A study is made of the problem of hypersonic flow of an inviscid perfect gas over a convex body with continuously varying curvature. The solution is sought in the framework of the asymptotic theory of a strongly compressed gas [1–4] in the limit M when the specific heat ratio tends to 1. Under these assumptions, the disturbed flow is situated in a thin shock layer between the body and the shock wave. At the point where the pressure found by the Newton-Buseman formula vanishes there is separation of the flow and formation of a free layer next to the shock wave [1–4]. The singularity of the asymptotic expansions with respect to the parameter 1 = ( –1)/( + 1) associated with separation of the strongly compressed layer has been investigated previously by various methods [3–9]. Local solutions to the problem valid in the neighborhood of the singularity have been obtained for some simple bodies [3–7]. Other solutions [7, 9] eliminate the singularity but do not give the transition solution entirely. In the present paper, an asymptotic solution describing the transition from the attached to the free layer is constructed for a fairly large class of flows.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 99–105, January–February, 1982.

A Capillary Microstructure of the Wetting Front
This article reports the experimental results of a study of the wetting-front microscale structure formed only by capillary forces in homogeneous and random etched glass capillary models. In the homogeneous model, water propagates through the capillary system, evenly filling the capillaries across the direction of flow. Air is trapped by the pinch-off mechanism inside the pore bodies in the form of individual bubbles. The experiments specified three consecutive steps of the pinch-off mechanism, film flow, snap-off, and interface movement. In the random model, both the bypass and pinch-off, forming bypass/cut-off mechanism, create residual air structure. Bypass traps air inside large capillary-pore aggregates which are bounded by small-diameter capillaries in where pinch-off traps air in the adjacent pores. An analysis of the residual air distribution versus depth below the surface in the homogeneous and random micromodels made it possible to identify three successive zones, namely a transition zone, a transmission zone, and a wetting-and-front zone. In the transition zone, the residual air content increases with depth from zero to the constant value in the transmission zone where it remains practically constant. The capillary processes within the wetting-and-front combined zone govern air replacement with wetting and formation of the transmission zone.

Temperature dependence of surface tension of pure refrigerants from triple point up to the critical point
The surface tension of six fluids (SF6, CCl3F, CCl2F2, CClF3, CBrF3, CHClF2) have been measured by means of a modified capillary rise method. The liquid vapor densities, which are needed to calculate the surface tension, have partly been determined by means of refractive indices simultaneously measured in the same apparatus. The temperature dependence of the surface tension is described by an extended van der Waals power law =O(Tc-T)(1+...). For simple fluids one term and for polar and associating fluids two terms are necessary and sufficient. The critical exponent is found to be 1.284 ± 0.005 and nearly independent of the molecular structure.

In this paper, the flow of a visco-elastic liquid between two parallel plates has been studied when one plate is stationary and the other plate suddenly starts oscillating. Both finite Fourier sine transform and Laplace transform technique have been employed to solve the basic differential equations. The flow phenomenon has been characterized by the parameters, and and the effects of these on the flow characteristics have been studied through several graphs.Late professor of the department, who died in an accident on 7th July 1978.

The character of stability loss of the circular Couette flow, when the Reynolds number R passes through the critical value R0, is investigated within a broad range of variation of the wave numbers. The Lyapunov-Schmidt method is used [1, 2]; the boundary-value problems for ordinary differential equations arising in the case of its realization are solved numerically on a computer. It is shown that the branching character substantially depends on the wave number . For all a, excluding a certain interval (1, 2), the usual postcritical branching takes place: at a small supercriticality the circular flow loses stability and is softly excited into a secondary stationary flow — stable Taylor vortices. For wave numbers from the interval (1,2) a hard excitation of Taylor vortices takes place: at a small subcriticality R=R02 the secondary mode is unstable and merges with the Couette flow for 0; however, for a small supercriticality in the neighborhood of a circular flow there exist no stationary modes which are different.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, pp. 132–135, May–June, 1976.

