We perform a transient analysis, steady-state analysis, and linear stability analysis of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator in order to examine the possibility of a fiber bistable device. We here develop two iterative methods for calculating the dynamics of the Fabry-Perot resonator containing a nonlinear medium with an instantaneous response time. The treatment of the counter-propagating field within the cavity is very important in estimating the nonlinear phase shift due to propagation. A trapezoid rule and midpoint rule are used here for the numerical integration. The iterative method using the trapezoid rule gives excellent agreement with the multiple-beam method developed by Bischofberger and Shen (Phys. Rev. A 19 (1979) 1169), which is more complicated than the proposed procedure. Unfortunately it is found that the midpoint approximation is numerically unstable. Assuming a conventional optical fiber, the switching power for optical bistability is less than 1 kW for a resonator length of 1-2 cm. On the basis of the iterative method, we perform a linear stability analysis to examine whether Ikeda instability affects bistable device application or not. The stability analysis shows that the instability threshold is two orders of magnitude larger than the switching power for optical bistability.  相似文献

The response of an optical frequency comb from an etalon-based coupled optoelectronic oscillator to changes in drive current, optoelectronic loop phase, modulator bias, and laser cavity length has been measured. It is found that controlling the phase of the optoelectronic loop is best suited for control of the pulse repetition rate, whereas controlling the laser cavity length is best for stabilization of the optical carrier frequency. Moreover, by measuring the instabilities of the carrier frequency at the fixed-point frequency of the optoelectronic phase, changes to the optoelectronic phase can be decoupled from changes to the laser cavity.  相似文献

从四波混频产生相位共轭的物理原因出发,定义了相位共轭镜(PCM)的响应时间.建立起非即变相位共轭反馈条件下半导体激光器的外腔模型。以响应时间及频率失调为参变量,对其分岔及噪声等动态行为进行数值分析。结果表明,不考虑噪声影响时,增加相位共轭镜响应时间会使混沌带出现的次数和范围得到较大的抑制,当响应时间增大到1.5ns时,混沌带消失,半导体激光器保持稳定的单周期状态;考虑噪声影响后,随若响应时间的相对强度噪声(RIN)可减小几dB甚至十几dB,产生突变需要的反馈量也增大一个数量级以上,且其频谱的峰值向高频方向移动;另外,由于共轭反馈引起的频率失调低于半导体激光器激射频率3个数量级以上.它只对分岔特性有影响.对相对强度噪声的影响几乎为零。  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the optical properties of an open four-level tripod atomic system driven by an elliptically polarized probe field in the presence of the external magnetic field and compare its properties with the corresponding closed system.Our result reveals that absorption,dispersion and group velocity of probe field can be manipulated by adjusting the phase difference between the two circularly polarized components of a single coherent field,magnetic field and cavity parameters i.e.the atomic exit rate from cavity and atomic injection rates.We show that the system can exhibit multiple electromagnetically induced transparency windows in the presence of the external magnetic field.The numerical result shows that the probe field in the open system can be amplified by appropriate choice of cavity parameters,while in the closed system with introduce appropriate phase difference between fields the probe field can be enhanced.Also it is shown that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by external magnetic field,relative phase of applied fields and cavity parameters.By changing the parameters the group velocity of light pulse changes from subluminal to superluminal light propagation and vice versa.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates the influence of external optical feedback on the polarization state of longitudinal modes in quasi-isotropic microchip Nd:YAG lasers. Under optical feedback, the polarization state of longitudinal modes in quasi-isotropic lasers relies strongly on the intracavity anisotropy loss and mode competition. When the intracavity anisotropy loss is small, external optical feedback can cause polarization switching and strong mode competition between two orthogonal linearly polarized eigenstates of one laser longitudinal mode, which leads to the distortion of laser intensity modulation waveform. The polarization switching is independent of the initial external cavity length. By increasing the intracavity anisotropy loss, one polarization eigenstate can be suppressed and the laser works in single-polarization state. A theoretical analysis based on the compound cavity model is presented, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. The results offer guidance to the development of laser feedback interferometers.  相似文献

All-optical bistable switching is proposed to realize by using an optical Tamm cavity in which a Kerr medium is sandwiched between a metal layer and a Bragg mirror. Results show that the excitation of clockwise and counterclockwise bistable switching under the control of external optical injection is due to the presence of optical Tamm states. In addition, the bistable characteristics of optical Tamm cavities are found to be sensitive to the polarization of external optical injection.  相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to show that the Ikeda instability emerges within the framework of the Bonifacio- Lugiato ring cavity model of optical bistability if the operating conditions are such that the cavity transit time is much longer than the atomic relaxation times. We also show that, while the Ikeda instability disappears in the mean field limit (αL ? 1, T ? 1), it can persist for a laser with injected signal.  相似文献

