The adsorption of xenon has been studied with UV photoemission (UPS), flash desorption (TDS) and work function measurements on differently conditioned Ru(0001) surfaces at 100 K and at pressures up to 3 × 10?5 Torr. Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) served to ascertain the surface perfectness. On a perfect Ru(0001) surface only one Xe adsorption state is observed, which is characterized byXe5p32,12 electron binding energies of 5.40 and 6.65 eV, an adsorption energy of Ead≈ 5 kcal/mole and dipole moment of μ'T ≈ 0.25 D. On a stepped-kinked Ru(0001) surface, the terrace-width, the step-height and step-orientation of which are well characterized with LEED, however, two coexisting xenon adsorption states are distinguishable by an unprecedented separation inXe 5p32,12 electron binding energies of 800 meV, by their different UPS intensities and line shapes, by their difference in adsorption energy ofΔEad ≈ 3 kcal/mole and finally by their strongly deviating dipole moments of μS = 1.0 D and μT = 0.34 D. The two xenon states (which are also observed on a slightly sputtered surface) are identified as corresponding to xenon atoms being adsorbed at step and terrace sites, respectively. Their relative concentrations as deduced from the UPS intensities quantitatively correlate with the abundance of step and terrace sites of the ideal TLK surface structure model as derived from LEED. Furthermore, ledge-sites and kink-sites are distinguishable via Ead. The Ead heterogeneity on the stepped-kinked Ru(0001) surface is interpreted in terms of different coordination and/or different charge-transfer-bonding at the various surface sites. The enormous increase in Xe 5p electron binding energy of 0.8 eV for Xe atoms at step sites is interpreted as a pure surface dipole potential shift. —The observed effects suggest selective xenon adsorption as a tool for local surface structure determination.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA) has been used to study the physical adsorption of Xe and the chemisorption of oxygen by W (111). An ultrahigh vacuum ESCA spectrometer has been modified such that thermal desorption behavior from the W (111) crystal can be directly compared with ESCA spectra of the adsorbed species. In addition, since the work function of a W (111) crystal covered with one monolayer of Xe is accurately known from previous work, the binding energy of the Xe (3d52) adsorbate level can be accurately compared to the gaseous Xe (3d52) level. When Xe is physisorbed to 1 monolayer the Xe (3d52) level exhibits a binding energy (relative to the vacuum level) which is 2.1 eV below that found for Xe (g). At lower Xe coverages the shift becomes monotonically greater, approaching 2.6 eV at a Xe coverage of 0.05. This 0.5 eV shift downward is accompanied by an increase of only 0.05 eV in adsorption energy as coverage decreases, and may be partially caused by the presence of ~ 10–20 % of extraneous adsorption sites other than W (111) which adsorb Xe with higher adsorption energy. The adsorption energy of Xe may also be increased by coadsorption of oxygen and the Xe (3d52) binding energy exhibits a corresponding shift downward as adsorbed oxygen coverage is increased to θo = 0.5. Electronic relaxation processes affecting the final state are dominant factors in determining the magnitude of the chemical shift upon adsorption, in agreement with the predictions of Shirley. The magnitude of the relaxation effect seems to be very sensitive to small changes in Xe adsorption energy. Similar effects have been seen for chemisorption of CO.The adsorption of O2 at 120 K by W (111) yields a single broad O(1s) peak whose line-width decreases with increasing coverage. The final spectra at θo = 1 monolayer are very similar to those obtained at temperatures of 300 K or above on polycrystalline tungsten.  相似文献

