We prove that Moore digraphs, and some other classes of extremal digraphs, are weakly distance-regular in the sense that there is an invariance of the number of walks between vertices at a given distance. As weakly distance-regular digraphs, we then compute their complete spectrum from a ‘small’ intersection matrix. This is a very useful tool for deriving some results about their existence and/or their structural properties. For instance, we present here an alternative and unified proof of the existence results on Moore digraphs, Moore bipartite digraphs and, more generally, Moore generalized p-cycles. In addition, we show that the line digraph structure appears as a characteristic property of any Moore generalized p-cycle of diameter D?≥?2p.  相似文献

An almost Moore digraph G of degree d>1, diameter k>1 is a diregular digraph with the number of vertices one less than the Moore bound. If G is an almost Moore digraph, then for each vertex uV(G) there exists a vertex vV(G), called repeat of u and denoted by r(u)=v, such that there are two walks of length ?k from u to v. The smallest positive integer p such that the composition rp(u)=u is called the order of u. If the order of u is 1 then u is called a selfrepeat. It is known that if G is an almost Moore digraph of diameter k?3 then G contains exactly k selfrepeats or none. In this paper, we propose an exact formula for the number of all vertex orders in an almost Moore digraph G containing selfrepeats, based on the vertex orders of the out-neighbours of any selfrepeat vertex.  相似文献

For a digraph G, a k-tuple twin dominating set D of G for some fixed k≥1 is a set of vertices such that every vertex is adjacent to at least k vertices in D, and also every vertex is adjacent from at least k vertices in D. If the subgraph of G induced by D is strongly connected, then D is called a connected k-tuple twin dominating set of G. In this paper, we give constructions of minimal connected k-tuple twin dominating sets for de Bruijn digraphs and Kautz digraphs.  相似文献

We derive some Moore-like bounds for multipartite digraphs, which extend those of bipartite digraphs, under the assumption that every vertex of a given partite set is adjacent to the same number δ of vertices in each of the other independent sets. We determine when a multipartite Moore digraph is weakly distance-regular. Within this framework, some necessary conditions for the existence of a r-partite Moore digraph with interpartite outdegree δ > 1 and diameter k = 2m are obtained. In the case δ = 1, which corresponds to almost Moore digraphs, a necessary condition in terms of the permutation cycle structure is derived. Additionally, we present some constructions of dense multipartite digraphs of diameter two that are vertex-transitive.  相似文献

A digraph G = (V, E) is primitive if, for some positive integer k, there is a uv walk of length k for every pair u, v of vertices of V. The minimum such k is called the exponent of G, denoted exp(G). The exponent of a vertex uV, denoted exp(u), is the least integer k such that there is a uv walk of length k for each vV. For a set XV, exp(X) is the least integer k such that for each vV there is a Xv walk of length k, i.e., a uv walk of length k for some uX. Let F(G, k) : = max{exp(X) : |X| = k} and F(n, k) : = max{F(G, k) : |V| = n}, where |X| and |V| denote the number of vertices in X and V, respectively. Recently, B. Liu and Q. Li proved F(n, k) = (nk)(n − 1) + 1 for all 1 ≤ kn − 1. In this article, for each k, 1 ≤ kn − 1, we characterize the digraphs G such that F(G, k) = F(n, k), thereby answering a question of R. Brualdi and B. Liu. We also find some new upper bounds on the (ordinary) exponent of G in terms of the maximum outdegree of G, Δ+(G) = max{d+(u) : uV}, and thus obtain a new refinement of the Wielandt bound (n − 1)2 + 1. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We introduce the circular chromatic number χc of a digraph and establish various basic results. They show that the coloring theory for digraphs is similar to the coloring theory for undirected graphs when independent sets of vertices are replaced by acyclic sets. Since the directed k‐cycle has circular chromatic number k/(k – 1), for k ≥ 2, values of χc between 1 and 2 are possible. We show that in fact, χc takes on all rational values greater than 1. Furthermore, there exist digraphs of arbitrarily large digirth and circular chromatic number. It is NP‐complete to decide if a given digraph has χc at most 2. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A quasi‐kernel in a digraph is an independent set of vertices such that any vertex in the digraph can reach some vertex in the set via a directed path of length at most two. Chvátal and Lovász proved that every digraph has a quasi‐kernel. Recently, Gutin et al. raised the question of which digraphs have a pair of disjoint quasi‐kernels. Clearly, a digraph has a pair of disjoint quasi‐kernels cannot contain sinks, that is, vertices of outdegree zero, as each such vertex is necessarily included in a quasi‐kernel. However, there exist digraphs which contain neither sinks nor a pair of disjoint quasi‐kernels. Thus, containing no sinks is not sufficient in general for a digraph to have a pair of disjoint quasi‐kernels. In contrast, we prove that, for several classes of digraphs, the condition of containing no sinks guarantees the existence of a pair of disjoint quasi‐kernels. The classes contain semicomplete multipartite, quasi‐transitive, and locally semicomplete digraphs. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 58:251‐260, 2008  相似文献

