A criterion for the onset of deformation twinning (DT) is derived within the Peierls framework for dislocation emission from a crack tip due to Rice (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 40(2) (1992) 239). The critical stress intensity factor (SIF) is obtained for nucleation of a two-layer microtwin, which is taken to be a precursor to DT. The nucleation of the microtwin is controlled by the unstable twinning energyγut, a new material parameter identified in the analysis. γut plays the same role for DT as γus, the unstable stacking energy introduced by Rice, plays for dislocation emission. The competition between dislocation emission and DT at the crack tip is quantified by the twinning tendencyT defined as the ratio of the critical SIFs for dislocation nucleation and microtwin formation. DT is predicted when T>1 and dislocation emission when T<1. For the case where the external loading is proportional to a single load parameter, T is proportional to . The predictions of the criterion are compared with atomistic simulations for aluminum of Hai and Tadmor (Acta Mater. 51 (2003) 117) for a number of different crack configurations and loading modes. The criterion is found to be qualitatively exact for all cases, predicting the correct deformation mode and activated slip system. Quantitatively, the accuracy of the predicted nucleation loads varies from 5% to 56%. The sources of error are known and may be reduced by appropriate extensions to the model.  相似文献

Using Jaumann and Dienes rates of Euler stress in elastic-plastic constitutive equations of finite deformation, plane strain finite element analysis for a compact tension specimen with a blunted crack front is made. The Euler stress, Kirchhoff stress and volume strain energy density near a blunted crack tip are computed. Constitutive relations with different deformation rates affect the the near crack tip solution in a region within an order of magnitude of the crack opening displacement. The results differed from the corresponding solution of deformation plasticity (or nonlinear elasticity) with increasing deformation. They are smaller in a local region of about 2 to 10 times of the crack opening distance. The volume energy density near the crack tip is computed, the stationary values of which determine the locations of extensive yielding and possible sites of crack initiation. It remained nearly constant with increasing deformation. Such a character tends to support the volume energy density criterion as a means for quantifying the ductile fracture behavior of metals.  相似文献

Considered is the tandem emission of dislocations and dislocation dipoles from a crack under in-plane shear in one slip system as well as multiple slip systems. Effective stress intensity factors are determined by considering zones of local distortion similar to that in macro-plasticity. The dislocation free zone (DFZ) is also obtained which is analogous to the core region in fracture mechanics. Studied are effects of dislocation emission or development of plastic zone in front of the crack tip on the potential crack propagation based on the strain energy density factor criterion.  相似文献

The quasicontinuum (QC) multiscale method is used to investigate anisotropic fracture behaviors of body-centered cubic (BCC) rare metal tantalum (Ta) loaded in Mode I and different fracture mechanisms are discussed from nanoscopic to continuum perspectives to have a deep understanding of brittle and ductile fracture. Initial crack deflection, brittle fracture by cleaving along low surface energy plane, ductile fracture as a result of dislocation emission and fracture accompanied by deformation twinning are all observed near crack tips of different crystal orientations. Particularly, some of these fracture mechanisms are found to be consistent with the latest experimental results. By examining different fracture behaviors, we find the surface energy and the available slip planes play a combined role in determining the fracture mechanisms near a crack tip. Both isotropic and anisotropic critical stress intensity factors are derived and compared for different crack orientations. A straightforward criterion that is proved to be applicable is used to distinguish brittle fracture from ductile fracture.  相似文献

A traction-displacement relationship that may be embedded into a cohesive zone model for microscale problems of intergranular fracture is extracted from atomistic molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. An MD model for crack propagation under steady-state conditions is developed to analyze intergranular fracture along a flat Σ99 [1 1 0] symmetric tilt grain boundary in aluminum. Under hydrostatic tensile load, the simulation reveals asymmetric crack propagation in the two opposite directions along the grain boundary. In one direction, the crack propagates in a brittle manner by cleavage with very little or no dislocation emission, and in the other direction, the propagation is ductile through the mechanism of deformation twinning. This behavior is consistent with the Rice criterion for cleavage vs. dislocation blunting transition at the crack tip. The preference for twinning to dislocation slip is in agreement with the predictions of the Tadmor and Hai criterion. A comparison with finite element calculations shows that while the stress field around the brittle crack tip follows the expected elastic solution for the given boundary conditions of the model, the stress field around the twinning crack tip has a strong plastic contribution. Through the definition of a Cohesive-Zone-Volume-Element—an atomistic analog to a continuum cohesive zone model element—the results from the MD simulation are recast to obtain an average continuum traction-displacement relationship to represent cohesive zone interaction along a characteristic length of the grain boundary interface for the cases of ductile and brittle decohesion.  相似文献

