Naval sonar systems produce signals which may affect the behavior of harbor porpoises, though their effect may be reduced by ambient noise. To show how natural ambient noise influences the effect of sonar sweeps on porpoises, a porpoise in a pool was exposed to 1-s duration up-sweeps, similar in frequency range (6-7 kHz) to those of existing naval sonar systems. The sweep signals had randomly generated sweep intervals of 3-7 s (duty cycle: 19%). Behavioral parameters during exposure to signals were compared to those during baseline periods. The sessions were conducted under five background noise conditions: the local normal ambient noise and four conditions mimicking the spectra for wind-generated noise at Sea States 2-8. In all conditions, the sweeps caused the porpoise to swim further away from the transducer, surface more often, swim faster, and breathe more forcefully than during the baseline periods. However, the higher the background noise level, the smaller the effects of the sweeps on the surfacing behavior of the porpoise. Therefore, the effects of naval sonar systems on harbor porpoises are determined not only by the received level of the signals and the hearing sensitivity of the animals but also by the background noise.  相似文献

The distance at which active naval sonar signals can be heard by harbor porpoises depends, among other factors, on the hearing thresholds of the species for those signals. Therefore the hearing sensitivity of a harbor porpoise was determined for 1 s up-sweep and down-sweep signals, mimicking mid-frequency and low-frequency active sonar sweeps (MFAS, 6-7 kHz band; LFAS, 1-2 kHz band). The 1-2 kHz sweeps were also tested with harmonics, as sonars sometimes produce these as byproducts of the fundamental signal. The hearing thresholds for up-sweeps and down-sweeps within each sweep pair were similar. The 50% detection threshold sound pressure levels (broadband, averaged over the signal duration) of the 1-2 kHz and 6-7 kHz sweeps were 75 and 67 dB re 1 μPa(2), respectively. Harmonic deformation of the 1-2 kHz sweeps reduced the threshold to 59 dB re 1 μPa(2). This study shows that the presence of harmonics in sonar signals can increase the detectability of a signal by harbor porpoises, and that tonal audiograms may not accurately predict the audibility of sweeps. LFAS systems, when designed to produce signals without harmonics, can operate at higher source levels than MFAS systems, at similar audibility distances for porpoises.

The recent paper by Ona et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 121, EL145-EL150] compared avoidance reactions by herring (Clupea harengus) to a traditional and a "silent" research vessel. Surprisingly, the latter evoked the strongest avoidance, leading to the conclusion that "candidate stimuli for vessel avoidance remain obscure." In this Comment, it is emphasized that the otolith organs in fish are linear acceleration detectors with extreme sensitivity to infrasonic particle acceleration. Near-field particle motions generated by a moving hull are mainly in the infrasonic range, and infrasound is particularly potent in evoking directional avoidance responses in several species of fish. The stimuli initiating vessel avoidance may thus include infrasonic particle acceleration.  相似文献

Thresholds of ongoing interaural time difference (ITD) were obtained from normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners who had high-frequency, sensorineural hearing loss. Several stimuli (a 500-Hz sinusoid, a narrow-band noise centered at 500 Hz, a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated 4000-Hz tone, and a narrow-band noise centered at 4000 Hz) and two criteria [equal sound-pressure level (Eq SPL) and equal sensation level (Eq SL)] for determining the level of stimuli presented to each listener were employed. The ITD thresholds and slopes of the psychometric functions were elevated for hearing-impaired listeners for the two high-frequency stimuli in comparison to: the listener's own low-frequency thresholds; and data obtained from normal-hearing listeners for stimuli presented with Eq SPL interaurally. The two groups of listeners required similar ITDs to reach threshold when stimuli were presented at Eq SLs to each ear. For low-frequency stimuli, the ITD thresholds of the hearing-impaired listener were generally slightly greater than those obtained from the normal-hearing listeners. Whether these stimuli were presented at either Eq SPL or Eq SL did not differentially affect the ITD thresholds across groups.  相似文献

Behavior of herring (Clupea harengus) is stimulated by two ocean-going research vessels; respectively designed with and without regard to radiated-noise-standards. Both vessels generate a reaction pattern, but, contrary to expectations, the reaction initiated by the silent vessel is stronger and more prolonged than the one initiated by the conventional vessel. The recommendations from the scientific community on noise-reduced designs were motivated by the expectation of minimizing bias on survey results caused by vessel-induced fish behavior. In conclusion, the candidate stimuli for vessel avoidance remain obscure. Noise reduction might be necessary but is insufficient to obtain stealth vessel assets during surveys.  相似文献

