The crystalline and oriented morphologies of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and β-nucleating agent (β-NA) blends molded by micro-injection were investigated via polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the addition of β-NA raised the onset crystallization temperature and the relative crystallinity of the β crystals of the micro-injection molding (MIM) specimens because of its strong heterogeneous nucleating effect in the iPP matrix. The introduction of UHMWPE, because of its “maintaining-orientation” effect, increased the thickness of the shish–kebab structure in the skin layer and induced the formation of perfect β cylindrulites that are epiphytic and symmetrical on the surface of long fibrous crystals. Furthermore, stratiform β crystals induced by the combined effects of strong shear flow field and addition of UHMWPE and β-NA were observed and investigated. Such a unique structure provides an effective way to tune the mechanics of MIM parts.  相似文献

The influence of low contents of a liquid crystalline polymer on the crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated using electron and optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. In pure iPP, the α modification was found, whereas for iPP/Vectra blends at Vectra concentration <5%, both α and β forms were observed. The amount of β phase varied from 0.23 to 0.16. Optical microscopy showed that Vectra was able to nucleate both α and β forms. Non-isothermal crystallization produces a material with a strong tendency for recrystallization of the α and β forms (αα′ and ββ′ recrystallization) leading to double endotherms for both crystalline forms in DSC thermograms. Melting thermograms after isothermal crystallization at low temperatures showed a similar behavior. At values of Tc > 119 °C for the α form and Tc > 125 °C for the β form, only one melting endotherm was observed because enough perfect crystals, not susceptible to recrystallization, were obtained. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility of blends of isotactic polypropylene and propylene-1-hexene (PH) copolymers with 11 and 21 mol% of 1-hexene (PH11 and PH21, respectively) has been studied theoretically and using DSC, DMA, and AFM techniques. Using experimental PVT data, the solubility parameter approach leads to a critical difference in 1-hexene content for melt miscibility of 17 mass% (~11 mol%) at 200 °C and 0.1 MPa. The theoretical window for miscibility is in close agreement with thermal properties of the blends. The glass transition (T g) of miscible blends (iPP/PH11 and PH11/PH21) decreases proportionally to the content of PH having the lowest T g, while immiscible blends (iPP/PH21) display invariable T g with blend composition. The same trend was extracted from the analysis of the β-relaxation by dynamic mechanical analysis. Room temperature AFM images of blends quenched from 200 °C into liquid nitrogen confirm phase segregation of iPP/PH21 in domains of 1–5 microns, while the AFM images of iPP/PH11 and PH11/PH21 lack any obvious signature of phase separation prior to crystallization.  相似文献

Nucleating agents with an ≈6.5 Å lattice parameter induced the α phase of isotactic polypropylene (iPP, α‐iPP). A 6.5 Å periodicity is also involved in the nucleating agents for the β phase of iPP (β‐iPP). The similarity in substrate periodicities suggests that some nucleating agents may induce either the α or β phase under different crystallization conditions. 4‐Fluorobenzoic acid, dicyclohexylterephthalamide, and γ‐quinacridone (the latter two are known as β‐iPP nucleators) were tested over a wide range of crystallization temperatures [up to crystallization temperature (Tc) > 145 °C]. The two former nucleating agents induce exclusively α‐iPP and β‐iPP, respectively. γ‐Quinacridone on the contrary is a versatile agent with respect to the crystal phase generated. More specifically, the same crystal face of γ‐quinacridone induces either β‐iPP or α‐iPP when Tc is below or above ≈140 °C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method was developed to determine the ultra-low glass transition temperature (Tg) of materials through physical blending via differential scanning calorimetry. According to the Fox equation for polymer blends, a blend of two fully compatible polymers has only one Tg. The single Tg is a function of the Tgs of the two simple polymers. Thus, the ultra-low Tg of one material can be obtained from the Tgs of another polymer and their blends. The error of Tg measurements depends on the measurement error of the Tgs for the blends and another polymer. The method was successfully applied to determine the Tgs of acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC), tributyl citrate (TBC) and poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEG)s with different molecular weights. The Tgs for ATBC, TBC, PEG-4000 and PEG-800 were ?57.0 °C, ?62.7 °C, ?76.6 °C and ?83.1 °C, respectively. For all the samples, the standard deviation of measurements was less than 3.3 °C, and the absolute error of measurements was theoretically not more than 5.3 °C. These results indicate that this method has acceptable precision and accuracy.  相似文献

