A priori error estimates are established for the DtN (Dirichlet-to-Neumann) finite element method applied to the exterior Helmholtz problem. The error estimates include the effect of truncation of the DtN boundary condition as well as that of the finite element discretization. A property of the Hankel functions which plays an important role in the proof of the error estimates is introduced.  相似文献

In this paper, we are concerned with the error analysis for the finite element solution of the two-dimensional exterior Neumann boundary value problem in acoustics. In particular, we establish explicit priori error estimates in H1 and L2- norms including both the effect of the truncation of the DtN mapping and that of the numerical discretization. To apply the finite element method (FEM) to the exterior problem, the original boundary value problem is reduced to an equivalent nonlocal boundary value problem via a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) mapping represented in terms of the Fourier expansion series. We discuss essential features of the corresponding variational equation and its modification due to the truncation of the DtN mapping in appropriate function spaces. Numerical tests are presented to validate our theoretical results.  相似文献

In this paper we present an error analysis for a high-order accurate combined Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map/finite element (FE) algorithm for solving two-dimensional exterior scattering problems. We advocate the use of an exact DtN (or Steklov–Poincaré) map at an artificial boundary exterior to the scatterer to truncate the unbounded computational region. The advantage of using an exact DtN map is that it provides a transparent condition which does not reflect scattered waves unphysically. Our algorithm allows for the specification of quite general artificial boundaries which are perturbations of a circle. To compute the DtN map on such a geometry we utilize a boundary perturbation method based upon recent theoretical work concerning the analyticity of the DtN map. We also present some preliminary work concerning the preconditioning of the resulting system of linear equations, including numerical experiments.  相似文献

We propose a new class of approximate local DtN boundary conditions to be applied on prolate spheroidal-shaped exterior boundaries when solving problems of acoustic scattering by elongated obstacles. These conditions are: (a) exact for the first modes, (b) easy to implement and to parallelize, (c) compatible with the local structure of the computational finite element scheme, and (d) applicable to exterior ellipsoidal-shaped boundaries that are more suitable in terms of cost-effectiveness for surrounding elongated scatterers. We investigate analytically and numerically the effect of the frequency regime and the slenderness of the boundary on the accuracy of these conditions. We also compare their performance to the second-order absorbing boundary condition (BGT2) designed by Bayliss, Gunzburger and Turkel when expressed in prolate spheroid coordinates. The analysis reveals that, in the low-frequency regime, the new second-order DtN condition (DtN2) retains a good level of accuracy regardless of the slenderness of the boundary. In addition, the DtN2 boundary condition outperforms the BGT2 condition. Such superiority is clearly noticeable for large eccentricity values.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the pressure projection stabilized finite element method for the Stokes problem with nonlinear slip boundary conditions whose variational formulation is the variational inequality problem of the second kind with the Stokes operator. The H1 and L2 error estimates for the velocity and the L2 error estimate for the pressure are obtained. Finally, the numerical results are displayed to verify the theoretical analysis.  相似文献

We consider the linearized scalar potential formulation of the magnetostatic field problem in this paper. Our approach involves a reformulation of the continuous problem as a parametric boundary problem. By the introduction of a spherical interface and the use of spherical harmonics, the infinite boundary conditions can also be satisfied in the parametric framework. That is the field in the exterior of a sphere is expanded in a ‘harmonic series’ of eigenfunctions for the exterior harmonic problem. The approach is essentially a finite element method coupled with a spectral method via a boundary parametric procedure. The reformulated problem is discretized by finite element techniques which leads to a discrete parametric problem which can be solved by well conditioned iteration involving only the solution of decoupled Neumann type elliptic finite element systems and L2 projection onto subspaces of spherical harmonics. Error and stability estimates given show exponential convergence in the degree of the spherical harmonics and optimal order convergence with respect to the finite element approximation for the resulting fields in L2.  相似文献

