LetG be a graph withn vertices andm edges. The problem of constructing a spanning tree is to find a connected subgraph ofG withn vertices andn?1 edges. In this paper, we propose anO(logn) time parallel algorithm withO(n/logn), processors on an EREW PRAM for constructing a spanning tree on trapezoid graphs.  相似文献

We present a parallel randomized algorithm running on aCRCW PRAM, to determine whether two planar graphs are isomorphic, and if so to find the isomorphism. We assume that we have a tree of separators for each planar graph (which can be computed by known algorithms inO(log2 n) time withn1 + εprocessors, for any ε > 0). Ifnis the number of vertices, our algorithm takesO(log(n)) time with processors and with a probability of failure of 1/nat most. The algorithm needs 2 · log(m) − log(n) + O(log(n)) random bits. The number of random bits can be decreased toO(log(n)) by increasing the number of processors ton3/2 + ε, for any ε > 0. Our parallel algorithm has significantly improved processor efficiency, compared to the previous logarithmic time parallel algorithm of Miller and Reif (Siam J. Comput.20(1991), 1128–1147), which requiresn4randomized processors orn5deterministic processors.  相似文献

A parallel algorithm for depth-first searching of a directed acyclic graph (DAG) on a shared memory model of a SIMD computer is proposed. The algorithm uses two parallel tree traversal algorithms, one for the preorder traversal and the other for therpostorder traversal of an ordered tree. Each of these traversal algorithms has a time complexity ofO(logn) whenO(n) processors are used,n being the number of vertices in the tree. The parallel depth-first search algorithm for a directed acyclic graphG withn vertices has a time complexity ofO((logn)2) whenO(n 2.81/logn) processors are used.  相似文献

An intersection graph of rectangles in the (x, y)-plane with sides parallel to the axes is obtained by representing each rectangle by a vertex and connecting two vertices by an edge if and only if the corresponding rectangles intersect. This paper describes algorithms for two problems on intersection graphs of rectangles in the plane. One is an O(n log n) algorithm for finding the connected components of an intersection graph of n rectangles. This algorithm is optimal to within a constant factor. The other is an O(n log n) algorithm for finding a maximum clique of such a graph. It seems interesting that the maximum clique problem is polynomially solvable, because other related problems, such as the maximum stable set problem and the minimum clique cover problem, are known to be NP-complete for intersection graphs of rectangles. Furthermore, we briefly show that the k-colorability problem on intersection graphs of rectangles is NP-complete.  相似文献

The problem of sorting n integers from a restricted range [1…m], where m is a superpolynomial in n, is considered. An o(n log n) randomized algorithm is given. Our algorithm takes O(n log log m) expected time and O(n) space. (Thus, for m = npolylog(n) we have an O(n log log n) algorithm.) The algorithm is parallelizable. The resulting parallel algorithm achieves optimal speedup. Some features of the algorithm make us believe that it is relevant for practical applications. A result of independent interest is a parallel hashing technique. The expected construction time is logarithmic using an optimal number of processors, and searching for a value takes O(1) time in the worst case. This technique enables drastic reduction of space requirements for the price of using randomness. Applicability of the technique is demonstrated for the parallel sorting algorithm and for some parallel string matching algorithms. The parallel sorting algorithm is designed for a strong and nonstandard model of parallel computation. Efficient simulations of the strong model on a CRCW PRAM are introduced. One of the simulations even achieves optimal speedup. This is probably the first optimal speedup simulation of a certain kind.  相似文献

We propose a parallel algorithm which reduces the problem of computing Hamiltonian cycles in tournaments to the problem of computing Hamiltonian paths. The running time of our algorithm is O(log n) using O(n2/log n) processors on a CRCW PRAM, and O(log n log log n) on an EREW PRAM using O(n2/log n log log n) processors. As a corollary, we obtain a new parallel algorithm for computing Hamiltonian cycles in tournaments. This algorithm can be implemented in time O(log n) using O(n2/log n) processors in the CRCW model and in time O(log2n) with O(n2/log n log log n) processors in the EREW model.  相似文献

In this paper, parallel algorithms are presented for solving some problems on permutation graphs. The coloring problem is solved inO(log2 n) time usingO(n 3/logn) processors on the CREW PRAM, orO(logn) time usingO(n 3) processors on the CRCW PRAM. The weighted clique problem, the weighted independent set problem, the cliques cover problem, and the maximal layers problem are all solved with the same complexities. We can also show that the longest common subsequence problem belongs to the class NC.  相似文献

The shortest-paths problem is a fundamental problem in graph theory and finds diverse applications in various fields. This is why shortest path algorithms have been designed more thoroughly than any other algorithm in graph theory. A large number of optimization problems are mathematically equivalent to the problem of finding shortest paths in a graph. The shortest-path between a pair of vertices is defined as the path with shortest length between the pair of vertices. The shortest path from one vertex to another often gives the best way to route a message between the vertices. This paper presents anO(n 2) time sequential algorithm and anO(n 2/p+logn) time parallel algorithm on EREW PRAM model for solving all pairs shortest paths problem on circular-arc graphs, wherep andn represent respectively the number of processors and the number of vertices of the circular-arc graph.  相似文献