By utilizing available experimental data for net energy transfer spectra for homogeneous turbulence, contributions P(, ) to the energy transfer at a wavenumber from various other wavenumbers are calculated. This is done by fitting a truncated power-exponential series in and to the experimental data for the net energy transfer T(), and using known properties of P(, ). Although the contributions P(, ) obtained by using this procedure are not unique, the results obtained by using various assumptions do not differ significantly. It seems clear from the results that for a region where the energy entering a wavenumber band dominates that leaving, much of the energy entering the band comes from wavenumbers which are about an order of magnitude smaller. That is, the energy transfer is rather nonlocal. This result is not significantly dependent on Reynolds number (for turbulence Reynolds numbers based on microscale from 3 to 800). For lower wavenumbers, where more energy leaves than enters a wavenumber band, the energy transfer into the band is more local, but much of the energy then leaves at distant wavenumbers.

The flow of a viscoelastic liquid driven by the steadily rotating bottom cover of a cylindrical cup is investigated. The flow field and the shape of the free surface are determined at the lowest significant orders of the regular domain perturbation in terms of the angular velocity of the bottom cap. The meridional field superposed on a primary azimuthal field shows a structure of multiple cells. The velocity field and the shape of the free surface are strongly effected by the cylinder aspect ratio and the elasticity of the liquid. The use of this flow configuration as a free surface rheometer to determine the first two Rivlin-Ericksen constants is shown to be promising.Nomenclature R, ,Z Coordinates in the physical domain D - , , Coordinates in the rest stateD 0 - r, ,z Dimensionless coordinates in the rest stateD 0 - Angular velocity - Zero shear viscosity - Surface tension coefficient - Density - Dimensionless surface tension parameter - 1, 2 The first two Rivlin-Ericksen constants - Stream function - Dimensionless second order meridional stream function - * Dimensionless second normal stress function - 2 Dimensionless sum of the first and second normal stress functions - N 1,N 2 The first and second normal stress functions - n Unit normal vector - D Stretching tensor - A n nth order Rivlin-Ericksen tensor - S Extra-stress - u Velocity field - U Dimensionless second order meridional velocity field - V Dimensionless first order azimuthal velocity field - p Pressure - Modified pressure field - P Dimensionless second order pressure field - J Mean curvature - a Cylinder radius - d Liquid depth at rest - D Dimensionless liquid depth at rest - h Free surface height - H Dimensionless free surface height at the second order

This paper discusses formulation of the total problem of flow of an incompressible liquid over a body, with formation of a closed stationary separation zone as Re . The scheme used is based on the method of matched asymptotic expansions [1]. Following [1], it is postulated that the separated zone is developed (i.e., it is not infinitely fragmented and does not vanish as Re ), and the flow inside it has a definite degree of regularity with respect to Re. With these hypotheses we can use the Prandtl-Batchelor theorem [2], which states that, in the limit as Re , a region of circulating flow becomes vortex flow of an inviscid liquid with constant vorticity . Therefore, a basis for constructing matched asymptotic expansions is the vortex-potential problem (the problem of determining a stream function , satisfying the equation = 0 in the region of translational motion and the equation = in a certain region, unknowna priori, of circulating motion). In the general case the solution of the vortex-potential problem depends on two parameters: the total pressure po and the vorticity in the separated zone. These parameters appear in the condition for matching the solutions of the first and second boundary-layer approximations (at the boundary of the separated zone for the end Re values) with the corresponding solutions for the inviscid flow. It is shown in the present paper that the conditions for matching the cyclic boundary layer with the external translational flow are the same additional relations which allow us to close the total problem. Thus, in using the method of matched asymptotic expansions to solve the problem of flow over a body with closed stationary separation zones one must simultaneously consider no less than two approximations.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 2, pp. 28–37, March–April, 1978.The authors thank G. Turbulent tube flow and the flow through a porous medium of aqueous hydroxypropylguar (HPG) solutions in concentrations from 100 wppm to 5000 wppm is investigated. Taking the rheological flow curves into account reveals that the effectiveness in turbulent tube flow and the efficiency for the flow through a porous medium both start at the same onset wall shear stress of 1.3 Pa. The similarity of the curves = ( w ) and = ( w ), respectively, leads to a simple linear relation / =k, where the constantk or proportionality depends uponc. This offers the possibility to deduce (for turbulent tube flow) from (for flow through a porous medium). In conjunction with rheological data, will reveal whether, and if yes to what extent, drag reduction will take place (even at high concentrations). The relation of our treatment to the model-based Deborah number concept is shown and a scale-up formula for the onset in turbulent tube flow is deduced as well.