The UPS and XPS spectra of Xe adsorbed on clean, O, CO, and Xe covered W(110) surfaces and the UPS spectrum for Kr on clean and O covered W(110) surfaces have been investigated. On clean W, Xe and Kr show a splitting of the 5p32 and 4p32 hole states respectively. For Xe the coverage dependence of this splitting was investigated in detail; neither the positions nor the intensity ratio of the substates are coverage dependent for θ ? 0.04, suggesting that splitting is due to differences in the image interaction of the mj = ±32 and mj = ±12 components. For Xe equal shifts, relative to vacuum, of ~1.0 eV were observed for 5p, 4d, and 3d levels, suggesting that initial state effects are small. Image interaction for Xe and Kr on clean W could best be fitted by assuming an increase, rather than a decrease in the effective hole-image separation from the nominal value, suggesting that the image plane is moved back into the metal by a screening length. For Xe adsorbed on XeW(110), or on virgin-COW(110) polarization of the intermediate layers was found to contribute significantly to relaxation. Coadsorbed oxygen broadened Xe 5p and Kr 4p peaks. There was an almost linear relation between O 2p UPS intensity at the energies of the various peaks and the amounts of broadening, suggesting that the latter results from resonance neutralization by electrons from the O 2p states.  相似文献

HBr and HCl react with Pt(111) and Pt(100) surfaces to form adsorbed layers consisting of specific mixtures of halogen atoms and hydrogen halide molecules. Exposure of Pt(111) to HBr yielded a (3×3) LEED pattern beginning at ΘBr = 29 and persisting at the maximum coverage which consisted of ΘBr = 13 plus ΘHBr = 19. The most probable structure at maximum coverage, Pt(111)[c(3 × 3)]-(3 Br + HBr), nas a rhombic unit cell encompassing nine surface Pt atoms, and containing three Br atoms and one HBr molecule. On Pt(100) the structure at maximum coverage appears to be Pt(100)[c(2√2 × √2)]R45°-(Br + HBr), ΘBr = ΘHBr = 14; the rectangular unit cell involves four Pt atoms, one Br atom and one HBr molecule. Each of these structures consists of an hexagonal array of adsorbed atoms or molecules, excepting slight distortion for best fit with the substrate in the case of Pt(100). Treatment of Pt(100) with HCl produced a diffuse Pt(100)(2 × 2)-(Cl + HCl) structure at the maximum coverage of ΘCl = 0.13, ΘHCl = 0.11. Exposure of Pt(111) to HCl produced a disordered overlayer. Thermal desorption, Auger spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy provided coverage data. Thermal desorption data reveal prominent rate maxima associated with the structural transitions observed by LEED. Br and HBr, Cl and HCl were the predominant thermal desorption products.  相似文献

Adsorption and work function changes have been followed on a recrystallized rhenium ribbon [preferentially oriented with (0001) plane parallel to the surface] in an ultrahigh vacuum apparatus. Gas pressure was monitored by mass spectrometry and work function variations measured with the diode method in the retarding potential range, using an electron gun. Despite changes in saturation coverages, work function differences at saturation, and sticking coefficient with the adsorption temperature of the sample, curves giving the surface potential with coverage are characterized by a common part till a critical coverage (5 × 1014atomscm2), in the 300–850 K range. Comparison with LEED, thermal desorption and electron induced desorption results of the literature is in agreement with an adsorption induced surface rearrangement, above this critical coverage.  相似文献

The co-adsorption of Cu on O2 and a W{100}surface is studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), thermal desorption (TD), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and by work function change (δø) measurements. It is shown that the presence of Cu on the surface initially decreases sO, the sticking coefficient of O2. For longer oxygen exposures and for higher adsorption temperatures, θO reaches values larger than those on the clean surface for the same O2 exposure. Except at the highest θO values and temperatures, the sticcking coefficient for copper, sCu, is unity and is independent of the oxygen coverage θO in the range studied (0 ? θO ? 2). Co-adsorption at room temperatures does not produce any long range order while co-adsorption at elevated temperature leads to the ordered structures (1 × 1), p(2 × 1), p(2 × 2) and c(2 × 2). The saturation coverage of the two dimensional co-adsorbate at 800 K is given by the relation θCu + 85 θO = 2. The work function is a complicated function of θO and θCu and is determined predominantly by the temperature at which oxygen is adsorbed. At high temperatures the sequence of adsorption has no influence, in contrast to the room temperature behavior.  相似文献