Recently, Fredman and Tarjan invented a new, especially efficient form of heap (priority queue). Their data structure, theFibonacci heap (or F-heap) supports arbitrary deletion inO(logn) amortized time and other heap operations inO(1) amortized time. In this paper we use F-heaps to obtain fast algorithms for finding minimum spanning trees in undirected and directed graphs. For an undirected graph containingn vertices andm edges, our minimum spanning tree algorithm runs inO(m logβ (m, n)) time, improved fromO((m, n)) time, whereβ(m, n)=min {i|log(i) nm/n}. Our minimum spanning tree algorithm for directed graphs runs inO(n logn + m) time, improved fromO(n log n +m log log log(m/n+2) n). Both algorithms can be extended to allow a degree constraint at one vertex. Research supported in part by National Science Foundation Grant MCS-8302648. The notion of centroid of a tree is generalized to apply to an arbitrary intersecting family of sets. Centroids are used to construct a compact representation for any intersecting family of sets, as well as any crossing family. The size of the representation for a family on n elements is O(n2), compared to size O(n3) for previous representations. Efficient algorithms to construct the representation are given. For example on a network of n vertices and m edges, the representation of all minimum cuts uses O(m log(n2/m)) space; it is constructed in O(nm log(n2/m)) time (this is the best-known time for finding one minimum cut). The representation is used to improve several submodular flow algorithms. For example a minimum-cost dijoin is found in time O(n2m); as a result a minimum-cost planar feedback are set is found in time O(n3). The previous best-known time bounds for these two problems are both a factor n larger.  相似文献

In this paper, sequential and parallel algorithms are presented to find a maximum independent set with largest weight in a weighted permutation graph. The sequential algorithm, which is designed based on dynamic programming, runs in timeO(nlogn) and requiresO(n) space. The parallel algorithm runs inO(log2 n) time usingO(n 3/logn) processors on the CREW PRAM, orO(logn) time usingO(n 3) processors on the CRCW PRAM.  相似文献

This paper presents fast parallel algorithms for the following graph theoretic problems: breadth-depth search of directed acyclic graphs; minimum-depth search of graphs; finding the minimum-weighted paths between all node-pairs of a weighted graph and the critical activities of an activity-on-edge network. The first algorithm hasO(logdlogn) time complexity withO(n 3) processors and the remaining algorithms achieveO(logd loglogn) time bound withO(n 2[n/loglogn]) processors, whered is the diameter of the graph or the directed acyclic graph (which also represents an activity-on-edge network) withn nodes. These algorithms work on an unbounded shared memory model of the single instruction stream, multiple data stream computer that allows both read and write conflicts.  相似文献

Consider a matroid where each element has a real-valued cost and a color, red or green; a base is sought that contains q red elements and has smallest possible cost. An algorithm for the problem on general matroids is presented, along with a number of variations. Its efficiency is demonstrated by implementations on specific matroids. In all cases but one, the running time matches the best-known algorithm for the problem without the red element constraint: On graphic matroids, a smallest spanning tree with q red edges can be found in time O(n log n) more than what is needed to find a minimum spanning tree. A special case is finding a smallest spanning tree with a degree constraint; here the time is only O(m + n) more than that needed to find one minimum spanning tree. On transversal and matching matroids, the time is the same as the best-known algorithms for a minimum cost base. This also holds for transversal matroids for convex graphs, which model a scheduling problem on unit-length jobs with release times and deadlines. On partition matroids, a linear-time algorithm is presented. Finally an algorithm related to our general approach finds a smallest spanning tree on a directed graph, where the given root has a degree constraint. Again the time matches the best-known algorithm for the problem without the red element (i.e., degree) constraint.  相似文献

Given a univariate polynomialf(z) of degreenwith complex coefficients, whose norms are less than 2min magnitude, the root problem is to find all the roots off(z) up to specified precision 2−μ. Assuming the arithmetic model for computation, we provide an algorithm which has complexityO(nlog5nlogB), whereb= χ + μ, and χ = max{n,m}. This improves on the previous best known algorithm of Pan for the problem, which has complexityO(n2log2nlog(m+ μ)). A remarkable property of our algorithm is that it does not require any assumptions about the root separation off, which were either explicitly, or implicitly, required by previous algorithms. Moreover it also has a work-efficient parallel implementation. We also show that both the sequential and parallel implementations of the algorithm work without modification in the Boolean model of arithmetic. In this case, it follows from root perturbation estimates that we need only specify θ = ⌈n(B+ logn+ 3)⌉ bits of the binary representations of the real and imaginary parts of each of the coefficients off. We also show that by appropriate rounding of intermediate values, we can bound the number of bits required to represent all complex numbers occurring as intermediate quantities in the computation. The result is that we can restrict the numbers we use in every basic arithmetic operation to those having real and imaginary parts with at most φ bits, where[formula]and[formula]Thus, in the Boolean model, the overall work complexity of the algorithm is only increased by a multiplicative factor ofM(φ) (whereM(ψ) =O(ψ(log ψ) log log ψ) is the bit complexity for multiplication of integers of length ψ). The key result on which the algorithm is based, is a new theorem of Coppersmith and Neff relating the geometric distribution of the zeros of a polynomial to the distribution of the zeros of its high order derivatives. We also introduce several new techniques (splitting sets and “centered” points) which hinge on it. We also observe that our root finding algorithm can be efficiently parallelized to run in parallel timeO(log6nlogB) usingnprocessors.  相似文献

