The shape-controlled synthesis of noble metal nanocrystals (NCs) bounded by high-index facets is a current research interest because the products have the potential of significantly improving the catalytic performance of NCs in industrially important reactions. This study reports a versatile method for synthesizing polyhedral NCs enclosed by a variety of high-index Pd facets. The method is based on the heteroepitaxial growth of Pd layers on concave trisoctahedral (TOH) gold NC seeds under careful control of the growth kinetics. Polyhedral Au@Pd NCs with three different classes of high-index facets, including concave TOH NCs with {hhl} facets, concave hexoctahedral (HOH) NCs with {hkl} facets, and tetrahexahedral (THH) NCs with {hk0} facets, can be formed in high yield. The Miller indices of NCs are also modifiable, and we have used the THH NCs as a demonstrative example. The catalytic activities of these NCs were evaluated by the structure-sensitive reaction of formic acid electro-oxidation. The results showed that the high-index facets are generally more active than the low-index facets. In summary, a seeded growth process based on concave high-index faceted monometallic TOH NC templates and careful control of the growth kinetics is a simple and effective strategy for the synthesis of noble metal NCs with high-index facets. It also offers tailorability of the surface structure in shape-controlled synthesis.  相似文献

High surface energy of high-index facets endows nanocrystals with high activities and thus promotes potential applications such as highly efficient catalysts, special optical, electrical and magnetic devices. But the high surface energy of the high-index facets usually drives them to grow faster than the other facets and finally disappear during the crystal growth, which leads the synthesis of nanocrystals with high-indexed facets exposed to be a great challenge.Herein,we introduced two routes to control the synthesis of-Fe2O3polyhedrons with different sets of high-index facets, one using different metal ions(Ni2+,Cu2+or Zn2+)as structure-directing agents and the other applying polymer surfactant sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC)as additive. The growth process of high-index-Fe2O3polyhedrons was also discussed and possible growth mechanism was proposed.  相似文献

In this study, quasi-cubic and hexagonal bipyramid α-Fe(2)O(3) polyhedrons with high-index facets exposed were controllably synthesized by applying metal ions Zn(2+) or Cu(2+) as structure-directing agents. The growth of the α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures with high-index facets were induced by metal ions without the addition of any other surfactants. The quasi-cubic form controlled by Zn(2+) looks like a cube but has an angle of approximately 86° bound by (012), (10-2), and (1-12) facets, whereas the hexagonal bipyramid form controlled by Cu(2+) has a sixfold axis bound by {012} facets. Magnetic measurements confirm that these two kinds of nanocrystals display shape- and surface-dependent magnetic behaviors. The hexagonal bipyramid iron oxide nanocrystals show a lower Morin transition temperature of 240?K and might be spin-canted ferromagnetically controlled at room temperature, and the ferromagnetism disappears at low temperature. The quasi-cubic nanocrystals have a splitting between FC curve and ZFC curve from the highest experimental temperature and no Morin transformation occurs; this indicates that they would be defect ferromagnetically controlled at low temperature. The reported metal-ion-directing technique could provide a universal method for shape- and surface-controlled synthesis of nanocrystals with high-index facets exposed.  相似文献

Improved performance through milling: A method for enhancing the catalytic activity of supported metal nanoparticles is reported. This method enhances the activity for the ethanol electro-oxidation of a supported palladium catalyst. The much higher catalytic performance is ascribed to the increased electrochemically active surface area as well as the generation of high-index facets at the milled nanoparticle surface.  相似文献

Controlled syntheses of multicomponent metal nanocrystals (NCs) and high-index surfaces have attracted increasing attention due to the specific physical and chemical properties of such NCs. Taking advantage of copper underpotential deposition as a bridge, hexoctahedral Au-Pd alloy NCs with {hkl} facets exposed were successfully synthesized, while phase separation occurred in the absence of Cu(2+) ions. The as-prepared hexoctahedral Au-Pd alloy NCs exhibited very excellent performance in terms of both formic acid electro-oxidation and methanol tolerance due to synergism between the high-index facets and the alloy.  相似文献

Metal oxides exposing high-index facets are potentially impactful in catalysis and adsorption processes owing to under-coordinated ions and polarities that alter their interfacial properties compared to low-index facets. Here, we report molten-salt syntheses of NiO particles exposing a variety of crystal facets. We show that for a given anion (nitrate or chloride), the alkali cation has a notable impact on the formation of crystals exposing {311}, {611}, {100}, and {111} faces. Based on a parametric analysis of synthesis conditions, we postulate that the crystallization mechanism is governed by the formation of growth units consisting of NiII complexes whose coordination numbers are determined by temperature and the selection of anion (associated to the coordination sphere) and alkali cation (associated with the outer coordination sphere). Notably, our findings reveal that high-index facets are particularly favored in chloride media and are stable under prolonged periods of catalysis and steaming.  相似文献

