The electromagnetic scattering at a perfectly conducting object is usually initiated by an incoming electromagnetic field. It is well known that the classical boundary element implementations solving for the scattered electric field are not uniformly stable with respect to the frequency of the incoming signal. The subject of this article is to develop a stabilized boundary element formulation that does not suffer from the so‐called low‐frequency breakdown. This paper is dedicated to the study of a family of nonlinear Volterra equations coming from the theory of viscoelasticity. The main object under consideration in the paper is the second derivative operator on a finite interval with zero boundary conditions perturbed by a self‐adjoint integral operator with the degenerate kernel (non‐local potential). In this paper we look at a probabilistic approach to a non‐local quadratic form that has lately attracted some interest. This form is related to a recently introduced non‐local normal derivative. The goal is to construct two Markov processes: one corresponding to that form and the other which is related to a probabilistic interpretation of the Neumann problem. This work presents a collection of global and iterative finite element procedures for the numerical approximation of coupled seismic and electromagnetic waves in 2D bounded fluid‐saturated porous media, with absorbing boundary conditions at the artificial boundaries. The equations being analyzed are the coupled Biot's equations of motion and Maxwell equations in the diffusive range. Both seismoelectric and electroseismic coupling are simultaneously included and analyzed in the model. The case of compressional and vertically polarized shear waves coupled with the transverse magnetic polarization (PSVTM‐mode) is analyzed in detail, including the derivation of a priori error estimates on the global finite element procedure and results on the convergence of a domain decomposition iterative algorithm. Later, the corresponding results for the case of horizontally polarized shear waves coupled with the transverse electric polarization (SHTE‐mode) are stated. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The control problem for a three‐dimensional non‐linear thermoelasticity system is considered. The system may represent, among others, the dynamical model of shape memory materials. As controls we take distributed heat sources and body forces. The goal functional refers to the desired evolution of displacement, strain and temperature. The continuity and differentiability of solutions with respect to controls is studied. The existence of optimal controls is proved and the necessary optimality conditions are formulated. The quenching problem is examined for a one‐dimensional heat equation with a non‐linear boundary condition that is of either local or non‐local type. Sufficient conditions are derived that establish both quenching and non‐quenching behaviour. The growth rate of the solution near quenching is also given for a power‐law non‐linearity. Electromagnetic wave propagation in more complex linear materials such as bi‐anisotropic media have come to a considerable attention within the last 15–20 years. We shall propose a general framework to approach a class of highly complex materials. Such problems have been extensively studied mostly in the time‐harmonic case. In this paper, we focus on the time‐dependent case. A well‐posedness result for a large class of media is obtained. In the present paper the unique solvability of two non‐local problems for the mixed parabolic‐hyperbolic type equation with complex spectral parameter is proved. Sectors for values of the spectral parameter where these problems have unique solutions are shown. Uniqueness of the solution is proved by the method of energy integral and existence is proved by the method of integral equations. In this article, the local well‐posedness of Cauchy's problem is explored for a system of quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the space Lp( R n). In a special case of mass resonant 2 × 2 system, it is well known that this problem is well posed in Hs(s≥0) and ill posed in Hs(s < 0) in two‐space dimensions. By translation on a linear semigroup, we show that the general system becomes locally well posed in Lp( R 2) for 1 < p < 2, for which p can arbitrarily be close to the scaling limit pc=1. In one‐dimensional case, we show that the problem is locally well posed in L1( R ); moreover, it has a measure valued solution if the initial data are a Dirac function. In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the Keller–Segel system with fractional diffusion generalizing the Keller–Segel model of chemotaxis for the initial data (u0,v0) in critical Fourier‐Herz spaces with q ∈ [2, ], where 1 < α ≤ 2. Making use of some estimates of the linear dissipative equation in the frame of mixed time‐space spaces, the Chemin ‘mono‐norm method’, the Fourier localization technique and the Littlewood–Paley theory, we get a local well‐posedness result and a global well‐posedness result with a small initial data. There is an increasing reliance on mathematical modelling to assist in the design of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers since this provides a cost‐effective and quick way to arrive at a first prototype. Given a desired operating envelope for the sensor, the inverse problem of obtaining the associated design parameters within the model can be considered. It is therefore of practical interest to examine the well‐posedness of such models. There is a need to extend the use of such sensors into high‐temperature environments, and so this paper shows, for a broad class of models, the well‐posedness of the magneto‐electro‐thermo‐elastic problem. In this paper, we develop several two‐grid methods for the Nédélec edge finite element approximation of the time‐harmonic Maxwell equations. We first present a two‐grid method that uses a coarse space to solve the original problem and then use a fine space to solve a corresponding symmetric positive definite problem. Then, we present two types of iterative two‐grid methods, one is to add the kernel of the curl ‐operator in the fine space to a coarse mesh space to solve the original problem and the other is to use an inner iterative method for dealing with the kernel of the curl ‐operator in the fine space and the coarse space, separately. In view of shape optimization or inverse reconstruction problems, the domain derivative of the scattering problem is investigated. This work is concerned with the periodic problem for compressible non‐isentropic Euler–Maxwell systems with a temperature damping term arising in plasmas. For this problem, we prove the global in time existence of a smooth solution around a given non‐constant steady state with the help of an induction argument on the order of the mixed time‐space derivatives of solutions in energy estimates. Moreover, we also show the convergence of the solution to this steady state as the time goes to the infinity. This phenomenon on the charge transport shows the essential relation of the systems with the non‐isentropic Euler–Maxwell and the isentropic Euler–Maxwell systems. This paper deals with radial solutions to localized reaction‐diffusion equations with variable exponents, subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The global existence versus blow‐up criteria are studied in terms of the variable exponents. We proposed that the maximums of variable exponents are the key clue to determine blow‐up classifications and describe blow‐up rates for positive solutions.
