We measure the frequency of the 2(3)S1-->2(3)P(0,1,2) transitions of helium in a metastable beam using an optical frequency comb synthesizer. The relative uncertainty of these measurements ranging from 5x10(-11) to 7x10(-12) is, to our knowledge, the most precise result for any optical helium transition. Considering existing accurate values of the 2(3)P fine structure, we measure a centroid value of the 2(3)S-2(3)P frequency of 276 736 495 624.6(2.4) kHz, improving the previous interferometric measurement by 30 times. New accurate values of the 2(3)S-2(3)P and 2(3)P Lamb-shift energies are obtained.  相似文献

A complete calculation of relativistic and quantum electrodynamic effects to order malpha(6) on the energy of the 2(3)S1 state in helium is presented. The result, beyond the previously known radiative corrections, amounts to -3.00(1) MHz, and significantly reduces the theoretical uncertainty. The improved theoretical predictions are compared to the best available experimental result for the 2(3)S1 state.  相似文献

We present the first experimental determination of the electric-dipole forbidden (3s3p)3P?→(3s2)1S? (M2) transition rate in 2?Mg and compare to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. Our measurement exploits a magnetic trap isolating the sample from perturbations and a magneto-optical trap as an amplifier converting each 3P?→1S? decay event into millions of photons readily detected. The transition rate is determined to be (4.87 ± 0.3)×10?? s?1 corresponding to a 3P? lifetime of 2050(-110)(+140) sec. This value is in agreement with recent theoretical predictions, and to our knowledge the longest lifetime ever determined in a laboratory environment.  相似文献

We have studied the inclusive photon spectra in Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) decays using a large statistics data sample obtained with the CLEO III detector. We present the most precise measurements of electric dipole (E1) photon transition rates and photon energies for Upsilon(2S) --> gammachi(bJ)(1P) and Upsilon(3S) --> gammachi(bJ)(2P) (J = 0, 1, 2). We measure the rate for a rare E1 transition Upsilon(3S) --> gammachi(b0)(1P) for the first time. We also set upper limits on the rates for the hindered magnetic dipole (M1) transitions to the eta(b)(1S) and eta(b)(2S) states.  相似文献

Spin-lattice relaxation of (129)Xe nuclei in solid natural xenon has been investigated in detail over a large range of paramagnetic O(2) impurity concentrations. Direct measurements of the ground state magnetic properties of the O(2) are difficult because the ESR (electron spin resonance) lines of O(2) are rather unstructured, but NMR measurements in the liquid helium temperature region (1.4-4 K) are very sensitive to the effective magnetic moments associated with the spin 1 Zeeman levels of the O(2) molecules and to the O(2) magnetic relaxation. From these measurements, the value of the D[Sz(2)-(1/3)S(2)] spin-Hamiltonian term of the triplet spin ground state of O(2) can be determined. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the measured paramagnetic O(2)-induced excess line width of the (129)Xe NMR signal agree well with the theoretical model with the spin-Hamiltonian D=0.19 meV (2.3 K), and with the reasonable assumption that the E[S(x)(2)-S(y)(2)] spin-Hamiltonian term is close to 0 meV. An anomalous temperature dependence between 1.4 K and 4.2K of the (129)Xe spin-lattice relaxation rate, T(1n)(-1)(T), is also accounted for by our model. Using an independent determination of the true O(2) concentration in the Xe-O(2) solid, the effective spin lattice relaxation time (which will be seen to be transition dependent) of the O(2) at 2.3 K and 0.96 T is determined to be approximately 1.4 x 10(-8)s. The experimental results, taken together with the relaxation model, suggest routes for bringing highly spin-polarized (129)Xe from the low temperature condensed phase to higher temperatures without excessive depolarization.  相似文献

