Two Pt single‐atom catalysts (SACs) of Pt‐GDY1 and Pt‐GDY2 were prepared on graphdiyne (GDY)supports. The isolated Pt atoms are dispersed on GDY through the coordination interactions between Pt atoms and alkynyl C atoms in GDY, with the formation of five‐coordinated C1‐Pt‐Cl4 species in Pt‐GDY1 and four‐coordinated C2‐Pt‐Cl2 species in Pt‐GDY2. Pt‐GDY2 shows exceptionally high catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with a mass activity up to 3.3 and 26.9 times more active than Pt‐GDY1 and the state‐of‐the‐art commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. Pt‐GDY2 possesses higher total unoccupied density of states of Pt 5d orbital and close to zero value of Gibbs free energy of the hydrogen adsorption (|Δ |) at the Pt active sites, which are responsible for its excellent catalytic performance. This work can help better understand the structure–catalytic activity relationship in Pt SACs.

Even though transition‐metal phosphides (TMPs) have been developed as promising alternatives to Pt catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), further improvement of their performance requires fine regulation of the TMP sites related to their specific electronic structure. Herein, for the first time, boron (B)‐modulated electrocatalytic characteristics in CoP anchored on the carbon nanotubes (B‐CoP/CNT) with impressive HER activities over a wide pH range are reported. The HER performance surpasses commercial Pt/C in both neutral and alkaline media at large current density (>100 mA cm?2). A combined experimental and theoretical study identified that the B dopant could reform the local electronic configuration and atomic arrangement of bonded Co and adjacent P atoms, enhance the electrons’ delocalization capacity of Co atoms for high electrical conductivity, and optimize the free energy of H adsorption and H2 desorption on the active sites for better HER kinetics.

Despite tremendous progress in developing doped carbocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the ORR activity of current metal‐free carbocatalysts is still inferior to that of conventional Pt/C catalysts, especially in acidic media and neutral solution. Moreover, it also remains a challenge to develop an effective and scalable method for the synthesis of metal‐free carbocatalysts. Herein, we have developed nitrogen and phosphorus dual‐doped hierarchical porous carbon foams (HP‐NPCs) as efficient metal‐free electrocatalysts for ORR. The HP‐NPCs were prepared for the first time by copyrolyzing nitrogen‐ and phosphorus‐containing precursors and poly(vinyl alcohol)/polystyrene (PVA/PS) hydrogel composites as in situ templates. Remarkably, the resulting HP‐NPCs possess controllable nitrogen and phosphorus content, high surface area, and a hierarchical interconnected macro‐/mesoporous structure. In studying the effects of the HP‐NPCs on the ORR, we found that the as‐prepared HP‐NPC materials exhibited not only excellent catalytic activity for ORR in basic, neutral, and acidic media, but also much better tolerance for methanol oxidation and much higher stability than the commercial, state‐of‐the‐art Pt/C catalysts. Because of all these outstanding features, it is expected that the HP‐NPC material will be a very suitable catalyst for next‐generation fuel cells and lithium–air batteries. In addition, the novel synthetic method described here might be extended to the preparation of many other kinds of hierarchical porous carbon materials or porous carbon that contains metal oxide for wide applications including energy storage, catalysis, and electrocatalysis.

In this project, Pt/NiO?GO nanocatalyst is grown on nickel foam (NF) and, its catalytic activity towards electrochemical oxidation of methanol in acidic media is studied. The first step is devoted to the synthesis of NiO?GO support by a hydrothermal method. Then Pt nanoparticles (~34.3 nm) are electrodeposited on this supporting material. Hydrothermal and electrochemical deposition conditions are optimized. Surface of modified NF was inspected for physical characterization and Chemical composition by some techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectra (EDS), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). In the electrochemical section, the catalytic performance of Pt/NiO?GO/NF towards methanol oxidation is investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is elected to deliberate charge transfer resistance on the catalyst surface. Mass activity, electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and durability of prepared catalysts are compared with commercial Pt/C. Deliberations prove the superiority of Pt/NiO?GO/NF towards methanol oxidation in acidic media. The Superior quality of synthesized nanocatalyst that is attributed to the synergetic effect of the NiO?GO support material and Pt nanoparticles, indicate that Pt/NiO?GO/NF can be successfully used as the anode in the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC).

Developing high-performance noble metal-free and free-standing catalytic electrodes are crucial for overall water splitting. Here, nickel sulfide(Ni_3S_2) and nickel selenide(Ni Se) are synthesized on nickel foam(NF) with a one-pot solvothermal method and directly used as free-standing electrodes for efficiently catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) and oxygen evolution reaction(OER) in alkaline solution. In virtue of abundant active sites, the Ni_3S_2/NF and the NiS e/NF electrodes can deliver a current density of 10 m A cm~(-2) at only 123 m V, 137 m V for HER and 222 m V, 271 m V for OER. Both of the hierarchical Ni_3S_2/NF and Ni Se/NF electrodes can serve as anodes and cathodes in electrocatalytic overall watersplitting and can achieve a current density of 10 m A cm~(-2) with an applied voltage of ~1.59 V and 1.69 V,respectively. The performance of as-obtained Ni_3S_2/NF||Ni_3S_2/NF is even close to that of the noble metalbased Pt/C/NF||IrO_2/NF system.

Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted growing attention because they maximize the number of active sites, with unpredictable catalytic activity. Despite numerous studies on SACs, there is little research on the support, which is essential to understanding SAC. Herein, we systematically investigated the influence of the support on the performance of the SAC by comparing with single‐atom Pt supported on carbon (Pt SA/C) and Pt nanoparticles supported on WO3?x (Pt NP/WO3?x). The results revealed that the support effect was maximized for atomically dispersed Pt supported on WO3?x (Pt SA/WO3?x). The Pt SA/WO3?x exhibited a higher degree of hydrogen spillover from Pt atoms to WO3?x at the interface, compared with Pt NP/WO3?x, which drastically enhanced Pt mass activity for hydrogen evolution (up to 10 times). This strategy provides a new framework for enhancing catalytic activity for HER, by reducing noble metal usage in the field of SACs.

Highly active and durable oxygen reduction catalysts are needed to reduce the costs and enhance the service life of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). This can be accomplished by alloying Pt with a transition metal (for example Ni) and by eliminating the corrodible, carbon‐based catalyst support. However, materials combining both approaches have seldom been implemented in PEFC cathodes. In this work, an unsupported Pt‐Ni alloy nanochain ensemble (aerogel) demonstrates high current PEFC performance commensurate with that of a carbon‐supported benchmark (Pt/C) following optimization of the aerogel's catalyst layer (CL) structure. The latter is accomplished using a soluble filler to shift the CL's pore size distribution towards larger pores which improves reactant and product transport. Chiefly, the optimized PEFC aerogel cathodes display a circa 2.5‐fold larger surface‐specific ORR activity than Pt/C and maintain 90 % of the initial activity after an accelerated stress test (vs. 40 % for Pt/C).

Highly active, stable, and cheap Pt‐free catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are under increasing demand for future energy conversion systems. However, developing HER electrocatalysts with Pt‐like activity that can function at all pH values still remains as a great challenge. Herein, based on our theoretical predictions, we design and synthesize a novel N,P dual‐doped carbon‐encapsulated ruthenium diphosphide (RuP2@NPC) nanoparticle electrocatalyst for HER. Electrochemical tests reveal that, compared with the Pt/C catalyst, RuP2@NPC not only has Pt‐like HER activity with small overpotentials at 10 mA cm−2 (38 mV in 0.5 m H2SO4, 57 mV in 1.0 m PBS and 52 mV in 1.0 m KOH), but demonstrates superior stability at all pH values, as well as 100 % Faradaic yields. Therefore, this work adds to the growing family of transition‐metal phosphides/heteroatom‐doped carbon heterostructures with advanced performance in HER.

Modulation of the electronic structure of metal catalysts is an effective approach to optimize the electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we show a surprisingly strong activation effect of black phosphorus (BP) on platinum (Pt) catalysts to give greatly enhanced catalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The unique and negative binding energy between BP and Pt leads to spontaneous formation of Pt‐P bonds producing strong synergistic ligand effects on the Pt nanoparticles. No Pt‐P bonds are formed with red phosphorus which is another allotrope of P. By controlling the number of Pt‐P bonds, 3.5‐fold enhancement in the HER activity can be achieved from the BP‐activated Pt catalyst and the activity is 6.1 times higher than that of the state‐of‐the‐art commercial Pt/C catalyst. The BP‐activated Pt catalyst exhibits a current density of 82.89 mA cm?2 with only 1 μg of Pt in 1 m KOH at an overpotential of 70 mV.

Atomic metal species‐based catalysts (AMCs) show remarkable possibilities in various catalytic reactions. The coordination configuration of the metal atoms has been widely recognized as the determining factor to the electronic structure and the catalytic activity. However, the synergistic effect between the adjacent layers of the multilayered AMCs is always neglected. We reported an atomic Co and Pt co‐trapped carbon catalyst, which exhibits a ultrahigh activity for HER in the wide range of pH (η10=27 and 50 mV in acidic and alkaline media, respectively) with ultralow metal loadings (1.72 and 0.16 wt % for Co and Pt, respectively), which is much superior to the commercial Pt/C. Theoretical analysis reveals that the atomic metals on the inner graphitic layers significantly alter the electronic structure of the outmost layer, thus tailoring the HER activity. This finding arouses a re‐thinking of the intrinsic activity origins of AMCs and suggests a new avenue in the structure design of AMCs.