The thermodynamic properties of the adsorption of xenon on the stepped Pd(s)[8(100)×(110)] surface have been studied over a wide range of pressure (5×10?11 to 1×10?4 Torr) and temperature (40–140 K). We have measured adsorption isobars using AES in order to evaluate the surface coverage. By choosing pressure and temperature we have studied under equilibrium conditions, the successive adsorption of xenon on the steps and on the terraces until the first layer is formed, the condensation of the second layer as well as the formation of xenon multilayers. For a small range of pressure and temperature, adsorption takes place only on the atomic steps. The LEED pattern shows that only every other site along the steps is occupied. The extrapolated initial heat of adsorption for steps is EadS = 10.2 kcal/mol, decreasing monotonically by about 2 kcal/mol as the relative coverage of the step sites increases. The dipole moment of the Xe atoms adsorbed on steps is 1.12 D. During adsorption on the terraces the LEED observations suggest that the xenon adlayer is non-localized up to completion of the hexagonally close packed monolayer. The initial heat of adsorption on the terraces, EadT is 8.2 kcal/mol and decreases continuously to a value of 6.9 kcal/mol for a complete monolayer due to lateral repulsive interactions between the adsorbed xenon atoms. The induced dipole moment of Xe on terraces is reduced to 0.49 D. The 5p12 binding energy of Xe adsorbed on terrace sites is 0.3 eV smaller than that of Xe occuping step sites. The differential molar entropy of the adsorbed layer on the terraces as a function of coverage compares fairly well with the calculated value for an ideally mobile two-dimensional gas. No indication of the growth of two-dimensional xenon islands has been found under these conditions. The isosteric heat of adsorption for the second layer is Eadsec = 5.8 kcal/mol independently of the coverage. The condensation of the second layer is a first order two-dimensional gas ? two-dimensional solid phase transition in opposition to the continuous nature of the adsorption of the first layer (extending over a wide range of temperature for a given pressure). The induced dipole moment is further reduced for the Xe second layer to a value of 0.11 D. Finally, the condensation of multilayers proceeds with a latent heat of transformation of Econd = 3.8 kcal/mol in excellent agreement with the known bulk value for the heat of sublimation of xenon. The line shape of the NVV low energy Auger transitions of xenon or the UPS binding energies of the Xe 5p32,12 spectra allow a clear distinction between first, second and higher layer Xe atoms. We have also established the temperature/pressure conditions for equilibrium between first, second and bulk xenon layers, i.e. a so-called “roughening point”.  相似文献

Using the re-equilibration kinetic method the chemical diffusion coefficient in nonstoichiometric chromium sesquisulfide, Cr2+yS3, has been determined as a function of temperature (1073–1373 K) and sulphur vapour pressure (10?104 Pa). It has been found that this coefficient is independent of sulphur pressure and can be described by the following empirical equation: D?Cr2+yS3=50.86 exp(-39070 cal/mole/RT) (cm2s?1). It has been shown that the mobility of the point defects inCr2+yS3 is independent of their concentration and that the self-diffusion coefficient of chromium in this sulfide has the following function of temperature and sulphur pressure: DCr=2.706×102P?14.85S2exp(-56070 cal/mole/RT). (cm2s?1).  相似文献

The phase transitions of LiKSO4 above RT have been investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction, neutron single-crystal diffraction and thermal analysis. Below ca. 675°C the α phase (most probably isomorphous to α -K2So4 with a structure P63/mmc) is incommensurately modulated. From the large number of satellite diffractions, a hexagonal triple k modulation was found with k1 = Ka1 and K ? 12. The lock-in transition takes place at 470°C, as K suddenly becomes 12. This commensurate phase has the P63 symmetry, and is a superstructure of the RT phase. At 439°C the superlattice disappears with the release of latent heat. The dynamical behavior of SO-24 and Li+ ions in the higher-temperature phases is discussed. No incommensurate phase is found below RT.  相似文献