The A(3Pi1) state of ClF is studied (1) in emission from the beta(1(3)P2) ion-pair state in a high-pressure discharge, (2) from its role in perturbations of the B(3Pi0(+)) and A'(3Pi2) states, and (3) in direct absorption from the X(1Sigma+) ground state. The last of these is obtained via a UV-labeling technique and represents the first observation of the A <-- X transition. The emission spectrum yields extensive assignments for the 0-4, 0-5, and 1-4 bands of beta --> A, with both e and f lines identified. The well-known perturbation in v = 7 of the B state is attributed to interaction with v = 9 of A. A newly identified perturbation in B(6) involves coupling with A(8). The known perturbation in B(8) may involve A(11), but other assignments cannot be ruled out. Approximate potential curves are derived for all three valence states and used to compute the vibrational factors for the perturbations, permitting extraction of the electronic coupling strengths. The B-A coupling elements are within approximately 10% of expectations for rotation-electronic coupling within a Hund's case (a) 3Pi manifold, but the strength of the perturbation between A(5) and A'(6) is only about 30% of predictions for this model. Inclusive K_{S};{0}K_{S};{0} production in ep collisions at the DESY ep collider HERA was studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 0.5 fb;{-1}. Enhancements in the mass spectrum were observed and are attributed to the production of f_{2}(1270)/a_{2};{0}(1320), f_{2};{'}(1525) and f_{0}(1710). Masses and widths were obtained using a fit which takes into account theoretical predictions based on SU(3) symmetry arguments, and are consistent with the Particle Data Group values. The f_{0}(1710) state, which has a mass consistent with a glueball candidate, was observed with a statistical significance of 5 standard deviations. However, if this state is the same as that seen in gammagamma-->K_{S};{0}K_{S};{0}, it is unlikely to be a pure glueball state.  相似文献

Collisional energy transfer processes K2[1(1) sigmau+ (nu'=2)]+He, H2-->K2[1(1) sigmau+(nu'=1,3)]+He, H2 were studied by laser induced fluorescence under gas cell conditions. During the experiments, the cell temperature was kept constant at 420K. The buffer gas pressure was varied over the range from 40 to 250 Pa, Kz molecules were irradiated with pulses of radiation from an OPO laser, populating K2[1(1) sigmau+ (nu'=2)] by photon absorption. The resulting fluorescence included the direct component emitted in the decay of the optically excited state and the sensitized components arising from collisionally populated states. The decay signal of time-resolved fluorescence from 1(1) sigmau+ (nu'=2)]-->1(1) sigmag+(nu"=0) transition was monitored. In the early period after excitation, only very little population in states v'= 1 or 3 had yet accumulated, the rate of collisional activation to the state nu'=2 was negligible. The decay curve of the nu' = 2-->nu" = 0 was treated as a single exponential function. From the measurement of the time-resolved fluorescence, the semilog plot was shown. The slope yielded the effective lifetime of the nu' = 2--> nu' = 0 transition. Based on the Stern-Volmer equation, the radiative lifetime (36 +/- 7) ns was obtained. The total cross sections for deactivation of 1(1) sigmau1 (nu'=2) state by means of collisions with He and H2 are (3.0 +/- 0.5) x 10(-16) cm2 and (6.4 +/- 1.2) x 10(-15) cm2, respectively. The radiative lifetimes of 1(1) sigmau+(nu' = 1,3) states can also be determined through time-resolved fluorescence in pure K vapor. The time-integrated intensities of 1(1)sigmau+(nu' = 1,2,3)-->1(1) sigmag+(nu"=0) transition at different He or Hz pressure were measured. The ratio of fluorescence intensities versus 1/P(He, H2) can be fitted by a straight line. The slopes yield the cross sections sigma(nu'=2-->nu'=1) = (1.4 +/- 0.5) x 10(-16) cm2 and (3.2 +/- 1.0) x 10(-15) cm2; sigma(nu'=2-->nu'=3)= (1.2 +/- 0.4) x 10(-16) cm2 and (2.6 +/- 0.9) x 10(-15) cm2 for He and H2, respectively. Cross sections for the effective quenching of the nu' = 1,2,3 states were also determined. To our knowledge, the cross-sections for these processes are reported for first time.  相似文献