There is concern that research vessels used in fish stock appraisals may have biased data due to fish avoidance reaction. One possible mechanism inducing this avoidance reaction is tonal noise. This paper assesses fish reaction to vessel noise on the basis of a detailed paper on the tonal auditory characteristics of cod [8]. Specifically, narrow band underwater radiated noise from certain research vessels, but mainly “R.V. Scotia”, is used to establish a cod reaction range. This is then compared to the calculated reaction range using a 1/3rd octave band assessment as set forward in International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Cooperative Research Report No. CRR 209. These comparisons were also carried out for another low-noise research vessel, namely “CEFAS Endeavour”.It is tentatively concluded from this paper that, based upon the “30 dB above hearing threshold” criterion, vessel tonality is not a strong mechanism for fish reaction to the low-noise ICES compliant vessels. However, it should be appreciated that this generalisation is based upon one (sensitive) specific species of fish and two specific research vessels. It is considered that further analysis should be carried out on other commercially important, but noise-sensitive fish, such as herring. Also, narrow band underwater noise should be investigated for other fisheries research vessels – ideally including those where strong fish reactions have been observed viz. G.O. Sars and Oscar Dyson. It should also be noted that, in this paper, each tone has been considered separately from all others; whereas, in reality, vessel noise is rich in tones and harmonics. This paper has attempted to separate out the tonal audibility aspect from the general issue of vessel broadband radiated noise by solely looking at the tonal level above the spectrum level to gain some insight into the importance of this issue.Comments are also made on various issues including masking noise, very low frequency tonal noise and the associated issue of particle acceleration sensitivity for cod.  相似文献

One goal of fisheries acoustics is to develop objective classification or identification methods to automate allocation of acoustic backscatter to species. Classification schemes rely on consistent relationships for successful apportionment of acoustic backscatter to species. A method is developed that compares frequency-dependent volume backscatter from an acoustical survey of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) to investigate the potential for classifying herring. Predicted backscattering patterns by a Kirchhoff-ray approximation are used to explain the observed relationships and evaluate the potential for classification of multi-frequency data. Combining predicted backscatter with observations of the frequency-dependent volume backscatter gave approximately 40% classification success, which is not sufficient for survey purposes. However, this method highlighted potential consequences that fish orientation may have on classification schemes and density and abundance estimates. This method of comparing multi-frequency volume backscatter appears to be beneficial for detecting behavioral changes by groups of fish, which may be used to select target strength values for density or abundance estimates. Utilizing predicted target strengths from numerical or analytical solutions or approximations, appropriate target strengths could be selected and would provide more accurate estimates of fish density and abundance.  相似文献

Amplitude modulation is an important parameter defining vertebrate acoustic communication signals. Nesting male plainfin midshipman fish, Porichthys notatus, emit simple, long duration hums in which modulation is strikingly absent. Envelope modulation is, however, introduced when the hums of adjacent males overlap to produce acoustic beats. Hums attract gravid females and can be mimicked with continuous tones at the fundamental frequency. While individual hums have flat envelopes, other midshipman signals are amplitude modulated. This study used one-choice playback tests with gravid females to examine the role of envelope modulation in hum recognition. Various pulse train and two-tone beat stimuli resembling natural communication signals were presented individually, and the responses compared to those for continuous pure tones. The effectiveness of pulse trains was graded and depended upon both pulse duration and the ratio of pulse to gap length. Midshipman were sensitive to beat modulations from 0.5 to 10 Hz, with fewer fish approaching the beat than the pure tone. Reducing the degree of modulation increased the effectiveness of beat stimuli. Hence, the lack of modulation in the midshipman's advertisement call corresponds to the importance of envelope modulation for the categorization of communication signals even in this relatively simple system.

Measurement of acoustic backscattering properties of targets requires removal of the range dependence of echoes. This process is called range compensation. For conventional sonars making measurements in the transducer farfield, the compensation removes effects of geometrical spreading and absorption. For parametric sonars consisting of a parametric acoustic transmitter and a conventional-sonar receiver, two additional range dependences require compensation when making measurements in the nonlinearly generated difference-frequency nearfield: an apparently increasing source level and a changing beamwidth. General expressions are derived for range compensation functions in the difference-frequency nearfield of parametric sonars. These are evaluated numerically for a parametric sonar whose difference-frequency band, effectively 1-6?kHz, is being used to observe Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) in situ. Range compensation functions for this sonar are compared with corresponding functions for conventional sonars for the cases of single and multiple scatterers. Dependences of these range compensation functions on the parametric sonar transducer shape, size, acoustic power density, and hydrography are investigated. Parametric range compensation functions, when applied with calibration data, will enable difference-frequency echoes to be expressed in physical units of volume backscattering, and backscattering spectra, including fish-swimbladder-resonances, to be analyzed.  相似文献

