A two‐armed polymer with a crown ether core self‐assembles to produce macroporous films with pores perpendicularly reaching through the film down to the substrate. A possible assembling mechanism is discussed. The pore size can be conveniently adjusted by changing the solution concentration. These through‐hole macroporous films provide a template for fabricating an array of Cu nanoparticle aggregates.

The main techniques developed to characterize chitosan are recalled. The interaction of chitosan with oppositely charged surfactants was investigated giving very important surface activity effects. A few chemical modifications are described and the new properties obtained are mentioned: alkylation gives amphiphilic polymers having interesting thickening behavior; grafting cyclodextrin (chit‐CD) gives a polymer able to include hydrophobic molecules; grafting adamantane gives an amphiphilic polymer able to specifically interact with chit‐CD forming a temporary network with gel‐like behavior.

Amino‐alkoxy‐bis(phenolate) yttrium complexes act in the presence of an excess of alcohol (up to 50 equiv. vs. Y) as highly active and stereoselective catalysts for rac‐lactide and racβ‐butyrolactone polymerizations. These versatile systems enable the production of large quantities of polymer with small amounts of catalyst, optimizing productivity, and also allow the preparation of polymers with functional end groups, which may be employed as intermediates for macromolecular engineering applications.

Summary: Water‐soluble biomimetic chitosan derivative conjugating zwitterionic phosphorylcholine was efficiently prepared through Atherton‐Todd reaction under the mild conditions, and the possible formation mechanism of zwitterionic product was related to the nucleophilic attack of adjacent 3‐hydroxyl on the D ‐glucosamine residue to phosphorus with the help of base. UV absorption and melting behaviors of DNA/phosphorylcholine‐bound chitosan derivative showed that the phosphorylcholine‐bound chitosan derivative could be a new carrier for long‐circulating macromolecular drug delivery.

Anionic conjugated polymer (PFP‐SO) was assembled with a novel enzymatic substrate 6‐O‐modified PNP‐β‐galactoside ( 1 ) for sensitive multiplex enzyme detections. The PFP‐SO/ 1 /lipase/β‐galactosidase system has two chemical input signals which are Input 1 (lipase) and Input 2 (β‐galactosidase), and output optical signals such as fluorescence emission at 416 nm or 450 nm. Four types of logic gates, including YES, INH, NAND and AND, were successfully constructed and utilized for multiplex detections of lipase and β‐galactosidase in one tube.

The importance of taking into account the principle of microscopic reversibility in the analysis of complex copolymerization systems is demonstrated. The analysis of a reversible copolymerization system in which segmental exchange is possible from the point of view of the reaction microreversibility proves that hetero‐reshuffling rate constants depend on homo‐reshuffling rate constants and copolymerization thermodynamics.

The Michael reaction of chitosan with acrylic acid was carried out successfully, even in water alone as the reaction medium. As a consequence of its good solubility in water, the reaction product, N‐carboxyethylchitosan, showed excellent biodegradable properties with standard activated sludge.

Blue‐light‐emitting 2,7‐carbazole‐based conjugated copolymers have been prepared by Yamamoto or Suzuki cross‐coupling reactions. By introducing highly substituted aromatic comonomers, fully soluble high‐molecular‐weight copolymers have been obtained. Moreover, these amorphous polymeric materials exhibit good thermal stability and interesting redox properties. All these features make these new conjugated polymers highly promising for the development of single‐polymer‐layer blue‐light‐emitting diodes.

The mode of packing and the adjacent re‐entry folds of chains of syndiotactic 1,2‐poly(1,3‐butadiene) have been studied by molecular mechanics calculations with the use of various sets of potential functions. The results of the packing analysis indicate that the crystal grows preferentially along the [100] and [110] directions. Models of fold have been built up on an infinite ab surface completely covered by adjacent re‐entry folds in the (100) and (110) planes. The results of energy minimizations show that several almost isoenergetic folds, constituted by four monomeric units, can be realized in the (100) planes, while the fold in the (110) planes has higher energy. The calculated value of the work of fold is in satisfactory agreement with that derived by crystallization kinetics reported in literature.

We report the simple one‐pot synthesis of size tunable zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) out of an organometallic ZnO precursor using the self‐assembly of solution phase polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) micelles. The resulting hybrid material could be deposited on various substrates in a straightforward manner with the NPs showing size‐dependent absorption and photoluminescence due to the quantum‐size effect. We compare the results to the assembly of preformed NPs which are selectively incorporated in the poly(2‐vinylpyridine) core of the micelles due to the high affinity of ZnO to vinylpyridine.

