Thermal conductivities and specific heat capacities of nanoparticles of Al2O3 dispersed in water and ethylene glycol as a function of the particle volume fraction and at temperatures between 298 and 338 K were measured. The steady-state coaxial cylinders method, using a C80D microcalorimeter (Setaram, France) equipped with special calorimetric vessels, was used for the thermal conductivities measurements. The heat capacities were measured with a Micro DSC II microcalorimeter (Setaram, France) with batch cells designed in our laboratory and the “scanning or continuous method.” The Hamilton–Crosser model properly accounts for the thermal conductivity of the studied nanofluids. Assuming that the nanoparticles and the base fluid are in thermal equilibrium, the experimental specific heat capacities of nanofluids are correctly justified.  相似文献

A new theoretical model for thermal conductivity of nanofluids is developed incorporating effective medium theory, interfacial layer, particle aggregation and Brownian motion-induced convection from multiple nanoparticles/aggregates. The predicated result using aggregate size, which represents the particle size in the actual condition of nanofluids, fits well with the experimental data for water-, R113- and ethylene glycol (EG)-based nanofluids. The present model also gives much better predictions compared to the existing models. A parametric analysis, particularly particle aggregation, is conducted to investigate the dependence of effective thermal conductivity of nanofluids on the properties of nanoparticles and fluid. Aggregation is the main factor responsible for thermal conductivity enhancement. The dynamic contribution of Brownian motion on thermal conductivity enhancement is surpassed by that of static mechanisms, particularly at high volume fraction. Predication also indicated that the viscosity increases faster than the thermal conductivity, causing the highly aggregated nanofluids to become unfavourable, especially for df = 1.8.  相似文献

In this research, three different volume concentrations (??=?0.05, 0.1 and 0.2%) of Al2O3/water, CuO/water and Al2O3–CuO/water (50:50) nanofluids are prepared by adopting a two-step nanofluid preparation method. Al2O3 and CuO nanoparticles with the average diameter of 50 nm and 27 nm were dispersed in distilled water. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of prepared nanofluids are measured for different temperatures by using KD2 Pro thermal property analyzed and Brookfield viscometer, respectively. The effects of nanofluids on the thermal, electrical and overall efficiency of photovoltaic thermal (PVT) solar collector are also studied. The experimental results revealed that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the increase in percentage volume concentration and viscosity decreases with the increase in temperature. Furthermore, the obtained maximum thermal and electrical efficiencies of a PVT solar collector for 0.2% volume concentration of hybrid nanofluids are 82% and 15%, respectively, at peak solar radiation. The highest overall efficiency of a PVT collector with .2% volume concentration of hybrid nanofluid was 97% at peak solar radiation. Results recommend that nanofluids can be used as a heat transfer in PVT solar collector.

The effect of dielectric loss on the electrorheological (ER) characteristic of dielectric nanofluids under shear was studied. When nanofluids are activated by an applied electric field, it behaves like a non-Newtonian fluid under ER effect by creating the chains of nanoparticles. ER characteristics of ZnO and Al2O3 nanofluids with various nanoparticles concentration (0.1, 0.05, 0.01 wt%) were measured. For this purpose, a solenoid-based electromagnetic (EM) transmitter was used under different propagation media including air, tap water, and salt water. The result shows that all the nanofluids exhibit pseudo-plastic behavior, while the electric field causes a significant increase in viscosity in the presence of tap water, followed by salt water. Additionally, the viscosity of nanofluid shows a high dependence on particle loading. A possible mechanism was also proposed to describe the effect of dielectric properties on the ER behavior of dielectric nanofluids.  相似文献

Microwave synthesis has been applied to prepare stable silver nanofluids in ethanol by reduction of AgNO3 with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), used as stabilizing agent, having Ag concentrations of 1% by volume. The nanofluids were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy and systematically investigated for refractive index, electrical and thermal conductivity, and viscosity for different polymer concentrations. The size of nanoparticles was found to be in the range of 30–60 nm for two different salt-to-PVP ratios. For higher concentration of polymer in nanofluid, nanoparticles were 30 nm in size showing increase in thermal conductivity but a decrease in viscosity and refractive index, which is due to the polymer structure around nanoparticles. Thermal conductivity measurements of nanofluids show substantial increment in the thermal conductivity of nanofluid relative to the base fluid and nonlinear enhancement over the 283–323 K temperature range. Rheology of nanofluids was studied at room temperature showing effect of polymer on viscosity and confirming the Newtonian behavior of nanofluid.  相似文献

