Petal effect: a superhydrophobic state with high adhesive force
Hierarchical micropapillae and nanofolds are known to exist on the petals' surfaces of red roses. These micro- and nanostructures provide a sufficient roughness for superhydrophobicity and yet at the same time a high adhesive force with water. A water droplet on the surface of the petal appears spherical in shape, which cannot roll off even when the petal is turned upside down. We define this phenomenon as the "petal effect" as compared with the popular "lotus effect". Artificial fabrication of biomimic polymer films, with well-defined nanoembossed structures obtained by duplicating the petal's surface, indicates that the superhydrophobic surface and the adhesive petal are in Cassie impregnating wetting state.

We show experimentally and analytically that for single-valued, isotropic, homogeneous, randomly rough surfaces consisting of bumps randomly protruding over a continuous background, superhydrophobicity is related to the power spectral density of the surface height, which can be derived from microscopy measurements. More precisely, superhydrophobicity correlates with the third moment of the power spectral density, which is directly related to the notion of Wenzel roughness (i.e., the ratio between the real area of the surface and its projected area). In addition, we explain why randomly rough surfaces with identical root-mean-square roughness values may behave differently with respect to water repellence and why roughness components with wavelength larger than 10 μm are not likely to be of importance or, stated otherwise, why superhydrophobicity often requires a contribution from submicrometer-scale components such as nanoparticles. The analysis developed here also shows that the simple thermodynamic arguments relating superhydrophobicity to an increase in the sample area are valid for this type of surface, and we hope that it will help researchers to fabricate efficient superhydrophobic surfaces based on the rational design of their power spectral density.

Considerable effort has been expended on theoretical studies of superhydrophobic surfaces with two-tier (micro and nano) roughness, but experimental studies are few due to the difficulties in fabricating such surfaces in a controllable way. The objective of this work is to experimentally study the wetting and hydrophobicity of water droplets on two-tier rough surfaces for comparison with theoretical analyses. To compare wetting on micropatterned silicon surfaces with wetting on nanoscale roughness surfaces, two model systems are fabricated: carbon nanotube arrays on silicon wafers and carbon nanotube arrays on carbon nanotube films. All surfaces are coated with 20 nm thick fluorocarbon films to obtain low surface energies. The results show that the microstructural characteristics must be optimized to achieve stable superhydrophobicity on microscale rough surfaces. However, the presence of nanoscale roughness allows a much broader range of surface design criteria, decreases the contact angle hysteresis to less than 1 degrees , and establishes stable and robust superhydrophobicity, although nanoscale roughness could not increase the apparent contact angle significantly if the microscale roughness dominates.

Nature has long been an important source of inspiration for mankind to develop artificial ways to mimic the remarkable properties of biological systems. In this work, a new method was explored to fabricate a superhydrophobic dual-biomimetic surface comprising both the shark-skin surface morphology and the lotus leaf-like hierarchical micro/nano-structures. The biomimetic surface possessing shark-skin pattern microstructure was first fabricated by microreplication of shark-skin surface based on PDMS; and then it was treated by flame to form hierarchical micro/nano-structures that can produce lotus effect. The fabricated biomimetic surfaces were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle measurements and liquid drop impact experiments. The results show that the fabricated dual-biomimetic surface possesses both the vivid shark-skin surface morphology and the lotus leaf-like hierarchical micro/nano-structures. It can exhibit excellent superhydrophobicity that the contact angle is as high as 160° and maintain its robustness of the superhydrophobicity during the droplet impact process at a relatively high Weber number. The mechanism of the micromorphology evolution and microstructural changes on the biomimetic shark-skin surface was also discussed here in the process of flame treatment. This method is expected to be developed into a novel and feasible biomimetic surface manufacturing technique.

