A model for the analysis of nonlinear interactive problems between TE and TM waves based on the resonance technique

A simple and easily programmable approach based on the resonance method has been developed for analysing the nonlinear interaction between TE and TM waves. The model is oriented to be applicable to complicated nonlinear interactive problems, such as multilayer dielectric structures with arbitrary nonlinear media, two-dimensional nonlinear guides, nonisotropic nonlinear media, etc. In this paper, the five-layer waveguiding configuration containing two nonlinear media, along with a linear film of arbitrary refractive index profile, is treated.The dielectric tensor considered is of more general nonlinearity and not only the Kerr type. The theory is illustrated by a set of numerical results in which loci of interactive waves in the _TE–_TE plane, field profiles and guided powers are presented. Some useful conclusions are derived.     

The separation of TM and TE wave in multi-layer metamaterial structure

A mixed-structure form of one-dimensional metamaterial structure composed of single negative permittivity material and anisotropic metamaterial has been investigated in this paper. Such a multi-layer metamaterial structure constitutes special resonant structures, which can be used to control wave propagation and realize the complete separation of TM and TE wave by choosing specific parameters. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculations have been performed to confirm the above results. Specifically, augments in incident angles of TM and TE waves make complete transmission frequencies right shift, and the thicknesses of this resonant structure determine propagation modes and propagation frequencies.     

On the magnetic structure of a hexagonal Ising antiferromagnet

Domain wall free energies are calculated in a hexagonal Ising antiferromagnet and shown to be very small compared with those in an ordinary two-sublattice antiferromagnet. It is suggested that the magnetic structure of its higher temperature ordered phase is one in which many domains are tangled with each other. Some comments are given on experimental results in CsCoCl₃ and CsCoBr₃.     

Anomalous absorption of TM electromagnetic waves by an ultrathin layer: optical analog of liquid friction

A strong maximum of absorption (as much as 100%) of bulk TM electromagnetic waves by an ultrathin film with imaginary dielectric permittivity is shown to exist at some optimal film thickness. This typical thickness is usually much smaller than the wavelength and the wave penetration depth in the material of the film. The absorptivity maximum increases and the typical thickness decreases with increasing dielectric permittivity of the layer. An optical analog of linear (liquid) friction is discussed. A frictional contact approximation for TM electromagnetic waves is analyzed, and relevant boundary conditions with an optical coefficient of friction are derived.

Resonant nano-and microstructured media: Left-handed properties and negative refraction of electromagnetic waves

In this work, a brief review of the modern state of investigations in the field of linear and nonlinear electrodynamics is given for resonant nano-and microstructured composite media (metamaterials), whose effective permittivities and permeabilities can take negative values. Some promising lines of investigations and possible applications are discussed.     

Refraction of <Emphasis Type="Italic">s</Emphasis>- and <Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis>-polarized electromagnetic waves at the interface between a nonmagnetic insulator and an easy-axis centroantisymmetric antiferromagnet

Using the example of an easy-axis antiferromagnet with a magnetic structure of 4 _z ⁻2 _x ⁺ I ⁻ the effect of antisymmetric magnetoelectric interaction on the nature of the refraction of the bulk s- or p-polarized electromagnetic waves, incident from outside at any angle to the surface of the magnet, is studied analytically. The easy magnetic axis is collinear to the normal to the medium interface.     

Interaction of space-charge waves in an electron beam with electromagnetic waves in a longitudinal magnetic field

The effect of space charge on the interaction between an electron beam and an electromagnetic wave in a longitudinal magnetic field has been considered. The equations describing the interaction processes have been formulated within the two-dimensional linear theory and solved using the dispersion-equation approach and the successive approximation method.     

Resonant interaction between intense electromagnetic waves during ionization of an atom

Resonant interaction through the continuum between two intense electromagnetic waves of different frequencies during ionization of an atom is considered. A general solution of the problem is found by using a procedure based on the application of the Laplace transform to the equations for the time-dependent amplitudes of the probability. When one of the EM waves is considerably weaker than the other, the dynamics of the absorption of light by an atom are investigated, and a final value for the ionization probability in the illumination region is found.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 1, pp. 63–70, January, 1978.     

Reflection and refraction of surface acoustic waves by a periodic domain structure

Reflection and refraction of surface acoustic waves by a periodic domain structure formed in lithium niobate is studied. A second harmonic generation is observed. A mechanism underlying the linear and nonlinear interactions of acoustic waves with a periodic domain structure is proposed.