The application of nanofluids in energy systems is developing day by day. Before using a nanofluid in an energy system, it is necessary to measure the properties of nanofluids. In this paper, first the results of experiments on the thermal conductivity of MgO/ethylene glycol (EG) nanofluids in a temperature range of 25–55 °C and volume concentrations up to 5 % are presented. Different sizes of MgO nanoparticles are selected to disperse in EG, including 20, 40, 50, and 60 nm. Based on the results, an empirical correlation is presented as a function of temperature, volume fraction, and nanoparticle size. Next, the model of thermal conductivity enhancement in terms of volume fraction, particle size, and temperature was developed via neural network based on the measured data. It is observed that neural network can be used as a powerful tool to predict the thermal conductivity of nanofluids.  相似文献

In this paper, a review of the impact of most common nanoparticles on the Leidenfrost temperature T Leid in heat transfer applications is delivered. Moreover, a simple economic analysis of the nanoparticles use is proposed. When coolant is distilled water, T Leid can range 150–220 °C; occasionally, it can even amount to over 400 °C. When the base liquid is modified by additives, considerable changes in the character of heat transfer are observed. Out of five nanofluids under consideration in this study, the best thermal effect (up to 50%) is obtained when Al2O3 nanofluid having particle sizes ~39 nm and volume concentration of 0.1% is used. Conversely, the fluid containing TiO2 particles, 20–70 nm in size, seems to be the worst of the analysed fluid, giving only 7% heat transfer enhancement in comparison with water. However, when TiO2 nanoparticles are far smaller, very good thermal effects are obtained (23–25%). In a majority of the cases analysed, the temperature that marks the onset of film boiling is inversely proportional to concentrations of nanoparticles, which is relevant from the economic standpoint.  相似文献

In the present paper, the effects of temperature and volume fraction on thermal conductivity of SWCNT–Al2O3/EG hybrid nanofluid are investigated. Single-walled carbon nanotube with outer diameter of 1–2 nm and aluminum oxide nanoparticles with mean diameter of 20 nm with the ratio of 30 and 70%, respectively, were dispersed in the base fluid. The measurements were conducted on samples with volume fractions of 0.04, 0.08, 0.15, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.5 and 2.5. In order to investigate the effects of temperature on thermal conductivity of the nanofluid, this characteristic was measured in five different temperatures of 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 °C. The results indicate that enhancement of nanoparticles’ thickness in low volume fractions and at any temperature causes a considerable increment in thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. In this study, the highest enhancement of thermal conductivity was 41.2% which was achieved at the temperature of 50 °C and volume fraction of 2.5%. Based on the experimental data, an experimental correlation and a neural network are presented and for thermal conductivity of the nanofluid in terms of volume fraction and temperature. Comparing outputs of the experimental correlation and the designed artificial neural network with experimental data, the maximum error values for the experimental correlation and the artificial neural network were, respectively, 2.6 and 1.94% which indicate the excellent accuracy of both methods in prediction of thermal conductivity.  相似文献

In the present work aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles were synthesised by the precipitation method using AlCl3 as a starting material. The synthesised nanoparticles were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). These nanoparticles have been dispersed in base fluid, an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol (EG). Density (ρ), ultrasonic velocity (u), and viscosity (η) for these nanofluids have been measured at different concentrations as a function of temperature (T = 303.15 K, 308.15 K, and 313.15 K). Using their values various acoustical and thermodynamical parameters have been computed.  相似文献

