Transferred Chern classes in Morava -theory

Let be a complex -plane bundle over the total space of a cyclic covering of prime index . We show that for the -th Chern class of the transferred bundle differs from a certain transferred class of by a polynomial in the Chern classes of the transferred bundle. The polynomials are defined by the formal group law and certain equalities in .

     

Distinguished representations and poles of twisted tensor -functions

Let be a quadratic extension of -adic fields. If is an admissible representation of that is parabolically induced from discrete series representations, then we prove that the space of -invariant linear functionals on has dimension one, where is the mirabolic subgroup. As a corollary, it is deduced that if is distinguished by , then the twisted tensor -function associated to has a pole at . It follows that if is a discrete series representation, then at most one of the representations and is distinguished, where is an extension of the local class field theory character associated to . This is in agreement with a conjecture of Flicker and Rallis that relates the set of distinguished representations with the image of base change from a suitable unitary group.

     

On -supplemented maximal and minimal subgroups of Sylow subgroups of finite groups

This paper proves: Let be a saturated formation containing . Suppose that is a group with a normal subgroup such that .

(1) If all maximal subgroups of any Sylow subgroup of are -supple- mented in , then ;

(2) If all minimal subgroups and all cyclic subgroups with order 4 of are -supplemented in , then .

     

A concrete description of -spaces as -spaces and its applications

We prove that for a compact Hausdorff space without isolated points, and are isometrically Riesz isomorphic spaces under a certain topology on . Moreover, is a closed subspace of . This provides concrete examples of compact Hausdorff spaces such that the Dedekind completion of is (= the set of all bounded real-valued functions on ) since the Dedekind completion of is ( and spaces as Banach lattices).

     

Weak properties of weighted convolution algebras

Suppose that is a weighted convolution algebra on with the weight normalized so that the corresponding space of measures is the dual space of the space of continuous functions. Suppose that is a continuous nonzero homomorphism, where is also a convolution algebra. If is norm dense in , we show that is (relatively) weak dense in , and we identify the norm closure of with the convergence set for a particular semigroup. When is weak continuous it is enough for to be weak dense in . We also give sufficient conditions and characterizations of weak continuity of . In addition, we show that, for all nonzero in , the sequence converges weak to 0. When is regulated, converges to 0 in norm.

     

Uncountable intersections of open sets under CPA

We prove that the Covering Property Axiom CPA , which holds in the iterated perfect set model, implies the following facts.

• If is an intersection of -many open sets of a Polish space and has cardinality continuum, then contains a perfect set.

• There exists a subset of the Cantor set which is an intersection of -many open sets but is not a union of -many closed sets.

The example from the second fact refutes a conjecture of Brendle, Larson, and Todorcevic.

     

Vector measure Banach spaces containing a complemented copy of

Let a Banach space and a -algebra of subsets of a set . We say that a vector measure Banach space has the bounded Vitaly-Hahn-Sacks Property if it satisfies the following condition: Every vector measure , for which there exists a bounded sequence in verifying for all , must belong to . Among other results, we prove that, if is a vector measure Banach space with the bounded V-H-S Property and containing a complemented copy of , then contains a copy of .

     

Polynomial approximation on real-analytic varieties in

We prove: Let be a compact real-analytic variety in . Assume (i) is polynomially convex and (ii) every point of is a peak point for . Then . This generalizes a previous result of the authors on polynomial approximation on three-dimensional real-analytic submanifolds of .

     

Stability of -algebras associated to graphs

We characterize stability of graph -algebras by giving five conditions equivalent to their stability. We also show that if is a graph with no sources, then is stable if and only if each vertex in can be reached by an infinite number of vertices. We use this characterization to realize the stabilization of a graph -algebra. Specifically, if is a graph and is the graph formed by adding a head to each vertex of , then is the stabilization of ; that is, .

     

Simple corona -algebras

Let be a non-unital and -unital simple -algebra. We show that if is simple, then is purely infinite. We also show that is simple if and only if has a continuous scale provided that is not isomorphic to the compact operators.

     

-adic -basis and regular local ring

We introduce the concept of -adic -basis as an extension of the concept of -basis. Let be a regular local ring of prime characteristic and a ring such that . Then we prove that is a regular local ring if and only if there exists an -adic -basis of and is Noetherian.

     

The number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable group

We observe a simple formula to compute the number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable finite group in terms of only the action of a fixed Hall -subgroup of on a set of normal -sections of . As a consequence, we obtain that divides whenever is a subgroup of a finite -separable group . This generalizes a recent result of Navarro. In addition, our method gives an alternative proof of Navarro's result.

     

Symmetric word equations in two positive definite letters

For every symmetric (``palindromic") word in two positive definite letters and for each fixed -by- positive definite and , it is shown that the symmetric word equation has an -by- positive definite solution . Moreover, if and are real, there is a real solution . The notion of symmetric word is generalized to allow non-integer exponents, with certain limitations. In some cases, the solution is unique, but, in general, uniqueness is an open question. Applications and methods for finding solutions are also discussed.

     

Robust transitivity and topological mixing for -flows

We prove that nontrivial homoclinic classes of -generic flows are topologically mixing. This implies that given , a nontrivial -robustly transitive set of a vector field , there is a -perturbation of such that the continuation of is a topologically mixing set for . In particular, robustly transitive flows become topologically mixing after -perturbations. These results generalize a theorem by Bowen on the basic sets of generic Axiom A flows. We also show that the set of flows whose nontrivial homoclinic classes are topologically mixing is not open and dense, in general.

     

Tight wavelet frames generated by three symmetric -spline functions with high vanishing moments

In this note, we show that one can derive from any -spline function of order ( ) an MRA tight wavelet frame in that is generated by the dyadic dilates and integer shifts of three compactly supported real-valued symmetric wavelet functions with vanishing moments of the highest possible order .

     

Control of radii of convergence and extension of subanalytic functions

Let : denote a real analytic function on an open subset of , and let denote the points where does not admit a local analytic extension. We show that if is semialgebraic (respectively, globally subanalytic), then is semialgebraic (respectively, subanalytic) and extends to a semialgebraic (respectively, subanalytic) neighbourhood of . (In the general subanalytic case, is not necessarily subanalytic.) Our proof depends on controlling the radii of convergence of power series centred at points in the image of an analytic mapping , in terms of the radii of convergence of at points , where denotes the Taylor expansion of at .

     

Minimal polynomials of elements of order in -modular projective representations of alternating groups

Let be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0$"> and let be a quasi-simple group with . We describe the minimal polynomials of elements of order in irreducible representations of over . If , we determine the minimal polynomials of elements of order in -modular irreducible representations of , , , , , and .

     

-extensions in characteristic 3

We present an explicit construction of the complete family of Galois extensions of a field of characteristic 3 with Galois group the central product of a double cover of the symmetric group and the quaternion group , containing a given -extension of the field .

     

Devaney's chaos implies existence of -scrambled sets

Let be a complete metric space without isolated points, and let be a continuous map. In this paper we prove that if is transitive and has a periodic point of period , then has a scrambled set consisting of transitive points such that each is a synchronously proximal Cantor set, and is dense in . Furthermore, if is sensitive (for example, if is chaotic in the sense of Devaney), with being a sensitivity constant, then this is an -scrambled set.

     

Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for arbitrary closed subgroups

Let be a nondegenerate coaction of on a -algebra , and let be a closed subgroup of . The dual action is proper and saturated in the sense of Rieffel, and the generalised fixed-point algebra is the crossed product of by the homogeneous space . The resulting Morita equivalence is a version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem which requires neither amenability nor normality of .