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/chitin nanocrystal (CNC) fibers were prepared. Compared with the pure UHMWPE fibers, the ultimate tensile strength and Young’s modulus of UHMWPE/CNC fibers are improved by 15.7% and 49.6%, respectively, with the addition of chitin nanocrystals (CNCs) of 1 wt%. The melting temperature (T m) of UHMWPE/CNC fibers was higher than that of pure UHMWPE fibers. Pure UHMWPE fibers and UHMWPE/CNC fibers were characterized with respect to crystallinity, orientation and kebab structure by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is found that the CNCs act as the shish structure in UHMWPE/CNC fibers and the kebab crystals are grown around the CNCs. There was almost no difference between pure UHMWPE fibers and UHMWPE/CNC fibers in orientation. But the degree of crystallinity of various stages of UHMWPE/CNC fibers was respectively higher than the corresponding stage of pure UHMWPE fibers. Moreover, the addition of 1 wt% CNCs improved the thickness of kebab crystals and accelerated the transformation of kebab to shish.  相似文献

In this work, the characteristics of the β and γ mechanical relaxations, i.e., temperature and relative intensity, of a series of metallocene iPP samples (MPP) are analysed. The hypothesis that the temperature and the intensity of the glass transition (β relaxation) and local sub-Tg motions (γ relaxation) are related mainly to chain parameters and morphology has been corroborated. On the one hand, it has been found a critical average isotactic length (n1) around 30 propylene units, under which the β and γ dynamics are promoted with respect to the α relaxation. On the other hand, it is apparent that the features which determine the degree of constraint within the inter-lamellar region, i.e., the fraction of low-Tm crystals, drive the relative intensities of the α, β and γ relaxation processes.  相似文献

Octamethylenedicarboxylic dibenzoylhydrazide (TMC-300) was used as a nucleating agent for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) for the first time. The Avrami method and the Caze method were used to analyze the isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of iPP incorporated with TMC-300, respectively. During isothermal crystallization, the half crystallization time at 130 °C reduces from 130 s of virgin iPP to 44 s after addition of TMC-300, which reflects that TMC-300 increased the crystallization rate of iPP obviously. The crystallization activation energy decreases from 382.5 kJ mol?1 of virgin iPP to 275.3 kJ mol?1 of iPP/TMC-300. During non-isothermal crystallization, the crystallization peak temperature of iPP nucleated with TMC-300 was increased by 5.1 °C when compared to that of virgin iPP at the cooling rate of 20 °C min?1, and both the reduction of half crystallization time and the increase in peak crystallization temperature also justified that the addition of TMC-300 accelerated the crystallization of iPP.

Results of spectrophotometric and thermogravimetric studies of chitosan (CH) blends with polyvinyl alcohol (PVAL), starch (S) and hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) obtained by casting from solutions in the form of transparent films containing 0–1.0 weight fraction of CH were discussed. Blends containing S are homogeneous only in the case of low-weight fraction of S (to 0.3).On the basis of results of thermodegradation in dynamic and isothermal conditions, thermal stability of the tested systems was estimated. Thermogravimetric measurements in dynamic conditions were carried out in the temperature range of 100–450 °C at constant heating rate 15 °C/min. From thermogravimetry (TG) and DTG curves the activation energy and characteristic parameters of degradation of the tested blends were determined. The observed growth of activation energy and Tp—temperature of initial weight loss, Tmax—temperature of maximal rate and Ce—degree of conversion at the end of the measurement (at temperature 450 °C) along with the increase of polymer fraction (HPC and S) in the CH blend provides an evidence of improved thermal stability of the systems tested.Investigations in isothermal conditions in air at temperature from 100 to 200 °C confirmed appreciable improvement of CH thermal stability in the blends being tested.Infrared spectroscopic analysis of the blends showed a distinct stabilization of the process of chain scission. In the band at 1080 cm−1 associated with absorption in –C–O–C– group during degradation of the blends at temperature 200 °C much smaller decrease due to molecular scission were observed than in the case of pure CH.  相似文献

