We present an extensive set of isothermal-isobaric first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations of liquid silicon over a temperature range of 950-1700 K. We find that the tetrahedral order gradually grows upon cooling to approximately 1200 K, but that the growth accelerates significantly below approximately 1200 K. This growth process gives rise to anomalous changes in density and liquid structure upon supercooling. In particular, we find that the atomic coordination number remains constant to approximately 1200 K and then begins to decrease below approximately 1200 K, which resolves the existing controversy regarding liquid structure in the supercooled regime [T. Many glass formers show the simultaneously existence of two or more relevant elementary processes (α, β, …). The extrapolation of α and βJG (Johari-Goldstein) processes to higher temperatures leads often to a bifurcation like behavior of these processes. It will be predicted that in general a crossing or a real bifurcation between an α process and βJG process is excluded. Both processes avoid each other near and above the apparent bifurcation region. Furthermore, the α process shows strong decreasing of the intensity with increasing temperature close to this regime.  相似文献

Pattern patterns, or phyllotaxis, the arrangements of phylla (flowers, leaves, bracts, florets) in the neighborhood of growth tips, have intrigued natural scientists for over four hundred years. Prominent amongst the observed features is the fact that phylla lie on families of alternately oriented spirals and that the numbers in these families belong to subsets  {m j } of the integers defined by the Fibonacci rule m j + 1 = m j  + m j − 1. The corresponding patterns, which we call Fibonacci patterns, are widespread and universal on plants. Our goal in this paper is to ask if they may also be seen in other physical structures and to try to quantify the circumstances under which one may expect Fibonacci patterns to occur.  相似文献

We study the type-II superstrings in four dimensions by studying vacua where massless chiral multiplets transform as complex representations of the non-abelian gauge group. We show that the gauge group can only be SU(3) and that such fields transform as 3 of SU(3). However, attempts to obtain the theory with N=1 supergravity fail. It turns out that the “different” constructions via asymmetric orbifolds give the same massless spectrum with necessarily N=2 supergravity.  相似文献

A traditional assumption in quantitative ecology is that the asymptotic state of the model determines what can be observed in the evolution of the system. It is suggested, however, that irregular transient behaviors may be more relevant than the long term behaviors. Here we investigate how often transient dynamics can be expected in spatially extended ecological systems. Our study suggests that although chaotic transient dynamics indeed exist, sustained dynamics may be more prevalent than transient ones due to the high dimensionality of such systems.  相似文献

The independence of the constitutive functions of a thermoelastic material compatible with the Clausius-Duhem inequality is analysed. The constitutive functions for the absolute temperature and entropy are shown to be determined (to within a change of a unit for the absolute temperature and the entropy constant) by the constitutive functions for the stress tensor and the heat flux vector. Hence two constitutive functions are sufficient to specify a thermoelastic material.  相似文献

Cryogenic cluster beam experiments have provided crucial insights into the evolution of the metallic state from the atom to the bulk. Surprisingly, one of the most fundamental metallic properties, the ability of a metal to efficiently screen electric fields, is still poorly understood in small clusters. Theory has predicted that many small Na clusters are unable to screen charge inhomogeneities and thus have permanent dipole moments. High precision electric deflection experiments on cryogenically cooled Na(N) (N<200) clusters show that the electric dipole moments are at least an order of magnitude smaller than predicted, and are consistent with zero, as expected for a metal. The polarizabilities of Na clusters also show metal sphere behavior, with fine size oscillations caused by the shell structure.  相似文献

We present a model for the structure of binary mixtures of smectic compounds in freely suspended films of 2-7 layers. The compounds are the hexyl (6AB) and dodecyl (10AB) homologues of p, p'-dialkylazoxybenzene that differ by about 40% in molecular length. X-ray reflectivity indicates that no demixing occurs between 6AB and 10AB molecules, while also there is no indication found of increased roughness at the film surfaces. However, the surface layers are somewhat expanded compared to the interior layers. This can be explained by backfolding of the dodecyl end chains of 10AB molecules at the surface via two gauche kinks, which ensures dense packing. This model is supported by surface tension measurements that indicate an increased amount of alkyl groups at the surfaces.  相似文献

It has recently been emphasized again that the very existence of stationary stable localized structures with short-range interactions might allow one to store information in nonequilibrium media, opening new perspectives on information storage. We show how to use generalized topological entropies to measure aspects of the quantities of storable and nonstorable information. This leads us to introduce a measure of the long-term stably storable information. As a first example to illustrate these concepts, we revisit a mechanism for the appearance of stationary stable localized structures that is related to the stabilization of fronts between structured and unstructured states (or between differently structured states).  相似文献

Characteristic relaxation times τ of the microscopic correlation in o-terphenyl and glycerol were obtained by a time-domain interferometry method using nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation. From the temperature dependence of τ, a new decoupling temperature 278 K, which is below the conventional decoupling temperature 290 K, was obtained for o-terphenyl. Furthermore, we found a liquid-like relation between τ and q (momentum transfer) as $\tau \propto q^{-2}$ at 285 K in o-terphenyl and 260 and 265 K in glycerol. However, an anomalous q dependence of the slow β relaxation time, $\tau \propto q^{-2.9}$ and q ?3.8, was observed in deeply supercooled (265 K) and glass (240 K) states, respectively, in o-terphenyl, indicating specially restricted dynamics of the slow β process.  相似文献

A water meniscus naturally forms in air between an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip and a substrate. This nanoscale meniscus produces a capillary force on the AFM, and also serves as a molecular transport channel in dip-pen nanolithography (DPN). A stable meniscus is a necessary condition for DPN and for the validity of the Kelvin equation commonly applied to AFM experiments. Lattice gas Monte Carlo simulations show that, due to thermal fluctuation, a stable meniscus has a lower limit in width. We find a minimum width of 5 molecular diameters (1.9 nm) when the tip becomes atomically sharp (terminated by a single atom).  相似文献

For a subset S of g* the given connection is S-fat (Weinstein, [5]) if for every in S the form ° is nondegenerate on each horizontal subspace in TP.Let K be a compact group and K/H be its coadjoint orbit. The orthogonal projection t h defines a connection on the principal H-bundle K K/H. We show that this connection is fat off certain walls of Weyl chambers in h*. We then apply the result to the construction of symplectic fiber bundles over K/H. As an example, we show how higher-dimensional coadjoint orbits fiber symplectically over lower-dimensional orbits.  相似文献