Relative emission intensities of sixteen bands of HCl+ (A2Σ+ - X2Πi), four bands of DCl+ (A2Σ+ - X2Πi), and 5 bands of HBr+ (A2Σ - X2Πi) have been made using both ion-beam excitation and microwave discharge sources. Intensities were determined by comparison with computer-generated spectra. Treatment of the data within the r-centroid approximation shows that in HCl+ the electronic transition moment decreases strongly at large rv′v″ [Re α exp (?3.6rv′v″) for 1.44 A? < rv′v″ < 1.82 A?] but levels off at shorter rv′v″. DCl+ data agree quantitatively with HCl+. The variation in the HBr+ moment is similar, with Re α exp[?4.5 rv′v″] for 1.58 A? < rv′v″ < 1.78 A?.  相似文献

The phenomenological predictions of the SO(10) supersymmetric grand unified model (SO(10) SGUM) for the mass scales M1, M2, weak angle ifsin2θw, quark-leptons mass ratios mbmτ, mtmb, mτmντ and proton lifetime τp are estimated by using renormalization group analysis at one-loop level. In contrast with SU(5) SGUM, we find that the SO(10) SGUM still has problems with τp but not with sin2θw and mbmτ, which may suggest that supersymmetry would be bro at a mass scale ?107GeV.  相似文献

The binding energies of the ΛΛ hypernuclei 10ΛΛBe and 6ΛΛHe are calculated variationally with a 2α + 2Λ and with an α + 2Λ model, respectively. For 10ΛΛBe the integrations were made with Monte Carlo techniques while for 6ΛΛHe direct numerical methods were used. A wide range of phenomenological ΛΛ potentials based on meson-exchange models was considered. An approximately universal linear relation between the calculated values of BΛΛ(10ΛΛBe) and of BΛΛ(6ΛΛHe) is obtained. For the experimental value of BΛΛ(10ΛΛBe) = 17.7 ± 0.1 MeV this relation predicts a much too small value of BΛΛ(6ΛΛHe), well below the lower limit of the quoted experimental value of 10.9 ± 0.6 MeV. For ΛΛ potentials with repulsive cores the relations, for a given BΛΛ(10ΛΛBe), between the low-energy ΛΛ scattering parameters a, r0 and the intrinsic range b are both approximately universal and independent of the detailed potential shape. For the experimental value of BΛΛ(10ΛΛBe) the preferred values are 2.5 ? ?a ? 3.5 fm, 2.6 ? r0 ? 3.1 fm. The large and negative values of a correspond to conditions not too far from a bound 1S0 ΛΛ state and could indicate a 6-quark dibaryon state with the same quantum numbers and above the ΛΛ threshold.  相似文献

Absorption and emission spectra of Mo2 were investigated using flash photolysis of the Mo(CO)6 molecule. Tentative vibrational and rotational analyses of the 98Mo2 spectra were performed. For the ground state, 1Σg+ type was proposed with ωe = 477.1 cm?1, re = 1.929 A?, and D0(Mo2) = 95 ± 15 kcal mole?1. The results were compared with theoretical calculations for Mo2 and experimental results for Cr2 obtained previously. It seems reasonable that the transition metal diatomic molecules of this type have a high bond order.  相似文献

From a study of (p,t) reactions on 31P and 30Si it is suggested that in 29P the states with Jπ=121+ and 122+, the pair 322+, 521+, and the pair 723+, 921+ are related by weak coupling of a s12 proton with the states 01+, 02+, 21+ and 41+ respectively of 28Si. Completely atypical L = 2 angular distributions have been obtained for the 321+ and 522+ states in 29P and it is suggested that this is due to contribution by two-step processes.  相似文献