In this paper we determine the positive integers n and k for which there exists a homogeneous factorisation of a complete digraph on n vertices with k ‘common circulant’ factors. This means a partition of the arc set of the complete digraph Kn into k circulant factor digraphs, such that a cyclic group of order n acts regularly on the vertices of each factor digraph whilst preserving the edges, and in addition, an overgroup of this permutes the factor digraphs transitively amongst themselves. This determination generalises a previous result for self-complementary circulants.  相似文献

A two-colored digraph D is primitive if there exist nonnegative integers h and k with h+k>0 such that for each pair (i, j) of vertices there exists an (h, k)-walk in D from i to j. The exponent of the primitive two-colored digraph D is the minimum value of h+k taken over all such h and k. In this article, we consider special primitive two-colored digraphs whose uncolored digraph has n+s vertices and consist of one n-cycle and one (n???2)-cycle. We give the bounds on the exponents, and the characterizations of the extremal two-colored digraphs.  相似文献

This paper deals with Hamiltonicity of connected loopless circulant digraphs of outdegree three with connection set of the form {a,ka,c}, where k is an integer. In particular, we prove that if k=−1 or k=2 such a circulant digraph is Hamiltonian if and only if it is not isomorphic to the circulant digraph on 12 vertices with connection set {3,6,4}.  相似文献

The central observation of this paper is that if εn random arcs are added to any n‐node strongly connected digraph with bounded degree then the resulting graph has diameter 𝒪(lnn) with high probability. We apply this to smoothed analysis of algorithms and property testing. Smoothed Analysis: Recognizing strongly connected digraphs is a basic computational task in graph theory. Even for digraphs with bounded degree, it is NL‐complete. By XORing an arbitrary bounded degree digraph with a sparse random digraph R ∼ 𝔻n,ε/n we obtain a “smoothed” instance. We show that, with high probability, a log‐space algorithm will correctly determine if a smoothed instance is strongly connected. We also show that if NL ⫅̸ almost‐L then no heuristic can recognize similarly perturbed instances of (s,t)‐connectivity. Property Testing: A digraph is called k‐linked if, for every choice of 2k distinct vertices s1,…,sk,t1,…,tk, the graph contains k vertex disjoint paths joining sr to tr for r = 1,…,k. Recognizing k‐linked digraphs is NP‐complete for k ≥ 2. We describe a polynomial time algorithm for bounded degree digraphs, which accepts k‐linked graphs with high probability, and rejects all graphs that are at least εn arcs away from being k‐linked. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider bipartite graphs of degree Δ≥2, diameter D=3, and defect 2 (having 2 vertices less than the bipartite Moore bound). Such graphs are called bipartite (Δ, 3, ?2) ‐graphs. We prove the uniqueness of the known bipartite (3, 3, ?2) ‐graph and bipartite (4, 3, ?2)‐graph. We also prove several necessary conditions for the existence of bipartite (Δ, 3, ?2) ‐graphs. The most general of these conditions is that either Δ or Δ?2 must be a perfect square. Furthermore, in some cases for which the condition holds, in particular, when Δ=6 and Δ=9, we prove the non‐existence of the corresponding bipartite (Δ, 3, ?2)‐graphs, thus establishing that there are no bipartite (Δ, 3, ?2)‐graphs, for 5≤Δ≤10. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We call a Cayley digraph Γ = Cay(G, S) normal for G if G R , the right regular representation of G, is a normal subgroup of the full automorphism group Aut(Γ) of Γ. In this paper we determine the normality of Cayley digraphs of valency 2 on nonabelian groups of order 2p 2 (p odd prime). As a result, a family of nonnormal Cayley digraphs is found. Let G = (V, A) be a digraph with diameter D ≠ 1. For a given integer 2 ≤ tD, the t-distance connectivity κ(t) of G is the minimum cardinality of an xy separating set over all the pairs of vertices x, y which are at distance d(x, y) ≥ t. The t-distance edge connectivity λ(t) of G is defined similarly. The t-degree of G, δ(t), is the minimum among the out-degrees and in-degrees of all vertices with (out- or -in-) eccentricity at least t. A digraph is said to be maximally distance connected if κ(t) = δ(t) for all values of t. In this paper we give a construction of a digraph having D − 1 positive arbitrary integers c2 ≤ … ≤ cD, D > 3, as the values of its t-distance connectivities κ(2) = c2, …, κ(D) = cD. Besides, a digraph that shows the independence of the parameters κ(t), λ(t), and δ(t) is constructed. Also we derive some results on the distance connectivities of digraphs, as well as sufficient conditions for a digraph to be maximally distance connected. Similar results for (undirected) graphs are presented. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Exponents of 2-coloring of symmetric digraphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A 2-coloring (G1,G2) of a digraph is 2-primitive if there exist nonnegative integers h and k with h+k>0 such that for each ordered pair (u,v) of vertices there exists an (h,k)-walk in (G1,G2) from u to v. The exponent of (G1,G2) is the minimum value of h+k taken over all such h and k. In this paper, we consider 2-colorings of strongly connected symmetric digraphs with loops, establish necessary and sufficient conditions for these to be 2-primitive and determine an upper bound on their exponents. We also characterize the 2-colored digraphs that attain the upper bound and the exponent set for this family of digraphs on n vertices.  相似文献

