The author discusses 2-adjacency of two-component links and study the relations between the signs of the crossings to realize 2-adjacency and the coefficients of the Conway polynomial of two related links. By discussing the coefficient of the lowest $m$ power in the Homfly polynomial, the author obtains some results and conditions on whether the trivial link is 2-adjacent to a nontrivial link, whether there are two links 2-adjacent to each other, etc. Finally, this paper shows that the Whitehead link is not 2-adjacent to the trivial link, and gives some examples to explain that for any given two-component link, there are infinitely many links 2-adjacent to it. In particular, there are infinitely many links 2-adjacent to it with the same Conway polynomial.

A vertex \(v\in V(G)\) is said to distinguish two vertices \(x,y\in V(G)\) of a nontrivial connected graph G if the distance from v to x is different from the distance from v to y. A set \(S\subset V(G)\) is a local metric generator for G if every two adjacent vertices of G are distinguished by some vertex of S. A local metric generator with the minimum cardinality is called a local metric basis for G and its cardinality, the local metric dimension of G. It is known that the problem of computing the local metric dimension of a graph is NP-Complete. In this paper we study the problem of finding exact values or bounds for the local metric dimension of strong product of graphs.  相似文献

Geodesic convex sets, Steiner convex sets, and J-convex (alias induced path convex) sets of lexicographic products of graphs are characterized. The geodesic case in particular rectifies Theorem 3.1 in Canoy and Garces (Graphs Combin 18(4):787–793, 2002).  相似文献

In 1977, Trotter and Moore proved that a poset has dimension at most 3 whenever its cover graph is a forest, or equivalently, has treewidth at most 1. On the other hand, a well-known construction of Kelly shows that there are posets of arbitrarily large dimension whose cover graphs have treewidth 3. In this paper we focus on the boundary case of treewidth 2. It was recently shown that the dimension is bounded if the cover graph is outerplanar (Felsner, Trotter, and Wiechert) or if it has pathwidth 2 (Biró, Keller, and Young). This can be interpreted as evidence that the dimension should be bounded more generally when the cover graph has treewidth 2. We show that it is indeed the case: Every such poset has dimension at most 1276.  相似文献

 For an ordered k-decomposition ? = {G 1, G 2,…,G k } of a connected graph G and an edge e of G, the ?-representation of e is the k-tuple r(e|?) = (d(e, G 1), d(e, G 2),…,d(e, G k )), where d(e, G i ) is the distance from e to G i . A decomposition ? is resolving if every two distinct edges of G have distinct representations. The minimum k for which G has a resolving k-decomposition is its decomposition dimension dec(G). It is shown that for every two positive integers k and n≥ 2, there exists a tree T of order n with dec(T) = k. It is also shown that dec(G) ≤n for every graph G of order n≥ 3 and that dec(K n ) ≤⌊(2n + 5)/3⌋ for n≥ 3. Received: June 17, 1998 Final version received: August 10, 1999  相似文献

A set of vertices S resolves a connected graph G if every vertex is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to the vertices in S. The metric dimension of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a resolving set. In this paper we undertake the metric dimension of infinite locally finite graphs, i.e., those infinite graphs such that all its vertices have finite degree. We give some necessary conditions for an infinite graph to have finite metric dimension and characterize infinite trees with finite metric dimension. We also establish some general results about the metric dimension of the Cartesian product of finite and infinite graphs, and obtain the metric dimension of the Cartesian product of several families of graphs.  相似文献

We study subclasses of grid intersection graphs from the perspective of order dimension. We show that partial orders of height two whose comparability graph is a grid intersection graph have order dimension at most four. Starting from this observation we provide a comprehensive study of classes of graphs between grid intersection graphs and bipartite permutation graphs and the containment relation on these classes. Order dimension plays a role in many arguments.  相似文献

We develop some new inequalities for the dimension of a finite poset. These inequalities are then used to bound dimension in terms of the maximum size of matchings. We prove that if the dimension of P is d and d=3, then there is a matching of size d in the comparability graph of P. There is no analogue of this result for cover graphs, as we show that there is a poset P of dimension d for which the maximum matching in the cover graph of P has size \(O(\log d)\). On the other hand, there is a dual result in which the role of chains and antichains is reversed, as we show that there is also a matching of size d in the incomparability graph of P. The proof of the result for comparability graphs has elements in common with Perles’ proof of Dilworth’s theorem. Either result has the following theorem of Hiraguchi as an immediate corollary: \(\dim (P)\le |P|/2\) when |P|=4.  相似文献