Summary The finite element method with non-uniform mesh sizes is employed to approximately solve Helmholtz type equations in unbounded domains. The given problem on an unbounded domain is replaced by an approximate problem on a bounded domain with the radiation condition replaced by an approximate radiation boundary condition on the artificial boundary. This approximate problem is then solved using the finite element method with the mesh graded systematically in such a way that the element mesh sizes are increased as the distance from the origin increases. This results in a great reduction in the number of equations to be solved. It is proved that optimal error estimates hold inL 2,H 1 andL , provided that certain relationships hold between the frequency, mesh size and outer radius.  相似文献

Consider a homogeneous parabolic problem on a smooth bounded domain in ℝ N but with initial data and Neumann boundary data of low regularity. Sharp interior maximum norm error estimates are given for a semidiscrete C 0 finite element approximation to this problem. These estimates are obtained by first establishing a new localized L estimate for semidiscrete finite element approximations on interior subdomains. Numerical examples illustrate the findings. Numerical analysis of a model Stokes interface problem with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition is considered. The interface condition is interpreted as an additional singular force field to the Stokes equations using the characteristic function. The finite element method is applied after introducing a regularization of the singular source term. Consequently, the error is divided into the regularization and discretization parts which are studied separately. As a result, error estimates of order h1/2 in H1 × L2 norm for the velocity and pressure, and of order h in L2 norm for the velocity are derived. Those theoretical results are also verified by numerical examples.  相似文献

In this paper we present error estimates for the finite element approximation of linear elastic equations in an unbounded domain. The finite element approximation is formulated on a bounded computational domain using a nonlocal approximate artificial boundary condition or a local one. In fact there are a family of nonlocal approximate boundary conditions with increasing accuracy (and computational cost) and a family of local ones for a given artificial boundary. Our error estimates show how the errors of the finite element approximations depend on the mesh size, the terms used in the approximate artificial boundary condition, and the location of the artificial boundary. A numerical example for Navier equations outside a circle in the plane is presented. Numerical results demonstrate the performance of our error estimates.

This article considers the extension of well‐known discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element formulations to elliptic problems with periodic boundary conditions. Such problems routinely appear in a number of applications, particularly in homogenization of composite materials. We propose an approach in which the periodicity constraint is incorporated weakly in the variational formulation of the problem. Both H1 and L2 error estimates are presented. The article treats the question of how to numerically solve the Dirichlet problem for the Stokes system in the exterior of a three-dimensional bounded Lipschitz domain. In a first step, the solution of this problem is approximated by functions solving the Stokes system in a truncated domain and satisfying a suitable artificial boundary condition on the outer boundary of this truncated domain. In a second step, this new problem is approximately solved in finite element spaces related to a graded mesh as introduced by Goldstein [Math. Comp., 36, 387–404 (1981)]. The difference between this finite element approximation and the exact solution of the exterior Stokes problem is estimated in the norm of suitable unweighted L2-Sobolev spaces. A mixed finite element method is developed for a nonlinear fourth-order elliptic problem. Optimal L2 error estimates are proved by using a special interpolation operator on the standard tensor-product finite elements of order k?1. Then two iterative schemes are presented and proved to keep the same optimal error estimates. Three numerical examples are provided to support the theoretical analysis.  相似文献

In this paper we prove a posteriori L 2(L 2) and L (H ?1) residual based error estimates for a finite element method for the one-dimensional time dependent coupling equations of two scalar conservation laws. The underlying discretization scheme is Characteristic Galerkin method which is the particular variant of the Streamline diffusion finite element method for δ=0. Our estimate contains certain strong stability factors related to the solution of an associated linearized dual problem combined with the Galerkin orthogonality of the finite element method. The stability factor measures the stability properties of the linearized dual problem. We compute the stability factors for some examples by solving the dual problem numerically.  相似文献

This paper presents a new coupling of the finite element method and the boundary element method to solve the two-dimensional exterior Helmholtz problems by using the asymptotic radiation conditions in [1], in which the coupling relations are the same as C. Johnson and J. C. Nedelec's. The error estimates are derived and results of numerical calculation in comparison with analytic solution verify the theoretical estimates.  相似文献