A number of authors have critically examined semiempirical mixing length theories [1]. A defect of these theories is connected with the fact that the magnitude of the mixing length, which is assumed to be small in constructing the theory, turns out in experiments to be comparable with the characteristic dimensions of the flow region. Thus, the concept of volume convection [2–4] or integral diffusion [5], which is understood to be a transfer mechanism in which the friction stress is not expressed in terms of the velocity gradient, is introduced along with the concept of gradient diffusion. In addition, there are a number of experimental papers [6] in which it is shown that the turbulent friction stress cannot be equal to zero at the place in the flow where the derivative of the velocity is equal to zero. Mixing length theory does not describe this effect. It is possible to generalize mixing length theory [7–9] in a way which eliminates these defects. Flow of an incompressible fluid is considered.

Equations are obtained for two-dimensional transonic adiabatic (nonisoenergetic and nonisoentropic) vortex flows of an ideal gas, using the natural coordinates (=const is the family of streamlines, and =const is the family of lines orthogonal to them). It is not required that the transonic gas flow be close to a uniform sonic flow (the derivation is given without estimates). Solutions are found for equations describing vortex flows inside a Laval nozzle and near the sonic boundary of a free stream.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 105–109, September–October, 1973.

Systematic data on the determination of the aerodynamic characteristics of axisymmetric bodies with a break in the generating line (Fig. 1a, b) in supersonic flow at zero angle of attack are presented in [1, 2, and others]. A characteristic feature of the flow past such bodies is the appearance of an extensive separation zone dec in the region of the break in the generator when the break angle exceeds some minimum value min, which for a turbulent boundary layer depends basically on the Mach number M at the body surface ahead of the separation zone. In this case, compression waves which change into the oblique compression shocks dc and cc, emanate both from the beginning of the separation zone (point c) and from the end of it (point d). These shocks, intersecting at the point c, form the triple shock configuration acd and acc for which we introduce the notationac[c, d]. The maximum value (max) of the generator break angle is limited by the possibility of the existence of an attached compression shock, dc. According to these data a change in the generator break angle for the range minmax of the angle does not disrupt the nature of the flow in the separation zone, but only alters the size of this zone.We shall examine the flow past cones with values of the generator break angles (max) for which the attached shock dc cannot exist.

Nonstationary currents are examined in a dense magnetized plasma with 1, in which energy release and heat loss by thermal conduction and radiation are possible. Solutions are found in two limiting cases: ¦f¦ ¦ div (T)¦ and ¦f¦ ¦ div(T)¦ (f is the radiation intensity, is the coefficient of heat conduction, and T is the temperature). In the first case a solution was obtained of some problems of the cooling and heating of a plasma illustrated in part by the evolution in time of the temperature profile in the boundary layer. In the second case an isomorphic solution was found for an arbitrary dependence of the coefficient of heat conduction on the temperature, pressure, and magnetic field.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 1, pp. 3–8, January–February, 1972.The author is grateful to G. The natural convection of fresh water in a square cell is considered at a temperature close to the density inversion temperature for Grashof numbers 2.9 · 104 Gr 106. As a result of the numerical investigation, one steady-state and three self-oscillating regimes are found in addition to the three steady-state flows previously detected earlier and described for low Grashof numbers ( 0 Gr 2 · 105). The basic characteristics of the unsteady flows are analyzed by means of the Fourier method, the fundamental oscillation frequencies are found, and the flow evolution and the variation of the oscillation characteristics with increase in the Gr number are considered.

