A stability analysis in the good-cavity and mean-field limits, of two-photon optical bistability arising when two beams at different frequencies interact with a nonlinear medium in a ring cavity, is presented. We show that bistable behaviour in a two-photon resonant system within a cavity may be attributed to interactive mode-pulling via the two-photon optical Kerr effect and also to absorptive bleaching (atomic saturation). The interactive Kerr process may be regarded as giving rise to a new category of optical bistability. Moreover, a mechanism for the recently-predicted tristability can be found in terms of simultaneous competition between the interactive Kerr effect and bleaching. 相似文献

We study the mean field properties of a solid-state monomode laser containing a saturable absorber which can undergo only two-photon transitions. Even when the cavity is tuned to the atomic line center there are two classes of stationary solutions, one of which is tuned to the microscopic frequency whereas the other one is always detuned. Two-photon laser oscillation and optical bistability have been observed and studied theoretically by various groups. The studies have not considered the buildup of sidemodes. We have extended the corresponding one-photon sidemode treatments to two-photon transitions for which no resonant intermediate levels exist. For the two-photon laser, we find a wide region of single-wavelength instability for a centrally tuned strong mode. For the corresponding two-photon absorptive optical bistability, we predict no single-wavelength instabilities. For strong-mode detuning, we find that appreciable regions of sidemode gain exist for both problems allowing multiwavelength instabilities to occur. 相似文献

We have investigated phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing, in circumstances where optical bistability can occur by two-photon resonant interaction. The solutions of the probe equation coupled with the two-photon equation of state have been obtained and studied. The two-photon phase-conjugated reflectivity is shown to exhibit multistability as well as hysteresis. 相似文献

In this paper we report on both a theoretical model for the transients in optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot cavity and the corresponding experimental results. An analytical calculation permits to predict the shape of the transient curves and the order of magnitude of their time duration in the case of a slow sweep of the length of the cavity. The experiment, which uses the nonlinearity arising from a two-photon transition in rubidium, yields results in good agreement with the theoretical calculation.Work supported by the D.R.E.T. 相似文献

We analyze the behavior of optical bistability in a four-level mercury atomic system driven by a cavity and two external coherent
fields by means of a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that without interacting dark resonances and for large intensity
of coupling field, the optical bistability disappears. So, the double dark resonances could significantly establish the optical

本文系统地研究了双光子共振作用的光学多稳态理论。在平均场近似下求出的状态方程包含了动态斯塔克效应及弛豫时间参数。指出了在平均场近似下,F-P腔与单向环形腔的状态方程有基本相同的形式。分析了双光子光学多稳态的两种物理机构——克尔效应与饱和吸收效应。在一定条件下这两种效应的共同作用可导致双稳态、双双稳态及三稳态。进一步还给出了区分双稳态、双双稳态及三稳态的判别式。最后还研究了双光子四波混频位相复共轭反射率的双稳态及多稳态。

We theoretically investigate the Doppler effect on optical bistability in an N-type active Raman gain atomic system inside an optical ring cavity.It is shown that the Doppler effect can greatly enhance the dispersion and thus create the bistable behaviour or greatly increase the bistable region,which has been known as the positive Doppler effect on optical bistability.In addition,we find that a positive Doppler effect can change optical bistability from the hybrid dispersion-gain type to a dispersive type. 相似文献

The dynamics of the quantum-statistical properties of the radiation of an atom in a cavity interacting with an external coherent
field is investigated. A high level of quantum fluctuations of the field in the cavity is shown to destroy optical bistability
in the multiatom case. Photon-number fluctuations and the spectral dispersion of the canonically conjugate quadratures of
the field inside and outside a cavity are calculated. It is found that in contrast to the multiatom case quadrature squeezing
and squeezing of the radiation intensity of a single atom are negligible inside and outside the cavity.

In CuCl, the optical properties of biexcitons imply an intensity dependence of the dielectric function. It is calculated within a density matrix formalism. The dielectric function is then used to discuss qualitatively experimental results for CuCl placed in a Fabry-Perot cavity.
