It is widely accepted that in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with adverse pressure gradient (APG) an outer peak usually appears in the profile of streamwise Reynolds stress. However, the effect of APG on this outer peak is not clearly understood. In this paper, the effect of APG is analysed using the numerical and experimental results in the literature. Because the effect of upstream flow is inherent in the TBL, we first analyse this effect in TBLs with zero pressure gradient on flat plates. Under the individual effect of upstream flow, an outer peak already appears in the profile of streamwise Reynolds stress when the TBL continues developing in the streamwise direction. The APG accelerates the appearance of the outer peak, instead of being a trigger.

This paper presents numerical results for the receptivity of three laminar boundary layers with zero (ZPG), adverse (APG) and favourable (FPG) pressure gradients. Each boundary layer is subjected to a series of simple freestream waveforms which can be considered as constituent parts of either an isotropic or a non-isotropic turbulent freestream. Each freestream waveform has a single frequency in each spatial direction and is divided into two mutually perpendicular components. The first component has a zero spanwise velocity and hence lies in the streamwise normal plane whereas the second component lies in a plane which is perpendicular both to this plane and the spatial frequency vector. High boundary layer receptivities are only obtained for a minority of these waveforms and so only the resulting flow structures for these waveforms are considered in detail. The dominant flow structures are identified as either Tollmien Schlichting (T-S) waves or streaky structures. The streaky structures can be induced by both freestream components, but the response to the second component, which results in streamwise vortices in the freestream, is considerably stronger and occurs over a much larger streamwise frequency range. The boundary layer is only receptive to a relatively narrow band of spanwise wavelengths ranging from approximately one to four times the local boundary layer thickness. The APG leads to receptivities which are more than double those for the FPG case. The ratio of the freestream fluctuation streamwise wavelength to the distance from the plate leading edge is identified as an important influential parameter for receptivity leading to streaks. Significant T-S activity is only observed for APG, but is also detected for ZPG.

The turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) in an adverse pressure gradient (APG, β = 1.45) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is explored here by using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data; β is the Clauser pressure gradient parameter. For comparison, the DNS data for a zero pressure gradient (ZPG) TBL is included. The interface is extracted with an approach based on enstrophy criteria. Depending on the enstrophy, the outer boundary layer flow can be classified into the free stream, boundary layer wake, and intermittent flow regimes. The fractal dimension of the interface is obtained by using the box-counting algorithm, and was found to be constant over a long range of box sizes. The TNTI shows a monofractal behavior. The geometric complexity of a TNTI can be determined in terms of the genus, which is defined as the number of handles in a geometric object. We examine the volume and projection area of the genus of the TNTI to analyze the entrainment process. The geometric complexity of the APG TBL interface and the local entrainment are greater than those of the ZPG TBL, as is evident in the increases in the genus near the interface. The local entrainment velocity is dominantly affected by the viscous diffusion at the interface.

Generating an adverse pressure gradient (APG), using a rotating cylinder in the proximity of a plane wall under a laminar freestream flow, is studied numerically in this work. The magnitude of the generated APG is a function of the gap, G, between the cylinder and the wall, and the rotational speed of the cylinder, Ω. The flow in such a configuration is characterized by periodic transient vortex shedding at high Reynolds number. A numerical model for the computation of the transient flow for this configuration is developed using the ANSYS CFD simulation tool. The model is validated against published experimental and numerical data for similar flow configurations and excellent agreement is observed. A parametric study is carried out for different combinations of G and Ω for two different Reynolds numbers of 200 and 1000 to examine the development of the resulting separation bubble due to the generated APG. The mechanism of the boundary layer separation over the plane wall and the corresponding wake dynamics is investigated. Results are presented in terms of the distribution of the pressure coefficient as well as skin friction coefficient along the wall and flow patterns around and downstream of the cylinder in the proximity of the wall. The results of these computations confirm that using a rotating cylinder over a plane wall in a freestream flow is an effective technique to generate a controlled range of adverse pressure gradients.

The goal of this study is to present a first step towards establishing criteria aimed at assessing whether a particular adverse-pressure-gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) can be considered well-behaved, i.e., whether it is independent of the inflow conditions and is exempt of numerical or experimental artifacts. To this end, we analyzed several high-quality datasets, including in-house numerical databases of APG TBLs developing over flat-plates and the suction side of a wing section, and five studies available in the literature. Due to the impact of the flow history on the particular state of the boundary layer, we developed three criteria of convergence to well-behaved conditions, to be used depending on the particular case under study. (i) In the first criterion, we develop empirical correlations defining the R e ?? -evolution of the skin-friction coefficient and the shape factor in APG TBLs with constant values of the Clauser pressure-gradient parameter β = 1 and 2 (note that β = δ ?/τ w dP e /dx, where δ ? is the displacement thickness, τ w the wall-shear stress and dP e /dx the streamwise pressure gradient). (ii) In the second one, we propose a predictive method to obtain the skin-friction curve corresponding to an APG TBL subjected to any streamwise evolution of β, based only on data from zero-pressure-gradient TBLs. (iii) The third method relies on the diagnostic-plot concept modified with the shape factor, which scales APG TBLs subjected to a wide range of pressure-gradient conditions. These three criteria allow to ensure the correct flow development of a particular TBL, and thus to separate history and pressure-gradient effects in the analysis.

