Nanofluid is an innovative heat transfer fluid with superior potential for enhancing the heat transfer performance of conventional fluids. Many attempts have been made to investigate its thermal conductivity and viscosity, which are important thermophysical properties. No definitive agreements have emerged, however, about these properties. This article reports the thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of nanofluids experimentally. TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in water with volume concentration of 0.2–2 vol.% are used in the present study. A transient hot-wire apparatus is used for measuring the thermal conductivity of nanofluids whereas the Bohlin rotational rheometer (Malvern Instrument) is used to measure the viscosity of nanofluids. The data are collected for temperatures ranging from 15 °C to 35 °C. The results show that the measured viscosity and thermal conductivity of nanofluids increased as the particle concentrations increased and are higher than the values of the base liquids. Furthermore, thermal conductivity of nanofluids increased with increasing nanofluid temperatures and, conversely, the viscosity of nanofluids decreased with increasing temperature of nanofluids. Moreover, the measured thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids are quite different from the predicted values from the existing correlations and the data reported by other researchers. Finally, new thermophysical correlations are proposed for predicting the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids.  相似文献

The present paper, describes our experimental results on the viscosity of the nanofluid prepared by dispersing alumina nanoparticles (<50 nm) in commercial car coolant. The nanofluid prepared with calculated amount of oleic acid (surfactant) was tested to be stable for more than 80 days. The viscosity of the nanofluids is measured both as a function of alumina volume fraction and temperature between 10 and 50 °C. While the pure base fluid display Newtonian behavior over the measured temperature, it transforms to a non-Newtonian fluid with addition of a small amount of alumina nanoparticles. Our results show that viscosity of the nanofluid increases with increasing nanoparticle concentration and decreases with increase in temperature. Most of the frequently used classical models severely under predict the measured viscosity. Volume fraction dependence of the nanofluid viscosity, however, is predicted fairly well on the basis of a recently reported theoretical model for nanofluids that takes into account the effect of Brownian motion of nanoparticles in the nanofluid. The temperature dependence of the viscosity of engine coolant based alumina nanofluids obeys the empirical correlation of the type: log (μnf) = A exp(BT), proposed earlier by Namburu et al.  相似文献

The efficiency and effectiveness of solar energy capture and storage are to a large extent functions of the heat transfer and storage capacity of the medium used. This paper investigates the potential of using carbon nanotube (CNT)-glycol nanosuspension as such a medium, prepared by freeze drying-ultrasonic dispersing after oxidation treatment with HNO3. The influences of the mass fraction of CNTs glycol nanofluids and temperatures on photo-thermal properties, thermal conductivities and rheological behavior were investigated. The results show that CNTs with oxidation treatment exhibited good dispersing performance. Strong optical absorption of the CNTs glycol nanofluids was detected in the range of 200–2500 nm. At room temperature, 18% enhancement was found in the photo-thermal conversion efficiency of the 0.5% mass fraction CNTs glycol nanofluids in comparison to the basic fluids, without significant increase in viscosity. At 55 °C, CNTs glycol nanofluids with 4.0% mass fraction exhibited much lower viscosity and 25.4% higher thermal conductivity in comparison to that of pure glycol at room temperature.  相似文献

This article reports a comparison of the differences between using measured and computed thermophysical properties to describe the heat transfer performance of TiO2–water nanofluids. In this study, TiO2 nanoparticles with average diameters of 21 nm and a particle volume fraction of 0.2–1 vol.% are used. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids were measured by using transient hot-wire apparatus and a Bohlin rotational rheometer, respectively. The well-known correlations for calculating the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids were used for describing the Nusselt number of nanofluids and compared with the results from the measured data. The results show that use of the models of thermophysical properties for calculating the Nusselt number of nanofluids gave similar results to use of the measured data. Where there is a lack of measured data on thermophysical properties, the most appropriate models for computing the thermal conductivity and viscosity of the nanofluids are the models of Yu and Choi and Wang et al., respectively.  相似文献