玻璃材料的内应力关系及所在系统的稳定性、安全性和可靠性,是精密加工领域的重要问题.基于双折射外腔激光回馈效应的应力测量技术以其先进新颖的测量原理受到普遍关注.传统理论普遍认为双折射回馈系统中激光器的输出相位仅由外腔相位延迟决定,而将测量误差归因于外腔镜的非线性运动.本文结合正交偏振激光原理和三镜腔等效模型,测量了激光器的内腔双折射引起的频差大小,进行了频率调谐回馈实验,并根据结论计算了内腔频差对外腔相位延迟测量结果的影响,发现激光器的输出相位由外腔相位延迟、内腔频差、外腔长度共同决定.本文总结了内腔和外腔各向异性共同作用下激光器正交偏振态的相位特性,补充了激光回馈的物理内容,对于应力-双折射、位移、距离等重要参量的精确测量,都具有重要指导意义.  相似文献

The emission characteristics of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) operated in a single-transverse mode and coupled to an external cavity with a diffraction grating as a frequency-selective element are analyzed experimentally, numerically and analytically. The experiments yield a rather abrupt turn-on of the VCSEL to a high-amplitude emission state and hysteresis phenomena. The experimental results are explained by numerical simulations and analytical calculations demonstrating the possibility of bistability between lasing and non-lasing states close to threshold. Hence, the scheme might be useful in all-optical photonic switching applications. A detailed bifurcation analysis near threshold is given by superimposing the numerical results with analytical steady-state curves. The mode selection and switching behavior obtained in the simulations can be interpreted from the point of view of the preference of states with the minimal total losses.  相似文献

To promote the future quantum information technologies, we demonstrate an electrically driven optical switch based on quantum interference in a hybrid opto-electromechanical system, which consists of an opto-mechanical cavity and an external electric circuit. The key element of our scheme is a moveable mirror of cavity as a charged mechanical oscillator capacitively coupled to a fixed charged plate in a variable capacitor. By adjusting the voltage of the capacitor, the displacement of the moveable mirror is modulated, then the cavity field can be electrically turned on or off due to the detuning of the cavity. Based on the cavity induced transparency, the transparency window can be electrically switched on or off by turning on or off the cavity field. Therefore, the susceptibility of the medium in the cavity can be electrically controlled, i.e., the scheme of the electrically controlled absorption switching can be demonstrated. This electrically driven optical switch will excite a development trend and implementation prospect towards the integration and miniaturization of quantum module device in a chip.  相似文献

We propose, in analogy with trapped ions, scalable quantum computation schemes with superconducting charge qubits couple to a micro-wave cavity mode. Single-qubit addressing can be achieved and selective qubit-cavity coupling can be effectively controlled by the external magnetic flux, thus gate operations can be selectively performed. During the implementation of a certain (virtual) excitation operation all the qubits and cavity parameters can be chosen to be fixed, the only parameter needs to be tunable is the external magnetic flux. This is a more efficient way of controlling the system dynamics as it is much easier for experimental realization.  相似文献

The intracavity dynamics of optically injected ring lasers is studied by means of an extended delay-differential Ikeda model. The behavior of this kind of lasers is, in some aspects, strikingly different from that of a nonlinear absorber placed in a ring cavity, for which the Ikeda model was originally derived. In particular, chaotic behavior in the laser case is seen to occur on much faster time scales than for the absorber. The scenario in which the transition to chaos occurs is also different.  相似文献

We investigate theoretically the instability of transient stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a high- finesse fiber ring resonator consisting of a fiber ring and directional coupler. Unlike many reports to date, the linear phase detuning of the cavity is taken into account. It is found that SBS instabilities including the self-pulsing and chaotic behavior can occur even if the length of the fiber resonator is very short. SBS instabilities depend strongly on the linear phase detuning, the input power, and the coupling coefficient of the coupler.  相似文献

We theoretically and experimentally evidence that fiber systems are convective systems since their nonlocal inherent properties, such as the dispersion and Raman effects, break the reflection symmetry. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations carried out for a fiber ring cavity demonstrate that the third-order dispersion term leads to the appearance of convective and absolute instabilities. Their signature is an asymmetry in the output power spectrum. Using this criterion, experimental evidence of convective instabilities is given in a fiber cavity pumped by a pulsed laser.  相似文献

A cw Nd:YAG laser was quasi-phase-matched frequency doubled by a bulk periodically poled flux-grown KTiOPO(4) crystal in an external resonant cavity. The conversion efficiency and the second-harmonic power with a pump of 225 mW were 55% and 123.5 mW, respectively. The loss of the 1-cm-long crystal, which operated near room temperature, was 1.3% and was dominated by scatter from the cleaved facets of the crystal. No damage, photorefractive or other, was observed at intensites of 370Wmm(-2) , but beam size had to be optimized to eliminate thermal-induced instabilities in the doubling cavity.  相似文献