Supersonic flow past a sphere with a given rate of gas injection along the generator is investigated numerically on the range Re=102–104. Calculations have been made on the interval 0 90°, where is the angle between the axis of symmetry and the normal to the surface. It is shown that for high subsonic and sonic injection rates it is possible to observe qualitatively new features in the flow structure and in the distribution of the local supersonic flow characteristics around the perimeter of the sphere not previously noted in [9]. In the case of sonic injection the changes in flow structure occur only in the supersonic zone. In the neighborhood of the transition from a subsonic to sonic injection velocity the heat flux has a local maximum, which in absolute value does not exceed the heat flux in the absence of injection. It is shown that there may be qualitative differences in the pressure distribution over the surface of the body with increase in the injection parameter depending on the distribution and value of the injected gas flow rate and, moreover, the number Re.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 83–89, January–February, 1988.

Stokes flow in a deformable medium is considered in terms of an isotropic, linearly elastic solid matrix. The analysis is restricted to steady forms of the momentum equations and small deformation of the solid phase. Darcy's law can be used to determine the motion of the fluid phase; however, the determination of the Darcy's law permeability tensor represents part of the closure problem in which the position of the fluid-solid interface must be determined.Roman Letters A interfacial area of the- interface contained within the macroscopic system, m2 - A interfacial area of the- interface contained within the averaging volume, m2 - A e area of entrances and exits for the-phase contained within the macroscopic system, m2 - A * interfacial area of the- interface contained within a unit cell, m2 - A e * area of entrances and exits for the-phase contained within a unit cell, m2 - E Young's modulus for the-phase, N/m2 - e i unit base vectors (i = 1, 2, 3) - g gravity vector, m2/s - H height of elastic, porous bed, m - k unit base vector (=e 3) - characteristic length scale for the-phase, m - L characteristic length scale for volume-averaged quantities, m - n unit normal vector pointing from the-phase toward the-phase (n = -n ) - p pressure in the-phase, N/m2 - P p g·r, N/m2 - r 0 radius of the averaging volume, m - r position vector, m - t time, s - T total stress tensor in the-phase, N/m2 - T 0 hydrostatic stress tensor for the-phase, N/m2 - u displacement vector for the-phase, m - V averaging volume, m3 - V volume of the-phase contained within the averaging volume, m3 - v velocity vector for the-phase, m/s Greek Letters V /V, volume fraction of the-phase - mass density of the-phase, kg/m3 - shear coefficient of viscosity for the-phase, Nt/m2 - first Lamé coefficient for the-phase, N/m2 - second Lamé coefficient for the-phase, N/m2 - bulk coefficient of viscosity for the-phase, Nt/m2 - T T 0 , a deviatoric stress tensor for the-phase, N/m2  相似文献

The structure of the electromagnetic electrode layers that are produced in flows across a magnetic field by a completely ionized and inviscid plasma with good conductivity and a high magnetic Reynolds number is examined in a linear approximation. Flow past a corrugated wall and flow in a plane channel of slowly varying cross section with segmented electrodes are taken as specific examples. The possibility is demonstrated of the formation of nondissipative electrode layers with thicknesses on the order of the Debye distance or electron Larmor radius and of dissipative layers with thicknesses on the order of the skin thickness, as calculated from the diffusion rate in a magnetic field [2].In plasma flow in a transverse magnetic field, near the walls, along with the gasdynamie boundary layers, which owe their formation to viscosity, thermal conductivity, etc. (because of the presence of electromagnetic fields, their structures may vary considerably from that of ordinary gasdynamic layers), proper electromagnetic boundary layers may also be produced. An example of such layers is the Debye layer in which the quasi-neutrality of the plasma is upset. No less important, in a number of cases, is the quasi-neutral electromagnetic boundary layer, in which there is an abrupt change in the frozen-in parameter k=B/p (B is the magnetic field and p is the density of the medium). This layer plays a special role when we must explicitly allow for the Hall effect and the related formation of a longitudinal electric field (in the direction of the veloeiryv of the medium). We will call this the magnetic layer. The magnetic boundary layer can be dissipative as well as noudissipative (see below). The dissipative magnetic layer has been examined in a number of papers: for an incompressible medium with a given motion law in [1], for a compressible medium with good conductivity in [2], and with poor conductivity in [3]. In the present paper, particular attention will be devoted to nondissipative magnetic boundary layers.