Emissions from major agricultural residues were measured using a self-designed combustion system. Emission factors (EFs) of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water-soluble ions (WSIs) (K+, NH4+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl, NO3, SO42–) in smoke from wheat and rice straw were measured under flaming and smoldering conditions. The OC1/TC (total carbon) was highest (45.8% flaming, 57.7% smoldering) among carbon fractions. The mean EFs for OC (EFOC) and EC (EFEC) were 9.2 ± 3.9 and 2.2 ± 0.7 g/kg for wheat straw and 6.4 ± 1.9 and 1.1 ± 0.3 g/kg for rice straw under flaming conditions, while they were 40.8 ± 5.6 and 5.8 ± 1.0 g/kg and 37.6 ± 6.3 and 5.0 ± 1.4 g/kg under smoldering conditions, respectively. Higher EC ratios were observed in particulate matter (PM) mass under flaming conditions. The OC and EC for the two combustion patterns were significantly correlated (p < 0.01, R = 0.95 for wheat straw; p < 0.01, R = 0.97 for rice straw), and a higher positive correlation between OC3 and EC was observed under both combustion conditions. WSIs emitted from flaming smoke were dominated by Cl and K+, which contributed 3.4% and 2.4% of the PM mass for rice straw and 2.2% and 1.0% for wheat straw, respectively. The EFs of Cl and K+ were 0.73 ± 0.16 and 0.51 ± 0.14 g/kg for wheat straw and 0.25 ± 0.15 and 0.12 ± 0.05 g/kg for rice straw under flaming conditions, while they were 0.42 ± 0.28 and 0.12 ± 0.06 g/kg and 0.30 ± 0.27 and 0.05 ± 0.03 g/kg under smoldering conditions, respectively. Na+, Mg2+, and NH4+ were vital components in PM, comprising from 0.8% (smoldering) to 3.1% (flaming) of the mass. Strong correlations of Cl with K+, NH4+, and Na+ ions were observed in rice straw and the calculated diagnostic ratios of OC/EC, K+/Na+ and Cl/Na+ could be useful to distinguishing crop straw burning from other sources of atmospheric pollution.  相似文献

In the present study, flow control mechanism of single groove on a circular cylinder surface is presented experimentally using Particle image velocimetry (PIV). A square shaped groove is patterned longitudinally on the surface of the cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm. The flow characteristics are studied as a function of angular position of the groove from the forward stagnation point of the cylinder within 0°  θ  150°. In the current work, instantaneous and time-averaged flow data such as vorticity, ω streamline, Ψ streamwise, u/Uo and transverse, v/Uo velocity components, turbulent kinetic energy, TKE and RMS of streamwise, urms and transverse, vrms velocity components are utilized in order to present the results of quantitative analyses. Furthermore, Strouhal numbers are calculated using Karman vortex shedding frequency, fk obtained from single point spectral analysis. It is concluded that a critical angular position of the groove, θ = 80° is observed. The flow separation is controlled within 0°  θ < 80°. At θ = 80°, the flow separation starts to occur in the upstream direction. The instability within the shear layer is also induced on grooved side of the cylinder with frequencies different than Karman vortex shedding frequency, fk.  相似文献

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) has been widely applied in simulating fluid flow because of its attractive properties, for example, it is fully Lagrangian and mesh free. However, this method usually uses the explicit method to solve the conservation equations and in this form it is only suitable to momentum dominated flows with low viscosity. In polymer processing, the fluid is non-Newtonian with high viscosity, O(103) to O(104) Pa-s say, and the pressure is high as O(106) to O(1010) Pa. The algorithm of the standard SPH is infeasible in this case, because only very small time steps can be used for a stable simulation. We have developed an implicit SPH for non-Newtonian flow, which is completely matrix free, to solve the equation system iteratively and robustly. The artificial pressure is introduced between particles to stabilize the SPH system avoiding the tensile instability. The fluid is compressible under high pressure. Realistic state equations for polymers, such as the Tait and SSY [16] equations are adopted to describe the density/pressure relations. The method is finally applied to the simulation of moulding flow of a modified power law fluid with the zero shear rate viscosity of 1.22 × 104 Pa-s, Reynolds number of 3 × 10?4 to 6 × 10?5 and the highest pressure of O(108) to O(1010) Pa.  相似文献