The results of experimental investigations of acoustic activity of schooling physostomous fish are discussed, made with reference to chum salmon, pink salmon, Pacific herring, and sardine. Dynamic spectra of most investigated fish are concentrated within two subranges of frequency, according to each investigated fish species. Direct participation of the swimming bladder in sound formation in the investigated fish is shown. Morphological traits of sound-producing organs of salmons and herrings are considered. Mechanisms of generation of signals in physotmous fish involving the muscular sphincter and swimming bladder are analyzed.  相似文献

Previous research with speechlike signals has suggested that upward spread of masking from the first formant (F 1) may interfere with the identification of place of articulation information signaled by changes in the upper formants. This suggestion was tested by presenting two-formant stop consonant--vowel syllables varying along a/ba--/da/--/ga/ continuum to hearing-impaired listeners grouped according to etiological basis of the disorder. The syllables were presented monaurally at 80 dB and 100 dB SPL when formant amplitudes were equal and when F 1 amplitude was reduced by 6, 12, and 18 dB. Noise-on-tone masking patterns were also generated using narrow bands of noise at 80 and 100 dB SPL to assess the extent of upward spread of masking. Upward spread of masking could be demonstrated in both speech and nonspeech tasks, irrespective of the subject's age, audiometric configuration, or etiology of hearing impairment. Attenuation of F 1 had different effects on phonetic identification in different subject groups: While listeners with noise-induced hearing loss showed substantial improvement in identifying place of articulation, upward spread of masking did not consistently account for poor place identification in other types of sensorineural hearing impairment.  相似文献

Upward shifts in the masking pattern with increasing masker intensity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Masking patterns obtained with forward-masking paradigms and relatively intense maskers sometimes have their peaks at the masker frequency and sometimes at a frequency well above it. Here it is shown that which outcome is obtained depends upon certain temporal parameters of the procedure. Specifically, the masking pattern for a 2000-Hz tone showed a gradual shift toward higher frequencies as masker intensity was increased from 65 to 95 dB SPL when long signals (about 50 ms) and long masker-to-signal intervals (about 50 ms) were used, but the effect was absent or smaller when the signals and intervals were short. This shift did not occur with a 750-Hz masker. Upward shifts in the masking pattern with increasing masker intensity are in accord with the view that the peak of displacement of the traveling-wave envelope migrates basally with increasing intensity--an idea that has frequently been suggested as an explanation of the so-called half-octave shift so routinely seen in auditory fatigue experiments.  相似文献

Recently, Boege and Janssen [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 111, 1810-1818 (2002)] fit linear equations to distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) input/output (UO) functions after the DPOAE level (in dB SPL) was converted into pressure (in microPa). Significant correlations were observed between these DPOAE thresholds and audiometric thresholds. The present study extends their work by (1) evaluating the effect of frequency, (2) determining the behavioral thresholds in those conditions that did not meet inclusion criteria, and (3) including a wider range of stimulus levels. DPOAE I/O functions were measured in as many as 278 ears of subjects with normal and impaired hearing. Nine f2 frequencies (500 to 8000 Hz in 1/2-octave steps) were used, L2 ranged from 10 to 85 dB SPL (5-dB steps), and L1 was set according to the equation L1 = 0.4L2 + 39 dB [Kummer et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103, 3431-3444 (1998)] for L2 levels up to 65 dB SPL, beyond which L1 = L2. For the same conditions as those used by Boege and Janssen, we observed a frequency effect such that correlations were higher for mid-frequency threshold comparisons. In addition, a larger proportion of conditions not meeting inclusion criteria at mid and high frequencies had hearing losses exceeding 30 dB HL, compared to lower frequencies. These results suggest that DPOAE I/O functions can be used to predict audiometric thresholds with greater accuracy at mid and high frequencies, but only when certain inclusion criteria are met. When the SNR inclusion criterion is not met, the expected amount of hearing loss increases. Increasing the range of input levels from 20-65 dB SPL to 10-85 dB SPL increased the number of functions meeting inclusion criteria and increased the overall correlation between DPOAE and behavioral thresholds.  相似文献