The influence of Hofmeister salts was investigated on the cloud point of three poly(2‐oxazoline)s, namely poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) [PEtOx], poly(2‐n‐propyl‐2‐oxazoline) [PnPropOx], and poly(2‐isopropyl‐2‐oxazoline) [PiPropOx]. In addition, a comb polymer based on oligo‐2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline side chains and a methacrylate backbone (POEtOxMA) was included in this investigation. It was found that the ionic response of the poly(2‐oxazoline)s strongly depends on their hydrophilicity. The comb polymer POEtOxMA revealed a strikingly similar response to the salts as linear PEtOx even though the cloud points of the polymers in water differ. This indicates that the architecture does not significantly influence the effect of the Hofmeister ions, even though there is a difference in the absolute cloud point.

Perfectly alternating copolymers can be synthesised by reacting diacrylates with terminal dienes using alternating diene metathesis polycondensation (ALTMET). This novel method is very versatile and allows preparation of diverse structures of polymers, including main‐chain liquid crystalline polymers.

The interpolyelectrolyte complexes of poly(acrylic acid)‐chitosan were investigated as inductor of systemic resistance potentially useful in the organic production of vegetables. These complexes, which are water soluble, were tested in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. var. Floradade). The seed treatments were carried out using solutions consisting of 0.1 vol.‐% of the complex and 5 g · L?1 NaCl in water. The data showed that this treatment produced a higher resistance to the attack by Fusarium oxysporum and Phytophthora capsici pathogens in tomato seedlings.

Poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) supramolecular structures are fabricated on P3HT‐dispersed reduced graphene oxide (RGO) monolayers and surfactant‐free RGO monolayers. P3HT is able to disperse RGO in hot anisole/N,N‐dimethylformamide solvents, and forms nanowires on RGO surfaces through a RGO induced crystallization process. The TEM and AFM investigation of the resultant P3HT/RGO composites shows that P3HT nanowires grow from RGO, and connect individual RGO monolayers. Raman spectroscopy confirms the interaction between P3HT and RGO, which allows the manipulation of the RGO electrical properties. Such a bottom‐up approach provides interesting graphene‐based composites for nanometer‐scale electronics.

Supramolecular self‐assembly of block copolymers in aqueous solution has received ever‐increasing interest over the past few decades due to diverse biological and technological applications in drug delivery, imaging, sensing and catalysis. In addition to relative block lengths, molecular weights and solution conditions, chain architectures of block copolymers can also dramatically affect their self‐assembling properties in selective solvents. This feature article mainly focuses on recent developments in the field of supramolecular self‐assembly of amphiphilic and double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) possessing nonlinear chain topologies, including miktoarm star polymers, dendritic–linear block copolymers, cyclic block copolymers and comb‐shaped copolymer brushes.

The quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation technique (QCM‐D) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been employed to study the interaction of N‐tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TdTmAB) with polyelectrolyte multilayers containing poly(sodium 4‐styrene sulfonate) (PSS) as the polyanion and either poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) or poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) as the polycations. The multilayers were exposed to aqueous solutions of TdTmAB. This resulted in a selective removal of PDADMAC PSS layers while layers with PAH as polycation remained stable. It is suggested that PDADMAC/PSS multilayers can be employed as strippable protecting layers.

Summary: A protection‐graft‐deprotection method was developed to prepare chitosan‐g‐polycaprolactone graft copolymers, during which the ring‐opening copolymerization of ε‐caprolactone onto phthaloylchitosan (PHCS) happened without any additional catalysis. The intermediate PHCS was introduced primarily to protect the active amino group of chitosan. After controlled experiments, the phthalimido compound was proposed to be a novel kind of organic catalyst for the ring‐opening polymerization of caprolactone monomers, while the hydroxyl group acted as an initiator. Hence, in this graft system, PHCS was endowed with both self‐catalysis and self‐initiation at the same time, and the PCL side chains grew from the hydroxyl groups of the chitosan backbone.

Layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly was conducted on CaCO3 microparticles pre‐doped with polystyrene‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PAA) micelles, and resulted in micelles encapsulation in the microcapsules after core removal. Distribution of the micelles in the templates and capsules was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The micelles inside the capsules connected with each other to form a chain and network‐like structure with a higher density near the capsule walls. The hydrophobic PS cores were then able to load small uncharged hydrophobic drugs while the negatively charged PAA corona could induce spontaneous deposition of water‐soluble positively charged drugs such as doxorubicin.