A phenomenological formula has been proposed to describe the thermal conductivity of waterbased nanofluids. The formula has been derived based on available experimental data on nanofluids containing Al2O3 particles. It takes into account the dependence of the thermal conductivity coefficients of the nanofluids on both volume concentration and sizes of the particles. The formula has also been shown to describe with an accuracy of about 3% the thermal conductivity coefficients of nanofluids containing TiO2, SiO2, ZrO2, and CuO particles with sizes of 8–150 nm and volume concentrations as high as 8%.  相似文献

In this study, a model is proposed by applying the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). In addition, genetic algorithm is used for selection and optimization of hyperparameters that are embedded in the LSSVM model. In addition to temperature and concentration of nanoparticles, the parameters which are used in most of the modeling procedures for thermal conductivity, the effect of particle size is considered. By considering the size of nanoparticles as one of the input variables, a more comprehensive model is obtained which is applicable for wider ranges of influential factor on the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. The coefficient of determination (R2) for the introduced model is equal to 0.9902, and the mean squared error is 8.64 × 10?4 for the thermal conductivity ratio of Al2O3/EG.

Thermo‐mechanically durable industrial polymer nanocomposites have great demand as structural components. In this work, highly competent filler design is processed via nano‐modified of micronic SiO2/Al2O3 particulate ceramics and studied its influence on the rheology, glass transition temperature, composite microstructure, thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, micro hardness, and tribology properties. Composites were fabricated with different proportions of nano‐modified micro‐composite fillers in epoxy matrix at as much possible filler loadings. Results revealed that nano‐modified SiO2/Al2O3 micro‐composite fillers enhanced inter‐particle network and offer benefits like homogeneous microstructures and increased thermal conductivity. Epoxy composites attained thermal conductivity of 0.8 W/mK at 46% filler loading. Mechanical strength and bulk hardness were reached to higher values on the incorporation of nano‐modified fillers. Tribology study revealed an increased specific wear rate and decreased friction coefficient in such fillers. The study is significant in a way that the design of nano‐modified mixed‐matrix micro‐composite fillers are effective where a high loading is much easier, which is critical for achieving desired thermal and mechanical properties for any engineering applications. Thermal behavior of highly crystalline ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles of different apparent crystallite sizes was characterized using thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, and analysis of evolved gas by mass spectrometry. Phase composition of the samples was monitored ex situ by X-ray powder diffraction. The results show that the thermal stability of this metastable iron oxide polymorph decreases with increasing particle size. For the particle diameter of 19(2) nm, the transformation temperature was equal to 794(5) °C, while for 28(2) nm only 755(10) °C. Surface of the nanoparticles contained adsorbed water and carbon dioxide. Elimination of these species proceeds in two steps. Water is removed at temperatures below 200 °C and CO2 in the temperature range between 200 and 450 °C.  相似文献

A numerical simulation model for laminar flow of nanofluids in a pipe with constant heat flux at the wall has been built to study the effect of Reynolds number on heat transfer and pressure loss. The investigation was performed for metallic oxide and multi-oxide nanoparticles suspended in water. The thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity were measured for a range of temperature (10–60 °C) and volume fraction of multi-oxide nanofluid. Comparison of the thermal conductivity for monocular oxide and multi-oxide nanofluids reveals a new way to control the enhancement in nanofluid conductivity. The numerical results obtained were compared with existing well-established correlations. The predictions of the Nusselt number for nanofluids are in agreement with the Shah correlation, and the deviation in the results is less than 1 %. It is found that the pressure loss increases with the Reynolds number, nanoparticle density, and volume fraction for multi-oxide nanoparticles. However, the flow demonstrates enhancement in heat transfer which improves with increasing Reynolds number of the flow.  相似文献

