In [A. Biró, V.T. Sós, Strong characterizing sequences in simultaneous Diophantine approximation, J. Number Theory 99 (2003) 405–414] we proved that if Γ is a subgroup of the torus R/Z generated by finitely many independent irrationals, then there is an infinite subset AZ which characterizes Γ in the sense that for γR/Z we have ∑aAaγ<∞ if and only if γΓ. Here we consider a general compact metrizable Abelian group G instead of R/Z, and we characterize its finitely generated free subgroups Γ by subsets AG*, where G* is the Pontriagin dual of G. For this case we prove stronger forms of the analogue of the theorem of the above mentioned work, and we find necessary and sufficient conditions for a kind of strengthening of this statement to be true.  相似文献

It is shown among other results that the kernel Ker(ε a,b ) is a non-separable subspace ofC(ℓ p ) whenever ε a,b fails to be one-one, while the quotient is non-separable whenever ε a,b fails to be onto. These results extend earlier ones in several directions: neither of the subsets {A 1,...,A n }, {B 1,...,B n } needs to consist of commuting operators, and the results apply to other spaces apart from Hilbert spaces. For odd primes p and l such that the order of p modulo l is even, we determine explicitly the Jacobsthal sums l(v), ψl(v), and ψ2l(v), and the Jacobsthal–Whiteman sums and , over finite fields Fq such that . These results are obtained only in terms of q and l. We apply these results pertaining to the Jacobsthal sums, to determine, for each integer n1, the exact number of Fqn-rational points on the projective hyperelliptic curves aY2Ze−2=bXe+cZe (abc≠0) (for e=l,2l), and aY2Zl−1=X(bXl+cZl) (abc≠0), defined over such finite fields Fq. As a consequence, we obtain the exact form of the ζ-functions for these three classes of curves defined over Fq, as rational functions in the variable t, for all distinct cases that arise for the coefficients a,b,c. Further, we determine the exact cases for the coefficients a,b,c, for each class of curves, for which the corresponding non-singular models are maximal (or minimal) over Fq.  相似文献