Given that high-frequency hearing is most vulnerable to cochlear pathology, it is important to characterize distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) measured with higher-frequency stimuli in order to utilize these measures in clinical applications. The purpose of this study was to explore the dependence of DPOAE amplitude on the levels of the evoking stimuli at frequencies greater than 8 kHz, and make comparisons with those data that have been extensively measured with lower-frequency stimuli. To accomplish this, DPOAE amplitudes were measured at six different f2 frequencies (2, 5, 10, 12, 14, and 16 kHz), with a frequency ratio (f2/f1) of 1.2, at five fixed levels (30 to 70 dB SPL) of one primary (either f1 or f2), while the other primary was varied in level (30 to 70 dB SPL). Generally, the level separation between the two primary tones (L1 > L2) generating the largest DPOAE amplitude (referred to as the "optimal level separation") decreased as the level of the fixed primary increased. Additionally, the optimal level separation was frequency dependent, especially at the lower fixed primary tone levels ( < or = 50 dB SPL). In agreement with previous studies, the DPOAE level exhibited greater dependence on L1 than on L2.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) of exposure to high-intensity, low-frequency sonar using an element of the standard Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System Low Frequency Active (LFA) sonar source array. Effects of the LFA sonar on hearing were tested using auditory brainstem responses. Effects were also examined on inner ear morphology using scanning electron microscopy and on nonauditory tissues using general pathology and histopathology. Animals were exposed to a maximum received rms sound pressure level of 193 dB re 1 microPa(2) for 324 or 648 s, an exposure that is far in excess of any exposure a fish would normally encounter in the wild. The most significant effect was a 20-dB auditory threshold shift at 400 Hz. However, the results varied with different groups of trout, suggesting developmental and/or genetic impacts on how sound exposure affects hearing. There was no fish mortality during or after exposure. Sensory tissue of the inner ears did not show morphological damage even several days post-sound exposure. Similarly, gross- and histopathology observations demonstrated no effects on nonauditory tissues.  相似文献

Mid-frequency and low-frequency sonar systems produce frequency-modulated sweeps which may affect harbor porpoises. To study the effect of sweeps on behavioral responses (specifically "startle" responses, which we define as sudden changes in swimming speed and/or direction), a harbor porpoise in a large pool was exposed to three pairs of sweeps: a 1-2 kHz up-sweep was compared with a 2-1 kHz down-sweep, both with and without harmonics, and a 6-7 kHz up-sweep was compared with a 7-6 kHz down-sweep without harmonics. Sweeps were presented at five spatially averaged received levels (mRLs; 6 dB steps; identical for the up-sweep and down-sweep of each pair). During sweep presentation, startle responses were recorded. There was no difference in the mRLs causing startle responses for up-sweeps and down-sweeps within frequency pairs. For 1-2 kHz sweeps without harmonics, a 50% startle response rate occurred at mRLs of 133 dB re 1 μPa; for 1-2 kHz sweeps with strong harmonics at 99 dB re 1 μPa; for 6-7 kHz sweeps without harmonics at 101 dB re 1 μPa. Low-frequency (1-2 kHz) active naval sonar systems without harmonics can therefore operate at higher source levels than mid-frequency (6-7 kHz) active sonar systems without harmonics, with similar startle effects on porpoises.  相似文献

Brain stem and forebrain auditory-evoked potentials were studied parametrically during the first 90 postnatal days in unanesthetized kittens using tonal and click stimuli. This paper describes changes that occur in transmission time through the auditory pathway during development by analyses of the maturational time courses of latencies associated with waves of both auditory brain stem responses (ABR's) and late-occurring auditory-evoked potentials (AER's), recorded subdermally from the vertex. In response to click stimuli, ABR latencies were found to decay rapidly early in postnatal life and more slowly after the third postnatal week. Those trends were modeled as a two-stage sequential process, with a linear stage occurring between 7 and 18 postnatal days followed by an exponential stage during which adult latencies were achieved. AER latencies changes during development were less complicated, and followed a single-stage exponential time course. When threshold influences were taken into account--that is, when data were adjusted so that sensation level (SL) was constant across age--the latency-maturation curves associated with all ABR waves were adequately described by a single exponential, and latencies recorded from young animals were substantially shorter than latencies associated with the same aged animals when analyses were carried out with constant sound-pressure level (SPL) stimuli across age. In addition, the difference function, generated when isoasymptotic SPL and SL latency versus age functions were subtracted from one another, was also represented by an exponential curve, suggesting that at least two processes underlie the latency decay that occurs during postnatal development. Evoked responses to tonal stimuli throughout development were consistent with the basoapical developmental gradient that is observed anatomically.  相似文献

The characteristics of acoustic echoes from six species of deep-dwelling (up to 400 m) Hawaiian Lujanid snappers were determined by backscatter measurements at the surface. A broadband linear frequency-modulated signal and a short dolphinlike sonar signal were used as the incident signals. The fish were anesthetized and attached to a monofilament net that was attached to a rotor so echoes could be collected along the roll, tilt, and lateral axes of each fish. The temporal highlight structure of broadband echoes was determined by calculating the envelope of the cross-correlation function between the incident signal and the echoes. The echo waveforms were complex with many highlights and varied with the orientation of the fish. In the tilt plane, the strongest echoes occurred when the incident signal was perpendicular to the long axis of the swimbladder. The number of highlights was the fewest at this orientation. The number of echo highlights and the length of echoes increased as the fish was tilted from this orientation. The highlight structure of the echoes resulted in the transfer function being rippled, with local maxima and minima that changed with fish size and species. The echo structures in both the time and frequency domains were generally consistent within species and were easily distinguishable between species.  相似文献