The effect of Al2O3 content on microstructure, hardness, fracture toughness and electrical conductivity behaviours of c-ZrO2 ceramics was investigated using high-purity commercial powder of 8 mol% yttria-stabilised c-ZrO2 doped with up to 10 wt.% Al2O3. XRD results showed that the c-ZrO2 specimens doped up to 0.3 wt.% Al2O3 revealed no Al2O3 peaks, indicating that Al2O3 was completely solubilised in the c-ZrO2 matrix. However, when >0.3 wt.% Al2O3 was added, Al2O3 peaks started to appear, showing that overdoped Al2O3 was not solubilised in the c-ZrO2 matrix. The introduction of Al2O3 significantly enhanced the hardness and fracture toughness of c-ZrO2. The hardness and fracture toughness increased with increasing Al2O3 content. The maximum hardness and fracture toughness values reached 1,459?±?8 kg/mm2 and 2.41?±?0.02 MPa/m1/2, respectively, with the addition of 10 wt.% Al2O3, while these values were 1,314?±?11 kg/mm2 and 1.5 ?±?0.03 MPa/m1/2 for undoped c-ZrO2. The increase of hardness and fracture toughness can be attributed to smaller grain size, the increment of Young’s modulus of Al2O3-doped c-ZrO2 and different expansion coefficients of c-ZrO2 and Al2O3 grains. The electrical conductivity of the specimens was measured using a frequency response analyzer in the frequency range of 5–13 MHz and in the temperature range of 300–800 °C. It was seen that electrical conductivity slightly increased with increasing Al2O3 content up to 1 wt.%, and further increase in Al2O3 led to a decreased in the conductivity.  相似文献

A new plasticized nanocomposite polymer electrolyte based on poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-LiTf dispersed with ceramic filler (Al2O3) and plasticized with propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC), and a mixture of EC and PC (EC+PC) have been studied for their ionic conductivity and thermal properties. The incorporation of plasticizers alone will yield polymer electrolytes with enhanced conductivity but with poor mechanical properties. However, mechanical properties can be improved by incorporating ceramic fillers to the plasticized system. Nanocomposite solid polymer electrolyte films (200–600 μm) were prepared by common solvent-casting method. In present work, we have shown the ionic conductivity can be substantially enhanced by using the combined effect of the plasticizers as well as the inert filler. It was revealed that the incorporating 15 wt.% Al2O3 filler in to PEO: LiTf polymer electrolyte significantly enhanced the ionic conductivity [σ RT (max)?=?7.8?×?10?6 S cm?1]. It was interesting to observe that the addition of PC, EC, and mixture of EC and PC to the PEO: LiTf: 15 wt.% Al2O3 CPE showed further conductivity enhancement. The conductivity enhancement with EC is higher than PC. However, mixture of plasticizer (EC+PC) showed maximum conductivity enhancement in the temperature range interest, giving the value [σ RT (max)?=?1.2?×?10?4 S cm?1]. It is suggested that the addition of PC, EC, or a mixture of EC and PC leads to a lowering of glass transition temperature and increasing the amorphous phase of PEO and the fraction of PEO-Li+ complex, corresponding to conductivity enhancement. Al2O3 filler would contribute to conductivity enhancement by transient hydrogen bonding of migrating ionic species with O–OH groups at the filler grain surface. The differential scanning calorimetry thermograms points towards the decrease of T g , crystallite melting temperature, and melting enthalpy of PEO: LiTf: Al2O3 CPE after introducing plasticizers. The reduction of crystallinity and the increase in the amorphous phase content of the electrolyte, caused by the filler, also contributes to the observed conductivity enhancement.  相似文献

An experimental study is performed to determine the pressure drop and performance characteristics of Al2O3/water and CuO/water nanofluids in a triangular duct under constant heat flux where the flow is laminar. The effects of adding nanoparticles to the base fluid on the pressure drop and friction factor are investigated at different Reynolds numbers. The results show that at a specified Reynolds number, using the nanofluids can lead to an increase in the pressure drop by 35%. It is also found that with increases in the Reynolds number, the rate of increase in the friction factor with the volume fraction of nanoparticles is reduced. Finally, the performance characteristics of the two nanofluids are investigated using the data of pressure drop and convective heat transfer coefficient. The results show that the use of Al2O3/water nanofluid with volume fractions of 1.5% and 2% is not helpful in the triangular duct. It is also concluded that at the same volume fraction of nanoparticles, using Al2O3 nanoparticles is more beneficial than CuO nanoparticles based on the performance index.  相似文献