The activity, selectivity, and long-term stability of catalyst nanoparticles can be enhanced by shape modulation. Such shaped catalytic nanocrystals have well-defined surface crystalline structures on which the cleavage and recombination of chemical bonds can be rationally controlled. Metal and metal oxide nanocrystals have been synthesized in various shapes using wet chemistry techniques such as reducing metal precursors in the presence of the surface-capping agents. The surface-capping agents should be removed prior to the catalytic chemical reaction, which necessitates clean catalytically active surface. The removal process should be performed very carefully because this removal often causes shape deformation. A few examples in which the surface-capping agents contribute positively to the chemical reactions have been reported. The examples described in this review include shaped metal, metal composite, and metal oxide nanocrystals that show enhanced catalytic activity, selectivity, and long-term stability for various gas-phase, liquid-phase, or electrocatalytic reactions. Although most of the studies using these shaped nanocrystals for catalytic applications have focused on low-index surfaces, nanocrystals with high-index facets and their catalytic applications have recently been reported. By bridging surface studies with nanoparticle catalysts using shape modulation, catalysts with improved properties can be rationally designed.  相似文献

Tetrahexahedral Pt nanocrystals (THH Pt NCs) bounded by high-index facets possess a high density of active sites and display therefore a higher catalytic activity in comparison with those enclosed by low-index facets. In the current communication, we report, for the first time, the decoration of THH Pt NC surfaces by using Bi adatoms and have demonstrated that the catalytic activity of the Bi decorated THH Pt NCs toward HCOOH electrooxidation has been drastically enhanced in comparison with bare THH Pt NCs. It has also been revealed that the catalytic activity of Bi decorated THH Pt NCs for all coverages investigated always exhibits a higher catalytic activity that is about double that of Bi decorated Pt nanospheres. The study is of great importance regarding both fundamentals and applications.  相似文献

Au nanocrystals (NCs) with an unprecedented hexoctahedral structure enclosed exclusively by high-index {321} facets have been prepared for the first time. Manipulating the NC growth kinetics by controlling the amount of reductant and the reaction temperature in the presence of a suitable surfactant was the key synthetic lever for controlling the morphology of the Au NCs. The hexoctahedral Au NCs exhibited efficient optical and surface-enhanced Raman scattering activities due to their unique morphological characteristics.  相似文献

An oriented attachment growth process was found for the morphology and shape control of various inorganic materials in solution-based systems. In this Article, a well-defined iron oxide polyhedron was prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. Detailed investigations revealed that the single-crystalline polyhedron evolved from polycrystalline aggregates. The shape and size control of the iron oxide crystals were achieved by simply adjusting the synthesis parameters. The as-prepared products exhibit excellent gas sensing selectivity to ethanol vapor. The gas-sensing ability is closely related to the exposure of high-index facets.  相似文献

The development of high-performance nanocatalysts relies essentially on the generation of stable and active surface sites at the atomic scale through synthetic control of the size, shape, and chemical composition of nanoscale metals and metal oxides. One promising route is to induce the exposure of catalytically active high-index facets of nanostructures through shape-controlled syntheses. We have designed and prepared two types of Pd nanoshells that are enclosed by high-index {730} and {221} facets through heteroepitaxial growth on high-index-faceted Au nanocrystals. The turnover numbers per surface atom of the high-index-faceted Pd nanoshells have been found to be 3-7 times those of Pd and Au-Pd core-shell nanocubes that possess only {100} facets in catalyzing the Suzuki coupling reaction. These results open up a potential for the development of inexpensive and highly active metal nanocatalysts.  相似文献

High-index surfaces of a face-centered cubic metal (e.g., Pd, Pt) have a high density of low-coordinated surface atoms and therefore possess enhanced catalysis activity in comparison with low-index faces. However, because of their high surface energy, the challenge of chemically preparing metal nanocrystals having high-index facets remains. We demonstrate in this work that introducing amines as the surface controller allows concave Pt nanocrystals having {411} high-index facets to be prepared through a facile wet-chemical route. The as-prepared Pt nanocrystals display a unique octapod morphology with {411} facets. The presence of high-index {411} exposed facets endows the concave Pt nanocrystals with excellent electrocatalytic activity in the oxidation of both formic acid and ethanol.  相似文献