Blends of a linear unsaturated polyester (LUP, commercially named Al100) with poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL) of different molecular weights have been studied. The miscibility and crystallinity have been analyzed through FT-IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and environmental scanning electronic microscopy (ESEM). All the blends were subjected to the same heat treatment consisting of crystallizing during 45 min at constant temperature (10, 20, 30 or 40 °C). The glass transition temperature, Tg, and fusion temperature, Tfus, have been determined in the whole composition range for each blend. The Tg-composition dependence and the high degree of crystallinity detected at intermediate blend compositions denote an anomalous behaviour that could indicate the lack of homogeneity (phase separation) in the different blends studied. The ESEM measurements confirm the lack of homogeneity of the amorphous region in blends with high content of LUP. The results have been discussed as a function of the crystallization temperature and the molecular weight of PCL.  相似文献

Molecular relaxation behavior in terms of the α, β, and γ transitions of miscible PS/PPO blends has been studied by means of DMTA and preliminary work has been carried out using DSC. From DSC and DMTA (by tan δ), the observed α relaxation (Tα or Tg) of PS, PPO, and the blends, which are intermediate between the constituents, are in good agreement with earlier reports by others. In addition, the β transition (Tβ) of PS at 0.03 Hz and 1 Hz is observed at −30 and 20°C, respectively, while the γ relaxation (Tγ) is not observed at either frequency. The Tβ of PPO is 30°C at 0.03 Hz and is not observed at 1 Hz, while the Tγ is −85°C at 0.03 Hz and −70°C at 1 Hz. On the other hand, blend composition-independent β or γ relaxation observed in the blends may be a consequence of the absence of intra- or intermolecular interaction between the constituents at low temperature. Thus it is suggested that at low temperature, the β relaxation of PS be influenced solely by the local motion of the phenylene ring, and that the β or γ relaxation of PPO be predominated by the local cooperative motions of several monomer units or the rotational motion of the methyl group in PPO. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effects of drawing temperature (Td) and draw strain on the orientation and structure of semicrystalline poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films were investigated by wide angle X-ray diffraction and polarized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Semicrystalline PLA samples with two initial levels of crystallinity, Xc = 1% and 11%, were prepared by cold crystallization at 80 °C. Whatever Xc and Td, the total amount of the ordered phases (i.e. crystalline + mesophase) increased with draw strain, which could be ascribed to the formation of strain-induced mesophase at Td = 60 or 70 °C but crystalline at 80 °C. Also, the molecular orientation of both the amorphous and ordered phases increased with draw strain. Whatever Xc, the orientation of the ordered phases was insensitive to Td, whereas higher orientation in the amorphous phase was achieved at lower Td, and the trend was more significant for Xc = 1% compared with 11%.  相似文献

Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) blends were miscible in the amorphous state in all of the blend compositions studied, as evidenced by a single, composition-dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) observed for each blend composition. The variation in the Tg value with the blend composition was well predicted by the Gordon-Taylor equation, with the fitting parameter being 0.57. The cold-crystallization peak temperature decreased with increasing PTT content, while the melt-crystallization peak temperature decreased with increasing amount of the minor component. The subsequent melting behavior after both cold- and melt-crystallization exhibited melting point depression, in which the observed melting temperatures decreased with increasing amount of the minor component. During melt-crystallization, both components in the blends crystallized concurrently just to form their own crystals. The blend with 60% w/w of PTT exhibited the lowest total apparent degree of crystallinity.  相似文献

Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) and a liquid crystalline polymer, Vectra A950 (VA), were melt-blended and subjected to capillary rheometry. Effects of VA content, shear rate and temperature on viscosity and flow activation energy (Ea) were investigated. Partial fibrillation was found even though the viscosity ratio was greater than one, leading to the formation of in-situ composites. Thermal and thermogravimetric analysis of the blends suggested that they were immiscible and their thermal stabilities were enhanced. From tensile tests, the incorporation of VA improved tensile modulus, slightly decreased tensile strength, and drastically lowered elongation at break, compared to neat PTT. It was found that the blend with the best VA dispersion can be achieved at the minimum VA content (10 wt%) and lowest processing temperature (250 °C). Not only did this blend exhibit improved mechanical properties comparable to those of blends processed at temperatures closer to the crystalline-to-nematic transition of VA (~280 °C), it also shows enhanced processibility through the reduction of both melt viscosity and Ea.  相似文献

Blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and a copolyester of bisphenol-A with 50% terephthalate-50% isophthalate (PAr), before and after transesterification, have been studied by thermal and dynamic mechanical tests to determine crystallinity and phase behavior. Blends without transesterification, as prepared by solution precipitation, show a single Tg, indicating amorphous miscibility of PBT and PAr. A melting-point depression for PBT crystals is not observed; this means that PBT crystallizes excluding PAr and the entropy of melting is small. The highest fractional crystallinity for PBT is obtained at 20-35% of PAr. Transesterified blends were obtained by holding the physical blends at 250°C for up to 16 h. The transesterified systems show higher Tg's than the corresponding physical blends and also show a marked melting-point depression and lesser PBT crystallinity at the corresponding increased PAr content.  相似文献

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the segmental (α) and secondary (β) relaxations in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVPh/PMMA) blends with PVPh concentrations of 20–80% and at temperatures from ?30 to approximately glass‐transition temperature (Tg) + 80 °C. Miscible blends were obtained by solution casting from methyl ethyl ketone solution, as confirmed by single differential scanning calorimetry Tg and single segmental relaxation process for each blend. The β relaxation of PMMA maintains similar characteristics in blends with PVPh, compared with neat PMMA. Its relaxation time and activation energy are nearly the same in all blends. Furthermore, the dielectric relaxation strength of PMMA β process in the blends is proportional to the concentration of PMMA, suggesting that blending and intermolecular hydrogen bonding do not modify the local intramolecular motion. The α process, however, represents the segmental motions of both components and becomes slower with increasing PVPh concentration because of the higher Tg. This leads to well‐defined α and β relaxations in the blends above the corresponding Tg, which cannot be reliably resolved in neat PMMA without ambiguous curve deconvolution. The PMMA β process still follows an Arrhenius temperature dependence above Tg, but with an activation energy larger than that observed below Tg because of increased relaxation amplitude. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bulk precipitation polymerization and solution polymerization of butadiene with supported titanium catalyst TiCl4/MgCl2-Al(i-Bu)3 using hydrogen as molecular weight regulator has been performed to synthesize low molecular weight oligomers of trans-1,4-polybutadiene. The effect of the polymerization conditions on the relative molecular weight and structure of the polymer have been studied. Increasing the hydrogen pressure and polymerization temperature resulted in the decrease of intrinsic viscosity of the polymer. By changing the hydrogen pressure, the mole percentage of trans-1,4-unit in the as-obtained polybutadiene can be adjusted, and the maximum value could reach 97%. The degree of crystallinity of the as-synthesized oligomers was about 8–50% with the melting point of form β at about 130–140°C and form α at about 50°C. Through the grafting maleic anhydride, the polar groups were introduced onto the polybutadiene macromolecular chain, which could broaden the application of the non-polar polybutadiene.  相似文献