The essence of developing a Pt‐based single‐atom catalyst (SAC) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the preparation of well‐defined and stable single Pt sites with desired electrocatalytic efficacy. Herein, we report a facile approach to generate uniformly dispersed Pt sites with outstanding HER performance via a photochemical reduction method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) molecules as the key additive to significantly simplify the synthesis and enhance the catalytic performance. The as‐prepared catalyst displays remarkable kinetic activities (20 times higher current density than the commercially available Pt/C) with excellent stability (76.3 % of its initial activity after 5000 cycles) for HER. EXAFS measurements and DFT calculations demonstrate a synergetic effect, where the PVP ligands and the support together modulate the electronic structure of the Pt atoms, which optimize the hydrogen adsorption energy, resulting in a considerably improved HER activity.

The replacement of platinum with non‐precious‐metal electrocatalysts with high efficiency and superior stability for the hydrogen‐evolution reaction (HER) remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the one‐step synthesis of uniform, ultrafine molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) nanoparticles (NPs) within a carbon matrix from inexpensive starting materials (dicyanamide and ammonium molybdate). The optimized catalyst consisting of Mo2C NPs with sizes lower than 3 nm encapsulated by ultrathin graphene shells (ca. 1–3 layers) showed superior HER activity in acidic media, with a very low onset potential of ?6 mV, a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec?1, and a large exchange current density of 0.179 mA cm?2, as well as good stability during operation for 12 h. These excellent properties are similar to those of state‐of‐the‐art 20 % Pt/C and make the catalyst one of the most active acid‐stable electrocatalysts ever reported for HER.

Chemical doping has been demonstrated to be an effective way to realize new functions of graphene as metal‐free catalyst in energy‐related electrochemical reactions. Although efficient catalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been achieved with doped graphene, its performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is rather poor. In this study we report that nitrogen and sulfur co‐doping leads to high catalytic activity of nanoporous graphene in HER at low operating potential, comparable to the best Pt‐free HER catalyst, 2D MoS2. The interplay between the chemical dopants and geometric lattice defects of the nanoporous graphene plays the fundamental role in the superior HER catalysis.

Graphdiyne, as a magical support, can anchor zero valence metal atoms, providing us with an opportunity to develop emerging catalysts with the maximized active sites and selectivity. Herein we report high-performance atom catalysts (ACs), Cu0/GDY, by anchoring Cu atoms on graphdiyne (GDY) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The activity and selectivity of this catalyst are obviously superior to that of commercial 20 wt.% Pt/C, and the turnover frequency of 30.52 s−1 is 18 times larger than 20 wt.% Pt/C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the strong p-d coupling induced charge compensation leads to the zero valence state of the atomic-scaled transition metal catalyst. Our results show the strong advantages of graphdiyne-anchored metal atom catalysts in the field of electrochemical catalysis and opens up a new direction in the field of electrocatalysis.

Nitrogen‐doped carbon nanosheets (NDCN) with size‐defined mesopores are reported as highly efficient metal‐free catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A uniform and tunable mesoporous structure of NDCN is prepared using a templating approach. Such controlled mesoporous structure in the NDCN exerts an essential influence on the electrocatalytic performance in both alkaline and acidic media for the ORR. The NDCN catalyst with a pore diameter of 22 nm exhibits a more positive ORR onset potential than that of Pt/C (?0.01 V vs. ?0.02 V) and a high diffusion‐limited current approaching that of Pt/C (5.45 vs. 5.78 mA cm?2) in alkaline medium. Moreover, the catalyst shows pronounced electrocatalytic activity and long‐term stability towards the ORR under acidic conditions. The unique planar mesoporous shells of the NDCN provide exposed highly electroactive and stable catalytic sites, which boost the electrocatalytic activity of metal‐free NDCN catalyst.

Long-term deterioration in the performance of PEFCs is attributed largely to reduction in active area of the platinum catalyst at cathode, usually caused by carbon-support corrosion. Multi-walled carbon-nanotubes (MWCNTs) as cathode-catalyst support are found to enhance long-term stability of platinum catalyst (Pt) in relation to non-graphitic carbon. In addition, highly graphitic MWCNTs (G-MWCNTs) are found to be electrochemically more stable than pristine MWCNTs. This is because graphitic-carbon-supported-Pt (Pt/MWCNTs) cathodes exhibit higher resistance to carbon corrosion in-relation to non-graphitic-carbon-supported-Pt (Pt/C) cathodes in PEFCs during accelerated stress-test (AST) as evidenced by chronoamperometry and carbon dioxide studies. The corresponding change in electrochemical surface area (ESA), cell performance, and charge-transfer resistance are monitored through cyclic voltammetry, cell polarization, and impedance measurements, respectively. The extent of crystallinity, namely amorphous or graphitic nature of the three supports, is examined by Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies both prior and after AST suggest lesser deformation in catalyst layer and catalyst particles for Pt/G-MWCNTs and Pt/MWCNTs cathodes in relation to Pt/C cathodes, reflecting that graphitic carbon-support resists carbon corrosion and helps mitigating aggregation of Pt particles. It is also found that with increasing degree of graphitization, the electrochemical stability for MWCNTs increases due to the lesser surface defects.
