve is determined, an equivalent KJ-resistance (KJ-R) curve is computed on the basis of a relationship between the J-integral (J) and the stress intensity factor (K). The J-R and KJ-R curves of Zircaloy-4 exhibit a rising R-curve behavior, while the elastic K-R curve underestimates the fracture resistance of Zircaloy-4 once substantial crack extension has occurred. For the specimen dimensions considered, the J-R curves generated by in-situ SEM J-tests are not sensitive to the specimen geometry and measure the actual fracture resistance of the material. Furthermore, the onset of crack extension is dictated by the emission of one or more slipbands from the crack tip, and a change in the crack-tip displacement field, followed by void formation along the slipband, and linkage of the voids with the main crack.  相似文献

The feasibility of using acoustic-emission techniques for the characterization of fracture resistance in AISI 4340 and SA533B steels is examined. The critical value of J-integral (J IC ) is measured with a single small specimen (compact tension) loaded in the elastic-plastic range at room temperature. Initiation is detected during loading by acoustic emission. A new AE procedure for crack-growth monitoring in fracture-toughness specimens has been proposed. The possibility of discriminating AE signals from noncritical sources, such as void nucleation during crack-tip plastic deformation and signals from a growing crack, is discussed.  相似文献

Piezoelectric materials have widespread applications in modern technical areas such as mechatronics, smart structures or microsystem technology, where they serve as sensors or actuators. For the assessment of strength and reliability of piezoelectric structures under combined electrical and mechanical loading, the existence of cracklike defects plays an important role. Meanwhile, piezoelectric fracture mechanics has been established quite well, but its application to realistic crack configurations and loading situations in piezoelectric structures requires the use of numerical techniques as finite element methods (FEM) or boundary element methods (BEM). The aim of this paper is to review the state of the art of FEM to compute the coupled electromechanical boundary value problem of cracks in 2D and 3D piezoelectric structures under static and dynamic loading. In order to calculate the relevant fracture parameters very precisely and efficiently, the numerical treatment must account for the singularity of the mechanical and electrical fields at crack tips. The following specialized techniques are presented in detail (1) special singular crack tip elements, (2) determination of intensity factors K I K IV from near tip fields, (3) modified crack closure integral, (4) computation of the electromechanical J-integral, and (5) exploitation of interaction integrals. Special emphasis is devoted to a realistic modeling of the dielectric medium inside the crack, leading to specific electric crack face boundary conditions. The accuracy, efficiency, and applicability of these techniques are examined by various example problems and discussed with respect to their advantages and drawbacks for practical applications.  相似文献

Crack-tip blunting under tensile loads and re-sharpening of the crack-tip during unloading is one of the basic mechanisms for fatigue crack growth in ductile metals. Based on an elastic–perfectly plastic material model, crack growth computations have been continued up to 700 full cycles by using remeshing at several stages of the plastic deformation, with studies of the effect of overloads or compressive underloads. Recent published analyses for the first two cycles have shown folding of the crack surface in compression, leading to something that looks like striations. The influence of mesh refinement is used to study the possibility of this type of behaviour within the present method. Even with much refined meshes no indication of crack surface folding is found here.  相似文献

Plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) has been widely studied using numerical models. Different numerical parameters can be considered to quantify the opening level, namely one based on the analysis of contact stresses at minimum load. A modified version of this parameter is proposed here, based on nodal contact forces instead of contact stresses. The predictions were found to be similar to those obtained from the contact status of 2nd node behind crack tip. The PICCcontact parameter was also found to be very consistent and adequate for parametric studies of the influence of different physical parameters. The contributions to the opening stress intensity factor of different points along crack flank were found to strongly decrease with distance to crack tip. The cumulative Kopen between the crack tip and a distance of 0.1 mm was found to vary from 30% to 100%, increasing with stress ratio, R. Finally, a K solution was developed for punctual forces applied on crack flank and compared with a literature solution for infinite plates. A good agreement was found for plane strain state but significant differences of about 10% were found for plane stress state.  相似文献

The effect of material compressibility on the stress and strain fields for a mode-I crack propagating steadily in a power-law hardening material is investigated under plane strain conditions. The plastic deformation of materials is characterized by the J2 flow theory within the framework of isotropic hardening and infinitesimal displacement gradient. The asymptotic solutions developed by the present authors [Zhu, X.K., Hwang K.C., 2002. Dynamic crack-tip field for tensile cracks propagating in power-law hardening materials. International Journal of Fracture 115, 323–342] for incompressible hardening materials are extended in this work to the compressible hardening materials. The results show that all stresses, strains, and particle velocities in the asymptotic fields are fully continuous and bounded without elastic unloading near the dynamic crack tip. The stress field contains two free parameters σeq0 and s330 that cannot be determined in the asymptotic analysis, and can be determined from the full-field solutions. For the given values of σeq0 and s330, all field quantities around the crack tip are determined through numerical integration, and then the effects of the hardening exponent n, the Poisson ratio ν, and the crack growth speed M on the asymptotic fields are studied. The approximate behaviors of the proposed solutions are discussed in the limit of ν  0.5 or n  ∞.  相似文献

The near-tip field of a mode I crack growing steadily under plane strain conditions is studied. A key issue is whether strong discontinuities can propagate under dynamic conditions. Theories which impose rather restrictive assumptions on the structure of an admissible deformation path through a dynamically propagating discontinuity have been proposed recently. Asymptotic solutions for dynamic crack growth, based on such theories, do not contain any discontinuities. In the present work a broader family of deformation paths is considered and we show that a discontinuity can propagate dynamically without violating any of the mechanical constitutive relations of the material. The proposed theory for the propagation of strong discontinuities is corroborated by very detailed finite element calculations. The latter shows a plane of strong discontinuity emanating from the crack tip (with its normal pointing in the direction of crack advance) and moving with the tip. Elastic unloading ahead of and/or behind the plane of discontinuity and behind the crack tip have also been observed. The numerical investigation is performed within the framework of a boundary layer formulation whereby the remote loading is fully specified by the first two terms in the asymptotic solution of the elasto-dynamic crack tip field, characterized by K1, and T. It is shown that the family of near-tip fields, associated with a given crack speed, can be arranged into a one-parameter field based on a characteristic length, Lg, which scales with the smallest dimension of the plastic zone. This extends a previous result for quasi-static crack growth.  相似文献
