An experimental study of a fully developed turbulent channel flow and an adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent channel flow over smooth and rough walls has been performed using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The rough walls comprised two-dimensional square ribs of nominal height, k = 3 mm and pitch, p = 2k, 4k and 8k. It was observed that rib roughness enhanced the drag characteristics, and the degree of enhancement increased with increasing pitch. Similarly, rib roughness significantly increased the level of turbulence production, Reynolds stresses and wall-normal transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress well beyond the roughness sublayer. On the contrary, the distributions of the eddy viscosity, mixing length and streamwise transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were reduced by wall roughness, especially in the outer layer. Adverse pressure gradient produced a further reduction in the mean velocity (in comparison to the results obtained in the parallel section) but increased the wall-normal extent across which the mean flow above the ribs is spatially inhomogeneous in the streamwise direction. APG also reinforced wall roughness in augmenting the equivalent sand grain roughness height. The combination of wall roughness and APG significantly increased turbulence production and Reynolds stresses except in the immediate vicinity of the rough walls. The transport velocities of the turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were also augmented by APG across most part of the rough-wall boundary layer. Further, APG enhanced the distributions of the eddy viscosity across most of the boundary layer but reduced the mixing length outside the roughness sublayer.  相似文献

Flow field analysis of a turbulent boundary layer over a riblet surface   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
The near-wall flow structures of a turbulent boundary layer over a riblet surface with semi-circular grooves were investigated experimentally for the cases of drag decreasing (s +=25.2) and drag increasing (s +=40.6). One thousand instantaneous velocity fields over riblets were measured using the velocity field measurement technique and compared with those above a smooth flat plate. The field of view was 6.75 × 6.75 mm2 in physical dimension, containing two grooves. Those instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to get turbulent statistics including turbulent intensities and turbulent kinetic energy. To see the global flow structure qualitatively, flow visualization was also carried out using the synchronized smoke-wire technique under the same experimental conditions. For the case of drag decreasing (s +=25.2), most of the streamwise vortices stay above the riblets, interacting with the riblet tips frequently. The riblet tips impede the spanwise movement of the streamwise vortices and induce secondary vortices. The normalized rms velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy are small near the riblet surface, compared with those over a smooth flat plate. Inside the riblet valleys, these are sufficiently small that the increased wetted surface area of the riblets can be compensated. In addition, in the outer region (y + > 30), these values are almost equal to or slightly smaller than those for the smooth plate. For the case of drag increasing (s +=40.6), however, most of the streamwise vortices stay inside the riblet valleys and contact directly with the riblet surface. The high-speed down-wash flow penetrating into the riblet valley interacts actively with the wetted riblet surface and increases the skin friction. The rms velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy have larger values compared with those over a smooth flat plate. Received: 24 March 1999/Accepted: 10 March 2000  相似文献

In water flows with velocities of up to 9 m/s the friction drag of a body of revolution in axial flow was investigated for dependence on the body surface structure. This was done for different types of riblet film fixed on the surface with the riblet direction aligned with the flow. The lateral spacing between the triangular shaped riblets varied between 0.033 mm and 0.152 mm. In all cases the riblet spacing was equal to the riblet height. For comparison a smooth reference film was used.Depending on the Reynolds number and the non-dimensional riblet spacings +, a turbulent drag reduction of up to 9% could be achieved with riblets in comparison with the flow over a smooth surface. In the region of transition to turbulent flow and with non-dimensional riblet spacings ofs +10–15 drag reductions of up to 13% were obtained. It is therefore conjectured, that in addition to hampering the near wall momentum exchange, the riblets can delay the development of initial turbulent structures in time and space.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of adverse pressure gradient turbulent flow over two rough surfaces and a reference smooth surface. The adverse pressure gradient was produced in an asymmetric diffuser whose opening angle was 3°. The rough surfaces comprised sand grains and gravels of nominal mean diameters of 1.55 mm and 4.22 mm, respectively. The tests were conducted at an approach flow velocity of 0.5 m/s and the momentum thickness Reynolds number varied from 900 to 3000. A particle image velocimetry technique was used for the velocity measurements. Profiles of the mean velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds stress ratios, mixing length, eddy viscosity and the production terms were then obtained to document the effects of adverse pressure gradient (APG) on low Reynolds number rough-wall turbulent boundary layers. The results indicate that APG thickens the boundary layer and roughness sublayer. The APG and surface roughness also enhanced the production of turbulence as well as the turbulence level when compared with the smooth-wall data.  相似文献