Motivated by an old conjecture of P. Erdős and V. Neumann‐Lara, our aim is to investigate digraphs with uncountable dichromatic number and orientations of undirected graphs with uncountable chromatic number. A graph has uncountable chromatic number if its vertices cannot be covered by countably many independent sets, and a digraph has uncountable dichromatic number if its vertices cannot be covered by countably many acyclic sets. We prove that, consistently, there are digraphs with uncountable dichromatic number and arbitrarily large digirth; this is in surprising contrast with the undirected case: any graph with uncountable chromatic number contains a 4‐cycle. Next, we prove that several well‐known graphs (uncountable complete graphs, certain comparability graphs, and shift graphs) admit orientations with uncountable dichromatic number in ZFC. However, we show that the statement “every graph G of size and chromatic number ω1 has an orientation D with uncountable dichromatic number” is independent of ZFC. We end the article with several open problems.  相似文献

Abstract

For a group G and a subset S of G which does not contain the identity of G, the Cayley digraph Cay(G, S) is called normal if R(G) is normal in Aut(Γ). In this paper, we investigate the normality of Cayley digraphs of finite simple groups with out-valency 2 and 3. We give several sufficient conditions for such Cayley digraphs to be normal. By using this result, we consider the digraphical regular representations of finite simple groups.  相似文献

This paper studies the relation between the connectivity and other parameters of a digraph (or graph), namely its order n, minimum degree δ, maximum degree Δ, diameter D, and a new parameter lpi;, 0 ≤ π ≤ δ ? 2, related with the number of short paths (in the case of graphs l0 = ?(g ? 1)/2? where g stands for the girth). For instance, let G = (V,A) be a digraph on n vertices with maximum degree Δ and diameter D, so that nn(Δ, D) = 1 + Δ + Δ 2 + … + ΔD (Moore bound). As the main results it is shown that, if κ and λ denote respectively the connectivity and arc-connectivity of G, . Analogous results hold for graphs. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The strong chromatic index of a graph G, denoted sq(G), is the minimum number of parts needed to partition the edges of G into induced matchings. For 0 ≤ klm, the subset graph Sm(k, l) is a bipartite graph whose vertices are the k- and l-subsets of an m element ground set where two vertices are adjacent if and only if one subset is contained in the other. We show that and that this number satisfies the strong chromatic index conjecture by Brualdi and Quinn for bipartite graphs. Further, we demonstrate that the conjecture is also valid for a more general family of bipartite graphs. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