The flow behavior and viscosity of liquid Zn, Sn, Cd, Bi-42 wt%Sn, Zn-7 wt%Al, and Sn-3 wt%Ag-0.5 wt%Cu were characterized and quantified with rotational rheometry experiments. Evidences from this study shows these liquid systems uniquely exhibit a shear thinning and time-independent (non-thixotropic) flow behavior in all the evaluated shear rate regimes. We have attempted to offer a physical explanation from prior-art for the observed unique flow behavior of the liquid metal systems. The strong short range atomic order in these metals significantly contribute to their flow behavior and at any shear rate the viscosity obeys the standard Arrhenius energy equation for temperature dependence.  相似文献

Nanofluid (NF) materials consisting of glycerol (Gly) and different inorganic nano oxides (TiO2, ZnO, Al2O3, and SiO2 for the oxides concentration of 0.01 wt% to the weight of Gly base fluid) were prepared by a two-step method through ultrasonic cavitation process. These nanofluids were investigated by employing an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer, 20 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS), ultrasonic interferometer, and rotational viscometer. The multiphysics of these nanofluids includes structural and optical properties, dielectric permittivity, electrical conductivity, conductivity relaxation, ultrasound velocity, adiabatic compressibility, acoustic impedance, viscosity, density, thermal conductivity, and viscoacoustic relaxation were characterized. The XRD patterns identified monodispersed and stable suspensions of these different characteristic nanoparticles in the hydrogen-bonded 3D supramolecular structure of ultra-high viscous glycerol fluid which were supported by their UV–Vis absorbance analyses. The energy band gap values of the TiO2 and ZnO containing nanofluids were found primarily ruled by the characteristic optical properties of these oxides nanomaterials. The complex dielectric and various electrical functions studied at 25 °C revealed that the suspension of different oxide nanoparticles in the glycerol fluid increased the static permittivity whereas reduced the direct current electrical conductivity which showed strong conductivity relaxation process dependence. The rheological measurements of the formulated nanofluids were performed over a shear rate range of 0.4–40 s−1 at temperatures of 25–55 °C. The linear relationship between shear rate and shear stress and also the shear rate-independent viscosity revealed the Newtonian behaviour of these nanofluids. The shear viscosity non-linearly decreased with the increase of temperature and exhibited the Arrhenius behaviour for all different oxides containing Gly-based nanofluids. The acoustic parameters of the nanofluids were altered unevenly with types of nano oxides and inferred some structure-property correlations. The promising technologically useable properties of these nanofluids were expected to impact their potential applications in optoelectronics, UV-blocking, sensing, nanodielectrics, energy storing and electric insulation, heat transfer systems, and also in materials processing for the development of innovative soft condensed devices.  相似文献

Experimental investigations and theoretical determination of effective thermal conductivity and viscosity of Al2O3/H2O nanofluid are reported in this paper. The nanofluid was prepared by synthesizing Al2O3 nanoparticles using microwave assisted chemical precipitation method, and then dispersing them in distilled water using a sonicator. Al2O3/water nanofluid with a nominal diameter of 43 nm at different volume concentrations (0.33–5%) at room temperature were used for the investigation. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids are measured and it is found that the viscosity increase is substantially higher than the increase in thermal conductivity. Both the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids increase with the nanoparticle volume concentration. Theoretical models are developed to predict thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids without resorting to the well established Maxwell and Einstein models, respectively. The proposed models show reasonably good agreement with our experimental results.  相似文献