The direct numerical simulation of fully developed turbulent channel flow with a sinusoidal riblet surface has been carried out at the friction Reynolds number of 110. Lateral spacing of adjacent walls in a sinusoidal riblet is varied sinusoidally in the streamwise direction. The average lateral spacing of a sinusoidal riblet is larger than the diameter of a quasi-streamwise vortex and its wetted area is smaller than that of ordinary straight-type riblets. We investigate the effect of sinusoidal riblet design parameters on the drag reduction rate and flow statistics in this paper. The parametric study shows that the maximum total drag reduction rate is approximately 9.8% at a friction Reynolds number of 110. The riblet induces downward and upward flows in the expanded and contracted regions, respectively, which contribute to periodic Reynolds shear stress. However, the random Reynolds shear stress decreases drastically as compared with the flat surface case, resulting in the reduction of total drag owing to the sinusoidal riblet. We also performed vortex tracking to discuss the motion of the vortical structure traveling over the sinusoidal riblet surface. Vortex tracking and probability analysis for the core of the vortical structure show that the vortical structure is attenuated owing to the sinusoidal riblet and follows the characteristic flow. These results show that the high skin-friction region on the channel wall is localized at the expanded region of the riblet walls. In consequence, the wetted area of the riblet decreases, resulting in the drag-reduction effect.  相似文献

A low Reynolds number κ - ε model has been used to calculate the turbulent boundary layer over riblets. Calculated mean velocity, Reynolds shear stress and kinetic energy distributions are generally in good agreement with available experimental data. The comparison between these distributions and those in a corner flow points to a significant difference between the two flows and the unlikelihood of counter-rotating vortices within the riblet grooves. One shortcoming of the present κ - ε model is the relatively slow return to a two-dimensional turbulence state as the distance from the riblet surface increases.  相似文献

The rising energy costs of the early 1970's made the public aware of the need for new innovative concepts to reduce energy usage. An innovative turbulent boundary layer skin-friction reduction program was begun at NASA Langley in 1972. Two successful drag reduction techniques have resulted from the Langley program, i.e., riblets and LEBUs. The research effort in these two areas has grown into a worldwide effort as evidenced by recent international meetings on turbulent drag reduction. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current status of the riblet and LEBU research at NASA Langley. For riblets, in particular, available riblet film data are summarized and correlated.  相似文献

The flow over drag reducing riblets is examined computationally using a time-dependent model of the viscous wall region. The flow at the upper bound of the computational domain (y +?40) is described using a streamwise eddy model consisting of two scales. A control-volume finite-element method utilizing triangular meshes is used to exactly fit the riblet cross-sectional geometry. Observations of the transient flow conditions suggest that the riblets limit the lateral spread of fluid inrushes towards the wall and retain low momentum fluid in the riblet valleys effectively isolating much of the wall from such inrushes. The generation of intermittent secondary vortices within the riblet valleys also occurs; however, these appear to be quite weak and fairly short-lived.  相似文献