We describe fast parallel algorithms for building index data structures that can be used to gather various statistics on square matrices. The main data structure is the Lsuffix tree, which is a generalization of the classical suffix tree for strings. Given ann×ntext matrixA, we build our data structures inO(log n) time withn2processors on a CRCW PRAM, so that we can quickly processAin parallel as follows: (i) report some statistical information aboutA, e.g., find the largest repeated square submatrices that appear at least twice inAor determine, for each position inA, the smallest submatrix that occurs only there; (ii) given, on-line, anm×mpattern matrixPAT, check whether it occurs inA. We refer to the above two kinds of operations as queries and point out that they have applications to visual databases and two-dimensional data compression. Query (i) takesO(log n) time withn2/log nprocessors and query (ii) takesO(log m) time withm2/log mprocessors. The query algorithms are work optimal while the construction algorithm is work optimal only for arbitrary and large alphabets.  相似文献

Many combinatorial problems can be efficiently solved in parallel for series–parallel multigraphs. The edge-coloring problem is one of a few combinatorial problems for which no NC parallel algorithm has been obtained for series–parallel multigraphs. This paper gives an NC parallel algorithm for the problem on series–parallel multigraphsG. It takesO(log n) time withOn/log n) processors, wherenis the number of vertices and Δ is the maximum degree ofG.  相似文献

Efficient parallel algorithms are presented, on the CREW PRAM model, for generating a succinct encoding of all pairs shortest path information in a directed planar graphG with real-valued edge costs but no negative cycles. We assume that a planar embedding ofG is given, together with a set ofq faces that cover all the vertices. Then our algorithm runs inO(log2 n) time and employsO(nq+M(q)) processors (whereM(t) is the number of processors required to multiply twot×t matrices inO(logt) time). Let us note here that wheneverq<n then our processor bound is better than the best previous one (M(n)).O(log2 n) time,n-processor algorithms are presented for various subproblems, including that of generating all pairs shortest path information in a directedouterplanar graph. Our work is based on the fundamental hammock-decomposition technique of G. Frederickson. We achieve this decomposition inO(logn log*n) parallel time by usingO(n) processors. The hammock-decomposition seems to be a fundamental operation that may help in improving efficiency of many parallel (and sequential) graph algorithms. This work was partially supported by the EEC ESPRIT Basic Research Action No. 3075 (ALCOM) and by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Technology of Greece.  相似文献

Consider a set of n unit time jobs, each one having a release date, a due date, both nonnegative integers, and a weight, a positive real number. Given a set of m parallel machines, we describe an algorithm for finding schedules with minimum weighted number of tardy jobs. The complexity of the proposed algorithm is O(n2\frac(1+logm)m)O(n^{2}\frac{(1+\log m)}{m}) . The best previous algorithm for this problem has complexity O(mn 3) and employs network flow techniques. Our method is based on a characterization for schedules of this type and employs graph theoretic tools.  相似文献

A simple parallel randomized algorithm to find a maximal independent set in a graph G = (V, E) on n vertices is presented. Its expected running time on a concurrent-read concurrent-write PRAM with O(|E|dmax) processors is O(log n), where dmax denotes the maximum degree. On an exclusive-read exclusive-write PRAM with O(|E|) processors the algorithm runs in O(log2n). Previously, an O(log4n) deterministic algorithm was given by Karp and Wigderson for the EREW-PRAM model. This was recently (independently of our work) improved to O(log2n) by M. Luby. In both cases randomized algorithms depending on pairwise independent choices were turned into deterministic algorithms. We comment on how randomized combinatorial algorithms whose analysis only depends on d-wise rather than fully independent random choices (for some constant d) can be converted into deterministic algorithms. We apply a technique due to A. Joffe (1974) and obtain deterministic construction in fast parallel time of various combinatorial objects whose existence follows from probabilistic arguments.  相似文献

present a simple and implementable algorithm that computes a minimum spanning tree of an undirected weighted graph G = (V, E) of n = |V| vertices and m = |E| edges on an EREW PRAM in O(log3/2n) time using n + m processors. This represents a substantial improvement in the running time over the previous results for this problem using at the same time the weakest of the PRAM models. It also implies the existence of algorithms having the same complexity bounds for the EREW PRAM, for connectivity, ear decomposition, biconnectivity, strong orientation, st-numbering and Euler tours problems.  相似文献