A measurement technique of viscoelastic properties of polymers is proposed to investigate complex Poisson’s ratio as a function of frequency. The forced vibration responses for the samples under normal and shear deformation are measured with varying load masses. To obtain modulus of elasticity and shear modulus, the present method requires only knowledge of the load mass, geometrical characteristics of a sample, as well as both the amplitude ratio and phase lag of the forcing and response oscillations. The measured data were used to obtain the viscoelastic properties of the material based on a 2D numerical deformation model of the sample. The 2D model enabled us to exclude data correction by the empirical form factor used in 1D model. Standard composition (90% PDMS polymer + 10% catalyst) of silicone RTV rubber (Silastic® S2) were used for preparing three samples for axial stress deformation and three samples for shear deformation. Comprehensive measurements of modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, loss factor, and both real and imaginary parts of Poisson’s ratio were determined for frequencies from 50 to 320 Hz in the linear deformation regime (at relative deformations 10?6 to 10?4) at temperature 25 °C. In order to improve measurement accuracy, an extrapolation of the obtained results to zero load mass was suggested. For this purpose measurements with several masses need to be done. An empirical requirement for the sample height-to-radius ratio to be more than 4 was found for stress measurements. Different combinations of the samples with different sizes for the shear and stress measurements exhibited similar results. The proposed method allows one to measure imaginary part of the Poisson’s ratio, which appeared to be about 0.04–0.06 for the material of the present study.  相似文献

A commercial product of carbon nano-particles, Cabot MONACH 1300 pigment black (CMPB), was studied for basic structural information and electrochemical performance in neutral aqueous electrolytes, aiming at applications in supercapacitors. As confirmed by SEM and HRTEM, the CMPB had a hierarchical structure, containing basic 10 nm nano-spheres which combined into ca. 50 nm agglomerates which further aggregated into larger particles of micrometres. The capacitance of this commercial material was found to increase with decreasing the size of hydrous cation (Li+  Na+  K+), instead of the cation crystal radius (K+  Na+  Li+) when coupled with the same anion (Cl). In electrolytes with the same cation concentration (K+), changing the anion from the larger dianion (SO42−) to the smaller monoanion (Cl) also increased the capacitance at high potential scan rates (>50 mV/s). Increasing electrolyte concentration produced expected effect, including raising the electrode capacitance, but lowering the equivalent series resistance (ESR), charge transfer resistance (CTR), and the diffusion resistance. At higher temperatures, the CMPB exhibited slightly higher capacitance, which does not agree with the Gouy–Chapman theory on electric double layer (EDL). A hypothesis is proposed to account for the capacitance increase with temperature as a result of the CMPB opening up some micro-pores for more ions to access in response to the temperature increase.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of temperature of spruce (Picea orientalis L.) logs during peeling process on surface roughness, adhesive wettability, colour variation of veneer, and shear strength of plywood made from these veneer sheets. Veneer samples were manufactured from the logs after they were kept for 3 h and 24 h to reach to average temperatures of 52 °C and 32 °C, respectively. A fine stylus method was used for surface roughness evaluation of the veneer produced from two types of the logs and it was found that the samples peeled from the logs with a temperature of 52 °C had significantly better roughness values than those of manufactured from the logs with 32 °C at a 95% confidence level. Wettability of veneer samples was determined with contact angle measurements according to the sessile drop method. Urea formaldehyde (UF) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin drops were used in contact angle measurements. Contact angles of PF resin drops on veneers were similar for each peeling temperature while the contact angles of UF glue resin on veneers produced from the logs with 32 °C were lower than those of produced from the logs with 52 °C. Small colour difference was measured (indicated by a low ΔE value) on veneer samples depending on the log temperature. The highest shear strength value was determined for the plywood manufactured from veneers obtained from the logs with 52 °C by using UF glue.  相似文献