The chemical selectivity and faradaic efficiency of high-index Cu facets for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is investigated. More specifically, shape-controlled nanoparticles enclosed by Cu {hk0} facets are fabricated using Cu multilayer deposition at three distinct layer thicknesses on the surface facets of Au truncated ditetragonal nanoprisms (Au DTPs). Au DTPs are shapes enclosed by 12 high-index {310} facets. Facet angle analysis confirms DTP geometry. Elemental mapping analysis shows Cu surface layers are uniformly distributed on the Au {310} facets of the DTPs. The 7 nm Au@Cu DTPs high-index {hk0} facets exhibit a CH4 : CO product ratio of almost 10 : 1 compared to a 1 : 1 ratio for the reference 7 nm Au@Cu nanoparticles (NPs). Operando Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra disclose reactive adsorbed *CO as the main intermediate, whereas CO stripping experiments reveal the high-index facets enhance the *CO formation followed by rapid desorption or hydrogenation.  相似文献

Directly manipulating and controlling the size and shape of metal nanoparticles is a key step for their tailored applications. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were applied to understand the microscopic origin of the asymmetric growth mechanism in gold nanorods. Different factors influencing the growth were selectively included in the models to unravel the role of the surfactants and ions. In the early stage of the growth, when the seed is only a few nanometers large, a dramatic symmetry breaking occurs as the surfactant layer preferentially covers the (100) and (110) facets, leaving the (111) facets unprotected. This anisotropic surfactant layer in turn promotes anisotropic growth with the less protected tips growing faster. When silver salt is added to the growth solution, the asymmetry of the facets is preserved, but the Br? concentration at the interface increases, resulting in increased surface passivation.  相似文献

Fe(7)Se(8) polyhedra with high-index facets and Fe(7)Se(8) nanorods can be selectively synthesized by a solvothermal reaction in a mixed solvent of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and deionized water (DIW). It is found that the morphologies of Fe(7)Se(8) nanocrystals can be effectively controlled by adjusting the volume ratio of DETA and DIW. The unusual polyhedral crystals are bounded by two {001} and twelve {012} facets. The intrinsic properties of Fe(7)Se(8) nanocrystals have been investigated. Magnetic measurements indicate that the obtained polyhedra and nanorods show a weak ferromagnetic ordering at room temperature. In particular, a new photoluminescence emission at 403 nm from the Fe(7)Se(8) nanocrystals has been observed. The described solvothermal reaction in a mixed solvent may be extended to the synthesis of other transition-metal chalcogenide crystals with controlled shape, facets, and structure, which may bring new functionalities.  相似文献

By using octahedral gold nanocrystals with sizes of approximately 50 nm as the structure-directing cores for the overgrowth of Pd shells, Au-Pd core-shell heterostructures with systematic shape evolution can be directly synthesized. Core-shell octahedra, truncated octahedra, cuboctahedra, truncated cubes, and concave cubes were produced by progressively decreasing the amount of the gold nanocrystal solution introduced into the reaction mixture containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), H(2)PdCl(4), and ascorbic acid. The core-shell structure and composition of these nanocrystals has been confirmed. Only the concave cubes are bounded by a variety of high-index facets. This may be a manifestation of the release of lattice strain with their thick shells at the corners. Formation of the [CTA](2)[PdBr(4)] complex species has been identified spectroscopically. Time-dependent UV-vis absorption spectra showed faster Pd source consumption rates in the growth of truncated cubes and concave cubes, while a much slower reduction rate was observed in the generation of octahedra. The concave cubes and octahedra were used as catalysts for a Suzuki coupling reaction. They can all serve as effective and recyclable catalysts, but the concave cubes gave higher product yields with a shorter reaction time attributed to their high-index surface facets. The concave cubes can also catalyze a wide range of Suzuki coupling reactions using aryl iodides and arylboronic acids with electron-donating and -withdrawing substituents.  相似文献

Reducible oxide-supported noble metal nanoparticles exhibit high activity in catalyzing many important oxidation reactions. However, atom migration under harsh reaction conditions leads to deactivation of the catalyst. Meanwhile, single-atom catalysts demonstrate enhanced stability, but often suffer from poor catalytic activity owing to the ionized surface states. In this work, we simultaneously address the poor activity and stability issues by synthesizing highly active and durable rhodium (Rh) single-atom catalysts through a “wrap-bake-peel” process. The pre-coated SiO2 layer during synthesis of catalyst plays a crucial role in not only protecting CeO2 support against sintering, but also donating electron to weaken the Ce−O bond, producing highly loaded Rh single atoms on the CeO2 support exposed with high-index {210} facets. Benefiting from the unique electronic structure of CeO2 {210} facets, more oxygen vacancies are generated along with the deposition of more electropositive Rh single atoms, leading to remarkably improved catalytic performance in CO oxidation.  相似文献
