Synthesis, antimicrobial and antifungal activity of double quaternary ammonium salts of biphenyls

The synthetic methods for new 2-, 2,2′-, and 3-substituted 4,4′-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyls were developed. Quaternization of them with various amines resulted in a series of new double quaternary ammonium salts containing the biphenyl moiety. The majority of the obtained compounds have a pronounced antifungal and antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive bacteria.     

Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of a perfluoroalkyl-containing quaternary ammonium salt

A novel perfluoroalkyl-containing quaternary ammonium salt 5 was designed and synthesized. Consequently, the antimicrobial activities of compound 5 were measured with Escherichia coli 8099 as a Gram-negative strain and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 as a Gram-positive strain. Both the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, the lowest concentration of compound 5 that inhibits microbial growth) values of quaternary ammonium salt 5 against Escherichia coli 8099 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 were 7.8 μg/ml.     

Synthesis of quaternary ammonium salts containing a polyprenyl substituent

Quaternization of triethylamine, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, and N-methylimidazole with moraprenyl bromide gives the corresponding quaternary ammonium salts.     

Enantioselective iodolactonization catalyzed by chiral quaternary ammonium salts derived from cinchonidine

Chiral quaternary ammonium salts derived from cinchonidine have been applied to catalyze the stereoselective iodolactonizations of trans-5-aryl-4-pentenoic acids leading to a mixture of two regioselectively iodolactonized products with fair to excellent yield (37-98%) and moderate enantioselectivity (exo = 42.0% ee, endo = 31.0% ee) under mild conditions. This work is the first example of asymmetric iodolactonization reaction in the presence of less than a stoichiometric amount of chiral reagent.     

Synthesis and surface antimicrobial activity of a novel perfluorooctylated quaternary ammonium silane coupling agent

A novel perfluorooctyl-containing quaternary ammonium salt was designed and synthesized, which was applied as a surface modification agent to provide the treated cotton fabrics with antimicrobial activity and low critical surface energy.

Carbon-13 magnetic resonance spectra of quaternary ammonium salts derived from enamino ketones

¹³C magnetic resonance spectra of nine quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula R¹C¹(O)C²H?C³HNR₃⁴Cl (where R¹, R⁴ = alkyl) were obtained and compared with those of the parent amino compounds. The chemical shift differences between these two classes of compounds are qualitatively accounted for by π-electron density changes. Steric effects and hyperconjugation of the alkyl substituents are also discussed.     

Heteronuclear multiple magnetic resonance studies of quaternary ammonium salts derived from heterocyclic bases

¹⁴N tickling experiments performed with simultaneous decoupling of substituent protons are used to show that ²J(¹⁴N? H_ortho) and ³J(¹⁴N? H_meta) are both positive in the N-methyl pyridinium ion and related species. Long range coupling extending over as many as five bonds is observed between N-methyl protons and ring protons in ¹⁴N-decoupled spectra. Triple resonance decoupling is used to permit an analysis of the AA′MM′ spin system given by the ring proton of N-methyl pyrazinium iodide.     

Synthesis and inhibiting capacity of new fluorine-containing quaternary ammonium salts

New fluorine-containing quaternary ammonium salts exhibiting a high inhibiting capacity against hydrochloric acid corrosion of low-carbon steels were synthesized. The polarization resistance method was used to determine the uniform-corrosion rates of steel-3 and steel-35 in relation to the structure of fluorine-containing moieties of quaternary ammonium salts and their concentration.

Prediction of the antimicrobial activity of quaternary ammonium salts against Staphylococcus aureus using artificial neural networks

The study of the quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) on antibacterial activity in a series of new imidazole derivatives against Staphylococcus aureus was conducted using artificial neural networks (ANNs). Antibacterial activity against S. aureus was associated with a number of physicochemical and structural parameters of the examined imidazole derivatives. The designed regression and classification models were useful in determining the antibacterial properties of quaternary ammonium salts against S. aureus. The developed models of artificial neural networks were characterized by high predictability (93.57% accuracy of classification, regression model: training data R = 0.92, test data R = 0.92, validation data R = 0.91). ANNs are considered to be a useful tool in supporting the design of synthesis and further biological experiments in the logical search for new antimicrobial substances. Data analysis using ANNs enables the optimization and reduction of labor costs by narrowing the compound synthesis to achieve the desired properties.     

Synthesis and applications of optically active metallacycles derived from primary amines

The synthesis of optically active cyclopalladated derivatives containing primary amines and their application as resolving agents of Lewis bases is reviewed. Some other applications such as the determination of the absolute configuration of coordinated chiral phosphines and the synthesis of chiral liquid crystals are also presented.     

Synthesis and characterization of optically active polyamides derived from carbohydrate-based monomers

The synthesis of three new stereoregular AB-type polyamides based on D -ribono-1,4-lactone, L -arabinose, and D -xylose has been carried out by the active ester polycondensation method. These polyamides were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopies, and powder X-ray diffraction. They displayed optical activity and had a pronounced affinity to water, although they were not soluble in this solvent. Synthesis and reactions of the optically active selenols derived from monoterpenes

A convenient methodology for the synthesis of optically active selenols, derived from p-menthane, carane, and pinane, is described. The selenols were oxidized with air to give the optically active diselenides, and were also converted into the corresponding allylic selenides via reaction with Z- and E-cinnamyl, geranyl, and neryl chlorides. Oxidation of the allylic selenides with mCPBA gave the optically active alcohols via [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the in situ generated allylic selenoxides.

Synthesis and fungicidal activity of the quaternary ammonium salts of the 1,3,7-substituted dibenzothiophene-5,5-diones

A series of novel double quaternary ammonium salts based on 5,5-dioxo-5H-dibenzo[b,d]thiophene has been prepared via quaternization of the corresponding 3,7-bis(chloromethyl)dibenzothiophene-5,5-diones with various N,N-dimethylalkylamines. Pronounced fungicidal activity of the C¹-substituted quaternary ammonium salts has been observed.     

Synthesis of optically active imidazopyridinium salts and the corresponding NHCs

A convergent synthesis of chiral imidazo-[1,5-a]-pyridinium salts is described by facile introduction of a stereogenic center via the N2 substituent. Conversion of these optically active salts to the corresponding N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and their trapping with sulfur followed by optical activity measurements are discussed.