The present study describes the wall shear stress and the falling liquid film behavior in upward vertical slug flow of air and high viscosity oil. The frictional pressure gradient is directly related to the wall shear stress, and it is usually negative (opposite to the overall flow direction). However, in vertical slug flow, the average total wall shear stress of a slug unit may be negative (in the same direction of the overall flow), resulting in a positive frictional pressure gradient. However, this does not mean, by any way, generation of additional energy or violation of the second law of thermodynamics. The positive frictional pressure gradient phenomenon, reasons and required conditions were explained in this paper. A simplified model was developed and validated against recent experimental data of air-high viscosity oil slug flow in a 50.8 mm ID vertical pipe. The oil viscosity was in the range of 127 mPa s to 580 mPa s. Positive frictional pressure gradient appears when the liquid film wall shear stress supersede the wall shear stress in the slug body. The rate of increase of both wall shear stresses (with respect to the mixture Reynolds number) depend, not only, on the mixture Reynolds number but also, highly, on the liquid viscosity.  相似文献

The mean wake of a surface-mounted finite-height square prism was studied experimentally in a low-speed wind tunnel to explore the combined effects of incidence angle (α) and aspect ratio (AR). Measurements of the mean wake velocity field were made with a seven-hole pressure probe for finite square prisms of AR = 9, 7, 5 and 3, at a Reynolds number of Re = 3.7 × 104, for incidence angles from α = 0° to 45°. The relative thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane, compared to the prism width, was δ/D = 1.5. As the incidence angle increases from α = 0° to 15°, the mean recirculation zone shortens and the mean wake shifts in the direction opposite to that of the mean lift force. The downwash is also deflected to this side of the wake and the mean streamwise vortex structures in the upper part of the wake become strongly asymmetric. The shortest mean recirculation zone, and the greatest asymmetry in the mean wake, is found at the critical incidence angle of αcritical  15°. As the incidence angle increases from α = 15° to 45°, the mean recirculation zone lengthens and the mean streamwise vortex structures regain their symmetry. These vortices also elongate in the wall-normal direction and become contiguous with the horseshoe vortex trailing arms. The mean wake of the prism of AR = 3 has some differences, such as an absence of induced streamwise vorticity near the ground plane, which support its classification as lying below the critical aspect ratio for the present flow conditions.  相似文献

To improve the electrolyte wettability and thermal stability of polypropylene (PP) separators, nano-SiO2/poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated PP composite separators were prepared using a simple but efficient sol–gel and dip-coating method. The effects of the tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) dosage on the morphology, wettability, and thermal stability of the composite separators were investigated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and contact-angle measurements. All the composite separators gave a smaller contact angle, higher electrolyte uptake, and lower thermal shrinkage compared with the PP separator, indicating enhanced wettability and thermal stability. Unlike the case for a traditional physical mixture, SiOC covalent bonds were formed in the coating layer. The composite separator with a TEOS dosage of 7.5 wt% had a unique porous structure combining hierarchical pores with interstitial voids, and gave the best wettability and thermal stability. The ionic conductivity of the composite separator containing 7.5 wt% TEOS was 1.26 mS/cm, which is much higher than that of the PP separator (0.74 mS/cm). The C-rate and cycling performances of batteries assembled with the composite separator containing 7.5 wt% TEOS were better than those of batteries containing PP separators.  相似文献