The incorporation of transition metal oxide fillers into the polymer matrix through solution mixing polymerization imparts enhanced electrical and thermal properties. The present work focused on the optical properties, crystallinity, thermal stability, temperature-dependent conductivity, dielectric constant and modulus of chlorinated polyethylene/copper alumina (CPE/Cu–Al2O3) nanocomposites. Optical absorption measured using an ultraviolet–visible (UV–visible) spectrometer shows enhanced intensity and a blue shift for CPE/Cu–Al2O3 nanocomposites. The bandgap energy of CPE/Cu–Al2O3 nanocomposites was lower than pure CPE and minimum bandgap energy was recorded for a 7 wt% composites. The X-ray diffraction demonstrates that Cu–Al2O3 nanoparticles were uniformly introduced into the CPE matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) manifests improved thermal stability of nanocomposites. Dielectric properties decrease with frequency, whereas AC conductivity increases with frequency, and both AC conductivity and dielectric properties increase with temperature. The maximum AC conductivity and dielectric constant were obtained for 7 wt % nanofiller loaded sample. For all systems, the activation energy for electrical conductivity decreases with rising temperatures. The experimental dielectric constant values of CPE nanocomposites were correlated with different theoretical models. The Bruggeman model was in good agreement with the experimental permittivity. The impedance experiments showed a decreasing trend with temperature, indicating the semiconducting nature of prepared nanocomposites.  相似文献

Nanofluids of Li2CO3–Na2CO3–K2CO3 improved by three nano-Al2O3 samples are firstly prepared by means of two-step aqueous method to enhance thermal properties for high-temperature heat transfer, when used as heat transfer fluids and thermal energy systems for concentrating solar power systems. Specific heat of ternary carbonates containing Al2O3 of 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.0, 1.4 and 2.0 mass% is measured, and nanofluids with 1.0 mass% of 20-nm Al2O3, 1.0 mass% of 50-nm Al2O3 and 0.8 mass% of 80-nm Al2O3 are selected as superior candidates. The maximum enhancement of specific heat is 18.5% in solid and 33.0% in liquid, 17.9% in solid and 22.7% in liquid, 13.2% in solid and 17.5% in liquid for nanofluids containing 20-, 50- and 80-nm Al2O3. Thermal conductivity is, respectively, improved by 23.3, 28.5 and 30.9% under the addition of Al2O3. New chemical bonds and crystals are scarcely formed in composites through FT-IR and XRD determination. SEM images certify that nano-Al2O3 are homogeneously mixed into nanofluids and this structure may be a critical incentive for enhancing thermal properties. There are no significant changes with respect to the heat flow, melting/freezing point and latent heat after the 30 circles of determination. Briefly, it can be speculated that these nanofluids will exhibit tremendous potential in the coming applications of heat transfer and thermal storage for concentrating solar power systems.

The present paper gives new insight into the problem of controlling the morphology of reduced graphene oxide/alumina (RGO/Al2O3) nanocomposites. The dry and simplified sol–gel methods of RGO/Al2O3 nanocomposite synthesis were compared and the influence of six key synthesis parameters on the morphology of the resulting nanocomposite powders was investigated to optimize the morphology of RGO/Al2O3 nanocomposites in terms of reducing the undesired agglomeration of RGO/Al2O3 nanocomposite flakes to a significant minority and obtaining the uniform coverage of RGO surface with Al2O3 nanoparticles. Our investigations indicate that, despite the high excess of Al2O3 used (95 wt%), the lowest RGO/Al2O3 flake agglomeration and the formation of a uniform layer composed of Al2O3 nanoparticles with the average size of 58 nm occurred only when 5 wt% of graphene oxide was used as a substrate for the deposition of Al2O3 nanoparticles together with triethyl aluminium as an Al2O3 precursor and dry hexane as the reaction environment. The resulting organic precursor was thermally decomposed at 280 °C for 3 h in air atmosphere (R4 reaction pathway). This was confirmed by the high BET-specific surface area (242.4 m2/g) and the high open porosity (0.7 cm3/g) of the obtained RGO(5 wt%)/Al2O3 nanocomposite. This is also the first study with a detailed discussion of the reactions expected to occur during the synthesis of an RGO/Al2O3 nanocomposite.  相似文献