The dynamic propagation of a bifurcated crack under antiplane loading is considered. The dependence of the stress intensity factor just after branching is given as a function of the stress intensity factor just before branching, the branching angle and the instantaneous velocity of the crack tip. The jump in the dynamic energy release rate due to the branching process is also computed. Similar to the single crack case, a growth criterion for a branched crack is applied. It is based on the equality between the energy flux into each propagating tip and the surface energy which is added as a result of this propagation. It is shown that the minimum speed of the initial single crack which allows branching is equal to 0.39c, where c is the shear wave speed. At the branching threshold, the corresponding bifurcated cracks start their propagation at a vanishing speed with a branching angle of approximately 40°.  相似文献

Non-local theory solution for in-plane shear of through crack   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A non-local theory of elasticity is applied to obtain the plane strain stress and displacement field for a through crack under in-plane shear by using Schmidt's method. Unlike the classical elasticity solution, a lattice parameter enters into the problem that make the stresses finite at crack tip. Both the angular variations of the circumferential stress and strain energy density function are examined to associate their stationary value with locations of possible fracture initiation. The former criterion predicted a crack initiation angle of 54° from the plane of shear for the non-local solution as compared with about 75° for the classical elasticity solution. The latter criterion based on energy density yields a crack initiation angle of 80° for a Poisson's ratio of 0.28. This is much closer to the value that is predicted by the classical crack tips solution of elasticity.  相似文献

The quasicontinuum (QC) method is employed to simulate a nickel single crystal nano-plate with a mixed-mode crack. Atomic stresses near the crack tip are fitted according to the elastoplastic fracture mechanics equations. It is found that the atomic stress fields neighboring the crack tip are also singular and controlled by the atomic stress intensity factors. And then the critical energy release rates for brittle and ductile fracture are computed and compared in order to predict crack propagation or dislocation emission. Four possible slip directions at the crack tip are pointed out. Finally, the slip direction around the crack tip is determined by the shear stress and it is well consistent with the atomic pictures from the QC simulation.  相似文献

In situ tensile tests were made in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to investigate the deformation and micro-fracture in the immediate vicinity of a micro-crack tip in commercial pure aluminum with large-size crystal. Examined are the slip line field, stress intensity factor, strain energy density factor and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) for mixed mode loading. Blunting and sharpening effects are observed. The latter is controlled by localized slip while the former by uniformed slip of the operating slip system with the highest crack tip Schmid factor. The operating slip system depends on the crystallographic orientation of crystal containing micro-cracks.The damage and fracture take place in the blunted region and depend on the coarsening and spacing of uniformed slip lines. The mixed mode micro-crack propagates along the direction where the voids grow and coalesce into the micro-crack. The direction also depends on the orientation of the applied loading. This suggests that the formation of macro-fracture mechanics could be applied. In particular, the minimum strain energy density criterion is suitable for determining the direction of micro-crack instability in the mixed mode. The in situ data were used to yield a nearly constant critical, minimum strain energy density factor for onset of micro-cracking.  相似文献

Crack-extension resistance for the polycarbonate material is examined by application of the strain energy density criterion and the incremental theory of plasticity. The energy state ahead of a slow moving crack in a three-point bend specimen is obtained for each load increment and used to determine the crack growth characteristics. The analytical results are displayed by plotting the strain energy density factor S as a function of crack length and compared with available experimental data on the polycarbonate material. Standard deviations and mean errors are computed for the experimentally measured and analytically determined values of S and are shown to be much lower than those based on the J-integral parameter. Modeling of the polycarbonate material by the theory of plasticity still remains much to be desired. Crack growth calculations are performed for a strain hardening parameter α = 0.85 that controls the proportion of isotropic and kinematic hardening. Nevertheless, the criterion dS/da = const. is shown to collate well with the experimental crack growth data.  相似文献