The R-set relative to a pair of distinct vertices of a connected graph G is the set of vertices whose distances to these vertices are distinct. This paper deduces some properties of R-sets of connected graphs. It is shown that for a connected graph G of order n and diameter 2 the number of R-sets equal to V(G) is bounded above by ?n2/4?{\lfloor n^{2}/4\rfloor} . It is conjectured that this bound holds for every connected graph of order n. A lower bound for the metric dimension dim(G) of G is proposed in terms of a family of R-sets of G having the property that every subfamily containing at least r ≥ 2 members has an empty intersection. Three sufficient conditions, which guarantee that a family F=(Gn)n 3 1{\mathcal{F}=(G_{n})_{n\geq 1}} of graphs with unbounded order has unbounded metric dimension, are also proposed.  相似文献

We show that posets of bounded height whose cover graphs exclude a fixed graph as a topological minor have bounded dimension. This result was already proven by Walczak. However, our argument is entirely combinatorial and does not rely on structural decomposition theorems. Given a poset with large dimension but bounded height, we directly find a large clique subdivision in its cover graph. Therefore, our proof is accessible to readers not familiar with topological graph theory, and it allows us to provide explicit upper bounds on the dimension. With the introduced tools we show a second result that is supporting a conjectured generalization of the previous result. We prove that ‐free posets whose cover graphs exclude a fixed graph as a topological minor contain only standard examples of size bounded in terms of k.  相似文献

A resolving set for a graph \({\Gamma}\) is a collection of vertices S, chosen so that for each vertex v, the list of distances from v to the members of S uniquely specifies v. The metric dimension of \({\Gamma}\) is the smallest size of a resolving set for \({\Gamma}\). Much attention has been paid to the metric dimension of distance-regular graphs. Work of Babai from the early 1980s yields general bounds on the metric dimension of primitive distance-regular graphs in terms of their parameters. We show how the metric dimension of an imprimitive distance-regular graph can be related to that of its halved and folded graphs. We also consider infinite families (including Taylor graphs and the incidence graphs of certain symmetric designs) where more precise results are possible.  相似文献

The vertices of the flag graph Φ(P) of a graded poset P are its maximal chains. Two vertices are adjacent whenever two maximal chains differ in exactly one element. In this paper we characterize induced subgraphs of Cartesian product graphs and flag graphs of graded posets. The latter class of graphs lies between isometric and induced subgraphs of Cartesian products in the embedding structure theory. Both characterization use certain edge-labelings of graphs.  相似文献

The Hadwiger number η(G) of a graph G is the largest integer n for which the complete graph K n on n vertices is a minor of G. Hadwiger conjectured that for every graph G, η(G) ≥ χ(G), where χ(G) is the chromatic number of G. In this paper, we study the Hadwiger number of the Cartesian product of graphs. As the main result of this paper, we prove that for any two graphs G 1 and G 2 with η(G 1) = h and η(G 2) = l. We show that the above lower bound is asymptotically best possible when h ≥ l. This asymptotically settles a question of Z. Miller (1978). As consequences of our main result, we show the following:
1.  Let G be a connected graph. Let be the (unique) prime factorization of G. Then G satisfies Hadwiger’s conjecture if k ≥ 2 log log χ(G) + c′, where c′ is a constant. This improves the 2 log χ(G) + 3 bound in [2].
2.  Let G 1 and G 2 be two graphs such that χ(G 1) ≥ χ(G 2) ≥ c log1.5(χ(G 1)), where c is a constant. Then satisfies Hadwiger’s conjecture.
3.  Hadwiger’s conjecture is true for G d (Cartesian product of G taken d times) for every graph G and every d ≥ 2. This settles a question by Chandran and Sivadasan [2]. (They had shown that the Hadiwger’s conjecture is true for G d if d ≥ 3).