An experimental study of the flow field in a two-dimensional wall jet has been conducted. All measurements were carried out using hot-wire anemometry. The experimental facility has a rectangular slot nozzle of high aspect ratio l/b = 100 (where l and b are the length and height slot, respectively). Mean velocities and Reynolds stresses were determined with three nozzle Reynolds numbers (Re = 1 × 104, 2 × 104 and 3 × 104) and four different inclination angles between the wall and the flow velocity at the nozzle (β = 0°, 10°, 20° and 30°). Results indicate that all wall jets are self-preserving in the developed region. Normal to the wall two regions can be identified: one similar to a plane free jet and the other similar to a boundary layer. Downstream the interaction between these two regions creates a mixed or third region. The logarithmic region increases with the distance from the nozzle and with the Reynolds number. For the inclined wall jet, the spreading rate expressed in terms of jet half-width or maximum velocity decay with respect to the streamwise distance, asymptotes to a linear law. The streamwise locations where the jet becomes self-similar are farther from the exit than in parallel wall jet. The slope of both half-width and maximum velocity decay in the developed region are affected by both wall jet inclination angle and nozzle exit Reynolds number.  相似文献

Oil–water two-phase flow experiments were conducted in horizontal ducts made of Plexiglas® to determine the in situ oil fraction (holdup) by means of the closing valves technique, using mineral oil (viscosity: 0.838 Pa s at 20 °C; density: 890 kg m−3) and tap water. The ducts present sudden contractions from 50 mm to 40 mm i.d. and from 50 mm to 30 mm i.d., with contraction ratios of 0.64 and 0.36, respectively. About 200–320 tests were performed by varying the flow rates of the phases. Flow patterns were investigated for both the up- and downstream pipe in order to assess whether relevant variations of the flow patterns across the sudden contraction take place. Data were then compared with predictions of a specific correlation for oil–water flow and some correlations for gas–water flow. A drift-flux model was also applied to determine the distribution parameter.  相似文献

Zirconia (yttria)–alumina ceramic nanocomposites were fabricated from different powders by spark plasma sintering (SPS). One powder was a commercially available nanocomposite powder TZP-3Y20A, consisting of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3-YSZ) reinforced with 20 wt% alumina, and the other, used as a comparison, was a conventional mechanically mixed powder 3YSZ-20A, a blend made of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia powder ZrO2 (3Y) and 20 wt% α-alumina powder. The effect of the sintering temperature on the densification, the sintering behavior, the mechanical properties and the microstructure of the composites was investigated. The results showed that the density increased with increasing sintering temperature, and thus, the mechanical properties were strengthened because of the increased densification. The nanocomposite powder TZP-3Y20A was easily sintered, and good mechanical properties were achieved as compared with the powder from the conventional mechanically mixed method, the maximum flexural strength and fracture toughness of which were 967 MPa and 5.27 MPa m1/2, respectively.  相似文献

In general, the shear localization process involves initiation and growth. Initiation is expected to be a stochastic process in material space where anisotropy in the elastic–plastic behavior of single crystals and inter-crystalline interactions serve to form natural perturbations to the material’s local stability. A hat-shaped sample geometry was used to study shear localization growth. It is an axi-symmetric sample with an upper “hat” portion and a lower “brim” portion with the shear zone located between the hat and brim. The shear zone length is 870–890 μm with deformation imposed through a split-Hopkinson pressure bar system at maximum top-to-bottom velocity in the range of 8–25 m/s. We present experimental results of the deformation response of tantalum and 316L stainless steel samples. The tantalum samples did not form shear bands but the stainless steel sample formed a late stage shear band. We have also modeled these experiments using both conductive and adiabatic continuum models. An anisotropic elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model with damage evolution was used within the finite element code EPIC. A Mie-Gruneisen equation of state and the rate and temperature sensitive MTS flow stress model together with a Gurson flow surface were employed. The models performed well in predicting the experimental data. The numerical results for tantalum suggested a maximum equivalent strain rate on the order of 7 × 104 s−1 in the gage section for an imposed top surface displacement rate of 17.5 m/s. The models also suggested that for an initial temperature of 298 K a temperature in the neighborhood of 900 K was reached within the shear section. The numerical results for stainless steel suggest that melting temperature was reached throughout the shear band shortly after peak load. Due to sample geometry, the stress state in the shear zone was not pure shear; a significant normal stress relative to the shear zone basis line was developed.  相似文献