In this paper we address the effectiveness of riblets on skin friction reduction under the influence of an adverse pressure gradient. The measurements were taken in a wind tunnel. Skin friction was observed with a drag balance which has a reproducibility of better than 1%. The accuracy of the balance is estimated to be less than 1% for the case of zero-pressure gradient and at most 3% for a pressure gradient. The data on skin friction reduction at zero pressure gradient were consistent with previous results and amount to 5% at dimensionless riblet width of s + = 13. We find that at all adverse pressure gradients the skin friction reduction by riblets persists. At moderate pressure gradients the reduction increases somewhat to 7%. The velocity profile which is also measured, exhibits the characteristic shape for a boundary layer with an adverse pressure gradient and agrees well with theory. From the velocity profiles measured at two stations we estimated with the help of a momentum balance the skin friction and skin friction reduction. The results differ from the drag-balance data. Due to the poor accuracy of the momentum balance method which we estimate in our case, we conclude that the results obtained with this method are less reliable than those obtained with the drag balance. This throws some doubt on previous results on drag reduction under the influence of a pressure gradient which were based on the momentum balance method.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation of viscoelastic turbulent channel flows up to the maximum drag reduction (MDR) limit has been performed. The simulation results in turn have been used to develop relationships between the flow and fluid rheological parameters, i.e. maximum chain extensibility, Reynolds number, Reτ, and Weissenberg number, Weτ and percent drag reduction (%DR) as well as the slope increment of the mean velocity profile. Moreover, based on the trends observed in the mean velocity profile and the overall momentum balance three different regimes of drag reduction (DR), namely, low drag reduction (LDR; 0  %DR  20), high drag reduction (HDR; 20  %DR  52) and MDR (52  %DR  74) have been identified and mathematical expressions for the eddy viscosity in these regimes are presented. It is found that both in LDR and HDR regimes the eddy viscosity varies with the distance from the channel wall. However, in the MDR regime the ratio of the eddy viscosity to the Newtonian one tends to a very small value around 0.1 within the channel. Based on these expressions a procedure that relies on the DNS predictions of the budgets of momentum and viscoelastic shear stress is developed for evaluating the mean velocity profile.  相似文献

Air flow field around a surface-mounted hemisphere of a fixed height for two different turbulent boundary layers (thin and thick) are investigated experimentally and numerically. Flow measurements are performed in a wind tunnel using hot-wire anemometer and streamwise component of velocity fluctuation are calculated using a special developed program of the hardware system. Mean surface pressure coefficients and velocity field for the same hemisphere are determined by the numerical simulation. Turbulent flow field and intensity are measured for two types of boundary layers and compared at various sections in both streamwise and spanwise directions. Numerical scheme based on finite volume and SIMPLE algorithm is used to treat pressure and velocity coupling. Studies are performed for Reynolds number, ReH = 32,000. Based on the numerical simulation using RNG kε turbulence model, flow pathlines, separation region and recirculation area are determined for the two types of turbulent boundary layer flows and complex flow field and recirculation regions are identified and presented graphically.  相似文献

Instantaneous velocity and wall shear stress measurements are conducted in a turbulent channel flow in the Kármán number range of Reτ = 74–400. A one-dimensional LDA system is used to measure the streamwise velocity fluctuations, and an electrochemical technique is utilized to measure the instantaneous wall shear stress. For the latter, frequency response and nonuniform correction methods are used to provide an accurate, well-resolved wall statistics database. The Reynolds number dependency of the statistical wall quantities is carefully investigated. The corrected relative wall shear stress fluctuations fit well with the best DNS data available and meet the need for clarification of the small discrepancy observed in the literature between the experimental and numerical results of such quantities. Higher-order statistics of the wall shear stress, spectra, and the turbulence kinetic energy budget at the wall are also investigated. The present paper shows that the electrochemical technique is a powerful experimental method for hydrodynamic studies involving highly unsteady flows. The study brings with it important consequences, especially in the context of the current debate regarding the appropriate scaling as well as the validation of new predictive models of near-wall turbulence.