Poly(L ‐lactic acid)/poly(D ‐lactic acid) (PLLA/PDLA) blended with plasticizer poly(ethylene glycol) and nucleation agent TMC‐306 as‐spun fibers were prepared by melt spinning. The posttreatment was applied by hot drawing at 70°C and then heat‐treating at different temperatures for 30 minutes. In the process of hot drawing, orientation induced the further formation of the sc crystals and increased the degree of crystallinity of drawn fibers. When the hot drawing ratio reached 3 times, the properties of the fibers were relatively better. The highly oriented fibers containing pure sc crystals with high crystallinity were obtained by heat‐treating at a temperature above the melting point of α crystals. The posttreated PLLA/PDLA fibers with poly(ethylene glycol) and TMC‐306 (LDTP) obtained by hot drawing to 3 times at 70°C and then annealing at 170°C for 30 minutes exhibited the best antioxidative degradation and heat resistance properties. The initial decomposition temperature (T5%) and heat resistance of posttreated LDTP fiber were about 94°C and 20°C higher than those of the commercial PLLA fiber, respectively.  相似文献

The paper aims to study blend properties of biodegradable polymers of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and polylactide (PLA) prepared by melt mixing. Blend compositions based on PHBV/PLA were investigated according to the following weight ratios, i.e. 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100 wt%. The study showed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that blends of PHBV/PLA are not miscible. This is consistent with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data which indicate the presence of two distinct glass transition temperatures (Tg) and melting temperatures (Tm), attributed to the neat polymers, over all the range of blend compositions. Water and oxygen barrier properties of PHBV/PLA blends are significantly improved with increasing the PHBV content in the blend. Further, morphological analyzes indicated that increasing the PHBV content in the polymer blends results in increasing the PLA crystallinity due to the finely dispersed PHBV crystals acting as a filler and a nucleating agent for PLA. On the other hand, the addition of PLA to the blend results in a very impressive increase in the complex viscosity of PHBV. Moreover, the rheological data showed that, excluding the specific behavior of the neat polymers at low frequencies, i.e. less than 0.1 Hz, the complex viscosity of PHBV/PLA blends fits the mixing law well.  相似文献

Melt‐crystallized, low molecular weight poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) consisting of α crystals was uniaxially drawn by solid‐state extrusion at an extrusion temperature (Text) of 130–170 °C. A series of extrusion‐drawn samples were prepared at an optimum Text value of 170 °C, slightly below the melting temperature (Tm) of α crystals (~180 °C). The drawn products were characterized by deformation flow profiles, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) melting thermograms, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXD), and small‐angle X‐ray scattering as a function of the extrusion draw ratio (EDR). The deformation mode in the solid‐state extrusion of semicrystalline PLLA was more variable and complex than that in the extensional deformation expected in tensile drawing, which generally gave a mixture of α and β crystals. The deformation profile was extensional at a low EDR and transformed to a parabolic shear pattern at a higher EDR. At a given EDR, the central portion of an extrudate showed extensional deformation and the shear component became progressively more significant, moving from the center to the surface region. The WAXD intensities of the (0010)α and (003)β reflections on the meridian as well as the DSC melting thermograms showed that the crystal transformation from the initial α form to the oriented β form proceeded rapidly with increasing EDR at an EDR greater than 4. Furthermore, WAXD showed that the crystal transformation proceeded slightly more rapidly at the sheath region than at the core region. This fact, combined with the deformation profiles (shear at the sheath and extensional at the core), indicated that the crystal transformation was promoted by shear deformation under a high pressure rather than by extensional deformation. Thus, a highly oriented rod consisting of only β crystals was obtained by solid‐state extrusion of melt‐crystallized, low molecular weight PLLA slightly below Tm. The structure and properties of the α‐ and β‐form crystals were also studied. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 95–104, 2002  相似文献