To understand why lotus leaf surfaces have a two-scale structure, we explore in this paper two stability mechanisms. One is the stability of the Cassie-Baxter wetting mode that generates the superhydrophobicity. A recent quantitative study (Zheng et al., Langmuir 2005, 21, 12207) showed that the larger the slenderness ratio of the surface structures was, the more stable the Cassie-Baxter wetting mode would be. On the other hand, it is well-known that more slender surface structures can only sustain lower critical water pressures for structure buckling, or Euler instability, while in the natural environments, the water pressure impacting on the lotus surface can reach a fairly high value (105 Pa in a heavy rain). Our analysis reveals that the two-scale structure of the lotus leaf surfaces is necessary for keeping both the structure and the superhydrophobicity stable. Furthermore, we find that the water-air interfacial tension makes the slender surface structure more instable and the two-scale structure a necessity.

Hierarchical roughness is known to effectively reduce the liquid-solid contact area and water droplet adhesion on superhydrophobic surfaces, which can be seen for example in the combination of submicrometer and micrometer scale structures on the lotus leaf. The submicrometer scale fine structures, which are often referred to as nanostructures in the literature, have an important role in the phenomenon of superhydrophobicity and low water droplet adhesion. Although the fine structures are generally termed as nanostructures, their actual dimensions are often at the submicrometer scale of hundreds of nanometers. Here we demonstrate that small nanometric structures can have very different effect on surface wetting compared to the large submicrometer scale structures. Hierarchically rough superhydrophobic TiO(2) nanoparticle surfaces generated by the liquid flame spray (LFS) on board and paper substrates revealed that the nanoscale surface structures have the opposite effect on the droplet adhesion compared to the larger submicrometer and micrometer scale structures. Variation in the hierarchical structure of the nanoparticle surfaces contributed to varying droplet adhesion between the high- and low-adhesive superhydrophobic states. Nanoscale structures did not contribute to superhydrophobicity, and there was no evidence of the formation of the liquid-solid-air composite interface around the nanostructures. Therefore, larger submicrometer and micrometer scale structures were needed to decrease the liquid-solid contact area and to cause the superhydrophobicity. Our study suggests that a drastic wetting transition occurs on superhydrophobic surfaces at the nanometre scale; i.e., the transition between the Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel wetting states will occur as the liquid-solid-air composite interface collapses around nanoscale structures. Consequently, water adheres tightly to the surface by penetrating into the nanostructure. The droplet adhesion mechanism presented in this paper gives valuable insight into a phenomenon of simultaneous superhydrophobicity and high water droplet adhesion and contributes to a more detailed comprehension of superhydrophobicity overall.

To enhance our understanding of liquids in contact with rough surfaces, a systematic study has been carried out in which water contact angle measurements were performed on a wide variety of rough surfaces with precisely controlled surface chemistry. Surface morphologies consisted of sandblasted glass slides as well as replicas of acid-etched, sandblasted titanium, lotus leaves, and photolithographically manufactured golf-tee shaped micropillars (GTMs). The GTMs display an extraordinarily stable, Cassie-type hydrophobicity, even in the presence of hydrophilic surface chemistry. Due to pinning effects, contact angles on hydrophilic rough surfaces are shifted to more hydrophobic values, unless roughness or surface energy are such that capillary forces become significant, leading to complete wetting. The observed hydrophobicity is thus not consistent with the well-known Wenzel equation. We have shown that the pinning strength of a surface is independent of the surface chemistry, provided that neither capillary forces nor air enclosure are involved. In addition, pinning strength can be described by the axis intercept of the cosine-cosine plot of contact angles for rough versus flat surfaces with the same surface chemistries.

A method for the preparation of inorganic superhydrophobic silica coatings using sol-gel processing with tetramethoxysilane and isobutyltrimethoxysilane as precursors is described. Incorporation of isobutyltrimethoxysilane into silica layers resulted in the existence of hydrophobic isobutyl surface groups, thereby generating surface hydrophobicity. When combined with the surface roughness that resulted from sol-gel processing, a superhydrophobic surface was achieved. This surface showed improved UV and thermal stability compared to superhydrophobic surfaces generated from polybutadiene by plasma etching. Under prolonged UV tests (ASTM D 4329), these surfaces gradually lost superhydrophobic character. However, when the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface was treated at 500 degrees C to remove the organic moieties and covered with a fluoroalkyl layer by a perfluorooctylsilane treatment, the surface regained superhydrophobicity. The UV and thermal stability of these surfaces was maintained upon exposure to temperatures up to 400 degrees C and UV testing times of 5500 h. Contact angles remained >160 degrees with contact angle hysteresis approximately 2 degrees.