Improved theoretical predictions for the fine-structure splitting of 2(3)PJ levels in helium are obtained by the calculation of contributions of order alpha5 Ry. New results for transition frequencies nu(01) = 29616943.01(17) kHz and nu(12) = 2291161.13(30) kHz disagree significantly with the experimental values, indicating an outstanding problem in bound state QED.  相似文献

The hyperfine induced 2s2p (3)P(0) --> 2s(2) (1)S(0) transition rate A(HFI) in berylliumlike (47)Ti(18+) is measured. Resonant electron-ion recombination in a heavy-ion storage ring is employed to monitor the time dependent population of the (3)P(0) state. The experimental value A(HFI)=0.56(3) s(-1) is almost 60% larger than theoretically predicted.  相似文献

利用发射光谱技术在大气压下测量了以氮气为载气的不饱和水蒸气体系针-板式正脉冲电晕放电产生的OH(A^2∑→X^2Ⅱ0—O)自由基和O(3p^5P→3s^5S^02777.4nm),Ha(3P→2S 656.3nm)活性原子的发射光谱,并由N2(C^3Ⅱu→B^3Ⅱg)的△v=-3和△v=-4振动带序发射光谱强度计算得出N2(C,v)的相对振动布居及其振动温度,进而采用高斯分布拟合准确地求出了N2(C^3Ⅱu→B^3Ⅱg)的△v= 1振动带序发射光谱强度,从而可以由N2(C^3Ⅱu→B^3Ⅱg)的△v= 1振动带序与OH(A^2∑→X^2Ⅱ0—0)的重叠发射光谱中准确求出OH(A^2∑→X^2Ⅱ0—0)自由基的发射光谱强度。由发射光谱强度得到了激发态OH(A^3∑)自由基和O(3p^5P),Ha(3P)活性原子的布居。还研究了激发态OH(A^2∑)自由基和O(3p^5P),Ha(3P)活性原子的布居随放电电压和放电频率的变化以及氧气对激发态OH(A^2∑)自由基和O(3p^5P),Ha(3P)活性原子布居的影响。  相似文献

We measure the J = 1 to J = 2 fine structure interval in the ( 3)2P state of helium to be 2 291 175.9(1.0) kHz. We use laser excitation of an atomic beam along with an integrated electro-optic modulator technique to obtain this result. The result is consistent (2.9+/-3.2 kHz) with what could be considered an earlier version of this experiment but is not in good agreement ( 20+/-5 kHz and 22+/-8 kHz) with the two other precision determinations of this interval. Two recent theoretical studies [C. Liu, Phys. Rev. A 64, 010501 (2001)]; M. Zitnik, ibid. 65, 032520 (2002)]] predict that the fluorescence lifetimes of helium doubly excited states converging to He+ N=2 should be longer than that of the He+ 2p ion state. This effect is caused by the electric field of the outer electron which, through Stark mixing, gives the inner fluorescing electron some series specific, stabilizing 2s character. We have obtained the first experimental evidence that confirms this effect by measuring the lifetime of the 2p3d(1P0) doubly excited state. This was determined to be 190+/-30 ps compared to 100 ps for the He+ 2p ion state. The measurements were performed using short pulses of synchrotron radiation to form doubly excited states and recording the arrival time of photons from fluorescence.  相似文献

We report on a search for the radiative decay Upsilon(1S)-->gammaeta(') in 61.3 pb(-1) of data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. Three decay chains were investigated, all involving eta(')-->pi(+)pi(-)eta, followed by eta-->gammagamma, eta-->pi(0)pi(0)pi(0), or eta-->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0). We find no candidate events in any of the three cases and set a combined upper limit of 1.6x10(-5) at 90% C.L., significantly smaller than the previous limit. We compare our result to other radiative Upsilon decays, to radiative J/psi decays, and to theoretical predictions.  相似文献