The paper reports on particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in turbulent slot jets bounded by two solid walls with the separation distance smaller than the jet width (5–40%). In the far-field such jets are known to manifest features of quasi-two dimensional, two component turbulence. Stereoscopic and tomographic PIV systems were used to analyse local flows. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was applied to extract coherent modes of the velocity fluctuations. The measurements were performed both in the initial region close to the nozzle exit and in the far fields of the developed turbulent slot jets for Re  10,000. A POD analysis in the initial region indicates a correlation between quasi-2D vortices rolled-up in the shear layer and local flows in cross-stream planes. While the near-field turbulence shows full 3D features, the wall-normal velocity fluctuations day out gradually due to strong wall-damping resulting in an almost two-component turbulence. On the other hand, the longitudinal vortex rolls take over to act as the main agents in wall-normal and spanwise mixing and momentum transfer. The quantitative analysis indicates that the jet meandering amplitude was aperiodically modulated when arrangement of the large-scale quasi-2D vortices changed between asymmetric and symmetric pattern relatively to the jet axis. The paper shows that the dynamics of turbulent slot jets are more complex than those of 2D, plane and rectangular 3D jets. In particular, the detected secondary longitudinal vortex filaments and meandering modulation is expected to be important for turbulent transport and mixing in slot jets. This issue requires further investigations.  相似文献

One of the main aims of this work is to show to what extent drag reduction in a turbulent boundary layer can be ascribed to a purely viscous effect. A numerical and experimental study is performed in a laminar boundary layer over triangular riblets. The 2-D parabolic equations of motion are integrated using an x marching method and the discretised system is solved with the MSI algorithm. The influence of the riblet geometrical parameters and of the number of grid points is studied. Measurements are carried out in a water tunnel with forward scatter and backscatter laser-Doppler velocimetry extending within the riblets. The longitudinal velocity component measurements and computations are practically identical. Numerical results presented herein show that a slight drag reduction is obtained for s/h=1.2. It appears that, as far as friction is concerned, the wetted area is not the surface to be considered. Thus, the boundary layer over riblets would behave like a boundary layer on an equivalent smooth plate located beneath the crest plane. The numerical study in terms of the riblet height h shows best results are for h tending to zero, with the ratio s/h being equal to 1.2.  相似文献

Time-varying thrust has been measured on a rotor in shallow turbulent flow at laboratory scale. The onset flow has a turbulence intensity of 12% at mid depth and a longitudinal turbulence length scale of half the depth, about 5 times the vertical scale, typical of shallow flows. The rotor is designed to have thrust and power coefficient variations with tip speed ratio close to that of a full-scale turbine. Three extreme probability distributions give similar thrust exceedance values with the Type 1 Pareto in mid range which gives 1:100, 1:1000 and 1:10 000 exceedance thrust forces of 1.38, 1.5 and 1.59 times the mean value. With opposing waves superimposed the extreme thrust distribution has a very similar distribution to the turbulent flow only. Exceedance forces are predicted by superposition of a drag force with drag coefficient of 2.0 based on the wave particle velocity only and with an unchanged mean thrust coefficient of 0.89. These values are relevant for the design of support structures for marine turbines.  相似文献

In the present work we describe how turbulent skin-friction drag reduction obtained through near-wall turbulence manipulation modifies the spectral content of turbulent fluctuations and Reynolds shear stress with focus on the largest scales. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent channels up to Re τ = 1000 are performed in which drag reduction is achieved either via artificially removing wall-normal turbulent fluctuations in the vicinity of the wall or via streamwise-travelling waves of spanwise wall velocity. This near-wall turbulence manipulation is shown to modify turbulent spectra in a broad range of scales throughout the whole channel. Above the buffer layer, the observed changes can be predicted, exploiting the vertical shift of the logarithmic portion of the mean streamwise velocity profile, which is a classic performance measure for wall roughness or drag-reducing riblets. A simple model is developed for predicting the large-scale contribution to turbulent fluctuation and Reynolds shear stress spectra in drag-reduced turbulent channels in which a flow control acts at the wall. Any drag-reducing control that successfully interacts with large scales should deviate from the predictions of the present model, making it a useful benchmark for assessing the capability of a control to affect large scales directly.  相似文献