A novel strategy for a tunable sigmoidal wetting transition from superhydrophobicity to superhydrophilicity on a continuous nanostructured hybrid film via gradient UV-ozone (UVO) exposure is presented. Along a single wetting gradient surface (40 mm), we could visualize the superhydrophobic (thetaH2O > 165 degrees and low contact angle hysteresis) transition (165 degrees > thetaH2O > 10 degrees ) and superhydrophilic (thetaH2O < 10 degrees within 1 s) regions simply through the optical images of water droplets on the surface. The film is prepared through layer-by-layer assembly of negatively charged silica nanoparticles (11 nm) and positively charged poly(allylamine hydrochloride) with an initial deposition in a fractal manner. The extraordinary wetting transition on chemically modified nanoparticle layered surfaces with submicrometer- to micrometer-scale pores represents a competition between the chemical wettability and hierarchical roughness of surfaces as often occurs in nature (e.g., lotus leaves, insect wings, etc).

Surfaces of hexagonally packed silica spheres have been functionalized with silanes containing different hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon chains. The resulting chemical and physical structures were studied to establish the effect of surface hydrophobicity on the measured contact angles on the rough surfaces. The results were used to assess the effects of surface modifications on the parameters in the Cassie equation. To achieve superhydrophobicity via a biomimetic approach, we created two-scale structures by first forming hexagonally packed SiO2 spheres, followed by Au deposition on the spheres and heat treatment to form Au nanoparticles on sphere surfaces. Contact angles over 160 degrees were achieved. This work provides improved understanding of the effect of the surface roughness and solid surface fraction on superhydrophobicity.

Hydrophobized silica nanoparticles of different sizes, from 16 to 500 nm, were used to impart roughness to a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating with the aim of obtaining superhydrophobic properties. The particle silanization process and the curing process of the PDMS coating were optimized to increase the contact angle (CA) of the particle containing coating. The evaluation of the coatings, by means of water CA measurements and scanning electron microscopy imaging, shows that superhydrophobicity in the adhesive rose state was achieved using combinations of two differently sized particles, with an excess of the small 16 nm ones. Superhydrophobicity in the lotus state was obtained when the filler concentration of 16 nm particles was 40 wt%, but under such conditions the coating was found to partially crack, which is detrimental in barrier applications. The preference for the rose wetting state can be explained by the round shape of the particles, which promotes the superhydrophobic rose wetting state over that of the superhydrophobic lotus state.

The present work aims to contribute to the understanding at a molecular level of the origin of the hydrophobic nature of surfaces exhibiting roughness at the nanometer scale. Graphite-based smooth and model surfaces whose roughness dimension stretches from a few angstroms to a few nanometers were used in order to generate Cassie and Wenzel wetting states of water. The corresponding solid-liquid surface free energies were computed by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The solid-liquid surface free energy of water-smooth graphite was found to be -12.7 ± 3.3 mJ/m(2), which is in reasonable agreement with a value estimated from experiments and fully consistent with the features of the employed model. All the rugged surfaces yielded higher surface free energy. In both Cassie and Wenzel states, the maximum variation of the surface free energy with respect to the smooth surface was observed to represent up to 50% of the water model surface tension. The solid-liquid surface free energy of Cassie states could be well predicted from the Cassie-Baxter equation where the surface free energies replace contact angles. The origin of the hydrophobic nature of surfaces yielding Cassie states was therefore found to be the reduction of the number of interactions between water and the solid surface where atomic defects were implemented. Wenzel's theory was found to fail to predict even qualitatively the variation of the solid-liquid surface free energy with respect to the roughness pattern. While graphite was found to be slightly hydrophilic, Wenzel states were found to be dominated by an unfavorable effect that overcame the favorable enthalpic effect induced by the implementation of roughness. From the quantitative point of view, the solid-liquid surface free energy of Wenzel states was found to vary linearly with the roughness contour length.