Results from compact tension specimens and scanning electronic microscopy are used to study the fracture characteristics of nickel-base single crystal superalloy DD3. Finite element analyses are also made to better understand the outcome. The experiments showed that the initiation and growth of cracks were dependent on the crystallographic orientation of specimens, and the fracture surfaces coincided with the slip planes. Three-dimensional stresses near the crack tip are obtained. The strain energy density criterion is applied to predict the fracture of the superalloy. Agreement with experiments is good.  相似文献

This paper considers an anti-plane moving crack in a nonhomogeneous material strip of finite thickness. The shear modulus and the mass density of the strip are considered for a class of functional forms for which the equilibrium equation has analytical solutions. The problem is solved by means of the singular integral equation technique. The stress field near the crack tip is obtained. The results are plotted to show the effect of the material non-homogeneity and crack moving velocity on the crack tip field. Crack bifurcation behaviour is also discussed. The paper points out that use of an appropriate fracture criterion is essential for studying the stability of a moving crack in nonhomogeneous materials. The prediction whether the unstable crack growth will be enhanced or retarded is strongly dependent on the type of the fracture criterion used. Based on the analysis, it seems that the maximum 'anti-plane shear' stress around the crack tip is a suitable failure criterion for moving cracks in nonhomogeneous materials.  相似文献

Asymptotic singular solutions of the HRR type are presented for anti-plane shear cracks in ductile crystals. These are assumed to undergo Taylor hardening with a power-law relation between stress and strain at sufficiently large strain. Results are given for several crack orientations in fcc and bcc crystals. The neartip region divides into angular sectors which are the maps of successive flat segments and vertices on the yield locus. Analysis is simplified by use of new general integrals of crack tip singular fields of the HRR type. It is conjectured that the single crystal HRR fields are dominant only over part of the plastic region immediately adjacent to the crack tip, even at small scale yielding, and that their domain of validity vanishes as the perfectly plastic limit is approached. This follows from the fact that while in the perfectly plastic limit the HRR stress states approach the correct discontinuous distributions of the complete elasticideally plastic solutions for crystals (Rice and Nikolic, J. Mech. Phys. Solids33, 595 (1985)), the HRR displacement fields in that limit remain continuous. Instead, the complete elastic-ideally plastic solutions have discontinuous displacements along planar plastic regions emanating from the tip in otherwise elastically stressed material. The approach of the HRR stress fields to their discontinuous limiting distributions is illustrated in graphical plots of results. A case examined here of a fcc crystal with a crack along a slip plane is shown to lead to a discontinuous near-tip stress state even in the hardening regime.Through another limiting process, the asymptotic solution for the near-tip field for an isotropic material is also derived from the present single crystal framework.  相似文献

The high energy concentration at the tip of a running crack leads to irreversible deformations, and a great amount of the deformation energy is set free as heat. Assuming that this moving heat source is of circular shape, the temperature distribution around the crack tip has been calculated. The temperatures are dependent on the radius of the heat source and the crack velocity. Some examples for the material glass are given. The very high temperatures computed lead to the supposition that the observed light emission during fast fracture is of thermal origin.  相似文献

A computational model was developed to numerically analyse fatigue striations. The inclined strip yield model with continuous distributions of infinitesimal dislocations was utilized to express the crack tip plasticity in this model. The fatigue crack tip blunting process was approximated by sequential activation of two slip lines under loading, and crack closure during unloading was taken into account. The plastic zone at a growing fatigue crack tip at the maximum load was independent of the crack growth up to ten cycles while the reversed plastic zone decreased in a size to one twentieth of that at the maximum load as the crack grew. The ratio of these plastic zone sizes and also the crack tip opening displacement were quite different from the simple prediction by J.R. Rice for a stationary crack. The computed striation spacings were compared with the observed ones and moderate agreement between them obtained.  相似文献

Mode III impact of a crack in an orthotropic functionally graded strip is investigated. The shear moduli in two directions of the material are assumed to vary proportionately with gradient. Laplace transform and Fourier cosine transform are used to reduce the problem to solving a Fredholm integral equation. The crack tip stress field is obtained by considering the asymptotic behavior of Bessel function. Energy density factor criterion is applied to obtain the maximum of minimum energy density and direction of crack initiation. Numerical results are given graphically. The effects of orthotropy, nonhomogeneity and height of the strip on the energy density factor are discussed.  相似文献