A DNS database is presented to document third- and fourth-order moments and their budgets for fully developed plane-channel flow and for strained plane-channel flow. The effect of straining has a similar effect on statistics, such as the skewness and flatness of velocities, as in an adverse-pressure-gradient (APG) boundary layer. In addition to higher-order statistics, some modeling implications are also described, including issues related to decomposition of the velocity–pressure gradient correlations, the assumption of dissipation isotropy and a fourth-order turbulence time scale. An analysis of two-point correlations along the inhomogeneous direction is made to include the effects of APG straining. This reveals the advantage of a one-point length-scale based on wall-normal velocity fluctuations as an alternative to the traditionally used length-scale based on turbulence kinetic energy. The present study should prove to be useful for turbulence modelers in need of data to develop and assess higher-than-second-order Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes closure models.

An experimental study of a fully developed turbulent channel flow and an adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent channel flow over smooth and rough walls has been performed using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The rough walls comprised two-dimensional square ribs of nominal height, k = 3 mm and pitch, p = 2k, 4k and 8k. It was observed that rib roughness enhanced the drag characteristics, and the degree of enhancement increased with increasing pitch. Similarly, rib roughness significantly increased the level of turbulence production, Reynolds stresses and wall-normal transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress well beyond the roughness sublayer. On the contrary, the distributions of the eddy viscosity, mixing length and streamwise transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were reduced by wall roughness, especially in the outer layer. Adverse pressure gradient produced a further reduction in the mean velocity (in comparison to the results obtained in the parallel section) but increased the wall-normal extent across which the mean flow above the ribs is spatially inhomogeneous in the streamwise direction. APG also reinforced wall roughness in augmenting the equivalent sand grain roughness height. The combination of wall roughness and APG significantly increased turbulence production and Reynolds stresses except in the immediate vicinity of the rough walls. The transport velocities of the turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were also augmented by APG across most part of the rough-wall boundary layer. Further, APG enhanced the distributions of the eddy viscosity across most of the boundary layer but reduced the mixing length outside the roughness sublayer.

The characteristics of turbulent boundary layer flows with adverse pressure gradients (APGs) differ significantly from those of canonical boundary layers. We have investigated the effects of an APG on the higher-order moments and spectra of velocity fluctuations. The local wavelet spectra reveal a large difference in energy-containing frequencies of streamwise and wall-normal components of turbulent velocities, which results in smaller Reynolds shear stress production. Moreover, an analysis of bispectra in the Fourier space has revealed that non-local interactions, consisting of streamwise fluctuating velocity with low frequency and wall-normal velocity with high frequency, occur in the APG flow. However, the small-scale motions are not affected by imposing an APG.

A mathematical model was developed for three‐dimensional (3‐D) simulation of free surface flows. In this model, the flow depth is divided into a number of layers and shallow water equations are integrated in each layer to derive the hydrodynamic equations. To give a general form to this model, each layer is assumed to be non‐horizontal with varying thickness in the flow domain. A non‐orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system is employed in the model, to allow for flexibility in dealing with the irregular geometry of natural watercourses. Due to the similarity in governing equations, two‐dimensional (2‐D) depth averaged programs can be developed into a multi‐layer model. The development for a depth averaged program and its numerical scheme is described in this paper. Experimental data and semi‐analytical solutions are used to evaluate the performance of the model. Three different cases of open channel flow are tested: 1‐flow in a straight open channel, 2‐the flow development region in a channel, and 3‐flow in a meandering channel. It is shown that the model has the capability to predict velocity distribution and secondary flows in complex 3‐D flow conditions. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to examine the effects of surface roughness and adverse pressure gradient (APG) on the development of a turbulent boundary layer. Hot-wire anemometry measurements were carried out using single and X-wire probes in all regions of a developing APG flow in an open return wind tunnel test section. The same experimental conditions (i.e., T U ref, and C p) were maintained for smooth, k + = 0, and rough, k + = 41–60, surfaces with Reynolds number based on momentum thickness, 3,000 < Re θ < 40,000. The experiment was carefully designed such that the x-dependence in the flow field was known. Despite this fact, only a very small region of the boundary layer showed a balance of the various terms in the integrated boundary layer equation. The skin friction computed from this technique showed up to a 58% increase due to the surface roughness. Various equilibrium parameters were studied and the effect of roughness was investigated. The generated flow was not in equilibrium according to the Clauser (J Aero Sci 21:91–108, 1954) definition due to its developing nature. After a development region, the flow reached the equilibrium condition as defined by Castillo and George (2001), where Λ = const, is the pressure gradient parameter. Moreover, it was found that this equilibrium condition can be used to classify developing APG flows. Furthermore, the Zagarola and Smits (J Fluid Mech 373:33–79, 1998a) scaling of the mean velocity deficit, U δ*/δ, can also be used as a criteria to classify developing APG flows which supports the equilibrium condition of Castillo and George (2001). With this information a ‘full APG region’ was defined.