The paper reports on the preparation of superhydrophobic amorphous silicon oxide nanowires (a-SiONWs) on silicon substrates with a contact angle greater than 150 degrees by means of surface roughness and self-assembly. Nanowires with an average mean diameter in the range 20-150 nm and 15-20 microm in length were obtained by the so-called solid-liquid-solid (SLS) technique. The porous nature and the high roughness of the resulting surfaces were confirmed by AFM imaging. The superhydrophobicity resulted from the combined effects of surface roughness and chemical modification with fluorodecyl trichlorosilane.

Surface roughness is promotive of increasing their hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity to the extreme according to the intrinsic wettability determined by the surface free energy characteristics of a base substrate. Top-down etched silicon nanowires are used to create superhydrophilic surfaces based on the hemiwicking phenomenon. Using fluorine carbon coatings, surfaces are converted from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic to maintain the Cassie-Baxter state stability by reducing the surface free energy to a quarter compared with intrinsic silicon. We present the robust criteria by controlling the height of the nanoscale structures as a design parameter and design guidelines for superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic conditions. The morphology of the silicon nanowires is used to demonstrate their critical height exceeds several hundred nanometers for superhydrophilicity, and surpasses a micrometer for superhydrophobicity. Especially, SiNWs fabricated with a height of more than a micrometer provide an effective means of maintaining superhydrophilic (<10°) long-term stability.

Superhydrophobic surfaces in Wenzel and metastable wetting state were prepared and the conversion of such surfaces to ultraphobic surfaces was reported by the application of a fine-scale roughness. Silicon nitride substrates with hexagonally arranged pillars were prepared by micromachining. The two-scale roughness was achieved by coating these substrates with 60 nm silica nanoparticles. The surface was made hydrophobic by silanization with octadecytrichlorosilane (OTS). Wettability studies of the silicon nitride flat surface, silicon nitride pillars, and the surfaces with two-scale roughness showed that a two-scale roughness can effectively improve the hydrophobicity of surfaces with a higher apparent contact angle and reduced contact angle hysteresis when the original rough surface was in a metastable or Wenzel state. This study shows the pathway of converting a metastable hydrophobic surface to an ultraphobic surface by the introduction of a fine-scale roughness, which adds to the literature a new aspect of fine-scale roughness effect.

Many natural superhydrophobic structures have hierarchical two-tier roughness which is empirically known to promote robust superhydrophobicity. We report the wetting and dewetting properties of two-tier roughness as a function of the wettability of the working fluid, where the surface tension of water/ethanol drops is tuned by the mixing ratio, and compare the results to one-tier roughness. When the ethanol concentration of deposited drops is gradually increased on one-tier control samples, the impalement of the microtier-only surface occurs at a lower ethanol concentration compared to the nanotier-only surface. The corresponding two-tier surface exhibits a two-stage wetting transition, first for the impalement of the microscale texture and then for the nanoscale one. The impaled drops are subsequently subjected to vibration-induced dewetting. Drops impaling one-tier surfaces could not be dewetted; neither could drops impaling both tiers of the two-tier roughness. However, on the two-tier surface, drops impaling only the microscale roughness exhibited a full dewetting transition upon vibration. Our work suggests that two-tier roughness is essential for preventing catastrophic, irreversible wetting of superhydrophobic surfaces.

The present work investigates the enhancement of water repellency on engineering materials surfaces using nanoscale roughness inherent in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) together with a hydrophobic polystyrene coating via a simple spraying-based technique. The coatings show both a high contact angle and a small sliding angle for water droplets. The different surfaces obtained exhibit contact angles from 125° up to 153° depending on the preparation conditions. The observations of the topology by scanning electron microscopy reveal that the nanostructure created by the MWCNTs and the microstructure induced by the deposition of polystyrene particles forming a two-level structure that conceptually mimics the lotus leaf surface are necessary to create stable superhydrophobic surfaces.
